Preparation

translated from English Valery Ershov

after what happened in the kindergarten, it was taken from parents . But it wasn’t all about Jimmy’s death, although the bailiff told his parents that Wil was being taken away for that very reason. In fact, if it had only been a murder, he would have been driven in a black van to the Children’s Psychiatric Hospital, on the outskirts of Bellevue. However, they left the city and headed inland. As they passed Poughkeepsie, the minibus soon stopped. So he found himself in Haldane – a closed federal school, separated from the outside world by deaf, high walls. Yes, he really killed a peer, but it turned out to be not important, but the fact that he pushed Jimmy out of the window. Why, say, not Karim, Darwin, or the same Abner? They were all terrible bullies, and each seemed to deserve such a terrible fate.

“Things have gone wrong,” Veel replied to Dr. Powers, stuffing his mouth full of corn flakes. He adored them and considered them the most delicious delicacy in the world. Will recently turned six years old. – Not this way? Explain, William, why? I will try to understand you.

– Because of Jimmy. He wasn’t like that. He was the wrong boy.

– Wrong? What do you mean?

Wil spread his arms out to the side, hoping that this would help him find the right words, but they eluded him like a small fish between his fingers. Expressing thoughts was as difficult as describing that greenish, viscous mess that he was treated to at Christmas, or how to convey feelings that could not be comprehended by the mind. He wanted to explain to the doctor how bad kindergarten had gotten since Jimmy showed up. Along with him, fear came to the corridors and playgrounds. Jimmy was the only one to blame for all the trouble, but no one would ever have guessed that he was behind everything. Harmful and cunning, he did not act openly, but always on the sly, through other guys. But Will figured it out. He already knew who incites the boys – sometimes with a sharp word, and sometimes with a mean whisper – for all sorts of nasty things. He knew why Abner, for no reason at all (not for a hurtful word, but only for a glance furtively cast after him by some frightened youngster) rushes into a fight; he understood how Jimmy had managed to talk Kareem into nasty things with Sarah. Wil understood who whispered a few words to Darwin, after which Fred and Weenie, after some time, were found in the sandbox with red, inflamed eyes and miraculously managed to save from suffocation.

Jimmy was bad. Wrong. But no one understood this: neither the children, nor the teachers, nor his parents, nor the parents of other children – no one. To everyone, Jimmy was just a kid. Moreover, he was considered even quiet and too shy. “The poor thing is from a dysfunctional family,” they said, “and he lives in the town recently, that’s why he is so timid.” Only Wil alone knew the truth, because only he had the gift to see the truth. He unmistakably guessed the reason for what was happening, but could not explain or put into words what he knew. The doctors who examined him after Jimmy’s death examined his medical records and concluded that Jimmy was a “dangerous sociopath”. Wil heard their conversation, but did not understand anything. These words were just an empty phrase for him, and the last thing he cared about was who Jimmy really was. He knew only one thing: before in kindergarten, everything was different. It was fun here and the kids got along well with each other. Jimmy changed everything – as if something had broken in a well-oiled mechanism. Something alien invaded the usual, measured daily routine, the mechanism deteriorated and began to malfunction. In order for laughter and fun to return to the kindergarten, Jimmy had to leave.

Talking wouldn’t help, so Wil didn’t talk to him, nor did he openly fight. On the other hand, inaction and flight would not have corrected the situation either. There was only one way to deal with Jimmy. Wil intuitively understood which solution would be the only correct one. Intuition was his second gift.

“Jimmy was bad,” he mumbled, stuffing his mouth full of cereal again. – He did not love anyone, and his eyes are like those of a fish.

It was the most apt comparison that came to Wil’s mind. With these words, he wanted to describe Jimmy’s look and say that he seemed to be looking straight into your eyes, but it seemed that he was looking through you, as if through glass, as if there was no one in front of him, as if no one existed at all. And all because he was not truly a man, or rather, there was not a drop of humanity in him. Is it right when among people there is someone who is not a person at all and interferes with everyone?

“You see,” Wil continued, desperately trying to put into words the sudden thought. – Jimmy was not like that … he interfered with us, like … now I’ll show you this. On a sudden impulse, Wil ran to the bottom shelf where the toys were and brought out a box of plastic figurines of various shapes. For each in a special frame, consisting of through cells, there was a corresponding nest. Wil showed the doctor a triangle and began to force it into a square cell. He stopped only when he crumpled and firmly stuck in the nest.

“Here,” he exclaimed, “it’s Jimmy!”

– What, a triangle? said Dr. Powers.

– Yeah. See, he doesn’t belong here. He’s stuck… hooked. Jimmy, too, clung to everyone. With these words, Wil again rushed to the shelf and returned with a plastic hammer. He carefully aimed and cracked with all his strength on the end face of the figure. From the impact, the figurine jumped out of the nest and flew across the room.

– Well, – Wil said and smiled, remembering the window – now everything is in order. I dealt with him.

Federal School in Haldane was unusual. There were no teachers or other adults here, only robots keeping order. There were no training schedules, strict routines and rules. There were no compulsory or even extracurricular activities, let alone classes and diaries. Instead of studying the natural sciences, mathematics and other disciplines, the educational process consisted entirely of solving riddles, puzzles, all kinds of games and competitions. Indoor and outdoor games, single and team, sports and mental, board and associative, computer and puzzles from hundreds of components – games that develop the mind and dexterity, gambling, intellectual and primitive games, known from time immemorial and the most modern, which were invented only yesterday. You could play Monopoly and poker, Doom-18 and chess, football and checkers, tag and mahjong, Othello and bridge, Parchesis and hopscotch, hockey and riddles, Risk and other games , which can be listed indefinitely.

Wil fell in love with the school from the first day, from the first hour, that is, from the moment he got out of the black van and saw the security robot, who met him at the massive gate, and then led him through the marble corridors and left him in the room where he There was a note on the bed, congratulating him on his arrival in Haldane. In addition to congratulations, there was a question in it: Can you connect these nine points with four straight lines without lifting the pencil from the paper and without drawing the same line twice?

Wil completed the task without difficulty and in a matter of seconds.* Naturally, such a beginning meant nothing. However, those who followed the events with the help of surveillance cameras that were in each room under the ceiling, at that moment apparently decided that they had not enrolled a new pet in the school in vain. Wil thought that it would be fun at school, that there were many interesting things ahead of him and he would not be bored. And so it happened. For all kinds of fun, he, like other children, almost forgot that he was forbidden to leave the school grounds, and he would never see his parents again, would not talk to his brothers and sisters, to his friends from kindergarten.

Wil was taken straight to heaven, or at least to a place that should seem like heaven to every child. Wil thought so, and so did the other kids at school. In fun, they were attracted primarily not by achieving victory, but by the desire to comprehend the secret of a particular game. They liked to discover new rules step by step; this process captured them completely, and they selflessly played for days and nights without noticing either sunrises or sunsets, or the passage of time. They played before dinner and after dinner, and even during dinner; played both in individual and pair games, as well as in threes and a group; sometimes someone invented the rules himself, and it happened that such a game immediately gathered dozens of players. They played in teams and every man for himself, one on one in the school yard and in a computer network – against an opponent or against a computer. Some games used boards, chips, figures, others used cards or pictures, others used joysticks or markers, but often got by with a pen and a piece of paper or just words.

Before von Trier: 9 best films about maniacs

On this occasion, we decided to recall the most worthy films of past years, in which maniacs are not just dumb golems personifying evil, but truly complex, bulging characters. Pictures in which maniacs play leading roles. Crazy, cynical, sad, fantastic, based on real events, mockumentary, disgusting, funny and scary. For every taste and size.

Note that the list below does not include “American Psycho”. Just don’t ask why. Because. If you really want to, you can insert it here yourself – just for good measure.

Peeping Tom (1960)

Years ahead of its time, Michael Powell’s film about a young man named Mark (Karlheinz Böhm). Mark is a cute, shy blonde who is the camera’s best friend. He works as a cinematographer, works part-time in a photo studio, and in between kills girls, capturing the moments of their death on film. The roots of his unusual hobby go back to childhood – a cruel father, a prominent scientist, performed inhumane experiments on him, exploring the nature of fear.

A little later in the same year, Alfred Hitchcock’s “Psycho”, similar in many respects, was released on the other side of the ocean, which immediately became a huge hit. But the nasty British critics fiercely disliked the picture of Michael Powell and kicked their feet, actually burying the career of a glorious director and subsequently regretting it bitterly. Perhaps it would be redundant to say what an impact “The Peeping” had on genre cinema – it is so obvious.

The reason for the initial rejection of the film is not only the hitherto unprecedented level of violence, but also the overt hint that any moviegoer is, in a certain sense, the same voyeur as Mark, and cinema itself is not a completely healthy hobby. Powell makes you observe the same thing that the main character observes through his lens, thus putting us in his place, and this made, and still makes a strong impression.

“Maniac” / Maniac (1980)

One of the first and best film by William Lustig, creator of the “Maniac Cop” trilogy. In 2012, a remake of it was released by Alexander Azh himself, starring Elijah Wood. Entirely filmed from the first person, the remake was still no match for the original. Too licked and too Elijah Wood. That is, with all due respect, even when Elijah Wood remains behind the scenes, a maniac from him, like from a Rottweiler corgi puppy.

But Joe Spinella is a maniac – what you need. Big, clumsy, ugly, but when required – charming, Italian-American Frank Zito sends women and not only to the other world, and the scalps of the victims (only women) are nailed to the mannequins carefully stored at his house. Makes him do it – what do you think? – childhood trauma. But this time it’s not the father’s fault, but the mother’s.

The first half of the film is a series of long murder scenes, among which the double murder of a couple in a car, imprudently stopping to show off at the wrong time and in the wrong place, stands out. A lover’s head explosion from a gunshot is one of the greatest head explosions in cinematic history.

The plot comes very late, but still comes: a young photographer accidentally snaps Frank in the park. To your misfortune. And the film ends with a magnificent psychedelic revenge scene of the mentioned mannequins.

Filmed for a penny, in a partisan way, “Maniac” plunges deeply into the muddy abysses of the inflamed mind, where there is only impenetrable darkness, pain and death. In the States, the film paid off handsomely and deservedly acquired a cult status, while in England, characteristically, it was banned. Oh, those sensitive Brits.

“Martin” / Martin (1976)

Technically, Martin, the title character of George Romero’s film of the same name, is not a maniac, but a vampire. But at the same time, he is spared all the attributes inherent in vampires. He does not have fangs, is not afraid of light, garlic and crucifixes, does not have super strength and does not turn into a bat. In fact, his bloodlust, which was inherited by him, is akin to the thirst to sniff Grenouille’s mademoiselles from Perfume.

“Martin” – the most realistic movie that breaks not only vampire clichés. Let’s say you remember how Dexter, another famous psychopath, injected sleeping pills into people’s necks, and they instantly passed out? This is often seen in movies, and it is completely untrue. Because it takes time for the drug to take effect.

So Martin, a slender young man, has to climb into people’s houses, poke them with a syringe, and then run after them, risking getting cuffs. But this is still a trifle compared to the real problems that relentlessly haunt the poor boy.

George Romero, whom everyone knows as the man who invented zombie horror, made a very subtle and sad drama. In essence – not about a maniac and not even about a vampire, but about a lost, unfortunate teenager surrounded by a hostile environment of total misunderstanding. Which, sadly, is true at all times.

“My Friend Dahmer” / My Friend Dahmer (2017)

Probably the only film about a maniac that does not contain a single murder. Ross Lynch (Harvey’s sour bobblehead from Chilling Adventures of Sabrina) plays – and extremely inspired – Jeffrey Dahmer, a real-life serial killer with 17 killers to his credit.

Jeffrey Dahmer hasn’t done anything irreparable yet. For now, he’s just a struggling high school student who clearly needs help. But his parents have absolutely no time for him – the father, having discovered a collection of dead animals from his son, does not attach due importance to this, and the mother generally has little contact with reality. At school, Jeffrey is listed as a local jester, peers pay attention to him only when he is actively clowning around.

The film ends when a young hitchhiker gets into Jeffrey Dahmer’s car. Soon he will become the first in the list of 17 unfortunates. After 13 years, Jeffrey Dahmer will finally be caught, and after another 3 years, he will be beaten to death by a cellmate.

All this could have been avoided. “My friend Dahmer” teaches us to look closely at our neighbor, especially when this neighbor is a strange teenager who collects the carcasses of animals in the barn. Unfortunately, common truths reach people with difficulty, which is why child abuse to this day all over the world blooms profusely and bears fruit no less abundantly. Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer (1986) there is no more or less valid reason to do terrible things. Rather, he also has a story about a difficult childhood and an abusive parent, but he gets confused in the details of this story, like Heath Ledger’s Joker, so there is reason to doubt its veracity.

Most likely, Henry just likes this business. To kill a man for him – how can we enter a bar with you. For a beer or for a beautiful lady. I like it and that’s it. Of course, there is a difference – at least they don’t judge for drinking beer. Therefore, in order not to get caught, Henry worked out a set of simple rules for himself: change tools, methods and geography more often.

This, as well as the fact that in appearance, and in communication, Henry is the most ordinary hard worker, is terrifying. The ease with which he succeeds, this discouraging routine of the atrocities taking place, suggests that the same Henry may well walk along the same street with you. You stand in line for some man, you think: well, the man is himself and the man. Or you don’t think anything – the most ordinary man, because why think about him. And he’s shot two already today. Scary.

The apotheosis of senseless violence, shot as if by an amateur camera in one shot, the scene of the extermination of an entire family, still excites a lot. Partly because of her, the film could not find its way to a wide audience for a long time, but when it got there, it immediately firmly settled in the hearts and memories of connoisseurs.

“The Poughkeepsie Tapes” / The Poughkeepsie Tapes (2006)

Developed by John McNaughton in “Henry” the above concept of the elusive maniac, 20 years later, developed and brought to perfection the film “The Poughkeepsie Tapes” by John Eric Dowdle, which, to In a word, this year he produced an excellent series “Tragedy in Waco”.

This maniac has no name, no one knows what he looks like, after his villainy he leaves no evidence. Nothing is known about him at all, except that he is a sick monster. Holden Ford himself from Fincher’s Mindhunter, having studied his case, would have simply gone on a binge out of desperation.

“Poughkeepsie Tapes” is half mockumentary, half found footage. It all looks like an investigative documentary featuring the best experts in various fields. Fragments of the interview are interspersed with video fragments deliberately planted by the killer in mockery of the stupid bloodhounds. And from these fragments, the blood literally freezes and the hair moves in hard-to-reach places.

Fun prank idea: show a movie to a person who hasn’t heard anything about it, after telling him that it’s a real documentary. From one assumption that the main character can be anyone and anywhere, you want to lock yourself in an apartment and never go out again.

“The Man Bites the Dog” / “It Happened Near You” / C’est arrivé près de chez vous (1992)

26 years before Lars von Trier’s last opus, “The Man Bites the Dog” was premiered at the Cannes Film Festival . Several young Belgians, for three pennies of chocolate and waffles, kicked off on their knees a black-and-white pseudo-documentary comedy replete with scenes of cynical violence: abuse of women, intimidation of a pensioner to death in order to save ammunition, and so on. And nothing, no one ran away. They even gave me a couple of awards. Those were the times!

A film crew of three people is making a film about a charismatic, smiling scammer Benoit, who willingly shares the secrets of his profession to the camera. Gradually, from impartial observers, they become active participants in atrocities – with sad consequences for themselves (for some reason, sound engineers are especially unlucky).

The authors themselves, shrugging off accusations of excessive bloodthirstiness, argued that “Man Bites the Dog” is just a movie about how cinema is created, and the hero could just as well be a salesman, for example. Whereas, in fact, this is, among other things, a satire on reality TV programs and, in particular, a parody of the Strip-Tease show, which was popular in Belgium in those years. And besides – an obvious warning about peering into all sorts of abysses.

Interestingly, at about the same time, odious programs by Alexander Nevzorov were airing in Russia, where the latter did essentially the same thing. The only fundamental difference is that cruelty, brought to the point of absurdity, in one case is an artistic means, and in the other – a real object of illumination.

Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon (2006)

Imagine a world where Jason Voorhees, Michael Myers and Freddy Krueger are not fictional characters but real people . And what they did in the movies actually happened.

Leslie Vernon – the ideological follower of the above. 20 years ago, as a child, he cut up his relatives, which is why the inhabitants of an inconspicuous quiet town reasonably went berserk and threw him off a waterfall. Now it’s his turn to come back to take revenge by killing a bunch of teenagers. And pretty journalist Taylor Gentry is going to capture all this on camera.

It’s a damn witty reimagining of the slasher genre (“Scream”? What’s “Scream”?), a look at clichéd horror films about the masked silent youth exterminator from the point of view of the masked silent youth exterminator. In such an unexpected light, many questions that seemed rhetorical for many years receive quite adequate answers, and hackneyed clichés acquire a clear justification.

John Carpenter and Wes Craven lied to us shamelessly. A cheerful selfless enthusiast of his work, so ungrateful and so necessary – that’s what suddenly hides under the mask. By the way, another brilliant find of the film – Robert Englund, playing a character written off from Dr. Sam Loomis from “Halloween”. Well, isn’t it a miracle?

“The Greasy Strangler” / The Greasy Strangler (2016)

It is unlikely that you have read this far, but if you did, then you asked for it. “Greasy Strangler” – a film that 99.9% of viewers will turn off after five minutes with an obscene yell of indignation. One of the most disgusting and nauseating in history.

Balding middle-aged mattress lives with his father, a nasty old man. During the day, they lead walking tours of the places of glory of disco legends, which, upon closer inspection, turn out to be some kind of snuffy holes in the deserted industrial zones. The old man eats fat fried in fat and poured over with fat, and at night he smears himself with fat and turns into a Greasy Strangler. There is no point in describing further to avoid spoilers.

It’s impossible to watch, of course, but it’s a lot of fun.
