In our bright, cozy, nationally accredited Infant Rooms, our teachers will lavish your baby with love and attention, and take great care to forge a tender bond of trust. We work with you to create an individualized schedule for your infant and ensure that their transition from home to classroom is always a smooth one.

The Creative Curriculum® system is strategically used by our teachers to design stimulating activities which infants get a head start on the cognitive building blocks that are essential for a lifetime of learning. During the day they will explore their world using their five senses, develop language and communication skills, interact with peers, and work on gross motor skills such as crawling, climbing, and pulling themselves up. Weather permitting,  they will be able to visit the attached playground or join their peers in taking a stroll around our beautiful campus in specially-designed buggies.

Teachers share the details of your baby’s day at pickup, and you will be invited to schedule a parent/teacher conference twice a year to discuss thier progress in detail.

Young Toddlers

1 year to 2 years old
7:30am – 5:00pm

Our young toddler teachers are experts at directing your child’s endless curiosity and energy into learning experiences that form the foundation for lifelong learning skills. Our nationally accredited Young Toddler Classrooms are filled with books, musical instruments, dramatic play equipment, and other toys especially designed to promote multisensory learning.

Activities drawn from the Creative Curriculum® system will help your child refine important skills such as matching and sorting, hand-eye coordination, cooperation, creativity, and communication. Our teachers gently encourage them to join in small group activities and routines.  They will also be able to play in our soft indoor gym or spend time outside on our playground, in an outdoor classroom, or exploring our beautiful natural campus in specially-designed buggies.

Our teachers follow the Creative Curriculum® system to regularly monitor and nurture your young toddler’s personal development. Teachers will share the details of your young toddler’s day at pickup, and you will also be invited to schedule a parent/teacher conference twice a year to discuss their progress in detail.

Older Toddlers

In our nationally accredited Older Toddler Classrooms, our teachers use small group activities and positive guidance techniques to foster a sense of success, independence, and belonging in your child.  In order to stimulate their curiosity, educational equipment and units such as Kindness, Dr. Seuss, and Construction Zone rotate frequently.

Activities are planned using the Creative Curriculum® / Teaching Strategies Gold®system, and are strategically selected to help her reach key milestones in language, science, math, and social/emotional development.

Our teachers follow guidelines to regularly monitor and nurture your toddler’s personal development. Teachers will share the details of your toddler’s day at pickup, and you will be invited to schedule a parent/teacher conference twice a year to discuss their progress in detail.

During the day your child will have opportunities to play in our soft indoor gym or spend time enjoying outdoor activities on four acres of natural land including our toddler playground, outdoor classrooms, raised gardens, and walking trails.

Preschool

History

North Church

In pre-Columbian times, New Hampshire was occupied by the Abenaki Native Americans. The Englishman Martin Pring was the first European to explore and describe the area in 1603. The first British immigrants established the city in 1630 under the name “Piscatacua”. City status granted by Plymouth Council in 1631. The site was later renamed Strawbery Banke due to the wild strawberries that grew along the banks of the Piscataka. The place occupied a position favorable for trade: the port developed in connection with the industry located upstream, with fishing, shipbuilding and timber transportation. In 1632, Fort William and Mary guarded the port entrance. The first African slaves were imported as early as 1645, and the triangular trade was one of the foundations of the city’s prosperity. The city was officially founded in 1653 and was named “Portsmouth” after the founder of the New Hampshire colony who served as captain of Portsmouth Harbor in England. In 1679In the same year the city became the capital of the colony and received Puritan refugees from neighboring Massachusetts. At the end of the Second Colonial War, Governor Joseph Dudley chose her to sign the Treaty of Portsmouth (c), which brought a temporary end to hostilities between the Abenaki and the English settlers. Portsmouth had a population of 4,720 at the first US census in 1790. In the 1950s, the population increased by 43%. Since the 1990s, the city has lost residents. Mansions of colonial styles, Georgia and Federal reflect the prosperity brought by the port. Some of these houses are now museums and are concentrated in the Strawbery Banke area. The city center was destroyed several times by fires, and the current buildings are built of brick.

The Richard Jackson House is the oldest wooden house (1664) in the city. Wentworth Coolidge Mansion is a historical site in XVIII – ^th century. It was the home of the British governor during colonial times. John Paul Jones House (1758) was the home of Captain Gregory Purcell and his wife. John Paul Jones rented a room here in 1781-1782 when he supervised the construction of US ships. Today it houses the Museum of the Portsmouth Historical Society.

Moffat-Ladd House (1753) was the home of Continental Army General William Whipple during the American Revolutionary War. The McPhedrys-Warner House, built in brick from 1716-1718 by shipowner and merchant Archibald MacPhedrys, has the oldest mural in the United States. Rundleth May House was built in 1807 by James Rundleth, who made his fortune in the textile trade. The Portsmouth Athenaeum has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1973. Founded in 1817, it houses a library, archive and museum with 40,000 volumes.

The municipality also emphasizes its maritime heritage: rebuilt in 1878, the lighthouse is 14.6 meters high. USS Albacore museum and park dedicated to the submarine USS Albacore (1953–1972), built by the Portsmouth Naval shipyard.

The current mayor of Portsmouth is Tom Ferrini. The current municipal manager is John P. Bohenko. The City Council is elected, as are the School Council and the police.

Portsmouth Regional Hospital is a 209 bed hospital. The city has four elementary schools (K1-5), one junior high school (K6-8), one high school (k9-12) with 1084 students, two private schools. Portsmouth High School is one of the best in the state.

Economy

In the early days, the city was focused on maritime trade and shipbuilding. Today, the economy is more tertiary, even if industries are still present, especially in high technology. Reviving the city center, the municipality intends to develop tourism. In 2007, the unemployment rate was 2.9%. The main employers in the city are Columbia HCA Hospital (1150 employees), Portsmouth Municipality (937 employees), National Passport Center (837 employees).
