Easy Kids Craft / Dollar Store DIY !

Summer isn’t just for frozen treats and BBQ’s.  At our house summer means finding ways to keep the kiddos busy, other than swimming! To avoid crazy fits of boredom rage, I plan fun crafts and projects.  I like to keep the creations they make, but I can only store so many paper plate crafts. So we focus on making things that can be used as decoration or serve a purpose, like this DIY Beaded Wind Chime

Wind Chimes

Wind chimes are typically made with bright, beautiful beads, crystals or plastics.  When the wind blows they make such a pretty sound.

Super easy kids crafts

Making the beaded wind chime:

Take caution with beads if crafting with children under 3

Gather together the following materials:

  • 6 jumbo craft sticks in rainbow colors
  • Tacky or Hot glue
  • Jewelry wire or fishing line
  • Crimp beads (found near the beads in any big box or craft store)
  • Plastic or crystal beads
  • 6 large beads
  • Scissors
  • Jewelry pliers or regular pliers

What to do:

  1. Start by gluing the craft sticks into 2 triangles.  Place on top of each other to form a star shape and glue.
  2. Cut 4  20″ pieces of jewelry wire.
  3. Slide a crimp bead onto the end of one piece of jewelry wire, crimp to close.   Start stringing beads in desired pattern, half way up the strand stop and add a large bead, crimp bead and close.
  4. NOTE*  Start and end with a large bead on each strand.  The large beads hanging on the bottom will bang together making a sound and the other large beads will hold the star up.
  5. Continue stringing 2 more strands this way.
  6. String the 4th strand completely leaving only about 4 inches at the end.
  7. Thread the 3 strands, 1 through each hole on the star,  see picture for reference.

DIY Beaded Wind Chime

To Finish

Put the 4th strand up through the middle and gather all 4 strand ends together.  The star will sit on the big beads, adjust the strands until it is hanging evenly.

Slip all 4 strand ends through a bead, add a crimp bead and close to finish.   Hang and enjoy!

Sun Rui came to me in tears again.

This is the third time since I came to Green Plum Island two weeks ago. And it happens about every five days. I don’t know whether to praise her for her perseverance in the pursuit of love, or to sigh over her insane speed of recovery from a broken heart.

Not to mention the fact that the mood index above her head always fluctuates around seventy units. It is clear that she never really got upset.

“He was so handsome, but as soon as he took off his pants, his manhood turned out to be as insignificant as his character…” Sun Rui grabs another tissue, wipes his nose and continues on, “I can tolerate everything that anything but that!

As she speaks, her mood index drops another five units. Its color turns into a depressing blue. Obviously, this is a great tragedy for her.

— Okay, stop crying. It’s not like you were that much in love with him. Just find someone else,” I advise her, biting into a tangerine popsicle and flipping through manga on my knees.

The old stationary fan moves slowly from side to side. It is located at the highest point of the room, but the wind it blows around the room was hot and stuffy.

It’s hard to tell the seasons on the Green Plum Island. In winter, the temperature on the island remains above fifteen degrees. In summer it can rise to thirty, but never exceeds thirty-five degrees.

Now the beginning of July is the hottest time of the year. Mornings and evenings are cool, but from noon to sunset the heat is unbearable. And the stuffiness also makes itself felt.

Especially for people like me who are used to mild city temperatures. It is difficult to spend days here without air conditioning.

— Why do I never meet good people? “Sun Rui was wearing makeup, but after all her sobs, even the waterproof eyeliner starts to smudge on her face. Her false eyelashes barely stay on. And with a sudden burst of emotion, she reaches out to take them off. For some reason, her mood index drops another five points.

Now she finally looks like someone who is truly “heartbroken.”

“Stupid person, to think I spent so many false eyelashes on him…” she crumples the tissues with her eyelashes and starts to sob again.

Sun Rui and I are childhood best friends. We met when I was eight years old, when I first came with my parents to Green Plum Island to visit my grandfather and celebrate the New Year here.

Then she had a bowl hairdo. With her loud, noisy personality, I mistook her for a “brother”. In the same way, she, looking at my delicate features and calm disposition, thought that I was her new “sis.” It wasn’t until she was about to swear me in as her sister before I left the island that we both realized the truth.

In subsequent holidays, I always hung out with her when I came to the island. And thus, our friendship remained strong throughout the time.

When I was fourteen my parents divorced and I went to live with my mother. Their divorce was high-profile and unhappy, and after my mother got custody of me, she naturally forbade me from having anything to do with my father’s family.

Only because of the complicated paperwork associated with changing her name, she left her father’s surname for now. And so my name to this day remains Yu Mian, and not Wang – my mother’s surname.

Sun Rui suddenly slaps her head when she has a brilliant idea.

— Yu Mian, why don’t you be my boyfriend? You look so good that if we date, everyone will be so jealous of me. Plus, we know each other so well that we don’t have to be afraid that the other person is an asshole. We can’t leave each other at this moment.

Is it possible to use friendship in this way? And besides, this is not so much a boyfriend as a talisman that you carry around with you to show off.

“No thanks,” I say without hesitation.

– Why? Sun Rui asks offendedly.

I take another bite of ice cream and calmly say:

— Because my penis is also small, I’m afraid you will be disappointed.

Sun Rui is dumbfounded at my words. The numbers above her head then begin to spiral down without warning.

— My God! she screams at the ceiling above her head, “Why are you doing this to me?!

The loud chirping of cicadas comes from the open window, their insistent cries echoing in my ears and giving me a headache.

I refuse to console Sun Rui and instead focus on the manga in my hands.

Suddenly, among the sounds of a whirring fan and cicadas, there is another sound: a car engine.

Sun Rui’s crying stops almost instantly. She practically flies to the window and looks down.

I have a secret suspicion that her habit of coming to me after parting is not really to be heartbroken and seek solace.

— Not that I’ve seen him before, but I’m willing to bet that this person’s baby is definitely not small.

— I’m not sure I heard it right and I’m pretty sure she’s already salivating. She looks like a dog that hasn’t eaten for three days and just saw a fat, fat chicken.

I close the manga and join it. Following her lead, I stick my head out and look down.

I heard from my grandfather that the owners of the neighboring house changed three years ago. The father moved there with his daughter. My father was not yet thirty, and he ran a second-hand bookstore in the village. His daughter was five years old and an adorable child. However, she was born disabled – her legs do not work well, and she needs help with prosthetics.

A black SUV is parked in a neighboring yard. A tall, broad-shouldered man in a white shirt and jeans steps out from the driver’s side. He goes to the back passenger seat, opens the door and holds out his hand. And less than a minute later, a little girl in a red flared dress and a bow tie appears on his arms.

The man’s sleeves are partly rolled up, revealing dainty thin arms. The muscles in his forearms bulged with tension. He looks pretty strong.

Thanks to Sun Rui, I unconsciously look at his lower body.

Although its size is indeterminate, its legs are definitely long and straight.

In two months I will be nineteen. I have very little time left to grow up, and no matter how hard I try, I most likely will not exceed one hundred and eighty centimeters. I really want to ask the person outside what he ate as a child, given his size – he looks about one hundred and ninety tall.

“He’s so handsome,” Sun Rui mutters, “Sexier than any of my exes.”

I turn to look at her mood index. The number rose to eighty, and the depressing blue turned into a tasteless yellow.

She is clearly hungry for a male body.

— Why don’t you want to talk to him? Grandpa says he doesn’t have a wife – I finished my ice cream and now there’s only one stick left. I suck on it until I manage to get the slight sweetness of the wood fibers.

— Because I know and understand myself. A being of this caliber… I can only say that I’m not in his league.” Despite these words, the yellow color over Sun Rui’s head does not dissipate. “I don’t have striking beauty, and I’m not particularly talented. An average copy like me should just admire from afar.

I turn around and lean back against the window, then grin:

– I doubt he’s that good-looking…

– Oh my god, he’s looking our way! Sun Rui squeals as he falls to the floor.

Still chewing on a stick in my mouth, I turn in the summer heat and look at this man.

It’s just a brief moment: when I look at him, he averts his eyes and our eyes meet, maybe just for a second…

And yet, in that second, my heart seems to crash into something , because it starts beating so wildly and erratically that it seems like it will jump out of my chest.

My mouth opens slowly; the popsicle stick falls out of his mouth.

I am, for want of a better word, hypnotized. He really is so handsome…

The man slams the car door and enters the house with his daughter in his arms, apparently unaware of Sun Rui and my sniffing around. Or he noticed, but shows no interest.

– You know he is the dream lover of every single woman on this island. You can’t even imagine how popular his bookstore is among the local women,” at some point, Sun Rui again goes to the window and looks at the already deserted courtyard, “Do you see this bell in front of his door?

I rub my hand over my chest to calm my heartbeat.

– … And what about him? — I’m coping…

She’s right. Whenever the wind rises, it calls continuously.

Sun Rui smiles conspiratorially.

– This is the “signal”. I heard that when there is a woman in the house, he removes the bell. This indicates that someone is already “eating” the cake, so no one else bothers to stop by for tea.

I pause for a long time to let her words get through to me.

— And does he have many women?

I guess that was to be expected. A healthy man in his twenties who looks like a celebrity… having multiple partners in bed is hardly something to blink at.

Sun Rui answers:

– Several. He’s hot and talented, heck, even for the money there are a whole bunch of women who want to sleep with him. But he is picky. No one stays overnight, no one leaves their room, and personal talk is forbidden. Besides, anyone who wants to see him has to wait until his daughter falls asleep.

Sun Rui has done an impressive amount of research.

She sits thoughtfully for a while, then turns to leave. I escort her to the main gate, just as I notice my grandfather pulling his cart behind him.

— Grandpa, did you go selling tea eggs again? Sun Rui greets him.

— Xiao Rui, did you come to play with Mian Mian? — My grandfather is getting old and weak; talking to him often is such an idea, we don’t understand much in our speeches, but he is always happy to have a conversation anyway, “I still have a few tea eggs left, here, take it. You need to eat more, you’re too skinny.

Grandfather can be annoying, but also a hard worker.

In the morning he works in the garden in front of the house. After dinner, he usually pushes his cart to the corner of the street to sell tea eggs. He doesn’t make anything worthwhile out of it, but it makes him happy.

— Thank you, Grandpa! Sun Rui takes two tea eggs and waves happily.

I help my grandfather push the cart out into the yard and put it against the wall. Then my gaze moves unconsciously to the neighboring yard.

Through a low fence of rose bushes, I see that there really is a transparent glass bell hanging in front of the door of the off-white three-story building.

A light breeze rushes past, stirring nearby branches. The sound of glass mingles with the sweet scent of roses, which seems to be floating towards me in the wind.

The melodic sound of the wind chime accompanies me all night until I fall asleep. I thought it would keep me awake all night, but somehow I fall asleep.
