“Parents should not bury their children.

But we are grateful to God that he was our son.”

Taras Ratushny, father of Roman Ratushny, intelligence officer of the 93rd Motorized Brigade “Kholodny Yar”, Grigory Kapustinsky, father of Vasily-Yakov Kapustinsky and Vasily Benchak, father of social activist Vitaly Benchak

hromadske

Today is Father’s Day. But not all Ukrainian popes will receive congratulations. Not everyone will be visited by sons or daughters, not everyone will receive a phone call. Because the war with Russia continues, and the enemy is taking away the most precious thing from parents – children. These are the stories of men who lost their sons in the war. They tell how they brought up the heroes and how they experience the loss.

“It’s its time, it’s his Revolution”

Taras Ratushny, father of the intelligence officer of the 93rd Specialized Brigade “Kholodny Yar” and Kiev public activist Roman Ratushny, who died on June 9, 2022 near Izyum in the Kharkov region.

Did I cope with raising my son… I don’t think my answer will be in the affirmative. Moreover, the further, the more doubts about it.

Genes are genes, but more important than family — Roman’s worldview and character were shaped by the community, twins and, in fact, the society in which he found his role, his place and vocation very early. Roman intuitively and very successfully selected people in his social circle, as well as guidelines for development, drawing up his own life plan.

Roma could have died many times before the start of the war. He could become a “dead young man without 50 thousand dollars,” as he was promised by the negotiators from the raiders in Protasov Yar. He had every chance to be on the lists of the Heavenly Hundred. Could die as a baby. I remember counting the steps around the resuscitation room, pushing the thought away. From birth, he balanced on this limit, this could not but affect the formation of his personality.

As a child, Roma was in the shadow of his older brother. He was his protector. And Roma, like a ponytail, felt uncomfortable without his brother. But at the same time, from a very early age, he felt his individuality. And he always made it clear that he should not be measured by the same yardstick with others.

I once jokingly called them punks. The eldest son was already adopting this subculture, and Roma next to him also looked very extravagant, especially. He was offended and asked: “Who said I was a punk? I’m not a punk.” He constantly emphasized his peculiarity. I thought over my image, hairstyle, outfits to the details.

There was a very difficult period in our life. Painful for the children and for me. A period when I could not communicate with them, but could only watch how they develop, go to kindergarten, school. When full communication finally returned, Roma was ten.

And these are already teenage years, rebellious. But Roman always had rebelliousness, it could be seen on the Maidan. He was a participant in the events that caused the Revolution of Dignity. Although Roman was still a schoolboy, it was no coincidence that he was among the students who were beaten by Berkut on November 30. He was there from the first hours of the protest and became one of its leaders.

As a father, I understood that there are things that I cannot influence. Before the Revolution, we had conversations about security, about what should be done and what should not. When the Revolution of Dignity began, I constantly saw my son on the Maidan. Sometimes we went to eat or drink coffee, just talked. I was not at all surprised that Roman was there with his head, arms and legs, because at his age I had about the same experience when there was a Revolution on granite.

Roman Ratushny

Roman was sincerely interested in this. He saw in this his native element. But then, when the escalation began… I remember those barricades on Hrushevsky Street, which hadn’t burned yet. These were buses, and behind them – “Berkutovtsy”. On the other hand, the protesters. And there I saw Roman, I recognized him by his clothes. He tore it off for a second – the son was a little unhappy that dad was interfering and “burned” him like that.

Then we had a short conversation about how this is another level of danger and he must be aware of the threats. Roman replied that he knew what he was doing. And at that moment I realized: my list of tips dried up. Because my experience is really disproportionate. Because this is his time, his generation, his Revolution, in which I am most of all an outside observer and a timid dad.

Then we met and discussed everything, agreed that he would call by phone and tell where he was. Once I turned on the TV in the hotel, there was some kind of broadcast, but nothing special. Roman called, said that everything was fine, he was going with the guys to the subway.

I hung up and heard his voice, but this time on TV. The son said that he was standing in front of the “Ukrainian House”, where the “Berkutovtsy” had settled, and they would now kick them out. That is, Roma fulfilled our agreements and his obligations, but still did everything in his own way. At that moment, I already began to understand that his plan was definitely better than any others.

The same with the beginning of a full-scale war. He didn’t ask anyone anything. The first days he was occupied with only one question – where to get weapons.

I somehow drove away the thought that Roma might not return from the war… The only thing I don’t understand is: how did it happen that children climb into the hottest places ahead of their parents, how did we bring it to such a situation?

I know that Roman realized his plan, albeit in such a short period of time… It hurts to think about how he would open up after our victory, who he could become and what he could accomplish… What the city would have seen , the country and all of us.

I can hardly advise others, because there are no losses that could be measured under one ruler . .. But I could advise you to find a part of that person in yourself every day, try on yourself and listen to what sounds inside, resonates. This will be their continuation. This is the least we can give them, thank them in this way. To complete what our dead did not have time, only we can while we are alive.

“He loved people and Ukraine. He lived for this and died for this”

Grigory Kapustinsky, father of Vasily-Yakov Kapustinsky, who died on February 2, 2023 while performing a combat mission near the town of Kremennaya, Luhansk region.

You know, we raise a child from birth. This does not happen in one day, it is a long process. The child needs to be thanked for everything, even for raising his hand or taking a step, praise, talk and explain.

We did not have any special educational process, but we always had breakfast, lunch and dinner together, and important conversations took place at the table . .. We always spoke as equals, everyone has their own task – who goes to work, who goes to school who help mom. So the children grew up, made independent decisions. Of course, we explained certain things and taught some pointwise things, not without that.

Sometimes we told Vasily to do something, and he not only did it, but also supplemented it. There was no one who wanted to be like us. Reached for the elders, but always strived for more. And he had never been separated from the problems of the family, we were all together. Vasily always showed such wisdom that people were surprised.

Grigory and Vasily-Yakov Kapustinsky

I think he took the example of a man from me and from his grandfathers and grew up on this. And from the age of 15 he behaved like an adult, and I realized that it was we, the parents, who should take an example from him. Vasily got everything himself, thought about where he wanted to go.

Vasily had some kind of natural talent. That’s how an artist has a talent for drawing, he also loved people. He always found a common language with them, did a lot of things, and we supported him. Well, how else? Everything works out for the child, but should we object to something? Of course, they supported and were proud of him.

When the full-scale war began, my son was 24 years old, he was already working, he was a formed personality. He had his own views on life, he saw the country and what it should be like in the future.

In February 2022, I went to the military enlistment office. There were queues, and he still had an unfinished magistracy – two months remained. He was told to go to school.

While completing his studies, he volunteered, helped friends and acquaintances. Since I was engaged in boxing, running, tourist orientation, I was physically prepared and motivated.

In May I started shooting, but an unfortunate incident happened – I sprained my knee. The next six months needed to be treated. And after that he said that he was going to fight – he volunteered to go to the 95th Airborne Assault Brigade.

We, like everyone who sends relatives to the front, were worried, but we knew that he could not do otherwise. They knew that someone had to go. Vasily is not one of those who would hide. Knew what was needed. He loved people and Ukraine. He lived, breathed, and died for it.

This is an irreparable grief, parents should not bury their children. I don’t know what to say to other parents who have lost children. But we are grateful to God that he was our son and we were his parents.

“We understood that he was coming to protect us and the country. And he did it »

Vasily Benchak, father of volunteer and social activist Vitaliy Benchak, who died on October 1, 2022, near the village of Terny, Donetsk region.

When Vitaly went to war, we understood that he was not doing it for himself, he was going to protect us and the country. And he did. I am very proud of my son.

Vitaly Benchak

Valery Popovich / Facebook

Vitaly was very kind and fair. He always showed by example that it is important to keep promises and keep your word. We taught children to work and responsibility.

Vitaly Benchak

Family archive

In our family, one grandfather was repressed, the other participated in the First World War, so Vitaly knew all these stories and was brought up on this.

Until the age of three, until he went to kindergarten, Vitaly was brought up more by his grandmother. His religiosity is also, I think, her influence: he has not missed a single Sunday service since his student days. Even when he was at the front, he called his wife on the phone to listen to the service, and his brothers called him “Chaplain”. His motto was: “God and Ukraine are above everything. As one God is in heaven, so is one Ukraine on earth.”

Vasily and Vitaly Benchaki

Family archive

But I tried to spend a lot of time with him as a child. We went to the mountains. And then I gave him to the circle of the tourist-patriotic direction. And he was very into it. I traveled through the mountains of Rakhiv region, was active in the social life of our region, constantly organizing people around me.

Vitaly, to be honest, did not really share his decisions with me, did not explain why and why he did it. He could consult with me, but he was always sure of his intentions. Even young men.

My son always wanted to be a military man, he dreamed of entering a military school. He consulted with me like a child with a father. I couldn’t object to him, because if I said “no”, I could offend, and I would feel guilty.

But he couldn’t enter the school the first time. I passed the exams well, but when the cross was running, one boy fell, and Vitaly helped him to reach. Because of this, they missed the deadline a bit. He was very upset then, in despair. But I didn’t do it the first time either. Therefore, he said that it happens, life does not end there.

In the end, he achieved his goal, became a military man. Actively participated in the Orange Revolution and the Revolution of Dignity. Then he volunteered for the front. He didn’t tell me what he was planning, but carefully prepared us.

I saw him buying and bringing equipment into the house, so I understood everything but didn’t say anything. Yes, I didn’t want to. I knew that he intended to go, and my words “do not leave” would not have given anything. You know, sometimes people come back from war differently, but he doesn’t.

You never know what he said, but I did not inquire and did not insist. But we continued to communicate closely, he always helped me. Even with work. I am a doctor, and when we switched to an electronic program, he helped me a lot. In our family, everyone is taught to help each other: parents help their children, children help their parents.

On the eve of a full-scale war, Vitaly also did not say anything about his intentions, but we knew that he would go. And so it happened – I came to say goodbye … In June I had an operation, and a doctor, the same age as Vitaly, came to talk before discharge. I knew that my son was fighting. He asked me if I had been running the option in my head that something could happen to him. And I did not scroll, even after this conversation. He was sure that he would return, because he knew how to take care of himself.

In September Vitaliy came on vacation, we spent as much time together as we could. And on October 1, he died. I don’t know how to get through this. This is probably impossible to explain.

The director of the legendary “Midshipmen” Svetlana Druzhinina – about why she chose the prima donna’s daughter for the role of the empress, crazy fans and fines for obscenities on the set

She chose a male profession and copes with it brilliantly, many consider her an iron lady, but at the same time she manages to remain a beautiful, sophisticated woman and a wise, caring wife.

“Life” visited the People’s Artist of Russia, film director and screenwriter Svetlana Druzhinina.

– Svetlana Sergeevna, tell us about your favorite place in your house.

– Every woman should have her own nook. I have an office, my property. There are my books, favorite details, what is shot in my pictures. I use my own props a lot. When everything is from home, you don’t have to pay for it. And as for the house, he was going to gradually. Everything is beautiful with us now, as I like it, but at 19In 1982, our apartment burned down. We were just working on the painting “Princess of the Circus”. This was the period when televisions often burned, and we were among those who were not lucky.

– How did this happen?

– It was June, poplar fluff, and it burns instantly, like a candle. Our whole curtain was down, the TV was standing nearby, and when it caught fire, there was no chance. The apartment is through, the fire dispersed very quickly. Only the youngest son was at home – he was preparing to enter VGIK. I remember coming and I don’t understand why my leaves are floating on the other side of the house? I lifted one, the second, I look up, and there is smoke from my kitchen. Then there were three trials, we argued that it was not our own fault that we burned down, and for some time we lived in the veterans’ house in Matveevsky.

– How did you live as a child?

– I am a pre-war man, from the last century. I was evacuated from Moscow. Was in the trenches near Stalingrad. I know what a dugout, a candle, cold, hunger. Three hundred grams of bread – it was an impossible happiness. I know what a loaf is, which appears for the first time on the table, and my mother says: “Eat.” And I don’t know how to eat it, because it’s like from a fairy tale.

Druzhinina as Anfisa in the film “Girls”. Photo: legion.media.ru

– You were raised by your mother and grandmother. How did they manage to raise such an iron lady?

– I wouldn’t call myself an “iron lady”. We all cry at times, and that’s okay. There was a time that brought up. I am half orphan. Father went missing near Smolensk. Mom, with a four-grade education, went to work in a kindergarten to feed me and take me to the country for the summer. After the victory, she left for Potsdam, where she organized an educational and educational system for the children of military personnel who lived there. That’s why I lived with my grandmother. But I never reproach my mother, she helped me as best she could. She sent things that were not in the Union. I already studied at the ballet school, and such small parcels came, which helped me a lot to feel worthy.

– Was your grandmother strict?

– Strict and kind. We lived in Maryina Grove, there was no gas, no shower, no hot water. There was a charcoal stove in the common kitchen. I woke up at six in the morning, and an enameled green kettle with hot water and a basin were always waiting for me. I took such a shower, had breakfast with oatmeal jelly, ran to the first tram and flew onto the porch of our school. Then it was necessary to put on a tights, it was then much tougher, and run to the second floor to the sixth hall, where Maria Alekseevna Kozhukhova, our teacher, was standing. She had a gold pocket watch. Imagine a long corridor, you rush to her in the hall, but if you are late even for 20 seconds, the door slams in front of your nose. And if you are late, then you stand at the windowsill and work. After all, you can hear the music and its commands too. From time to time she came out with a cigarette, dumped the ashes that fluttered somewhere near me, and if she noticed that I was sweating, she allowed me to enter the classroom. We crawled out not earlier than half past twelve, but we had to take off our makeup. And at that time it was very oily and superimposed in a thick layer. There are many of us… Until it’s your turn to take a shower! Washed, dressed and run to Trubnaya. Sometimes the last tram was waiting for me there. Everyone knew that Svetka Druzhinina had to go home. And my grandmother met me at the house. Sleep around midnight. And thank God! It was a good school.

– Before ballet, you studied at the circus and were familiar with the Pencil…

– We, such half-bald children in balloon cookers, learned elements and stretched in the arena. And suddenly we saw our beloved Pencil. He had a dog Klyaksa, but for some reason there were two of them then. He was without a hat and without a suit, but you could always recognize him by his voice. We were delighted, began to repeat: “Oh, Pencil, Pencil” and the dog rushed to us. And our beloved clown rushed at us, cursing. It turns out that we prevented him from raising an understudy for Blot, but it was still amazing.

Director with her husband Anatoly Mukasey. Photo: legion-media.ru

– Have you completed the shooting of the fourth “Midshipmen”, do you have a feeling of victory?

– It’s expensive, especially historical, multi-figured, and even war – it’s generally unbelievable. We think that this is our final film project. It must happen that by my age and the age of my charming Mukasey (Svetlana’s husband – cameraman Anatoly Mukasey – ed.) it was necessary to shoot the most difficult project of our creative path.

– Domogarov, Kharatyan, Boyarsky are filming for you. Did they agree out of friendship or was there also a vested interest?

– Well, what kind of selfish interest? Domogarov, Kharatyan, Boyarsky, Mishechka Mamaev, the stunning Orbakaite Cross and Olechka Mashnaya. Everyone who came from my previous projects, they all help me.

– Why did you choose Orbakaite for the role of Catherine II?

She is German and this is very important. You can have a good mouth, nose, be a very talented actress, like Marina Alexandrova in the movie “Catherine”. She did a great job, but… she’s very Russian.

Ekaterina was a German, after all, and all this can be read in Christina. Few people know that she is actually von Orbach. Her papa was the heir to those same von Orbachs. She lived in Lithuania until she was six years old, she was taken to the church. It’s all in the blood, it’s all there. Innate inner strength, thought, inner world. Christina has a very precise sense of time and space, she is an incredibly organized person. Yes, of course, Alla was an amazing mother, and Alla Borisovna must be given her due, but then Christina became independent. And when they began to show her: “Mom helped”, “singing plywood”, no, she is a “singing actress”. I went to her concert and was pleasantly surprised – nothing superfluous, nothing noisy, intrusive. Why doesn’t another person on the same stage with big money look like this? Because she has everything in her hands. She is the empress of her position.

Kristina Orbakaite. Photo: legion-media.ru

– You know the history of the Russian Empire very well. Which woman has the most respect for you?

– Of course, Catherine II. Leading the state is galleys. It’s hard work and responsibility. She collected a huge Russia. The Cossacks came to her and asked for forgiveness, with her the annexation of the Crimea began. Such a crazy responsibility, faith and love for the people. She kept saying: “I’m Russian, even though I’m German.”

– Who do you think still ruled the state, Catherine or her many favorites?

– All her favorites were her assistants, because they all had statesmanship and powerful statesmanship talents. They helped her realize her plans. A lot of nonsense has been written about her. You see, there was a lot of envy, and Russia has always experienced the dislike of the West and Europe. Catherine knew exactly how to use her mental, physical, intellectual abilities. Otherwise, she would not have written so many books and plays, would not have corresponded with Voltaire himself, would not have issued laws, she would have had no time to unite Russia. She went to bed at ten, got up at four or five. Until eight she wrote, then drank a cup of coffee. Started at eight. Who starts a business relationship at eight in the morning now?

– Sometimes you have to be harsh on the set, and I heard that you have a special person for this…

– There was such a person, now retired. I myself do not swear by my mother. Before the filming period begins, I gather the whole team and warn that if someone swears, then for the first time they will be forgiven, but with entering into the protocol and deducting fifty percent of the salary. If the second time, then everything, goodbye. I forgive the mat to some professions, only because without it one man cannot understand another.

– After the favorite film of millions of Soviet viewers “Girls” you were invited to Morocco and Zimbabwe. Tell us about it, who called you?

– I don’t know who called, but big postcards came, and then getting a postcard from Zimbabwe was something fantastic. There was something written in a foreign language, as I was later told, in the local one. That’s probably why they missed it. The film was shown abroad, it was quoted there, and a lot of people liked our girls.

– After the film “Behind the Store Window” you had a kind of admirer, who first bombarded you with letters, and then completely began to persecute you. How did this story end?

– Every actress and actor has their crazy fans.
