Samuel Houston (1793-1863) / Personalia / North America.
Nineteenth century
Sam Houston was born in 1793 in Lexington, Virginia, the son of a professional military man. When his father died in 1807, his mother moved the family to the frontier, in Tennessee.
The boy received only a primary education, preferring visiting Indian villages to sitting in a classroom. At the age of 16, Sam left home to travel with his Indian friends. Houston stayed with the Cherokee Indians for three years, during which time he learned their language and customs.
Early in 1813, Houston enlisted in Andrew Jackson’s army, achieved a modest career advancement, fought with the Creek Indians, and received several battle wounds. After the war, Houston remained in the army and served in the Oklahoma Territory. For too close relations with the Indians, senior officers disliked him, and forced him to resign in 1818.
Houston returned to Tennessee, studied law and practiced law. In 1823, Houston was elected to the US Senate, and four years later – the governor of Tennessee. In January 1829Houston marries, but after eleven weeks he unexpectedly resigns, returns his wife to her parents’ house and leaves his native lands, returning to his Cherokee friends.
Living among the Indians, Sam adopted their traditions, wore their clothes, and even married a second time to a half-breed according to their laws. Houston visited Washington several times, where he lobbied his former senator colleagues for Indian interests. There he also met with the former commander, and now the President of the United States, Jackson. The President instructs Sam to go to Texas, where he will ensure the loyalty of the local Indians to the American settlers.
Sam arrived there during the convention in San Felipe, which decided on the statehood of Texas. There is no evidence of his participation in it. Six feet tall, with a loud voice and the power of persuasion, but a heavy drinker friend of the Indians, the Texans liked something, and they invited Houston to lead their small settler army.
In November 1835, Houston formally assumed command of the Texas military and signed a proclamation that declared Texas independent from Mexico on March 2, 1836. Houston did not take part in the defense of the Alamo and Goliad – he was engaged in training replenishment. He avoided confronting Santa Anna until he was convinced that the Texans were no longer a threat.
At the Battle of the San Jacinto River, the Texans under Houston showed Santa Anna how wrong he was. 784 Texans were opposed by an army that outnumbered them twice. On the morning of April 21, 1836, Houston attacked the peacefully sleeping Mexicans and within a quarter of an hour destroyed or captured all Mexican forces, losing only six people in battle. Among the prisoners was Antonio de Santa Anna. Houston forced the Mexican general to sign an order for the withdrawal of all Mexican troops from Texas.
On October 22 of the same year, Houston was sworn in as the first President of the Republic of Texas. Houston played a key role first in recognizing an independent Texas, and then in its accession to the Union. He was the first senator from the new state. In 1860, Houston was elected governor of Texas.
Sam spoke out against secession, calling for state neutrality or the restoration of a republic. Being a slave owner and releasing his son to fight for the Confederation, Houston did not recognize the new public entity, refused to swear allegiance to him and resigned from the governor’s post.
Samuel Houston lived only two years after his retirement, dying in 1863.
