Social intelligence is more than just communication skills

Parker’s mom arrived at the kindergarten early to make sure she filled out all the paperwork required to register her son for preschool group for this fall. She did not forget to inform the director that Parker, who turned four in May, already knows all the letters and numbers. During a short tour of the group room, the boy looked with interest at all kinds of constructors and cars, and even found a children’s carpentry corner with tools here. It turns out that real life in a kindergarten group consists of many other exciting activities besides learning the alphabet. nine0005
Of course, Parker’s mother has high hopes for her son. Like all parents, she wants to see the success of her child and makes sure that later he can enjoy a happy and productive life. She spent a lot of time, effort and resources to give him the best stimulating toys, to pay for special music lessons for preschoolers and to instill in his son an interest in sports. Yes, thanks to his parents, this boy was lucky enough to take advantage of many opportunities that guide him on the path of achievement! nine0005
There is just one small problem. As his father puts it, Parker looks a bit “immature” when he plays with other kids his own age. He seeks to take all control and control over himself, therefore he often explodes in anger. The boy’s mother also noticed that he cannot respond correctly when it is the turn of other children to play, or someone else starts to excel. It is difficult for him to understand the point of view of another person when it comes to an exciting game or joint activities with peers. nine0005
Therefore, at the beginning of Parker’s school life, the main aspect that educators will pay attention to first of all will be the development of his social skills. Preschool teachers see situations like this in their classrooms every day. Children who have difficulty getting along with other toddlers in the group and who do not know how to fit into the community are in the unenviable position when they come to kindergarten: they spend an enormous amount of energy just to earn acceptance through various unacceptable methods! The lack of social virtues prevents them from making the most of the games and learning activities offered by the program. nine0005
Most teachers and parents understand the importance of teaching a child social skills and are able to appreciate the impact that a person’s ability to build relationships with others has on his intellectual development and success. Usually, children attending preschools find it quite easy to build their social relationships at an age-appropriate level, especially if they are supported by a learning environment that is shaped in the context of a good program. nine0005
Relationships: God’s plan for people
A meaningful personal relationship with God is the foundation of all Christianity. Such a relationship with the Lord through Jesus Christ gives us Christians the opportunity to build close and meaningful relationships with other people as well. God shows us the ideal model for developing social skills. He created people in His own image and likeness to enjoy fellowship with them, and He gave us His Son, Jesus Christ, to show us a way to interact with others based on empathy and empathy, taking into account the needs and desires of others. nine0005
God created human beings in such a way that we all need intimate relationships with our own kind, just as He wants us to have a deep connection with Himself. From the moment they are born, children desperately need our attention and affection. From the very first days of his existence, the child feels a pronounced need to be close to loving and responsible parents: it is from this experience that his ability to trust people begins to develop. Doesn’t this remind you of God’s description of our relationship with Him? We can freely take refuge under the shelter of His wings; we are safe in His strong hands. God created us with the need to have affections, intimate relationships with other people, and He gave us an excellent example of how our need for relationships can be met. nine0005
So our need to interact and build relationships with other people is based on God’s attitude towards us and ours towards God. Therefore, it is so important to start instilling elements of social literacy in children as early as possible. Such training will bring undoubted benefits in building a wonderful relationship between our children and the Creator. In this case, children master basic communication skills in kindergarten, which allows them one day to realize and realize the wonderful opportunity that opens before them: to build a relationship with the same God who loves them so much and cares for them so tenderly. nine0005
Social intelligence
The concept of social intelligence is closely related to the concept of emotional intelligence.
The term emotional intelligence arose in the 1990s as a result of an important discovery about the ability of each person to manage their emotions and thereby influence their relationships with other people. A few years later, a huge leap forward in knowledge about the brain led to the emergence of a new discipline called “social neuroscience”. This discipline provides the necessary foundation for understanding the phenomenon we call social intelligence and sheds light on how we develop our relationships, become adept at interpersonal interactions and face-to-face communication. Ultimately, what we want is what God wants: to lift our eyes above our narrow selfish interests and pay attention to the best interests of others. nine0005
The evolving science of social intelligence is opening up amazing vistas that provide new insights into our relationships. Neuroscience has convincingly proven that our brains are wired to build relationships with others. God the Creator created the human brain social, oriented to communication. We are automatically involved in the process of “docking” thinking and feeling as soon as we are involved in interaction with another person. Neural connections help us tune in to the wave of the interlocutor and allow us to achieve intuitive understanding. Thus, teachers and parents who have meaningful close personal relationships with children have the ability to have a significant and lasting impact on a child’s potential to build positive social relationships. nine0005
A new science of human relationships
When we interact with each other, a class of neurons that was recently discovered comes into play. These neurons have been called spindle cells: when receiving a signal from the outside, it is they who immediately become activated, guiding our social decisions. In turn, mirror neurons, another type of brain cell, are responsible for the fact that we can feel the feelings of other people and anticipate the movements that they are about to make, immediately preparing us to perceive and respond to this movement. These are just two examples of how social intelligence works. Scientists have discovered that synchronicity also plays a huge role in human relationships. Synchronization occurs when there is emotional alignment: that is, when two people are on the same wavelength in the process of interacting and talking with each other. Synchrony can be easily seen in the communication of parents and children: who has not noticed how a baby and his mother successfully communicate with each other through gestures, facial expressions, and movements? This communication engages the highest levels of receptivity in human relationships. nine0005
Daniel Goleman (2006, 84) introduces the social intelligence model and offers us a deeper understanding of how to succeed in building meaningful and positive relationships between adult and adult and between child and child:
Social awareness
- Basic empathy – the ability to empathize with other people and feel their non-verbal emotional signals.
- Sensitivity – willingness to listen with full sensitivity to the interlocutor. nine0056
- Empathic correspondence – a subtle understanding of the thoughts, feelings and intentions of another person.
- Social cognition – knowledge of the basic principles of how social relationships work in a human community.
Social abilities
- Synchrony – harmonious interaction at the non-verbal level.
- Self-expression – the ability to properly present oneself to others. nine0056
- Influence – the result of social interaction: the ability to change the actions, choices and behavior of other people.
- Demonstration of participation – concern for the needs of other people, appropriate actions to meet these needs.
You may have noticed that even many adults do not fully understand the possibilities of social intelligence, although these concepts are very important for each of us in the process of building our lives, especially when we think about God’s care and concern towards us. As we grow in our relationship with God, He changes us in such a way that we begin to sincerely care for others and love them with the love of Christ that fills us. nine0005
All these elements of social skills are formed in childhood. Educators are able to develop and improve the quality of those aspects of their classes that relate to relationships, as well as improve their own interactions, including certain components in their teaching methods. Kindergarten teachers want to see a cohesive children’s team in which positive interactions reign, and children have the opportunity not only to feel and see the needs of others, but also to respond to them with compassion and care. nine0005
Although a child may realize the enormous benefits of his cognitive abilities in learning letters, numbers and reading skills, but until he is properly taught the importance of emotional and social health, he may continue to experience all the same difficulties in getting along with other children and will not be able to experience synchronicity and compassion in relationships often enough. A child’s lack of concern for the needs of others can jeopardize his future success, along with all the hopes and dreams of his parents. Here are a few tips to help teachers and parents raise their children the right way:
- Note that recognizing and naming a wide range of emotions is a child’s first step towards understanding himself and others.
- Incorporate social-emotional learning and goal achievement into your daily class schedule. Such an innovation will significantly improve children’s awareness of the principles and mechanisms of the social world.
- Help develop empathy in every possible way by helping children not only feel what others feel, but also act accordingly! nine0056
- Understand the vital role of non-verbal communication in everyday life, seek to find and include in the educational process ways to improve positive messages through such means of communication as the ability to “alter the wave”, receptivity, touch and listening skills.
- Role play about common communication problems in the classroom. Do this in the morning meetings with the children; make sure that they clearly articulate for themselves the main – that is, thoughtful, helpful and caring – reactions. Then provide immediate and specific feedback to all the children who participated in the reflection on the social structure of the class. nine0056
- Use Bible stories to communicate the principles of compassion, thus providing children with an ideal model for social literacy and positive action.
Parents and educators share the same goal: they want to help children learn as much as possible about human relationships and be adept at building and maintaining them. By acquiring more knowledge and skills in the field of social intelligence, we begin to better understand what happens when children interact with each other. We can help them lift their eyes above their own narrowly selfish interests and turn their attention to other people’s best interests. nine0005
