The highest-paying company in the U. S. isn’t a household corporate name, but rather a technology provider that aims to help companies preserve theirs. 

Cybersecurity company Palo Alto Networks offers median total pay of nearly $171,000 a year, according to Glassdoor’s latest ranking of companies with the most generous compensation. That topped Silicon Valley royalty including Facebook, Google and Twitter, as well as tech giants such as Microsoft. 

To compile its list, the career services firm reviewed salaries reported by employees on its platform, factoring in not only base pay but also income such as commission, tips and bonuses. 

While Palo Alto Networks’ 7,000 employees and $2.9 billion in annual revenue make it small compared to players like Facebook and Google, the Santa Clara, California security firm is clearly in a growth industry — protecting organizations from hackers, malware and other cyberthreats that can wreak havoc. The company is also pushing into cloud services, another burgeoning area.

That has put Palo Alto Networks, fueled by swift growth in recent years, in hiring mode, with the company listing some 800 openings on Glassdoor for engineering, sales and other roles. 

“There is fierce competition among tech employers to hire and retain really talented individuals and especially for Palo Alto Networks, they’re looking for really high-caliber talent to help them achieve their important goals,” Amanda Stansell, senior research analyst at Glassdoor, told CBS MoneyWatch.

Not surprisingly, that demand for top talent means tech players dominate the list of best-paying companies — 20 of the top 25 companies on Glassdoor’s tally are in tech. The highest-ranking non-tech company is management consulting firm McKinsey, whose $145,367 in median annual comp puts it at No. 13.

Not that money is the only thing, of course. Stansell said that employees cite factors such as company culture, leadership quality and career advancement opportunities as more important than pay in choosing where to work.

Life and family budget of engineers in Silicon Valley. Part 1

Realnoe Vremya’s columnist Alexander Galkin, who works for Microsoft Corporation, continues to acquaint readers with Silicon (Silicon) Valley. In his new column, a native of Kazan talks about the everyday side of life in the center of high-tech, namely, about how much the initial device of an engineer will cost in a new place.

Income and taxes

In the previous part, I already talked about salaries in Silicon Valley. However, the high six-figure salaries that even a novice engineer starts with are completely atypical for other regions of the United States. This is the main attraction for many. However, in a market economy, the market “wins back” this advantage by increasing costs in the form of high prices for housing, products and services.

First of all, it should be noted that there are two types of taxes in the USA: federal taxes are obligatory for payment by all residents, while state taxes are paid only by residents of that state. Not all states have taxes on personal income, but in California such a tax exists: it adds another 12% to the total tax burden.

With regard to federal taxes, the main one is the income tax (federal income tax), which has a progressive scale. This means that his rate increases with income: if you pay only 10% of income with income up to $9,275 per person, then with income of $100,000 this rate is already 28%. In addition to income, there is also a Medicare tax, a disability tax, and so on, with a small rate and levied in a more complex scheme. The presence of a non-working spouse, children and dependents makes it possible to reduce the absolute tax base.

The US tax return is mandatory for everyone and must be filed by April 15th. In most cases, it is issued electronically. Housing is the main expense in the valley. Renting and mortgage

The main choice when looking for housing is between renting or buying. Living spaces are usually organized into large complexes of 30-50 apartments and, in addition to the apartments themselves, often have common facilities (amenities): reserved parking, sauna, swimming pool (often even heated), laundry with washing machines that accept chips (coin laundries) , a hall for celebrations and meetings with tables, a gas grill, a playground with a sandbox and slides, a place for washing cars and more. Often the community itself is fenced off from the outside world by a fence with an entrance through a barrier (gated community), for security inside, duty is often organized like squads (neighborhood watch).

The price of the apartment also includes the cost of garbage collection, maintenance of the adjacent property and the pool (and in California, almost every complex has a pool), and water and electricity have to be paid separately. By the way, due to the absence of the institution of registration, water and electricity bills are the main proof of residence here: in schools, copies of these bills are required every two to three months from all students (since money for the school comes from the local budget), and they have a good degree of protection from a fake.

Northern California is a very dangerous seismogenic zone, and earthquakes of small magnitude occur here almost every day. Therefore, all residential buildings are built based on a possible earthquake: 90% of the houses are one- or two-story and additionally reinforced.

TV and Internet

Pay TV in the USA. Without concluding an agreement and paying a subscription fee in California, you will not catch a single channel. All TV is digital via cable (terrestrial analog broadcasting is available in a number of regions, but in the valley itself it has already been completely stopped). But for a fee of $60-70 per month, you immediately get about 100 channels, and for another $20 – about 200.

Starting as a DVD rental service, it is now a huge online video library that provides access to thousands of movies and series for a small fee (about $8-10 per month). Most modern TVs and game consoles already have applications for this service. And for those who don’t have it, portable, USB-like devices are sold that provide such a service over a Wi-Fi network.

Yes, it’s not easy with the internet in the valley. Traditional ways to access the “global web”, such as an ADSL modem, are not available in all regions. In addition, they, as a rule, do not provide high speed due to the very strong deterioration of the telephone network. LTE exists, but is very expensive. Therefore, the main access remains the same television cable through which you can receive Internet up to 120 Mbps. Typically, an Internet contract is concluded along with the payment for television (this is called double play, and if you add a landline phone, triple play) and together it costs about $120-160 per month.

Cellular

In the US, all telephone numbers are unified: +1 as the country code, then three digits of the area or service code (area code), and then the number itself, consisting of seven digits. Any phone number is always 10 digits long (the country code is dropped for calls within the US). In the case of large organizations, this number can be extended by an extension number (extension), which must be dialed after the main one.

Thus, it is not possible to tell from a US phone number whether it is a home phone or a cell phone. At the same time, you can receive SMS to both your mobile and home numbers, as well as set up redirection from any number to another. Often, even a home phone is provided with a virtual answering machine with a record of recent calls. In this case, when a call is received on the answering machine, in addition to its recording, voice recognition also occurs. The call text itself is immediately sent by SMS to a mobile phone and by e-mail to registered mailboxes.

Quite unexpected for visitors is the fact that in the United States on mobile phones you have to pay not only for outgoing calls, but also for incoming calls. However, in most cases it is cheaper to buy an unlimited tariff, in which you no longer pay separately for calls or SMS.
