The number of students admitted to the eighth, tenth and eleventh grades is subject to availability and may vary from year to year.

As a general rule, we do not accept students in grade 12 because they find it difficult to follow the curriculum. An exception may be made if the student moves to the area from another state. We aim to recruit students from different schools and backgrounds.

  • What type of student is Buckley looking for in his applicants?

Admission to Buckley is competitive. The middle and high school admission process includes an interview with the student, verification of school transcripts, and recommendations from the administration and teachers. Although Buckley is a family school, we strive to balance consideration of siblings, heirs and children of employees with a desire to bring new families into the community and maintain academic excellence. While we always consider the unique qualities of all of our applicants, the school’s strategic priorities, combined with the overall pool of applicants, may affect our ability to accept all qualified siblings, heirs, and applicants from the children of current employees.

  • How do I reapply if my child was not accepted?

The admissions committee wants to have the most up-to-date and up-to-date information on all applicants to the school, so applications submitted in the previous year cannot be automatically restored. Each student who has not been offered admission to the school and who wants to be considered for the next academic year should call the admissions office and discuss their individual situation. New applications and recommendation forms can be obtained from the Admissions Office. Parents are asked to submit all new forms along with a $125 non-refundable fee and a new photo of the applicant.

  • What is the student to teacher ratio?

Our student to teacher ratio is 8:1. Buckley prides itself on offering small classes and giving students a lot of personal attention. The average class size in middle school is 17 and the average class size in high school is 14.

Class sizes vary slightly in elementary school, but kindergarten has two teachers with a class size of 20-22 students. Classes 1 to 5 have 20 to 23 students and each class has a teacher and teacher assistant. Many of our specialists work with half of the class, thereby reducing the ratio of students to teachers in all classes of the Lower School.

  • Is there a school uniform?

Yes. All Buckley students are required to wear school uniforms. Various options are available, but all students must dress in accordance with school uniform rules. Sometimes the school has themed days where students can wear theme-appropriate clothing rather than uniforms. For example, on Big Red Day, students are encouraged to wear red.

The Buckley Chinese Language and Culture class places the school at the forefront of language programs in the United States. When looking at government-sponsored national initiatives, Chinese and Arabic come out on top. Chinese is a comprehensive language program at Buckley. We start with the “Introduction to Chinese” course in the sixth grade. This subject should not be confused with Chinese I. Much of this course covers the traditional lexicography of the language while keeping students interested in learning about China. Students receive a basic overview of Chinese history, exposure to the culture of the Chinese and other minorities in the country, and the opportunity to practice basic language skills. Students should leave this lesson in the sixth grade with a desire to continue learning China and the Chinese language. The school currently offers a complete curriculum of Chinese IA, Chinese IB, Chinese II, Chinese III, Chinese IV Honors and Chinese AP.
