I and the Bull, I and Baba and Man 9Orlando there are so many unusual and brilliant professionals of auteur cinema that the result is a unique work that has all the accompanying iconic features and has gone down in the history of aesthetic cinema. This is a self-ironic and unobtrusive picture of the magnificent history of Britain.
Initially, I thought that this film was a kind of attempt to comprehend the most important principles of life from the point of view of the philosophy of postmodernism. But now I think that Sally Potter, first of all, sought to make a film that was simply elegant and aesthetically flawless, not weighed down by philosophical reflections. Although there is a peculiar philosophy of subtle perception of life in the novel itself, which formed the basis of the film.
Virginia Woolf’s impressionist novel “Orlando” is written in an expressive language of images, showing the secret of a person’s inner experiences. Virginia Woolf tried to convey her sense of this mystery and make her reader involved in it. And without even laying my hand on my heart, I confess that I am extremely partial to the exquisite and melodious prose of Virginia.
It takes real talent and incredibly good self-confidence to decide to make a film based on such an unusual book by such an unusual writer.

The picture is divided into seven parts: Death, Love, Poetry, Politics, Society, Sex and Birth. And it covers, not too much and not too little, a period of 350 years. Orlando lives the first half of this period as a man, and the second half as a woman.

The first part and the story of Orlando (Tilda Swinton) begins in the era of the decrepit Queen Elizabeth I (Quentin Crisp), who favors the young man and makes him her favorite. On her deathbed, she grants him a castle and a significant fortune, and in return puts only one condition: not to fade, to remain forever young. The second part tells the story of Orlando’s first strong feeling – love for the daughter of the Russian ambassador, whom he met while skating on the ice-bound Thames during the Great Frosts of 1607. The next part tells about Orlando’s new passion – poetry – he invites a famous poet from London to talk with him about art, but the meeting brings only disappointment.
Having parted with the next illusions, Orlando goes with an embassy to Constantinople – this is how the fourth part of the film begins. He makes a political career, but, once falling asleep, wakes up as a person of a different sex.
Now a woman, Orlando returns to England, where the Age of Enlightenment has begun during her absence. After leaving society, Orlando meets Marmaduke Shelmerdin (Billy Zane) and becomes infatuated with him. Already at the beginning of the 20th century, Orlando becomes a mother – and this becomes the finale of the picture.

Project participants: Great Britain, Italy, the Netherlands, Russia, France.

Orlando’s lead actress, Tilda Swinton, is a participant in the most avant-garde and risky art projects in theater and cinema, comes from an ancient Scottish family. Her family history goes back over a thousand years. According to Tilda Swinton, this novel by Virginia Woolf greatly influenced her formation both as a person and as an actress, and the dream of playing this role lived with her from the very time Tilda first discovered the novel.
Swinton identifies himself as a communist, although the Communist Party of Great Britain has long since ceased to exist. But for her, this virtual membership is, in her words: an act of faith in the ideals of justice. Which, in my opinion, does not speak of naivety at all, but of inner purity and honesty.

The role of the elderly “Virgin Queen” Elizabeth was played by an equally elderly and notorious British actor and writer, famous for his aphorisms, one of the icons of the British gay movement, Quentin Crisp. (Crisp died at 1999 at the age of 90).

“Orlando” operator – Honored Art Worker of Russia Alexei Rodionov. He worked together with such domestic directors as Elem Klimov, Kira Muratova, Alexander Kaidanovsky, Vladimir Khotinenko, Alexander Sokurov.
Sally Potter was so inspired by her work with Rodionov on “Orlando” that she invited him to her new film “Yes”.

Famous Dutch artists Ben van Os and Jan Rohlfs created the film’s visual aesthetic, while Englishwoman Sandy Powell worked as costume designer. And it was thanks to them that the film was nominated for an Oscar: for the best work of a production designer and costume designer in 1994 year.

Film Prizes and Awards:
Venice Film Festival Catholic Jury Prize, Italy, 1992.
European Film Academy Award for Most Promising Young Director (Sally Potter) and Best Actress nomination (Tilda Swinton), Berlin, Germany, 1992.
Grand Prix Golden Alexander and FIPRESCI Prize, Thessaloniki International Film Festival, Greece, 1992.
Grand Prize, Catalan International Film Festival, Sitges, Spain, 1993.
Golden Cosmic Needle Award for Best Actress (Tilda Swinton), Seattle International Film Festival, USA , 1993.
British Academy Film Award for Best Makeup and Best Costume Design nomination, London, UK, 1994.

nove With its wing Will dispel forever the remnants of sadness

Film by Sally Potter based on the novel of the same name by Virginia Woolf. Exquisitely beautiful film, caressed at many festivals.

Purely English cinema, about universal problems and values, and even not at the global level, but at the level of the human soul.

The hero of the film is a young English aristocrat, Orlando. We get to know him in the seventeenth century in order to observe him for more than three centuries.

The film, as it were, is divided into seven separate short stories, /just like the seven deadly sins!/.

Death.

Orlando at the royal court, where he liked the aging Queen of England, who, by the grace of God, ordered him to remain young all the time. The queen’s wish, the law, nevertheless, the death of the queen will be the first serious test of life for Orlando.

Love.

Ambassadors come to London, from far away Muscovy and Orlando falls madly in love with a Russian princess. The betrayal of a loved one will be another no less serious test for Orlando.

Poetry.

Unhappy love opens the talent of a poet in Orlando. However, here, too, he fails.

Politics.

Disappointed in almost everything, Orlando goes as an ambassador to the East. There, little by little, he begins to put his thoughts in order. Reflections about the meaning of life, about one’s place and purpose begin to take shape in some kind of system. And,…

Wakes up at one fine moment as a woman.

The same person. No difference. Only the floor has changed!

Society.

Once again Orlando returns to England. And again plunges into secular life. Jonathan Swift and Alexander Pope are not the worst conversationalists, but no more. A woman in society cannot be equal to a man, and without a man she is nothing.

Sex.

And in desperation moving away, /running away/ from society, Orlando meets a man. Dream man. But the man, after some time, leaves, already following his dream.

Birth.

The author brings his painfully born novel to the editorial court.

Some time ago, I read an interview with V. Pikul, where he talks about the synthesis of the psychology of the author, in an attempt to penetrate the psychology of the hero of the work. Stating that it is not possible to be imbued with the psychology of a person who lived more than three hundred years ago. With all due respect to Valentin Savvovich, let me disagree.

Human psychology is unchanging, there are only states of behavior determined by the circumstances of place and time. As well as the internal state of a particular person. The authors of the film go even further, arguing that gender is not decisive either. The human soul matters. Life is the development of the soul and the direction of its development, each of us chooses independently. Somewhere we behave incorrectly, somewhere we make mistakes, somewhere we are betrayed, somewhere we are deceived. All this, after understanding, contributes to the crystallization of the soul, in other words, enlightenment, or the correct understanding of the world.

But the people around us are different. Someone fits into life, someone is still to come, someone is too late, for someone it does not matter. So it was and will be. That is life.

Oh, this alien Swinton – eyes like two abysses, milk-colored skin and red hair …. You fall into her magic instantly.

For me, this film is about how a woman wins her right to exist in the world of men. Many centuries ago, a woman was only a biological species, and to be respected as a person, you had to be a man. A little later, a woman had the right to vote, but no more, to be a woman means to lose everything. And only after many centuries a woman was able to defend herself and become a full-fledged inhabitant of the planet.

A very interesting metaphor, impeccably executed both in visual and semantic terms.

For those who can think and reflect.

The picture is beautiful, but the film itself is meaningless. The plot of Wolfe’s novel, taken as a basis, has been greatly changed, and it cannot be said that this has benefited the film adaptation. Heroes seem to float in the void; one or another line, barely outlined, breaks off. There is no deep thought behind the flashing of eras and countries, and these countries themselves are presented in a superficial and sometimes absurd way (both Russians and Arabs are caricatures, and in the case of the latter, which, it seems, were not in the book, we don’t even we are sure which country we are talking about.Yes, yes, for Europeans, all immigrants from third world countries look the same).
What do we have in the bottom line? Randomly mixed ideas about a beautiful bisexuality that transcends time and becomes a collective portrait of humanity, merged into one character. Was it worth fencing the garden for a couple of banal thoughts about the bisexuality of a person and the equivalence of the sexes? The immortality of the hero / heroine is not explained in any way here, and there is no clue to this phenomenon in the film. And what, it would seem, fertile ground for the screenwriter. But, alas, everything was crushed by the visual side of the issue, which, being important, is not able to replace the meaning. More precisely, its absence.

Tilda Swinton – I do not know if she worked for the idea, but she does not get the image of a young man at all – she is so overwhelmed with femininity.
but even in ridiculously insanely huge crinolines she is a queen
