Eco-romance: a heart-shaped lawn among an oak grove in memory of a loved one

Love, if real, can work wonders. And even when death is stronger, love continues to live in the heart of the one who is forced to stay. In memory of his wife, an English farmer planted an oak grove with a heart-shaped lawn in the middle, creating a living monument to love. When 17 years ago Winston Howes’ wife Janet, with whom they had lived in peace, love and harmony for 33 years, suddenly died, all week long, a devoted husband planted oak seedlings on six acres of land. He didn’t do it randomly. Not at all. The trees were planted in such a way that a heart-shaped lawn formed in the middle, the sharp tip of which would indicate the place where Janet was born and spent her childhood.

For Howes, the lawn, which occupies almost an entire acre of land, has become a real oasis, a quiet haven amid life’s adversity, where he often comes to be alone with himself and indulge in memories of his beloved. For a long time, an unusual living monument remained a family secret, because at ground level the lawn is simply invisible. But how could such a miracle go unnoticed?! Of course not! It was only a matter of time.

Andy Collett captured the “hearty” lawn in all its glory flying over the fields in a hot air balloon. When a symbol of love appeared among the trees, he could not believe his own eyes – it was so unexpected and unusual. “I have my own hot air balloon and fly quite often, but this is the most amazing thing I have ever seen from the sky. It’s just a perfect heart, cleverly hidden from prying eyes. You just don’t even know it exists. You can imagine what kind of love story it was,” Collette shares her impressions.

The idea to create a huge heart on the field in memory of his beloved was born by Howes immediately after the death of his wife. “I thought it was a great idea. It was like an illumination. And I planted several thousand oak trees,” explains Winston Howes. By the way, by several thousand, the farmer means about 6 thousand seedlings!

“When the work was completed, we set up a bench in the middle of the field, facing the place where Janet once lived. Sometimes I come here just to sit in silence and think about things. This is a beautiful living monument that will remain here for years,” says the farmer.

Winston Howes owns a 112 acre farm near Wykwara in South Gloucestershire. The oak grove is located near the estate. The heart-shaped glade is protected by a dense hedge. You can get to the center of the heart only along the path leading to the pointed tip.

“We planted large oaks along the edge of the heart, and then decided to add a hedge as well. The pointed part of the heart is directed towards Watton Hill – Janet’s homeland, ”says Howes. And in spring, yellow daffodils bloom in the center of the heart-glade, planted by loving hands in memory of the one that will never be returned, but which will always live in the hearts of those who were dear. You can’t say anything, from such a hearty landscape design a tear comes out in the eyes, and the soul becomes a little lighter.
