Vladyka Jacob – about the harvest and laborers | Socio-political newspaper of the Nenets Autonomous Okrug

It has been a year since the Naryan-Mar and Mezen diocese, created by the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church in December 2011, has existed. The diocese is also called the Arctic, since most of its territory is located beyond the Arctic Circle. The diocese was headed by Hieromonk Jacob (Tislenko), who had previously served in the Holy Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius of Radonezh. How the young diocese lived its first year, how it differs from other northern estates of the Russian Orthodox Church, we are talking with Vladyka Jacob.

– Vladyka, your ministry takes place in high latitudes, on a vast territory where only aviation, telephone communication and the Internet connect settlements with each other. Tell us about your ministry, what did you manage to accomplish in the first year?

– When my consecration to the rank of Bishop of Naryan-Mar and Mezen took place, one circumstance was noticed. As the Patriarch later told me, on the Gospel on which the hierarchs lay hands – it serves as a symbol of the transmission of Divine grace – the pages of the Holy Scripture were opened where it says: “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few.” This fully applies to our diocese. People often perceive things on the outside of what is being done: the development of funds, flights to remote settlements. This, of course, should be all. But the most important thing is prayer! That spiritual foundation on which the building of church revival and spirituality is built, and which is the basis for the salvation of human souls. The foundation is often invisible, as it is hidden in the ground. But without it, the construction of the building is impossible.

– In your opinion, what events in the life of the diocese have become fundamental, the main ones?

Probably, in terms of the significance of the events that our diocese has accomplished, it is indeed exceptional among the many dioceses of the Russian Orthodox Church, the number of which is constantly increasing. This work – the revival of the spiritual principles of the life of our people and state – is very difficult.

On August 15, 2012, the northernmost church in Russia and in the world was consecrated. It is located in the Arctic archipelago of Franz Josef Land. It was consecrated in honor of St. Nicholas of Myra the Wonderworker – a champion of holy Orthodoxy, the patron saint of sailors, pioneers of the Russian Arctic. It is significant that this was preceded by events completely unplanned by me. By and large, I thought: the consecration will not be carried out this year. Too many things had to coincide, including the weather conditions and the circumstances of the church service, for such an opportunity to appear – to spend a sufficiently long time on Alexandra Island and the Franz Josef Land archipelago. The fact is that the consecration of a temple is not the consecration of a chapel, it is two liturgical days.

The consecration of the northernmost temple of Russia and the world on the island where the northernmost frontier post of our Fatherland is located and where meetings of the State Security Council of the Russian Federation are regularly held on the most important issues of the Russian presence in the Arctic is significant . .. The event takes on special significance as the initial stage of a large-scale project “Russian Arctic”, which received the blessing of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia.

– What was your mission on the icebreaker Rossiya?

– As you know, in September-October of last year I became a member of a high-latitude polar expedition. The purpose of the expedition was to remove the polar station “North Pole-39” that had completed its work, search for a new ice floe and land the station “North Pole-40” on it. The expedition was made on the icebreaker Rossiya.

There was indirect evidence that due to some hydrological reasons, a strait was formed, which began to divide Northbrook Island in two. The task of verifying this information has been before the Institute of the Arctic and Antarctic for a long time, but only now it has become feasible. The Rossiya icebreaker approached the shores of Northbrook Island, which is located in the southwestern sector of the Franz Josef Land archipelago. The weather favored us, and a helicopter with a research group was raised from the deck of the icebreaker. Among the scholars was a bishop.

It would seem that there can be no discoveries in geography now – in the 21st century. The Earth has long been observed by space satellites from outer space. The discovery of a new island is not only an extraordinary phenomenon, but also an exceptional one. For five years, the Institute of the Arctic and Antarctic could not carry out appropriate research work, could not send an expedition in order to confirm or refute indirect data. And it was our expedition that fulfilled the goal!

We exited the helicopter, landing on the coast of the new island. This land is our diocese, the northernmost diocese of Russia. I blessed her. Members of the expedition carried out the necessary work, the results are indicated on the map. The relevant information was submitted by me to His Holiness the Patriarch in a report substantiating the proposal for the name of the new island and the new strait.

This year, the Arctic was consecrated, because for the first time in the history and development of the Russian Arctic, an Arctic journey was carried out through all the meridians of the northern hemisphere of the Earth, in which a liturgy was performed every Sunday. At the geographic point of the North Pole, the consecrated capsule is immersed in the waters of the Arctic Ocean, which marks the eternal existence of the Russian Arctic. This captures the work of Russian pioneers, missionaries, discoverers, navigators, who often sacrificed their lives. A connection has been recreated with the generations of those Russian people who, as we know from the annalistic evidence of the 12th century, went further and further to the North, along the waters of the Arctic Ocean, which our ancestors called with such an expressive name – the Holy Sea.

The drifting polar research station “North Pole-40” was opened. In extreme conditions, when the very possibility of this seemed almost impossible, with God’s help it was done. Russia confirms its positions in the Arctic and the Far North.

– What features did you see in the ministry in the northern territories?

– The North in general requires pure sacrifice, and it is no coincidence that monks were sent to these high latitudes from ancient times, since here dangers, difficulties, and a harsh climate require complete dedication. In our diocese, monastic life began this year, the first tonsure was made. Thank God that the one who took the vow of monastic life was a man who once connected his fate with my native monastery, the spiritual son of which I am – the Trinity-Sergius Lavra. This is Monk Peter.

In 2012, the beginning of female monasticism was laid in the diocese. In the significant year of the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Borodino, the Spaso-Borodino convent sent nun Tatyana at my request to carry out church obedience in Naryan-Mar. I hope that the labors of the monastics will be successful. Courageous people, northerners, whole in their character, selfless, I hope, in those monasteries that will appear in our land, they will find the ideal of Christian life – according to the inner spirit of the feat on the cross, living according to the commandments of Christ.

The past year was very important for the whole of Russia. It marked the 1150th anniversary of Russian statehood. We have completed an important project that received the blessing of the Patriarch of Moscow and All Rus’. He was once blessed by the Bishop of Sakhalin and Kuril, and now Metropolitan Daniel of Arkhangelsk and Kholmogory. This project – “The Far East of Russia” was completed with the consecration of the Kuril Islands. On July 26-28, 2012, the author and developer of the project, the Bishop of Naryan-Mar and Mezen, erected and consecrated crosses on the top of the Bogdan Khmelnitsky volcano and a mountain pass that opens the way to the capital of the Kuriles – the city of Kurilsk. A new project has also been launched, which I told the Patriarch about on Solovki. His Holiness fully approved it and gave it the name “Russian Arctic”.

There are big plans ahead, they are connected, first of all, with the common tasks set by the Russian Orthodox Church and the Synod – to revive true spirituality, the church life of the diocese entrusted to me.

– Who can you call co-workers, whom can you turn to for help? After all, today both people from power and businessmen come to church, do good deeds, do charity work.

– I am very grateful to those who contribute to the state strategy in the Far North. Thanks to their care, complicity, understanding and assistance, with God’s help, new parishes are being formed, spiritual life is being revived, new churches and chapels are being built.

Roman Maryanovich Moroz, a businessman, owner of the Moscow construction company Promkapstroy, a believer, a member of the Russian Geographical Society, became a patron of the arts. Through his efforts, chapels were built in Nizhnyaya Pesha and Ust-Kara. Natalya Alexandrovna Kardakova, deputy of the District Assembly and chairman of the council of the Nenets District Union of Consumer Societies, provides assistance. Consumer cooperation delivers our goods to remote villages of the district, thanks to it, utensils, icons and church candles were purchased for the chapel in Karatayka. Many people help – according to the will of their hearts.

I think that the measure of the success of undertakings will be our – each of us – zeal for doing good deeds. I am talking, first of all, now about Amderma, which has turned from a city of 12,000, a powerful outpost of the Russian North, into a settlement with a population of 360 people. But even there we are creating a church parish and we hope that the good will of the Amderma people will be embodied in the church-chapel.

I recently consecrated a chapel in Chizh. Together with the governor, I visited Nes and Lower Pesha. I am sure that in the Lower Pesha in the near future the chapel will turn into a temple, as well as in Red. Ust-Kara, Karataika, Khorei-Ver, Telviska, Kotkino, Oma and the islands – Kolguev and Vaygach – our entire territory will be involved in this vast process, the essence of which is conveyed by one very capacious word – revival.

– What are your plans for the diocese in the very near future? Still, its territory is larger than the administrative boundaries of the Nenets Autonomous Okrug. Will not that part of the diocese that does not fall under the jurisdiction of the district remain deprived?

– The plans for this year are to serve in Novaya Zemlya, from where I constantly receive messages from Hieromonk Gabriel: he performs services there, takes care of the parish. But my personal presence is necessary. Vaigach, Varandey, Prirazlomnaya – I must definitely visit there in the future.

Another started work is the creation of the parish of the Church of the Annunciation in the village of Seekers, the eight-thousandth village has still remained without a temple. The need for the existence of the church there is clear to everyone. The time has come when this must come true. The village deserves to have a temple there. It is good that the state power in the person of the governor and the head of the Zapolyarny region contributes in every possible way to our creative aspirations, which are so in line with the general strategic line of the state in relation to the North, its economic development and the improvement of life.

– How many churches and chapels are there today on the territory of the Naryan-Mar and Mezen diocese? Often, built church buildings remain “orphans”, since the priesthood is far away – in the capital of the district. Parishes without a priest are like sheep without a shepherd. How are you going to act in such a situation?

There are four churches on the territory of the diocese: in Naryan-Mar, Velikotemporal, Nes, on Varandey. In the near future, we plan to transform the chapel in Krasny and Nizhnyaya Pesha into chapel churches, that is, an altar will be set up there, appropriate utensils will be purchased, and it will be possible to perform divine services.

We are trying to build a chapel in Khorei-Vera, as this has been talked about for a very long time. We plan to build and consecrate a chapel in Ust-Kara. The church on Varandey intends to hold regular services. We are now constantly organizing services in turn in all the churches and chapels of our district. I hope to implement this in 2013.

During this year, the foundation was laid for the formation of parishes in Amderma, Krasnoe, in Iskateli, Telviska.

And this is taking into account the fact that we have an extreme shortage of clergy: the North is not the land that promises an easy life. Not every priest can be offered service beyond the Arctic Circle. In addition, in the settlements themselves, it is not always possible to accept a priest for permanent residence and support a priest. Therefore, we organize a system of “shift” service in all villages.

The other day I met with the chairman of the regional Rybakkolkhozsoyuz Alexei Dityatev: we have outlined new steps for cooperation in order to resume service in the church in the village of Velikovisochnoe, which was built in 2007.

We talked with the head of the Telvisky administration about the fate of the ancient temple in this village. Repair required. Now there is a real opportunity to recreate it. We will work in this direction, because the cemetery chapel, which is in Telviska, is not enough for such a large village. In addition, the settlement has great development prospects, since the plans of the district leadership include the construction of a bridge and the expansion of the housing stock precisely on the territory of Telviski.

At the Council of Bishops, in which I took part in the first days of February, I told His Holiness the Patriarch about what had been done and what was to come. However, the fulfillment of the plan depends on all of us! To the extent that spiritual energy will be accumulated not only by me or the priests, but also by all who are Orthodox residents of the district, parishioners and members of our diocese, these plans will come true.

– In worries about the dispensation of the diocese, probably, there is no time left for social service?

– Why not? Social service is inseparable from spiritual service. This year we began to regularly serve prayers in the maternity hospital. As you know, the Nenets Okrug is now the leader in the country in terms of the birth rate of children per capita. In addition, the number of abortions has dropped sharply this year. People began to appreciate the sacred gift of life consciously. I think that the time is not far off when the Nenets district hospital will receive either a prayer room or a chapel. This is necessary because in grief or illness a person feels the nearness of God.

The priests were twice in the Pustozersky boarding house for the elderly and disabled. We have developed good relations with the education system. This is also a kind of social service – enlightenment. With Rimma Vasilievna Kostina, a deputy of the District Assembly and the head of the Nenets regional branch of the Union of Pensioners of Russia, we agreed on the spiritual guidance of veterans. Of course, the plans include social service at the Nenets boarding school named after A.P. Pyrerki.

The diocese has big goals, which means that hard work lies ahead, but this is how it should be – every necessary and good deed should be done not without difficulty, but with great zeal.
