The fort was built in 1859 to house Confederate prisoners during the Civil War. The fort’s cannons protected the ports of Wilmington and Philadelphia during World War II. The fort is now a state park and museum.
Warm Springs Castle, Boise, Idaho
Idaho Castle was built from local sandstone. The owner of the castle showed his love for films by naming the gargoyle Zuul (“Ghostbusters”), and the wooden dragon – Pete (“Pete and his dragon”). Although the castle is not open to the public, its appearance and surroundings are very much loved by the locals, who often stage Shakespeare’s plays there in the summer.
Clayshire Castle, Bowling Green, Indiana
Pediatrician Mary Jo Smok and aerospace engineer Doug Smok retired in 2013 to become Lady Josephine and Lord Douglas of Clayshire.
Fascinated by the Middle Ages, the couple built the castle as a hotel and home for themselves. Clayshire has a medieval dressing room, a pond full of fish, a giant chess set and a butterfly garden. In addition, fairs are held there.
Nichols Hall, Manhattan, Kansas
This government building has a rather fiery history. It was built in 1911. In 1968, it burned down, set on fire by the enemy of the Vietnam War. The music library of the orchestra perished in the fire, and the piano fell to the floor below. The only surviving notes are The Wabash Cannonball (“Cannonball Wabash”, the name of the train). After restoration in 1985, the building again housed the music school.
Beauregard Castle – Fort Proctor, St. Bernard Parish, Louisiana
As it became known to ProfiDOM.com.ua, the fort was supposed to protect New Orleans, but was damaged by a hurricane. Restoration work was stopped due to the Civil War, and the castle was gradually swallowed up by Lake Bourne.
Now the fort can only be reached by boat.
Oakland Gardiner Castle, Gardiner, Maine
The Gardiner family’s lands were confiscated during the Revolutionary War when drug importer Sylvester Gardiner supported Britain. The land was later returned to his grandson Robert, who built the castle in 1835. The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as an example of the early work of architect Richard Upjohn.
Searles Castle, Great Barrington, Massachusetts
In 1881, wealthy widow Mary Hopkins commissioned architect-decorator Edward Searles to build an estate next to her childhood home. Ultimately, Hopkins married Searles, who was much younger. They say she was forced into marriage. The newly minted Mrs. Searles died in 1887, leaving her entire fortune to Edward, which gave rise to rumors of poisoning, ghosts, secret passages and night burials. Now in a building with marble columns and German bronze doors is a private boarding school “John Dewey Academy”.
Miller Castle, Darby, Montana
This castle was built by Wayne Miller with money from his carpentry work and restaurant management. The whole building was built without drawings – only according to the ideas of Miller himself. The castle has a dungeon (kennel), a fireplace and a drawbridge. In 2002, Miller was going to sell the building, along with a collection of antique toilet seats, but the purchase was not announced. The castle has now been withdrawn from sale.
Joslin Castle, Omaha, Nebraska
This Scottish baronial mansion was built in 1903 in just 11 months. Sarah and George Jocelin’s 35-room home (including a ballroom, library, and bowling alley) was considered the height of luxury. For 44 years, the building served as the headquarters of the Omaha School District. The mansion is now part of the Nebraska Arboretum.
Excalibur Hotel, Las Vegas, Nevada
Opened in 1990, this medieval-themed hotel was the largest hotel in the world.
Renovations since 2006 have removed much of the medieval decor, but guests are still entertained with real tournaments. The hotel is now owned by MGM.
Bannerman Castle, Newburgh, NY
There are two “castles” on an island in the Hudson River. The smaller one is the former summer residence of arms dealer Francis Bannerman and his family. The larger one is the armory building where Bannerman kept the weapons. Now the island is looked after by a trust offering tours of the 19th century buildings.
Leonardo Castle, Enid, Oklahoma
Within the walls of this castle is the largest outdoor playground in the world. 12 thousand volunteers (a quarter of the population of Enid at 1996) worked on a variety of slides, swings, labyrinths and bridges. The Leonardo Children’s Museum owns and operates this site.
Fonthill Castle, Doylestown, Pennsylvania
Antiquarian and archaeologist Henry Chapman Mercer built this castle as a home for himself and a place for a huge collection of tiles and reproductions.
Now it is a museum in which the collection is exhibited. The building has 200 windows of various sizes.
Pinckney Castle, Mount Pleasant, SC
The castle was built as the Charleston Coast Guard in 1810 on the site of two other forts, but quickly became obsolete. At the start of the Civil War, it surrendered to the Confederates and for a time served as a prison for Union soldiers. The fort then changed hands frequently. It was operated by the Department of the Treasury, the Sons of Confederate Veterans (twice), the National Park Service, and the Port Authority of South Carolina (also twice).
Newman Castle, Bellville, TX
Baker Mike Newman built this castle between 1998-2008. for tours and special events. Compared to other American buildings, this is more accurate. It has a church, a courtyard, a perimeter wall, a fortress, and a working drawbridge.
Bull Run Castle, Loudon County, Virginia
Infrequently, the owner of the castle cooks breakfast for guests.
