New Smyrna Beach – Florida’s best kept secret

New Smyrna Beach is just over an hour from Orlando Airport, but it couldn’t be otherwise. This is a closely guarded secret by the locals. It’s all about independent unique quirky bars, restaurants and bed and breakfasts.

The warm Florida sun also makes this a very attractive place for surfers, in fact all airborne sports, so if you want to try your hand at paddle boarding or surfing, this is the place to do it.

Poodleboard Past Dauphins

The water sports scene in New Smyrna Beach is amazing, here there are plenty of options for surfing, kayaking and paddle boarding. We visited the New Smyrna Beach Surfboard to try our hand at a relaxing surfboard down the Indian River and the North Causeway.

Along the way we passed a school of six dolphins and a giant manatee who playfully stopped to say hello – this place is like IRL Finding Nemo!

Turtle Mound River Excursions

© Jacqui Fayman

Rated No. 1 New Smyrna Beach Wildlife Tour, our excitement immediately doubled when we spotted a tray of meat, cheese, crackers, and a bucket of wine. Basically, it was a cool family version of a booze cruise.

As we crossed the water, dolphins circled in the air, chasing the wake, herons flew by, and if you’re lucky, you might spot another manatee or two, dreamy!

Christmas Parade

© Jacqui Fayman

On December 1, NSB held their annual parade. There were all kinds of floats, decorated cars, scooters, little kids twirling clubs and beauty pageant winners… Go USA!

Our favorite was Willy Wonka’s boat, and of course Santa came out to finish off the fun by scattering sweets as they marched. And not just a few sweets, but hundreds!

Public art

© Jacqui Fayman

New Smyrna is synonymous with art, culture, history (and the beach)! We visited a local art group whose main goal is to inspire the local community through art and workshops.

They have a ton, including music jams with locals, Kentucky Derby days, student film festival, charity programs, poetry nights, jazz and blues performances, and a variety of fitness classes.

Inside the Hub you can find handmade, locally produced eco-friendly artwork for sale where the artists work right in front of you, did we mention it was also a converted cinema?

Cruisin’ The Shoreline

We rented beach cruise bikes from Salty Rent (located at the Salty Mermaid Hotel) to ride along the seafront. We drove along the sandy strip for an hour, there is a lot of things in the sea from shoals of seagulls to surfers, rowers and a lighthouse at the end of the bay.

New Smyrna Beach Brewing Co.

© New Smyrna Beach Area Visitors Bureau

We visited New Smyrna Beach Brewing Co. , created by Chris, a resident of New Smyrna. The business started after he brewed homemade beer in his garage for a friend’s wedding gift. It was such a success, he quit his office job and opened his own brewery.

Chris naturally flavors the beer by adding slices, fruits, pumpkin, cocoa beans, vanilla, etc. to create a truly unique taste.

The restaurant bar was hand built with wooden barrel banquet seats and a “buy a friend a beer” board, essentially a much cooler version of a gift certificate. They also have evenings where you can have a beer and have your beer mug custom painted.

Sugar Works Distillery

© Jacqui Fayman

Also on the list for brew lovers Sugar Works Distillery. Owner Thomas spent fifty-one weeks building his distillery, from the fermenter and equipment to the laying of the floor. Made from local ingredients such as molasses, corn, barley and rye to produce whiskey, rum and moonshine.

WHERE TO EAT

Corkscrew Bar & Grill

Alligator bites were served here (if you try the Alligator, try it NSB)! Also, they had huge mojito scallops, the biggest I have ever seen, so sweet and perfectly pan fried, it was the best we had on the whole trip.

JB’s Fish Camp

Decorated with saxophones, road signs, autographed photographs and a piano. It is located on the banks of the river and has been an institution in the area for about forty years. Their stone cakes were absolutely delicious and filled with stone prawns (almost like langoustines). They also have GIANT crab sticks that can be split open and dipped in warm ghee and the scallops were so sweet and addictive no matter how full you are you will find a second stomach.

Half Wall

They specialize in giant sandwiches and beer tastings (some beers, IPAs and stouts are made in their own microbrewery). Their oatmeal bourbon vanilla stout was incredible! There were also coconut and milk stouts and Holidays in Florida and Europe. We tried fried green tomatoes and their incredible Reuben with a HEAD sandwich.

Flagler Tavern

Located on Flagler Avenue, home to the busiest strip of bars and restaurants in the NSB, the Flagler Tavern is one of the loudest and proudest of the bunch, with live music every evening, a surf menu and fantastic cocktails for fun. old night.

Outriggers

A short walk from Flagler is the local marina where Outriggers is based. Specializing in seafood caught in Florida, we were spoiled for choice, but can seriously recommend the lobster mac and cheese. Wash it down with their signature cocktail, The Zombie, which uses three different varieties of rum – seriously, YUM!

Yellow dog eating

Pulled pork skewers, mountain tacos, giant sandwiches, peanut butter Oreo pie; If you don’t salivate after reading this list, we don’t know what will happen. So, when the grumbling starts, head over to Yellow Dog Eats for a big tasty menu in an unusual homely setting.

Ricky’s Dining Room

Ricky’s Poke Bowl Restaurant has recently opened. Based on jasmine, yellow or forbidden rice, we tried the most delicious honey caramelized brussels sprouts and their seafood infused gumbo sauce incl. ahi tuna, salmon, octopus and shrimp.

PLACES TO STAY

SpringHill Suites

Does Kanye West have a criminal record?

We are staying at the newly built SpringHill Suites by Marriott which is located right on the beach at the end of Flagler’s parade of shops and bars. It has a heated pool, huge rooms and breakfast which naturally includes a do-it-yourself waffle machine, guaranteeing perfect waffles every time!

Black Dolphin Inn

The Black Dolphin Hotel rooms were HUGE! With a giant hot tub in the bedroom, a massive walk-in shower and a separate living room, kitchen and balcony. They made us feel so welcome with fresh pastries, chocolates and complimentary 24/7 tea/coffee facilities. And wait… the dolphin camera! Literally a camera they set up in the water that turns on every time you turn on the TV.
