Senior: Los Alamos High School is very rigorous in academics for a public school, so most kids go to college very prepared. The teachers are usually pretty good, although in a small town, there aren’t many options for teachers, so bad teachers don’t get fired. The music program is very good, and offers many opportunities to explore music. The sport departments are decent, and the school has many competitive sports that often win district or state championships.
I think the school needs to improve upon mental health resources. Because of the highly academic nature of the school and the community, I feel the mental health of students is significantly worse than it is at other schools. There is also rampant drug and alcohol use among the students, which likely does not help students’ health, mental and physical…. Read 23 reviews

Senior: I am currently a senior in high school and have been attending Texico Schools since Kindergarten. Some things that I like about Texico is that our school is small enough that the students are close with one another and can have 1 on 1 time with teachers if they are struggling. Our Teachers and Administrators work very hard to prepare us not only for college but also for state testing, they always make sure that we are prepared physically and mentally. We have been awarded as an A+ school in the state for 5 years now. One thing that sets Texico apart from other schools is that we get to keep God in school. We have what is called FCA (Fellowship of Christian Athletes) and we meet every Wednesday at lunch and fellowship together, not a lot of schools allow religion anymore. You don’t have to be a Christian or an athlete to attend FCA, anyone can go. Our athletes are some of the best athletes, our volleyball girls have won state 7 years in a row and have worked hard for those wins…. Read 4 reviews

Senior: Des Moines Municipal school is a great school. Because the school is small, more hands on activities are allowed. This makes it easier for students to engage more in class discussion. Also, more one on one with the teacher is more beneficial for the students to have a full understanding of the subject they are learning. I am currently a senior at Des Moines and I truly believe that they fully inspire me to become sucessful and motivated for my college years to come. Also,Des Moines has a good athletic program. Alum: I’m a fourth-generation resident of Corona and a third-generation graduate. There is no other district in the state (OK, I’ll admit a little bias) that takes such a personal interest in students. It’s all, ALL! about the kids. From academics to FFA/4-H, to sports, they just excel. Many of our teachers/staff/administrators/volunteers are my fellow graduates. The other “adopted” Corona natives are more invested than any big school district I have covered (25-year journalist in NM and TX.) Alum: I just graduated from Animas and I can tell you I wouldn’t have wanted to be anywhere else. It is a very small school so there may not be every sport available, but at our school everyone does everything. There is no such thing as stereotyping because here the most of the students play football, basketball, and track, while also doing drama/theater, FFA, and mock trial. Those same students can also be in NHS and student council. It is also easier to get a ton of scholarships in our small town because you have 14 kids graduating instead of 400. There are a lot of community scholarships as well because the community and the school are work hand-in-hand to make sure the students thrive. Alum: Everything about this school was great. I went to school there my entire tenure. I experienced it as we transitioned into a new school building. My favorite thing about this school is the student-teacher relations that get developed because at bigger schools that wouldn’t be optional. I do miss it, but I am fortunate that I am in college now as it pushed me into the right path. The change I would have liked more is more college readying classes as well as some life skill classes. I think some students after high school may struggle with everyday tasks such as how to do laundry, cook, etc. because they were dependent until they moved on in life…. Read 3 reviews

I have learned so much more since moving from Bernalillo Public Schools to Rio Rancho. The programs are much more organized and information is expanded on enough for one to understand concepts. Rio Rancho public schools sees their importance in the community and strives to make a difference while teaching their students how to do the same. Parent: I think that MLK has been a fabulous school for our three kids. We feel very lucky with the teachers they’ve had. The enrollment has dropped quite a bit I noticed because of the new school opening up and a lot of kids moving to Maggie. It’s now around 680. Although the PAWS (after school activities program) hasn’t started back up this fall due to the pandemic, it’s such a wonderful asset to the school and really well run. The parents and administration have worked hard to make sure that this school has great extracurricular offerings. They also have a STEM lab. As a high schooler who went to three other schools ranging from public to private, TARA far outshines the opportunities, support, and classes that I took and experienced elsewhere. I came to TARA during my senior year with the support and tenacity of the leadership council and my classmates! They truly are miracle workers and wholeheartedly care for the school, the students, and meaningful experiential education. I would have never been able to travel and experience the trips and productions we went on and were a part of (in Covid times) had I been anywhere else.
