New Harvest Christian Center opens preschool to boost kindergarten readiness in Battle Creek

After more than a decade of running food drives and shuttling workers to their jobs, New Harvest Christian Center heeded the community’s outcry for quality childhood development and opened an early learning center for 4-year-olds in Battle Creek, Michigan.

With support from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation and Michigan’s Great Start Readiness Program (GSRP) preschool program, The Harvest Learning Center opened in January 2016, offering full-day preschool for 4-year-olds. Center staff plan to apply for additional funding to expand the program to 2 ½-, 3- and 5-year olds not currently supported with GSRP funding.

New Harvest Christian Center Pastor Ivan Lee, citing data from the Early Development Instrument that only 7 percent of students in Battle Creek enter kindergarten ready to learn, said there are significant barriers facing families that affect child preparedness, such as parental incarceration.

“Just to realize that the majority of kids have a parent or have had a parent be incarcerated at some point in time is kind of overwhelming,” Lee said, adding that 75 perrcent of his students fall into this category. The Harvest Learning Center has two classes with 21 students four days a week and provides transportation and wrap around childcare for students. The center’s three teachers use the HighScope Educational Research Foundation preschool curriculum, designed to help students excel in language and critical thinking. The Calhoun County  school district provides professional development and classroom coaches who meet with teachers once a month to ensure the center’s success with the HighScope curriculum.

“It has been very beneficial for the teachers’ growth,” Lee said of the district’s support. Erika Burkhardt, Calhoun Intermediate School District (CISD) assistant superintendent for Early Childhood Services, said the center has helped reach and support more children of color.

Lee said the school is looking to partner with local community gardens to reduce costs, while still providing students access to fresh, healthy food. They also plan to launch a parent support group and might also offer 24-hour childcare in the future.

“We want to make sure that we’re going at a decent pace,” Lee said. “We want to improve each year and we want to grow each year, but at the same time we don’t want to over do it and put our kids in the same situation they were in prior to coming to us.

Research has shown children who attend a high-quality preschool perform better academically and in the workforce. Keondra Owens, a member of New Harvest Christian Center and mother of three, said attending preschool also enhanced the social and emotional development of her two oldest children, Keon’tre, 8, and Paris, 6.

“It’s very important for my kids to have an education,” said Owens, who also enrolled her youngest child, Precious, 4. “They’re going to need it throughout life. They’re going to need to know how to read, how to write and how to talk to people.”

Lee, who’s proud to provide a service that aligns with the mission of his church, said the community and parents are delighted with the school’s performance.

“It’s core to our faith to be helpers for those that need help,” he said. “Our mission is to reach the unreached and this does it in so many ways.”

Municipal autonomous preschool educational institution Kindergarten No. 40 of the city of Chelyabinsk

nature gives us a lot of beautiful, tasty and healthy things. How many delicious fruits and vegetables ripen in people’s gardens, how many different mushrooms can be found in the forest. In the period from 4. 10-8.10.2021, the thematic week “Harvest” was held in the “Kolobok” group. 2020 Harvest exhibitions

In the senior group “Solnyshko” the exhibition “Harvest over the edge” was successfully held. Parents and children in joint work saw the unusual in the ordinary: there were heroes of fairy tales and cartoons, and the natural world. And what a pleasure to look at the smallest details of these creations!

At the end of the “Colors of Autumn” week, parents of the “Teremok” group were offered a video master class “Magic Colors of Autumn” for joint activities with children on the weekend. The children drew colorful autumn trees.

We meet autumn with high spirits! And the guys of the group Rosinka brought different vegetables and fruits grown together with their parents to the theme of the week “Harvest”. The Kapitoshka group got a mini-exhibition of crafts from the fruits “Wonderful Transformations”. Funny little animals delighted children and adults, cheered up on rainy autumn days.

In the group “Kolobok” there was an exhibition on the theme “Fairy Tales of Autumn”. Wonderful crafts were made from a variety of natural materials: dried leaves, cones, twigs, vegetables and fruits, bark, moss, etc. Each composition was original and unique in its design.

A crop of vegetables has been grown in the kindergarten “Firefly” –

The new kindergarten has been pleasing children and their parents for more than six months. “Chulymskaya Gazeta” visited and looked at how “Firefly” lives now.

Today, the kindergarten is almost 50 percent full, about 90 children. Of course, there are even fewer children in the summer, but despite this, life in the kindergarten is in full swing. The garden is equipped with the latest modern design and technology: bright rooms, spacious, comfortable.

It is not easy to get into the kindergarten: there is a pass system. All parents have a special key, without which it is impossible to even enter the kindergarten. The same key opens the door to the building itself. If the parents have forgotten or lost the key, they will have to go through a difficult procedure, let’s say, identification. Among other things, the guard has a list of parents and relatives – those who are allowed to meet the child from the group or escort there. Surveillance cameras are installed around the perimeter. You can view the recording both in real time and for the past few days. Security monitors the monitors and the safety of children all the time.

The entire first floor of the kindergarten is intended for nursery groups attended by children aged 1-2. For them there are separate entrances from the ends of the building, equipped with a wheelchair lift. On the ground floor there is also a medical office, equipped with everything necessary for receiving an ENT and an ophthalmologist. Now the kindergarten is preparing to obtain a license to provide medical services, and immediately after that, a treatment room will start working, where children, according to their age and vaccination calendar, will be vaccinated. Parents will no longer have to go to the clinic with their children, the kindergarten will take care of vaccinations.

Here, on the first floor, there is a catering department. Behind a seemingly ordinary door is a huge kitchen with cold rooms, warehouses and rooms for staff, separate workshops with modern equipment. Employees enjoy working in this well-equipped kitchen, and the latest automated kitchen gadgets allow you to perform large amounts of work without spending a lot of effort. At first glance, the catering unit looks like the kitchen of a good restaurant, but children’s laughter outside the window reminds us that we are in a kindergarten.

The odors in the catering department are such that even an absolutely full person will feel hungry again. Fortunately, a perfect ventilation system does not allow these delicious smells to spread throughout the kindergarten, and nothing distracts children from classes and games. In addition, the ventilation system is located throughout the building and allows you to regulate the temperature in the premises at any time of the year. In winter, in the garden, the temperature in the rooms is at the upper permissible limit, around 24 degrees, and in summer it is quite fresh, and it is comfortable to be in children’s groups.

All children’s groups, regardless of age and location, are equipped in the same way: a spacious hall for receiving children, where changing cabins are located, at the entrance there are large drying cabinets, they allow children’s shoes to remain dry after long walks at any time of the year. The group room is also spacious. In addition to many toys, the groups have modern computers for teachers, TVs and projectors for educational activities for children. Curtains with 100% light protection are fixed on the windows for a comfortable sleep in children’s bedrooms. Nothing prevents children from having a good rest after a hearty lunch.

There are several extra places for children to practice in the garden. There are separate rooms for teachers of additional education, a psychologist, a speech therapist, and even an English language study room. Easels are installed in the art room, and children, while studying, can feel like real artists. Physical education takes place in the gym, where there is a Swedish wall and there is all the necessary sports equipment. And music lessons are held in the assembly hall, which has its own stage and musical instruments. There is also a dressing room with a large number of ready-made costumes. Children’s holidays in the garden are more interesting than ever.

There is also something to do outside. All playgrounds are equipped according to the age of the children. Additional security measures are provided for the smallest, and older groups have a playground for free time. By the way, in the center of the playground there is a device that repels snakes and other unwanted guests from the forest. One device is enough to ensure safety throughout the outdoor playground.

In addition to running around and playing, the children are busy taking care of the plants. In the spring, together with the teachers, they sowed seeds and watched how a sprout appeared from a small seed, and then a full-fledged flower, which was planted in a flower bed. And now the children water the plants and enjoy their beauty. But employees are not only busy with flowers: they also monitor the harvest of potatoes, carrots and other vegetables for the kitchen of the kindergarten. The kindergarten maintains a large garden on its own, on its own and on its own initiative. Now carrots, beets and other vegetables are practically not ordered from suppliers – everything is from their own garden. This garden appeared thanks to the initiative employees and the head of the Chulymsky district Svetlana Kudryavtseva – she helped with seeds, seedlings and assisted in the delivery of land for the potato patch. And now, despite the active independent work of the kindergarten, Svetlana Nikolaevna continues to come to visit and monitor the work of employees.

Irina Kislyakova

Firefly director Irina Kislyakova is proud of all her employees: all of them are young, active and enterprising. But she spoke in more detail about the physical education instructor Elena Vlasenko: “I would like to mention our physical instructor Elena Vyacheslavovna. She is young, her eyes are burning, the children go to her with pleasure, and we see the result of the work. Children know where the right-left is, they know rebuilding in a row, line, column. I see results in my son, I see how he learned to march. She manages to collect and organize all the children. The children are happy and she herself is happy, because she sees success.”

Irina Korobova, teacher of additional education, is also pleased with her work and its results, especially when she sees that the children proudly show their parents crafts and applications made in her classes.

However, Irina Evgenievna’s eyes burn no less than those of the children and her employees. In the next five years, the kindergarten plans to focus on patriotic education and then organize a small museum about the Motherland. There are also plans to organize acting classes for children. A large dressing room allows you to try on any role. Also, despite the existing excellent technical equipment of the kindergarten, Irina Evgenievna wants to install additional video cameras in the corridors, sports and assembly halls. It remains only to get the approval of all the available ideas from the administration and continue active educational work.
