New Beginnings: A Discussion Guide for Living Well With Diabetes

About 37.3 million adults in the United States have diabetes. It is a major cause of heart disease and stroke and the leading cause of kidney failure, nontraumatic lower limb amputations, and new cases of blindness among adults. The good news is that people with diabetes can reduce their risk of these complications by managing their blood sugar, blood pressure, and blood lipids (cholesterol). They can also get preventive care for their eyes, ears, feet, teeth, and kidneys.

Diabetes self-management education and support (DSMES) services provided by a diabetes care and education specialist (DCES) play an important role in helping people with diabetes reduce their risk of complications and improve their quality of life. In addition to teaching self-care behaviors such as healthy eating, physical activity, blood glucose monitoring, and taking medicines properly, DSMES services include goal setting, reducing risks of diabetes-related complications, problem solving, and developing strategies to improve emotional well-being.

New Beginnings: A Discussion Guide for Living Well With Diabetes is a tool to help people with diabetes and their family members take positive action to manage the disease. New Beginnings is not a required component of delivering DSMES services but can be used to supplement the provision of DSMES services as well as in diabetes support groups.

New Beginnings uses stories, activities, and facilitated discussion to address the emotional impact of diabetes. It focuses on helping people with diabetes and their families manage diabetes and build positive, supportive relationships. It is tailored to the needs of African Americans—given the higher rates of diabetes and of diabetes-related complications in this population group. This guide is intended to:

  • Help group leaders facilitate discussions about the emotional side of living with diabetes
  • Help people with diabetes identify family and social support needs and develop goal setting, positive coping, and problem-solving skills

When faced with a situation where you may be unable to bring your group together in-person or you want to further your program reach, facilitating New Beginnings online is a great way to provide support to your participants at home.

Even if you cannot meet in person, you can still create a supportive and inclusive environment that empowers your participants to live well and feel well with diabetes.

See the Connecting Thread: Facilitating New Beginnings Online [PDF – 221 KB] for more information and the Going Virtual Tips in each module.

How to use this guide?

The discussion guide has seven modules with tools and questions for leading small group discussions with people who have diabetes and their family members. Topics include:

  • The emotional side of managing diabetes.
  • Family support.
  • Goal setting, stress management, and problem solving.

Who can use this guide?

New Beginnings can be used with faith-based, community-based, worksite, and other diabetes support groups, whether in-person or online. Discussion leaders can be diabetes care and education specialists (DCESs), health educators, community health workers, peer counselors, or anyone experienced at leading support groups.

New Beginnings discussions do not focus on giving medical advice, but it may be helpful to have a DCES or other health care professional serve as an advisor and participate in some sessions to provide more information.

What is the ideal setting for a New Beginnings discussion group?

New Beginnings discussions can take place anywhere that provides privacy for the group, comfortable seating for all participants, and equipment to play the videos or audio, such as a computer and projector or a mobile device.

Discussions are designed for groups of up to 10 people, but can also be adapted for use with very large groups or a panel discussion.

How can I use this guide?

Each module can stand alone, or they may be used together as part of a series. Choose the activities and stories that will work best for your group and use them in any order.

In addition to the modules, New Beginnings includes seven “Connecting Threads.” These group facilitator resources include information on topics that can be shared in the New Beginnings sessions, depending on the needs of your participants.

New CDC guidance reintroduces mask requirements

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends indoor masks even for vaccinated people

New CDC guidance issued earlier this week due to outbreak coronavirus have led to the reintroduction of face mask requirements in many cities and states, while many Americans complain that ever-changing health advice is confusing them.

The CDC’s updated advice was prompted by new data showing that even vaccinated people can carry the virus in rare cases, CDC director Rochelle Walensky said Wednesday. At the same time, she emphasized that vaccines bring results, preventing complications, hospitalizations and deaths. Walensky added that the vast majority of new infections are in people who have not been vaccinated.

The state of Nevada and Kansas City, Missouri, have reintroduced mask requirements. At the same time, the governors of Pennsylvania and South Carolina have promised that the authorities of these states will refrain from reintroducing more stringent restrictions.

School districts across the country are trying to navigate the latest guidelines requiring all students, teachers and school visitors to wear masks indoors. However, several pro-Republican states have already been quick to declare the illegality of such orders. The leadership of the Republican Party in Arkansas is considering revising the April law banning the introduction of mask mandates, trying to apply it to schools.

Automaker Ford Motor has made it mandatory for all employees and visitors to the company’s factories in Missouri and Florida to wear masks. These two states have been particularly hard hit by the latest wave of infections.

There are now an average of more than 60,000 daily infections in the United States due to the Delta strain, which is rapidly spreading among unvaccinated people.

Google’s management has postponed until mid-October the scheduled return to office for most of its more than 130,000 employees on September 1st. Another major tech company, Apple, has taken similar action. The company’s management announced on Wednesday the introduction of mandatory vaccination for all employees. President Joe Biden said Tuesday that he is also considering imposing the same requirements on federal employees.

Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolfe said he is not considering tightening mask-wearing requirements in schools and across the state, arguing that such measures were necessary before vaccines were available.

New recommendations issued by the CDC apply to areas where at least 50 infections were recorded for every 100,000 people in the last week. This applies to approximately 60% of the entire US territory. Almost all southern and southwestern states fall under the recommendations. Most areas in the northeast of the country, with the exception of New York and Boston, do not meet the new CDC guidelines.

Miami-Dade County Democrat Mayor Daniella Levin-Cava on Wednesday announced tougher indoor mask requirements except for restaurants and other private businesses. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed legislation in May allowing state governments to lift local restrictions to combat the pandemic, including mask-wearing requirements and business bans.

The St. Louis County Council in Missouri voted Tuesday to remove the mask requirement, just a day after the county became one of the first in the country to reintroduce the requirement. However, the head of the district, Democrat Sam Page, on Wednesday called the issue “political” and insisted that the mandate remain in force.

Kansas City Democrat Mayor Quinton Lucas has reintroduced the indoor mask requirement in Missouri’s largest city.

According to the latest data, two-thirds of American adults have received at least one dose of the vaccine.

SPbNIIVS and FGBUN IT FMBA of Russia will raise the issue of influenza vaccination

SPbNIIVS and FGBUN IT FMBA of Russia will raise the issue of anti-influenza vaccination

The St. Petersburg Research Institute of Vaccines and Serums will act as a strategic partner of the All-Russian Scientific and Practical Conference “Continuity and Consistency GxP GxP dedicated to the FSBI-FMIT8 anniversary of Russia”, Within the framework of cooperation, SPbNIIVS will support the key theme of the event related to safety in health care, and will reveal the issues of influenza vaccination. An information campaign in support of influenza prevention will be held in September 2020 on the online platform of the official operator of the conference, the Pharmprobeg intersectoral association.

There is an opinion that “you don’t die from the flu”. But, unfortunately, this is not the case. In the current epidemiological season of 2020 alone, for example, 250,000 hospitalizations and 14,000 deaths from influenza 1 were registered in the United States. In Russia, in recent years, thanks to the organization of a targeted vaccination campaign and comprehensive efforts to inform the population, influenza vaccination coverage has been significantly increased, which contributed to a steady decrease in the incidence. The incidence of influenza and SARS in the epidemiological season 2018/2019was 8.6% lower than the previous one. In preparation for the upcoming epidemic rise in the incidence of influenza and SARS, more than 70.8 million people were vaccinated against influenza – 49% of the population of the Russian Federation, including more than 5.8 million people vaccinated at the expense of employers 2 . WHO and CDC 3 remind that vaccination remains the best way to prevent infection and its potentially dangerous complications 1 .

In 2018, the trivalent inactivated vaccine “Flu-M” from the leading Russian developer of the St. Petersburg Research Institute of Vaccines and Serums of the FMBA of Russia (SPbNIIVS) entered the Russian market. Today, the vaccine is purchased by the state for the annual campaign for the prevention of influenza 4 . In 2021, SPbNIIVS plans to launch its quadrivalent influenza vaccine Flu-M Tetra on the Russian market.

The appearance of a modern domestic vaccine on the market, which is in no way inferior in efficiency and safety to the best foreign analogues, can certainly increase the level of public loyalty to vaccination for the prevention of influenza. According to health experts, no less important factors are the modernization of the National Immunization Schedule and the promotion of the WHO strategy “Immunization throughout life” in the country 5 , which suggests vaccination at any age as a social norm and standard of medical care. This strategy has been adopted in the Russian Federation.

It provides for ensuring the availability of vaccinations for the adult population, informing about the need for vaccination, monitoring the behavioral and social reactions of society and young people to immunization.

Immunoprophylaxis by commercial enterprises is of particular importance. At the peak of a flu epidemic, up to 30% of employees can become ill each year. Employers bear the indirect costs. Employees who go to work sick or before full recovery experience a 50% decrease in labor productivity 6 . That is why socially responsible employers not only strongly recommend influenza vaccination to their employees, but also organize office vaccination campaigns, including within the framework of VHI programs.

“This year, the Institute of Toxicology of the FMBA of Russia raised a rather important and topical issue during the events dedicated to the 85th anniversary of the institution – life safety. And of course, in this context, the topic of influenza prevention cannot be ignored. Especially during the season of exacerbation. We fully and completely support our colleagues in their good undertakings and congratulate all the employees of the Institute on this significant and respectable date”, noted Viktor Trukhin, director of FSUE SPbNIIVS FMBA of Russia .

“We believe that the prevention of influenza is one of the most important components of the life safety of the population of our country. And we are very pleased that this issue will be reflected in the permanent online platform of Pharmprobeg, dedicated to the 85th anniversary of our institution. We thank our partners from SPbNIIVS for their support and look forward to long-term and effective cooperation in the joint promotion of important expert information in the external environment”, – commented on Maxim Ivanov, director of FGBUN IT FMBA of Russia.

Federal State Unitary Enterprise SPbNIIVS FMBA of Russia – a recognized leader in the development and production of influenza vaccines in the Russian Federation.

Today SPbNIIVS is the first Russian exporter of influenza vaccines. The enterprise is included in the list of organizations that have a significant impact on the industries and trade of the Russian Federation (Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation) and in the list of backbone enterprises of the pharmaceutical and medical industry of St. Petersburg.
SPbNIIVS represents Russia in the Association of Vaccine Manufacturers of Developing Countries (DCVMN) since 2017 and the International Federation of Pharmaceutical Manufacturers (IFPMA) and the Influenza Vaccine Suppliers Association (IVC) since 2014.
Key preparations: Institute’s own development, inactivated influenza vaccines Flu-M and Flu-M Tetra, Tuberculosis allergen (mantoux test).

FGBUN IT FMBA of Russia is a medical scientific institution engaged in fundamental research in the field of toxicology, pharmaceutical chemistry and pharmacology, as well as the creation on this basis of new means and methods for the prevention and treatment of poisoning.
The Slovak National Accreditation Service – (SNAS) confirmed the competence of the Testing Center for Preclinical Studies of the FGBUN IT FMBA of Russia in the field of toxicological testing in accordance with the principles of GLP OECD. This international accreditation for compliance with the principles of good laboratory practice ensures the recognition of the results of preclinical studies of chemical, pharmaceutical, veterinary, agricultural products in the countries of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, as well as in the countries of the Eurasian Economic Union. GLP certificate of the Testing Center for Preclinical Research FGBUN IT FMBA of Russia is the first certificate in Russia with this area of accreditation.

ALL-RUSSIAN PHARMPROBEG is an expert cross-industry association and an annual automobile press tour, the purpose of which is to draw public attention to the most important issues of national goals in the field of healthcare and related industries, as well as to develop and support the entire chain: from regulators, manufacturers, distributors and pharmacy segment to medical communities and patient organizations. Due to the unfavorable epidemiological situation due to the outbreak of coronavirus infection (COVID-19), in order to prevent its spread on the territory of the Russian Federation, Pharmprobeg-2020 switched to a virtual format and became a permanent expert online platform.
