You may have heard that sharing a nanny is a great way to save money on child care. It’s true! A nanny share often costs less than paying for a traditional child care center or for a private nanny, but exactly how much money could a nanny share save you?

The cost of an nanny vs. a nanny share

First, consider what you’d pay for a nanny to care for one child:

According to the Care.com 2020 Cost of Care surveythe national average cost of a nanny averaged $29,380 per year. This can, of course, vary based on where you live, what the nanny is hired to do and how much experience they bring to the position.

Next, compare that cost to how much you might spend on a nanny share:

The overall cost of sharing a nanny is about two-thirds what you’d typically pay to have your own. Paying two-thirds the average cost of $29,380 per year means you’d pay about $19,587 per year by choosing a nanny share.

Now here’s how much you could save by choosing a nanny share:

According to the Care.com 2020 Cost of Care surveythe national average cost of a nanny for one infant child averaged $565 per week and that figure continues to rise. Two-thirds of $565 is about $377, which would add up to about $188 in savings a week, about $816 in savings a month or $9,793 in savings a year, if you chose to share a nanny with another family.

Nanny* Nanny Share** Savings
Per Week $565 $377 $188
Per Month $2,448 $1,632 $816
Per Year $29,380 $19,587 $9,793

* All nanny rates are for one infant child, according to data from the Care. com 2020 Cost of Care survey.

** All nanny share rates are calculated as two-thirds the cost of the nanny rates shown and are the estimated cost for one family, based on a two-family nanny share.

How do 2 families share the cost of a nanny?

Sharing a nanny usually means the two families involved split their nanny’s hourly fee. Care.com spoke with several families all over the U.S. to learn more about how families share the cost of a nanny. They reported paying between $12 to $26 per hour total — or $6 to $13 per family — for their nanny shares. Rates will vary greatly depending on where you live. For example, the average hourly rate for a shared nanny in San Francisco is $24 to $26 — or $12 to $13 per hour for each family.

Depending on your needs and the needs of your share family, there are many other factors to consider when calculating the overall cost of a nanny share. We’ve outlined a few of the more common ones in the following section.

Factors that contribute to the cost of a nanny share

While every nanny share is unique, here are a few of the more common factors that could contribute to the cost:

  • How many children will nanny watch? If a nanny charges $15 per hour for one child and $18 per hour for two, the nanny share families may opt to pay $9 per hour each. However, if either of the children is an infant or has allergies or special needs, this may mean additional work for the nanny, and that parent may consider paying a little more than the other.
  • Will you need to buy extra supplies or gear? Consider whether you and the other family will need to buy extra equipment or supplies, such as double strollers or organic food. If you stick to one hosting location, you’ll only need one of everything, which could save you money. One group of parents in a nanny share decided that if one of them bought an item for the group, they’d add it to a shared expense list and then split it up once per fiscal quarter.
  • Are you offering your nanny benefits? One Bay Area mom says offering two weeks of paid vacation and paid holidays is standard practice there while a Portland, Oregon mom pays sick leave but does not pay her nanny for time off.
  • Does your nanny have extra skills or certifications? A nanny who has extra skills, experience, or safety certifications on her resume typically will charge a little more for her services. (And it’s only fair for her to do so because those are added benefits for your child.) So, if it’s really important for you to have a nanny who speaks Mandarin, or who has a water-safety certification, then consider paying a little more than you normally would.
  • Will you have your nanny help around the house? Are you considering having the nanny take on extra tasks outside of her traditional child care job? We’re talking about things like laundry, walking the dog, running errands or cleaning the house. If you’re asking her to do more than just take care of the children, it’s only fair that you pay her more for that work, too.
  • Will the nanny drive the children? Some families choose to have their nanny drive the children to and from school, practices and rehearsals. Typically, they’ll decide to reimburse their nanny for the cost of car travel. Each year, the IRS issues a standard mileage reimbursement figure for business. The 2020 rate is 57.5 cents per mile. Here are some ways to reimburse a nanny for gas and mileage.
  • Have you thought about nanny taxes? Nanny taxes are a combination of federal and state taxes that families are expected to pay when they pay a nanny — or any household employee — $2,400 or more in a calendar year. Make sure to learn the unique payroll and tax rules to follow when you’re in a nanny share. You can also check out the nanny tax calculator for an easy way to estimate payroll costs, nanny taxes and possible tax breaks.

Once you’ve considered all the factors involved in the overall cost of a nanny share, you’ll be in a great position to come up with a budget and plan that respects what both families are comfortable spending.

7 things you should know before starting a nanny share

Nanny shares have become a popular way for families to benefit from in-home care for their children while reducing the costs of a caregiver. But many parents still aren’t sure what goes into organizing a nanny share, or if they’re a good fit for their family. If you’re still new to the concept, here’s what you need to know.

What’s a nanny share?

A nanny share is an arrangement between two (or sometimes more) families who hire a nanny to care for both families’ children at the same time. Nanny shares can be especially helpful for neighbors who are on the same schedule and only have 1-2 children each. These arrangements also have a cost benefit—both families agree to split the cost of child care, while the nanny still receives a fair hourly rate.

If you’re interested in starting a nanny share, here are some things to consider before you jump in.

1. Know what to look for in a nanny share family

A nanny share won’t work with just any family. When thinking about starting a nanny share, ask yourself these questions:

  • Do you share a similar outlook on parenting? Discipline, diet, vaccinations, nap schedule, and more should be considered. This way your nanny can be consistent in how they care for each family’s children.
  • Do you genuinely like the other family? You’ll be working closely together, and if all goes well your nanny share could last for several years.
  • Do your children get along? Each family’s kids will be spending a lot of time with each other. Allow them to get together before starting your nanny share and watch how they interact.
  • Are both family’s children about the same age? Having kids that are similar ages makes it easier for your nanny to schedule activities and coordinate nap times. And if one family’s children are older, they may “age out” of the nanny share before the other family.
  • Do all of the parents get along with each other? How you communicate, respect, and interact with each other may expose some issues that could impact your relationship.

2. Find the right nanny for your arrangement

You’ll want a nanny who has experience with nanny shares and caring for multiple children. Pay close attention to their communication and organizational skills. These will be even more important when working for two different families.

3. Determine a fair hourly wage

Nanny shares are attractive for caregivers as they can earn more money than when they’re working for a single family. In a nanny share, each family typically pays two-thirds of a caregiver’s normal hourly rate.

Nanny share hourly rate example:

Let’s say you’d pay a nanny $20/hour if hiring on your own. Then you and your nanny share family would each pay about $13-14/hour for a total of $26-28/hour. Make sure each family is paying at least minimum wage, which is the highest of the federal, state, and local rates. You’ll also need to pay time and a half for hours worked over 40 in a week.

4. Put together a nanny share work agreement

A nanny work agreement or contract will spell out expectations and responsibilities for your nanny as well the families. Include details like:

  • Work schedule
  • Location of work
  • Hourly pay rate
  • Overtime rate
  • Pay day
  • Job responsibilities
  • Benefits
  • Paid time off
  • Sick time

Review the document with your nanny and have all parties sign the agreement.

5. Understand tax, wage, and labor laws that apply to household employment

Your nanny is an employee, not an independent contractor. That means both families are considered employers and will need to obtain federal employer identification numbers and register as employers with the state. You’ll both pay Social Security and Medicare taxes as well as federal and state unemployment taxes. Each family will provide a W-2 to your nanny and file Schedule H with their own personal tax returns. As mentioned, minimum wage and overtime rules apply. There may also be state- or city-specific rules to follow such as paid sick leave, family leave, or a Domestic Workers’ Bill of Rights.

If you’d rather not deal with the hassles of setting up as an employer, figuring out payroll, and remitting taxes, Sittercity has partnered with GTM Payroll Services to provide a comprehensive nanny payroll and tax service for families. GTM has experience in helping families set up the administrative side of nanny shares and can help you every step of the way.

6. Get workers’ compensation insurance

Worker’s compensation coverage may be required for household employers in your state. If so, each family must purchase a policy. Workers’ comp will help cover a portion of your nanny’s medical bills and lost wages if they get hurt or sick while on the job. If you’re caught without the required coverage, fines can easily reach into the tens of thousands of dollars.

7. Communicate with your nanny share family on a consistent basis

Set aside a regular time to talk with your nanny share family about any concerns, issues with the nanny, and possible changes that could impact the arrangement. Problems with the nanny should be discussed between the families first so you can come to an agreement. That response would then be shared together with the nanny. This helps eliminate any confusion and keeps a clear channel of communication. There are some other tips for communicating with your nanny that will help create a healthy work environment and a happy and engaged employee.

Who are baby sitters and how much do they earn

Considering that baby sitters in America receive very moderate money, this type of service is extremely common in the USA.

Usually, nannies are invited through specialized agencies that offer several candidates to choose from. First of all, those who want to guard the children while their parents are “making money” will be asked for at least two recommendations from their previous job. “If we are talking about a novice baby sitter who has no experience with a child, he will have to provide cover letters from his school teacher or even parents. can both look after a child during sleep and play with him while awake, and teach children to read and walk on playgrounds, ”the American Sittercity agency explained to RG. In almost every case, Americans who have decided to “let in” a virtual stranger into their family and entrust their children to him, conduct a thorough check of the newly-minted candidate: they call the previous job and ask about the adequacy of the baby sitter, and then be sure to conduct an interview with him live.

It is not uncommon in the United States for a hired baby sitter to not only feed and change the baby’s diapers, but also to clean the house, as well as general care of the employer’s household.

Salary directly depends on their age and work experience. For a young man or girl between the ages of 18 and 23 and with only one year of childcare experience, the salary will be in the range of $8-$10 an hour. An experienced nanny in adulthood and with good references can claim 13-15 dollars an hour.

However, private traders in America seriously compete with agencies and often bring down prices for this type of service. So, on the popular classifieds site Craigslist, visiting women from India and Mexico offer their babysitting services in the US capital for about five dollars an hour. True, in this case, it will be difficult to check the communication skills with the child, including because of the unimportant spoken English of this kind of nannies.

Alexander Gasyuk

Germany

Illegals will be blacklisted

Once a baby died in Bavaria. Not from illness or accident. He was accidentally a little shocked by the so-called “day mother”, in which he was under supervision. A woman with experience and special education, who had her own children, appeared before the court and was sentenced to seven years in prison.

Such cases are an absolute rarity. And yet, when the irreparable happened in Bavaria, a law was already being prepared at the federal level to regulate childcare at home. It entered into force in 2006 as a law to expand day care and childcare. Since then, the state has assumed responsibility for such services. All nannies who take care of children for more than 50 hours a month for more than three months must obtain official permission. Without it, such work is considered illegal and prosecuted by law.

According to the Federal Statistical Office, out of almost five million children under seven years old in Germany, just over 80,000 were given to private care in 2009, of which more than 60,000 were children under three years old. The total number of toddlers in Germany is a little over two million one hundred thousand. But only a little more than a third of them are provided with places in a nursery, which is why the state supports an alternative private child care program.

Babysitters must feed, play, potty train, wash diapers, walk and read books. In total, there are about forty thousand officially certified nannies in Germany, two percent of them are mustachioed!

The number of nannies in Germany has doubled since the introduction of the law to increase childcare opportunities for working parents. It became more profitable for them to work legally. Permission for state-funded day care can only be obtained from the Youth Welfare Office in the area where you live. Parents are required to provide certificates from the place of work or study, as well as a certificate of income. On this basis, the share of their personal surcharge will be calculated. Parents pay money not to a nanny or a kindergarten, but transfer it to the account of the department. In turn, the nanny or kindergarten receives their fees or monthly payment from his account, which means from the local budget.

Illegal nannies run the risk of losing their possible income forever – regardless of whether it is the main one or just extra money. If their activities without a state license become known, they will immediately fall into the “black list”.

All nannies must either prove their professional suitability by presenting a certificate of specialized education, or take compulsory state courses. The latter include legal education, first aid, the basics of pedagogy and child care. Only about five thousand German nannies do not yet have qualifications and vocational education.

Mostly children come to nannies at home. Therefore, mothers with their own babies often take on such work. And it always pays off. If four or five children come to the nanny, her monthly earnings before taxes can reach up to three and a half thousand euros. After all, three or four euros are paid per hour for a child.

Meanwhile

All contracts are formalized at the Youth Office. Each nanny must obtain a certificate of permission to engage in such activities. Parents, of course, have the right to take a nanny through an agency. In this case, it will either be as a baby-sitter – for example, to sit with a child when mom and dad are enjoying the opera. Such activities should not exceed 14 hours per week. Reputable agencies also require a certificate of professional suitability from nannies. Pay per hour is usually seven to eight euros. Naturally, parents who want to save money can take any student on an ad in a newspaper, but this is already at their own peril and risk, and the Germans do not like to risk their children.

Anna Rose

United Kingdom

Princess Diana also started in kindergarten

13 years ago, Britain experienced a grandiose “Nunningate” in its scandalousness. A young citizen of this country, 19-year-old school graduate Louise Woodward at that time, went to work as a nanny in America. An English lady happily settled into a respectable family in Massachusetts, who took her in as their own, and then rocked their eight-month-old child … to death.

This is how the American court originally decided, whose sessions were broadcast from evening to evening for several weeks by leading British and American television channels. The heart-rending story drew record audiences on both sides of the Atlantic. The British nanny was sentenced to 15 years in prison, but after an appeal and retrial, the term was reduced to a year and then Miss Woodward was sent home.

Whether Louise really killed the child with cruel treatment, or, out of inexperience, treated him so awkwardly that the baby, falling from the nanny’s hands, developed cracks in the skull – so it remained completely unknown. But from this terrible story, which made a universal noise, both parents and nanny agencies made a categorical conclusion: do not allow the devil knows who to children and check candidates for baby sitters with special care.

Because of this, in addition to the traditional agencies supplying nannies, allied services have appeared on Albion to check their professional suitability and reliability. So, for example, if British parents hire a nanny not through an agency, but privately, then a special service called Nannytax will help them verify the authenticity of the recommendations and characteristics provided by her from previous employers. The services of this British company will cost only 58 pounds 75 pence, while the entire procedure will be carried out online, without much hassle for the customer.

The laws of the United Kingdom do not require special registration of nannies through any government agency. The only thing an applicant for a baby sitter position is required to do is provide information about herself to the Criminal Registry Bureau in order to receive a certificate of the absence of this very criminal record. British parents are strongly advised to hire nannies only through agencies that are authorized to request all necessary information from this agency.

Any kind of hiring of a baby sitter – privately or through an agency – is regulated by law in Britain. The law obliges parents who hire a nanny to draw up a special written contract with her. It should indicate the duties of the nanny, her hours of work and salary. When issuing a salary, the employer is obliged to provide the nanny with a receipt indicating the amount paid, noting all possible deductions from earnings. The minimum salary for a nanny hired by a family without the right to live has been set in Britain since October 1, 2010 in the amount of 5 pounds 93 pence an hour. The employer is also required to grant the nanny four weeks of annual leave.

It is curious that even girls from respectable English families do not consider it shameful to earn extra money as a nanny. And even to say that, from this position, working in a kindergarten, the legendary Princess Diana began her journey into adulthood – at that time the young lady Spencer …

Olga Dmitrieva

9012 – How much do I get for baby sitter? – asked Elisabeth, a student of one of the Parisian universities. – An average of eight euros per hour. In the morning I take five-year-old Jeanne to school. Then I go to lectures. I pick up the girl at 16.30. Then, until the arrival of her parents, and they both work, I study with her until half past six. That’s three hours a day.

And so four days a week. The circle goes 384 euros per month, or even more. After all, sometimes they ask me to stay with Zhanna one of the weekends. In this case, the hourly rate increases by one and a half times.

Grey-eyed Elisabeth is from Chartres. Dreams of becoming a lawyer. Her parents can not boast of great wealth, but still give her a little money every month. True, they are only enough to pay for a tiny apartment in the north of Paris, which Elizabeth rents for a couple with a friend. So making extra money as a baby sitter is a must for her.

There are tens of thousands of students like Elisabeth in France. Guys, by the way, also a lot. Some earn money for their summer holidays in this way, others for a moped. But almost all of them still “baby-sitter” from time to time and do it with the mediation of specialized agencies.

The director of one of them, Edith Gilbert, told me that her agency “Bambineri” has a very high turnover of personnel, but with each of the employees she necessarily concludes an employment contract, which stipulates both their duties and wages within 8-9 euro per hour. The peculiarity of “Bambineri” is that it accepts orders for looking after children over three years old. And this means that at one time Edith received an “agrement”, that is, a work permit from the city directorate of labor and employment, quite simply. Everything would be much more complicated if she chose crumbs under the age of three as objects of activity.

After all, in this case, a special “agreman kalite” is required, that is, “high-quality”: the staff must be selected qualified – you will not let an ordinary student near the kids. It already needs people with the skills to handle babies, and this is a profession that in France is called “maternal assistant”. She is mainly engaged in women aged 25 to 55 years, among whom, by the way, there are many foreigners. They have the status of employees, which means that the employer is obliged to make contributions to social funds, which subsequently, in particular, entitles them to a pension on an equal basis with all other working French people.

“Mother’s Helpers” work both for agencies and independently. In the first case, agencies are looking for clients for them, which conclude the relevant contracts. At the same time, “assistants” are tested, provide relevant documents. The duties of baby sitters are wide: they feed the children, put them to bed, change diapers … They can provide medical care. Moreover, they regularly improve their own skills, attend special courses. The working week for “mother’s assistants” is usually 40-50 hours a week. The salary is higher than the minimum wage established by law, that is, from 1200 euros and more. Agencies, of course, also do not remain unprofitable. They get 15-20 percent of the amounts received from clients. In addition, just contacting the agency costs parents 200-300 euros. For an additional 50 euros per month, you can also count on the fact that in case of force majeure, someone else will always replace the assistant assigned to the family.

The second option is when the “mother’s assistant” works for himself, that is, acts as an individual entrepreneur. To do this, there is a simplified procedure for obtaining such a status.

It must be said that French families with young children receive considerable assistance from the state. The social security system provides for reimbursement, depending on the income of the family, of one or another part of the amounts spent on the services of both “baby-sitters” and “mother’s assistants”. With an annual income of up to 20 thousand euros per child under the age of three, the state allocates 441 euros for these purposes every month, and 220 euros for children from three to six years old. If the family annual income does not exceed the bar of 44,500 euros, then you can also count on state assistance, but it will be on average one and a half times less. Moreover, 50 percent of the amounts spent on serving children by involved personnel are allowed to be deducted from taxes by the French. This is probably why the birth rate in France has been growing in recent decades.

China

Nurse at home

If you open any newspaper, the last pages are full of advertisements of numerous offices offering babysitting services.

But oddly enough, babysitting services, or as they are called “ai” in China, are most in demand among foreigners living and working in the country. I cannot vouch for the accuracy of sociological evidence, but I dare to assume that nine out of ten foreigners resort to the services of nannies. Most of the ai are “inherited”: someone returns to their homeland and recommends a housewife to their friends, such as Chen, a 55-year-old pensioner who has been housekeeping with foreigners for 15 years. “Usually I have 5-7 clients at the same time, however, this is when I don’t need to look after the children. I come to their house two or three times a week, I do cleaning, sometimes I cook, I do laundry. And if families have a child, in In this case, I refuse all other clients and spend almost all the time in the same family,” Chen told me.

On average, she earns about 4,000 yuan (a little over $600) per month, plus a pension of 2,000 yuan. For the capital’s pensioners, this is very good money, given that the city authorities compensate for medical care, including medicines, discounts on transport and a number of other social benefits.

Wealthy people can afford the maintenance of two au – one is engaged exclusively in housework, and the other – a child. But this is rather an exception to the rule, since most still try to maintain a reasonable balance and not completely shift the upbringing of children onto the shoulders of the nanny.

Ecuadorian women at a great price

Baby-sitter is a profession that is very common in countries with a large number of immigrants. Often people who come to a new country for themselves cannot find a job in their specialty for a long time and, in order to somehow survive, agree to such an occupation. Spain is no exception in this regard.

There is also a demand for nannies. According to statistics, in this country, 33 percent of mothers start working before kindergartens open, and 59 percentpercent – finish after they close. Children need to go somewhere, and baby sitters, who are called “kangaroos” in Spain, are a good option.

Most of the nannies are Hispanic, between 20 and 39 years old. It is believed that the best nurses are immigrants from Ecuador. According to the Spaniards, they are especially kind and easily find a common language with children. Also, students, nurses and specialists in primary education go to nannies. They use this activity as a part-time job.

If the candidate has a work permit in Spain, he can take the resume to a recruitment agency and wait for offers.

Caring for one child costs between 180 and 305 euros, depending on the qualifications and responsibilities of the babysitter.
