About NWC | Nannies Who Care » Nannies Who Care

Nannies Who Care does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, sex (including gender identity, sexual orientation, and pregnancy) national origin, age, disability or genetic information.

As a member of INA (International Nanny Association) & APNA (Association of Premier Nanny Agencies) we take pride in our ability to offer quality in-home childcare. Raising the standards of in-home childcare!

DEBRA ADAMO

Nannies Who Care was founded in 1989 by Debra Adamo. Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, Debra has a Legal Assistant degree and worked in the industry for 8 years prior to starting Nannies Who Care. Debra has three grown, independent and successful children. She has lived in Tampa Bay for over 35 years. When her children were babies, she saw the need of families to find quality and affordable childcare. Debra is also a Guardian Ad Litem, a volunteer position where she advocates for the safety and welfare of abused or foster care children. She attends court to ensure that these children are placed in a safe and loving home. Debra likes to live by the motto: Treat others as you would like to be treated.

Nannies Who Care has been serving all of Tampa Bay, Sarasota, & Orlando areas since 1989! Because of our longevity in this area as well as our impeccable reputation, most of our clients and nannies come from referrals. We personally interview all local nannies and are proud to say that after so many years, many of our client’s children are grown and now having their own children and using our service. Additionally, some of our nannies are having their own children who are becoming our nannies too! New generations are trusting and using Nannies Who Care! This is a comfort factor that only a well-established agency can provide.

We spend much of our time educating families and nannies about the difference between a full-service agency and finding a nanny from an online list. Unfortunately, these lists give parents a false sense of security. Online applicants are never met by anyone and their identification is not checked. These lists provide minimal background checks that are also done online if at all. At Nannies Who Care we personally interview all candidates face-to-face (via zoom), and identification is properly checked. Verification of legal status is done to be sure they are eligible to work in this country, thorough background screening (which includes runners going out to individual courthouses to check records on any place a person has lived worked or gone to school!) and the nanny is sent out for CPR & First Aid certification.

We provide a personalized service that is second to none by thoroughly assessing the family’s needs before referring any candidates to them. This is a huge time saver for the family so they do not have to weed through hundreds of unqualified applicants that you may find on a “do it yourself” site.

Nannies Who Care maintains high standards of integrity in our nannies and other household help in order to provide “peace of mind” for families and encourage the children in their care to grow in a loving, friendly, and safe environment. Nannies Who Care also provides “Supervised Visitation” for those children to be able to visit with their parent at a location other than a center. Supervisors are permitted to go on outings to “fun” venues on their visits.

Nannies Who Care has many references that we can provide from families that currently use us. Feel free to check us out on Facebook, Linked In, Yelp and Twitter for testimonials. We are referred out by many of the local hospitals, pediatricians, and major hotels as the premier nanny service for their guests!

Call us anytime and we will be happy to personally answer any questions you may have.

Features of a nanny caring for two children

Looking after and caring for two children is a difficult job that requires double responsibility and increased care.

Many mothers have already appreciated the convenience of hiring a nanny to take care of their child – you can work and relax calmly, knowing that a real professional is looking after the child. What if you need a nanny for two children? Is it realistic to find such a specialist who can cope with a double load without lowering the level and quality of the services offered? Of course, this is difficult, but it is possible, especially when real professionals are engaged in the search. Based on the results of qualification tests and psychological tests, a specialized agency for the selection of domestic staff can accurately select from the total number of applicants those candidates who can perfectly cope with such a difficult job as a nanny for two children.

Peculiarities of babysitting two children

What is the difference between such a nanny and her colleagues working with one child? The duties of a nanny to two children are similar to those of any nanny. This is a complete care for children, ensuring their safety, age-related development and compliance with the daily routine. But the most important thing is that it must be a highly qualified professional, because a double burden falls on his shoulders for all the main duties of a nanny. Plus increased responsibility and care. It is difficult to keep track of even one child during a walk and at home, and even two should have an eye and an eye. In addition, a professional nanny will always be able to find the right approach to any of the children, as well as make each child’s leisure as interesting as possible.

With a constant play and study companion, children will never be bored, and with the right motivation and the combination of play and learning, great results can be achieved. Of course, this applies to children with a small difference in age, who have similar interests and the same daily routine. If one of the wards is an infant, then everything is much more complicated. In this case, a nanny should be hired to help the mother or relieve her of household duties, because a small child requires constant attention, and differences in caring for children of different ages (nutrition, daily routine) will not allow the nanny to fully fulfill her duties towards both children. In addition, if for a child over one year old a nanny-teacher with knowledge of the latest development methods and the ability to fully reveal the potential of the baby is preferable, then it is advisable to entrust the baby to a specialist with a medical education and skills in handling babies. That is, even before hiring a nanny for two children, it is advisable for parents to decide which of the children will be in the full care of the nanny, and with which she will assist the mother in her free time from her main duties.

Looking for a nanny for two children

So, high professionalism and responsibility are the criteria that characterize a nanny for two children. And the search for a specialist of this level should be approached very seriously. You should be extremely careful about offers in a newspaper or on the Internet, and even more so, do not look for a nanny for your children using ads pasted on poles and bus stops. In this case, there is too much risk of entrusting children to the wrong people. In addition, even the presence of a certain education and long experience in the work book does not always guarantee that this person will be able to fully care for two children, will not be confused in an unforeseen situation and quickly make the right decision, and also has great patience and will not lose his composure from tricks and whims of little tomboys.

Exactly for this purpose, in addition to the usual checks, applicants undergo psychological testing in the recruiting agency, the results of which make it possible to judge the psychophysiological and personal characteristics, knowledge, skills and abilities of the future nanny. This means that a person who does not reach the level of a nanny for two children will never be on the list that will be offered to you at the agency.

A subsequent personal meeting and an interview with the applicant will allow you to make a choice. But the final point will be put by your children, by whose behavior you will be able to understand how right your choice was in the first week of babysitting. After all, it is important that, along with double responsibility and the highest professionalism, the nanny has kindness and great love for children, and then your kids will be surrounded by care and warmth.

“I realized that this is my place.” How babysitters work for orphans in hospitals in St. Petersburg

A.

The world outside the window of Ward No. 2 looks monochrome: black ribbon of the road, black trees, gray high-rise buildings to the horizon, white earth. Petersburg in the morning thaw, sculpting wet snow. The black-and-white picture is cut right in the middle by a red tram that has left the road. The walls of the chamber are green. Three-month-old A. looks over the shoulder of the nanny Irina Vinogradova and looks at the pictures in surprise. The family from the cartoon “Prostokvashino” – Uncle Fyodor in the arms of mom and dad, brownie Kuzya, hedgehog, Santa Claus and Snow Maiden.

A. has round peach-shaped cheeks, long eyelashes and a funny tuft of fluffy hair on his head. She entered the department only three days ago and constantly “demands for hands.”

— Home girl, you can see right away! Irina says. – Well-groomed, accustomed to hands. A home child is hands, hands, hands.

A. came to the Children’s City Hospital No. 1 of St. Petersburg only three days ago – after her mother committed suicide.

In the column “father” A. has a dash. Now guardianship is taking care of the girl’s case, looking for her relatives in Voronezh, where the child was born and where her mother lived. If the relatives are not found or refuse to take her away, A. will go to the orphanage.

“I don’t want to give it to the system,” the nanny says, putting A. to bed. – I don’t know what caused it. Maybe mom had postpartum depression. Couldn’t cope with the difficulties, was left alone. Or maybe other reasons.

Irina Vinogradova, 45, has perfect styling of short red hair, neat manicure, ironed medical uniform – blue trousers and a blouse with “Petersburg parents” embroidery on the back. The regional public movement “Petersburg Parents” is a charitable organization that runs the “Nursing Care” project and pays for the work of nannies for orphans undergoing treatment in city hospitals.

© Pyotr Kovalev/TASS

How long A. will stay in Children’s hospital No. 1 is still unknown: perhaps several days, or possibly weeks. It all depends on the decision of relatives and guardianship, the speed of paperwork, identified diseases: while the fate of the girl is being decided, she is being examined in a hospital. This is done with all children removed from the family for one reason or another. All this time A. will be looked after by nannies from “Petersburg parents”.

Boys

In addition to A., there are three more children in the ward. Everyone except her is disabled. Boy S. is quite tiny – he seems to weigh no more than a one-year-old child, although he is three and a half. Hands and feet are dried twigs. A large head, a high forehead, a blue convex vein beats on the temple under the transparent skin. He is a convict from birth. S. reaches out with her hand to a thread with rattles stretched over the bed, strikes them and smiles, looking past us. He has been in the hospital for two months now.

13-year-old M. on the bed in the corner has a severe damage to the nervous system, he cannot walk, talk, eat ordinary food. Under his arms and legs, on the sides there is a soft nest – pads of various shapes, they help to give the body a correct and comfortable position and reduce the likelihood of pressure sores.

Next to his bed is a mobile rack with perfusors, medical devices that automatically control the flow of drugs and nutritional mixture into the body. Tubes of droppers and probes stretch from the counter to M. – thinner, thicker. Monitors, flashing numbers, measured sounds of working equipment. Once. Once. Once. Once. Noisy and hoarse breathing. A few days ago, M. underwent an operation on the gastrointestinal tract.

– He was tormented by constant vomiting, so they put in a gastrostomy (an artificial hole connecting the stomach and the anterior abdominal wall; a gastronomic tube is inserted into the hole, through which food and drugs are injected directly into the stomach cavity, bypassing the oral cavity and esophagus – TASS note), but now the process is getting better, it was closed. We feed by drip enteral nutrition through a tube,” says Irina.

M. – ward of the DDI, orphanage boarding school. In the hospital, he, according to Irina, “is a regular client, then he comes, then he leaves, then he lies in our ward, then he is in intensive care.” He’s on regular painkillers and anticonvulsants. We go to the head of his bed, and M. looks up at us with big brown eyes.

M. has a mother, she sometimes comes and brings him parcels. Irina knows nothing more about M.’s fate. Each visit here, the child’s condition is either better or worse, but in general, “the dynamics are negative, he here, in fact, receives hospice care.” Irina says that such children often leave in the hospital.

Baby E wakes up in a crib by the window. He is ten months old, he was also put in for gastrointestinal treatment while he is being fed through a gastrostomy. Irina does not know the exact detailed diagnoses: this is not necessary for her work and is not even welcome. Enough information: is it possible to pick up, how to properly care for, how often and what to feed, what symptoms to immediately pay attention to and call a doctor.

E. also comes to the hospital often and for a long time, this time he has been in bed since summer. E. has a mother, but she recently gave birth to her second child and now cannot come often. “I hope mom will come for him,” Irina says reservedly.

The boy is trying to roll over on his stomach, but so far he has not succeeded. He carefully looks at Irina, follows her movements with his eyes. Wrinkles the forehead, the face becomes tense and suffering. He cries plaintively, intermittently, breaking into a cough. The nanny bends over him, takes him in her arms. E. immediately subsides.

Feeding, keeping the child dry and warm – all that parents usually do – this is my job. But we are still trying to communicate more with children, to take babies in our arms more often, because touch, tactile contact are very important both for the psyche and for the development of the baby. So they feel protected, less worried.

Even children with severe organic lesions of the brain and nervous system react to tactile sensations, to touch. They like it when you stroke your hand and massage your fingers.”

Irina has ward No. 2 for five and older children from the next door. Today is a quiet shift, so there is an opportunity to play with the kids. there is no time to sit down at the working day.

— We work with my shift in 2/2 mode, and usually they fly by just in an instant. Then the day comes to your senses.

Irina puts a colored toy butterfly with rustling wings into E.’s pen. Toy with the logo of a premium Israeli brand of children’s products. There are a lot of expensive things in the ward. In the corner there is a stroller on inflated wheels – to walk with children along the corridors or take them outside when it’s warm. There are good baby cosmetics on the changing table, and several packs of Japanese diapers on the shelf.

– This is bought by sponsors, philanthropists. Cosmetics, diapers, books, toys. We also try to make the atmosphere at home, not official.

A doctor comes into the ward and starts to work on M. — he treats the wound after the operation on the stomach. He says that a physiotherapist will come now – the boy is prescribed procedures for recovery.

A. bursts into loud and demanding crying — Irina puts E. into bed, prepares formula for the girl, picks her up and gives her a bottle. A. greedily bites his gums into the nipple. After a few minutes, she closes her eyes blissfully and freezes. Irina gently shakes her. If there is a very stressful shift, it is impossible to feed the children in your arms – then they are laid on their side, given a bottle and put a towel under it so that they do not roll away. If A. ends up in an orphanage, most likely, she will always be fed this way until she can eat from a spoon. Irina knows this from her own experience.

Irina

“I came to work with children in a kindergarten at the age of 18. I just received a diploma as a confectioner and first got a job in the kitchen. But I have to cook a lot for the garden, I realized that I could not cope with these boilers. I asked to join the group nanny. Then she went to study at the pedagogical one, “Irina Vinogradova smiles.

She says that for many years she worked in public and private kindergartens, in families, and then she left for an orphanage: “I decided to devote myself to this.” Four years of life with children of different ages, from four to 18. First as a nanny, then as an educator: “I had to deal with both small and adult uncles so taller than me. many no longer even want to go to a foster family. They are on their own.”

From the orphanage, Irina went to a baby house, where orphans live from birth to four years old: “I realized that I feel more comfortable with babies.” But she worked for quite a bit, less than a year.

“I broke an unspoken rule. I was immediately told there – don’t get used to it, it’s better not to pick it up. And there was a boy, I realized that no one needed him. He was very sick, with cerebral palsy and a bunch of other diagnoses, constantly crying, he was lying in a distant bed. He was nine or ten months old, up to a year. the most unloved in the group. And I got so attached to him. I tried to pay more attention to him. And then a very bad story happened. I noticed that this child was bullied. What can you do to such a baby, he lies and screams? .. The nurse is just put a gag in her mouth. An ordinary diaper, can you imagine? But he can’t see, he’s blind, he screams even harder. She could just kill him like that … “0009

Irina Vinogradova says that she did not expect such determination from herself, but immediately began to remember what had happened. I wrote a complaint to the Commissioner for Children’s Rights of St. Petersburg. In the baby’s house, checks and trials went on, the nurse was fired. But colleagues did not support Irina.

“They later judged me that I snitched on my own people. You shouldn’t have done it, as they thought, you had to turn a blind eye to it, not take dirty linen out of the hut. And, naturally, they asked me to leave. The kid stayed there.

Irina quit her job. While still working in an orphanage, she read in the newspaper about the project of the Petersburg Parents social movement, which provided nannies for refuseniks in city hospitals, but then there were no vacancies for her.

Babysitters for refuseniks

The project “Sister Care” of the public regional movement “Petersburg Parents” has existed since 2008. Initially, nannies for orphans who were treated in hospitals in St. Petersburg were volunteers of the movement – caring mothers who helped in their free time. However, the frequent change of people negatively affected the psychological state of children, and since 2009year, thanks to donations, it became possible to hire professional nannies on a permanent basis.

The nannies of the project not only care for, wash, feed patients who are not near their parents or a close adult, but also brighten up their leisure time, play and read with them. They work so that orphans or children who find themselves in a difficult life situation are less afraid, sad and feel less lonely. Petersburg Parents pays for the work of permanent day posts and round-the-clock nannies for children in serious condition in six city hospitals, as well as training and advanced training for project employees. More than 1,000 wards help nannies a year. The project is in dire need of support. The assistance of volunteers and car volunteers is also needed.

“I decided to get here. Purposefully, consciously. I was waiting for a place in this hospital, it’s convenient for me, because I live nearby. They explained to me that the children here are very difficult, but I also had bedridden children in the house little ones, I had experience, I knew what awaited me.”

In 2013, Irina was hired. For almost ten years there was a crisis period when the nanny quit – for health reasons. She hasn’t been in the hospital for three months. The place was empty: no one was taken. “The hospital staff is interested in people coming who do not need to be trained for a long time.

The nannies of the Nursing Care project are mostly women who have already gone through school, raised their own children or worked with special children.

“I don’t have my own. Maybe that’s why I devoted my whole life to strangers. As a result, I came to this ward anyway. And now I don’t want to run somewhere, I don’t want to change anything. another profession, but all the same, in one way or another, I returned to the children. Although physically I am exhausting myself here. I’ll heal myself and go back to work. I already realized that this is my place, “says the nanny.

When asked what is the most difficult thing in work, he answers: “If we talk about the body, it’s a bad back.” Every day, children have to be lifted, shifted, carried in their arms many times. Psychologically, work has become easier over the years.

Children get used to me faster than I get used to them. I am probably held by the understanding that I still cannot become a mother to a child. When I got a job here, many said: “Why do you need this?” But then who will be with them? They say you get hard with time, but I don’t think you can get hard working with children.

Children with difficult fates in the hospital – on the stream. Hundreds of criminal, tragic, scary stories with a variety of plots that have one thing in common: the child is always the victim in them.

“Of course, there were also unusual cases. For example, once a child was brought in. He was picked up on the street at night. The parents were celebrating something the day before, and he quietly went for a walk on the street and got lost. Guardianship then checked this family. But if there is nothing terrible, the family is not asocial, then they give it a chance.

Irina says that the trend is sad – most often the children from her ward are sent to orphanages.

“I went through this system from the inside, I saw how it works. The baby house in which I worked is no longer there.
