“Only a favorite thing can reveal the full potential of a person”

There are many tea consumers in Russia – 98% of the population. But there are far fewer connoisseurs. But their number is growing every year, and fans of tea culture are getting younger, which is facilitated by the growing interest in a healthy lifestyle, yoga and self-development. Moychai.ru is one of the beneficiaries of this trend. Seven years ago it was one tea club in Moscow, now there are 20 shop-clubs in different cities. Moreover, the company develops without advertising and without loans. Sergey Shevelev, Pavel Safroshkin and Alexey Belyakov, the owners of Moychai.ru, talk about how to create a successful business doing business for the soul.

The three of you have completely different backgrounds. How did you come to tea and to the general business?

Sergey Shevelev (S. Sh.): I had my own event organization business. Tea was carried away by his wife, at that time the tea master of the Tea-n-Art club Bronislav Vinogrodsky, this is a well-known expert on China, together with Mikhail Baev, he founded the first tea club in Russia back in 1996, which, ironically, we bought out in 2018 -m. Shortly after I realized that tea was my drink, my partner and I opened our own tea shop. And after he left for China, I began to dive deeper into the product myself.

Moychai.ru Press Service

I realized, for example, that it is best to buy tea in China from farmers, and I made my main investment – I started learning Chinese. Now I can find any product in China myself, organize deliveries and so on.

Pavel Safroshkin (P. S.): In 2013, I worked at VKontakte as a development director, before that I founded the Internet agency I-Will.ru (they recently celebrated their eighth anniversary). In addition to Internet technologies, I have always been interested in the market for conscious eating and a healthy lifestyle. Tea then already replaced harmful social rituals in my life, I was a regular at the only Moychai tea shop in Moscow at that time, and there we met Sergei, began to communicate and realized that we had similar values and views. At some point, I got tired of the digital market, and I began to look towards socially useful projects. Somehow it happened by itself that we decided to join forces: I entered the project as a business angel and have been here for six years now.

Alexey Belyakov (A. B.): Sergey and I have known each other for a long time, and we became partners when I realized that I wanted to do what I love. I loved tea, was fond of yoga, lived for four years in Asia. I thought that I could deal with Chinese tea, and helped Sergei with finances. But then I was more fascinated by Russian products: herbs, honey, chocolate, ceramics. So I do my favorite thing only in Russia.

Does the fact that you are interested in different things help or hinder the development of a joint business? What is needed for a harmonious partnership?

PS : Nine out of ten projects are closed in the first year, including due to the fact that partners simply cannot get used to each other. We are lucky: we really have different professional interests, but we have learned to add personal vectors in one direction and get along well under one logo.

N. Sh. : Initially, it is important to distribute shares, roles and define tasks, then there will be harmony. I travel around Asia, I deal in tea and chinaware, Alexey is in charge of herbal preparations and ceramics in Russia, Pavel is in charge of strategy, investments, and business development. The main thing is the desire to understand each other. Tea will always help here: they sat down, talked – and everything becomes clear.

Did you immediately trust each other?

PS: We passed the stage of trust formation quickly, I am not inclined to stagnate at this level. There is a very simple way: you give a person money and watch how he behaves. This allows you to quickly understand who you are dealing with. When the distrust factor disappears, the horizon of joint actions immediately expands.

Moychai.ru Press Service

S. Sh. : By the way, it was very difficult for me when Pavel came to the project. After all, I had my own business. But the desire to keep everything under control and not to share with anyone severely limits development. So a partner who burns just like you, is ready to do a lot of things, is not afraid of mistakes and at the same time learns, only for the benefit of business. Pavel came with investments and a desire to systematize everything. At first I resisted, saying that it was impossible to count everything. Later I realized that the disciplinary factor in the face of a partner motivates me to act more responsibly. By the way, we still live according to the initially created P/L, after six years the deviation is no more than 10%. We no longer attract third-party investments, if necessary, we add from our own. Never go to banks.

Is tea club a promising business?

N.W. : This is a profitable business. But you need to be aware that you are not going into it for quick money, it requires resources. If you want to open a tea club on your own, learn the language, live in China for a while, understand what a real tea party is, then you will have a great business.

PS : Moychai.ru is not just a profitable business for me, this project meets my interests, values and rhythm. Giving money and doing nothing is risky and boring. I am an entrepreneur first and foremost and can’t pass up when something can be improved. Sergei was passionate about his work, but his energy was limited by the organizational and financial framework. Simply crediting him would be a mistake. It is important for me to be a part of the project, to bring to life the entire arsenal of my knowledge and experience from creating an accounting system to building business processes.

A. B. : I originally invested in what I planned to do myself. And he got much better returns than he expected. Dealing with herbs and tea from wild plants, we help the village people who collect these herbs and the people who drink this tea. We are developing an industry that is important for a full, healthy life. In addition to profit, this is a socially responsible business. The scientific component is also interesting: we are actively cooperating with the Moscow University of Food Production, we want to expand the specialty of a tea production technologist, including herbal tea from Russian wild plants.

Moychai.ru Press Service

On the cultural side: we keep people in touch with nature, hold thematic events, etc. There are few countries in the world where there are so many useful wild plants. Herbal preparations and tea from wild plants are much richer in active substances than modern foods. At the same time, we make a unique product, and everything unique and in demand is, by definition, promising.

Moychai.ru can be opened as a franchise. How does this development model work with your reverent attitude towards the culture of the tea business?

NW: Franchising is a viable business model if partners are chosen carefully. We set the bar high: 800 varieties in stock, the ability to store and brew tea, and come up with activities. This is not only a club, but also an event agency, and even a tea fast food. If there is an understanding of tea as a product, or at least a desire to understand it, the club will succeed. We give our brand, our product, our ERP system. We help with all launch issues, even with the search for employees, not to mention training.

But it cannot be said that the secret is only in business processes and our knowledge, a lot depends on the team and the manager. The owner will then need to work hard himself and put his soul into the business, then everything will go fine. Last year, we opened Moychai.ru in Stavropol — the project has successfully implemented all the accumulated experience of our franchises and has already reached self-sufficiency.

Have you had to part with one of the franchisees?

PS: There were, of course, unsuccessful experiments. There are three main reasons for parting: either people did not have any entrepreneurial experience; or there was not enough money for a full-fledged assortment, premises and interiors; or the person did not want to immerse himself in his own business, relying on hired employees. Do you know what is the key difference between a tea club and a restaurant business, for example, where the role of the owner is also important? The tea club, the longer it works, the more energy it accumulates and the more people there are. They do not get tired of it, it does not require rebranding every three years. If you follow all the rules for maintaining the assortment and quality of service, the tea club brings more and more money over time. People who apply for a franchise often do not understand this, counting on an instant result.

I realized that it is best to buy tea in China from farmers, and I made my main investment – I began to learn Chinese. Now I can find any product in China myself, organize deliveries.

What do you talk about with a potential franchisee to understand how the right club he can create in his city?

NW: Since recently, we have been taking the choice of franchisee as seriously as the choice of partners. Key criteria: it must be an experienced businessman with an interest in tea, a desire to make good money and develop this business in his city. Organizational skills, the ability to assemble a team and work in it are very important. Ideally, the owner himself should sit in the club – burn with what he earns.

PS: If earlier we were interested in attracting partners with money to develop our brand, now we are looking for people with successful experience in launching their own projects. In Moscow, we have the only franchise, its owner has been in the construction business for many years. He knows how to build projects, he has the resources for this, he came to us because he wanted to do what he loves. Ideal picture: when a person wants to get pleasure from business, and not just profit.

Moychai.ru press service

In 2017, you announced that Moychai.ru was interested in partners not only in Russia. How is business developing abroad?

S. Sh. : Last year we started testing Moychai.ru development formats in other countries. An online store has opened in Bali, there is a warehouse. There is no outlet as such yet, but we are represented in a large number of cafes – our local partner has organized a mobile tasting center. It was the first, test project. The second, larger one, is being launched in Amsterdam, beloved by tourists, so this is a challenge for us. In Europe, tea clubs can be counted on the fingers, the same in America and Canada, it is interesting to work there too.

Not so long ago you opened a tea bar on the Danilovsky market. Does this mean that there are still new niches for development in Russia?

N. : Yes, we are interested in new niches. When there is a desire to grow, one must inevitably go beyond the boundaries of one’s special world. Everyone drinks tea, Russia is the fourth country in the world in terms of tea consumption. A tea bar is a more mass format than a club, where there are traditions, ceremonies, and depth. In the bar-island on Danilovsky, we get to know a new consumer, we can afford different experiments, such as cocktails, tea ice cream, etc. We create a parallel, autonomous business line, trying to form a mix of concepts that correspond to the idea of tea culture and healthy lifestyle.

Knowing us, in China they can sell goods for several million on credit, money for it can be given at a meeting in a few months without any interest – because suppliers see that we constantly go there, we care and we have long-term relations.

PS: The niche of tea clubs is rather narrow. In order to expand, you need to increase the audience, but we are not trying to take it away from other tea clubs. We are engaged in the development of the entire tea market. Our goal is to educate consumers with higher requirements for the quality of products. We understand that in large cities there are similar projects with “hot” traffic, where people pay a little more for high quality goods. This is a bright trend, and we want to use it. It is very important to choose the right keys for this audience. Now we have launched a pilot project with VkusVill, we will test various formats of cooperation: from tea to go to the development of an exclusive line. We are also suppliers of tea and tableware to many large chain establishments. It is possible to expand the audience by window presentation. The more people you show your product to, the more people come to you.

Are you all still actively involved in the business yourself?

S.Sh.: And you can’t do without it. We like to play for a long time and do projects thoroughly. For example, we started doing mate and for the second year we have been going to Argentina, to Paraguay – we are studying all the production facilities, building relationships, and negotiating. As a result, we created our own brand of mate from the best farm raw materials, which no one has done before in Russia.

Moychai.ru Press Service

Did you adopt the strategy from the Chinese?

NL: You could say that. When you know the language, in China you quickly understand what “guangxi” is – a concept that denotes personal relationships. It is important and necessary to visit partners, it is especially appreciated and opens up completely new horizons. You become not just a client, but a professional friend. They are ready to change business processes for you, give you exclusive positions, produce a special product, for example, processed in a special way. Interaction with the supplier turns into creativity. This is the most enjoyable part of the process.

PS : In Russia, the planning horizon is 3-5 years, in Europe it is a decade, and the Chinese think in generations, think about their grandchildren, and try to be friends with families of business partners. This is unusual for us, but we still absorb this concept in our own way. We try to plan at least 20-30 years ahead, which allows us to do something good for a long time.

We had a telling story about how long-term relationships are valued in China. We do not deal in flavored teas, because in terms of production, they are usually old teas that are no longer sold on the domestic market. In such cases, enterprising businessmen spray tea with various flavors, then to sell it to the unlucky laowai (ignoramus, a common derogatory term for foreigners – ed.). The most popular of these teas is milk oolong. I don’t know how he gained such wild popularity among our compatriots, but there were many requests from clients and it was useless to explain – he was required. In order not to make a deal with our conscience, we asked our Chinese supplier Te Guan Yin to process fresh tea with the best and safest flavoring. At first, he was even offended: probably, you think my tea is of insufficient quality? Sergey explained in Chinese that we believe him, and his tea is good, it’s just that we want to make milk oolong from this fresh tasty tea. Half an hour later, the supplier somehow resigned himself to our desire. The next day we were already in another province, 10 hours away by train. On the way to breakfast, we were called by the receptionist. What was my surprise – 10 neatly packaged milk oolong samples were waiting for us, made according to our request. Unthinkable for Russia, the speed of production.

Knowing us, in China they can sell goods worth several million on credit, money for it can be given at a meeting in a few months without any interest – because suppliers see that we constantly go there, we care and we have long-term relations.

The tea club seems like a business that becomes a way of life. Can a hired manager with the same zeal build a trusting relationship with a supplier or just as carefully delve into the specifics of the collection and processing of wild plants?

NL: Our business is based on purchasing and manufacturing. Continuous search for suppliers on farms, plants and factories, testing raw materials… For some, all this may seem like torture, but for me it is an exciting game and adventure. If business has managed to reach this level of the game, it becomes a way of life.

Moychai.ru Press Service

AB: A business that has a component of self-realization is doomed to become a way of life. In any business, success is achieved primarily by people who love their occupation, here even talent fades into the background. If a person found his business and began to realize himself in it, he will be completely captured by him, and it doesn’t matter if he is a co-owner or an employee.

What advice would you give to entrepreneurs who already have business experience and now would like to switch to a business project for the soul?

PS: The three of us came to tea having experience in other areas, and our choice was conscious. Now I understand that no matter what I do, one way or another I will achieve some success. But only a favorite thing can truly reveal the full potential of a person. When there is a desire for change, the main thing is not to do anything abruptly. It is worth carefully analyzing all your motives, resources and abilities, charting a path, and then gradually begin to bring your favorite business to life. Then everything will happen by itself. Otherwise, there are high risks of premature disappointment in the chosen occupation, loss of resources, breaking from the loss of habitual income, etc.

In a business for the soul, when the owners are passionate about their business, should the team be selected somehow differently?

N.Sh.: Employees are a mirror of the current state of the leader, I don’t know any special technologies. If you want to improve something, start with yourself, and the team will adjust.

Sergey Shevelev is the creator and owner of the MyTea.ru project.

They did it!

Sergey Shevelev is one of the founders of Chinese tea culture in Russia, creator and owner of the MyTea.ru project.

In the 1990s, Russia began to receive large volumes of imported tea, including Chinese tea. The quality of this product, in most cases, left much to be desired. When purchasing goods, entrepreneurs used the basic principle: “buy cheaper – sell more expensive.” Consequently, few people thought about the level of production. However, in the midst of all this chaos, there were true connoisseurs of Chinese tea culture. So Chinese tea came to our homeland and began to spread systematically.

Sergei started his business organizing events while his wife worked as a tea master at the Tea-n-Art club of the famous sinologist Bronislav Vinogrodsky. After some time, Shevelev was imbued with Chinese culture, began to visit various tea houses, tried different varieties and in 2010 decided to open his own space in order to start his own business and do it better than others. So the first tea shop of Shevelev on Baumanskaya began its work.

An important criterion in the choice of raw materials is the taste itself: Sergey personally travels to the plantation provinces of China and tastes tea before buying it in bulk. This guarantees the quality of any tea sold in the shop. Also, one of the principles of doing business has become personal contact with suppliers. The entrepreneur had to learn Chinese in order to communicate with the manufacturer without intermediaries. This is one of the features of market relations with China. Firstly, the natives are biased towards Europeans and may try to deceive them. It is the knowledge of the native language that is the key to a good location of the manufacturer and a well-structured dialogue. The wholesale buyer is obliged to know it and understand the subject of trade. Secondly, long-term prospects are very important for the Chinese. A common language brings together: the client is already becoming a friend who comes regularly – this forms an individual approach and trusting relationship.

The MyTea project is not only about a drink, but also about education in social networks. So, Sergey created a thematic group on VKontakte and popularized the Chinese tea culture in general, and his shop in particular. Shevelev’s YouTube channel has almost 90,000 subscribers. In his blog, the businessman shares stories, master classes, tastings in different cities of Russia, trips to China, travels. Tea houses are in particular demand as venues for themed evenings. Thus, various events are often held in the clubs “MyTea”: musical evenings, seminars and lectures.

Today “MyChai” is the largest wholesaler of high-quality Chinese tea in Moscow. The company has 2 tea spaces and about a hundred representatives in Moscow, as well as several clubs in St. Petersburg, Ufa, Lipetsk and other Russian cities. The store is also open for delivery.

In any specialized tea shop in Moscow, there is a 30-40% chance that there will be tea purchased by Shevelev’s company. Also, recently, intensive work has been carried out on a foreign franchise. So, an online store and a warehouse in Bali have already been opened, a club has been launched in Amsterdam; in the near future we plan to open outlets in Europe, America and Canada. Since 2013, MyTea.ru has also been producing its high-quality branded tea in China for sale in its own stores.

Unfortunately, almost all tea sold in our country’s supermarkets is of catastrophically poor quality. Drinking low-quality tea has become a habit of Russian citizens, which has lowered its status as a drink in general. However, there are people who challenge the culture of mass consumption. One of these is Sergey Shevelev with his company. Testing, sampling, purchasing goods – this is not a complete list of the duties of the owner of the company.
