Introduction

Some of them considered it obscene to dip a butter knife into lemon cream. How horrified they would be if they saw my scalpel disappear into the bloody tissue!

Something cold and wet seeped through my soles. I didn’t notice the pool of blood I was standing in. I quickly brought a bag of sawdust and scattered it on the floor; they looked like a thin layer of yellow-brown snow. I’ll have to get rid of my shoes before I get home – there’s no need to scare my newly arrived maid more than usual when I come home from a day’s work covered in blood. nine0005

My uncle snapped his fingers, bringing me back to the task at hand.

After I disinfected the bone saw that my uncle used to cut open the skull and put it back on the shelf, the autopsy was completed. Uncle Jonathan sewed the body like a skilled tailor, only he worked with flesh instead of cloth. I watched as the V-shaped incision he made turned from a dark red line to a black seam.

Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Thomas hastily sketching the corpse in its final form. His pencil scurried across the paper, now faster, then slower. I had to reluctantly admit that his drawing was really very good. The details he picked up will help us investigate when the body is taken back to the morgue. nine0005

– Do you recognize the deceased, Audrey Rose?

My attention shifted abruptly to my uncle. He took off his apron and looked straight into my eyes. I bit my lip, peering into the mangled face of the woman. There was something familiar about him, but I still didn’t recognize her. I slowly shook my head in surrender.

– She served in your house. Very short.

Guilt sank its claws into me – I still didn’t recognize this poor woman. What a disgrace – she did not pay attention to the person from her own house. Mary Ann deserved better treatment from me and from the world. I felt very guilty. Uncle turned to the sink. nine0005

– You must have been ill at the time.

Thomas immediately became alert, peering at me for signs of the remnants of the disease. Like he doesn’t care. He must have been worried that this might pose some potential danger to himself. My face was on fire, and I busied myself with the samples.

– What did each of you learn from our little experience today? Uncle Jonathan interrupted my thoughts, lathering his hands and forearms with a bar of carbolic soap. Are there any interesting hypotheses? nine0005

I jumped at the opportunity to speak my mind now that we are not surrounded by students. In part, I rejoiced at the opportunity to present my theories in the presence of Thomas. I wanted him to see that he wasn’t the only one with interesting thoughts.

“Whoever is responsible for this murder must have received some medical education,” I said. “Perhaps even he studied pathological anatomy. Or at least he studied surgery.

Uncle nodded:

– Good. Keep talking. nine0005

Inspired by my uncle’s approval, I walked around the corpse.

“Perhaps she was grabbed by the face, then struck, from which she lost consciousness,” I remembered the cuts and those places on the body where there were wounds. “Also, it may have been moved to another location. Our killer needed time to carry out his operation without interference.

When I imagined how our former maid was beaten, then dragged to some abandoned basement or some other damp, dark place, goosebumps ran all over my body, like graveyard worms. Even though I didn’t remember her, the very idea that she lived, breathed, worked in my house made me feel in some way responsible for her. I wanted to help her now, after death, since I could not help her in life. Maybe she would still be alive and have a decent job if I had the courage to resist my father’s chronic need to change servants every few weeks. nine0005

My lowered hands clenched into fists. I refused, utterly refused to let the woman continue to be treated so cruelly. I will do everything in my power to solve this murder for Miss Nichols. And for all the other disenfranchised girls and women ignored by society.

Mom would have done the same.

All other thoughts were driven out of my head by the terrible reality we faced.

– He must have slit her throat in a place where a lot of blood would not attract attention. Perhaps he took her to the slaughterhouse and did it there. nine0005

Thomas snorted next to the corpse. I whirled around to give him a deservedly angry glare, while untying the apron straps with all the anger I could muster, and then tossing the apron into the laundry bin. I felt that my face was reddening again, but I hoped that he would not understand the true reason for this blush.

– What’s so funny, mister?

He made a serious face and stood up.

“Mr. Thomas Creswell, at your service, Miss Wadsworth.” Bending slightly in a playful bow, he drew himself up to his full height and smiled. “I find it funny because it’s too much work for our killer. Dragging her to the slaughterhouse after he took care to knock her out with a single blow…” He clicked his tongue. – It seems completely redundant. nine0005

– I’m sorry, but you don’t…

Thomas closed the journal he was sketching in and walked around the corpse, interrupting me rudely:

– Especially if he could easily dismember her by the river and all the evidence would be washed away, even him you wouldn’t have to get your hands dirty. Not to mention the mud,” he pointed to her soiled boots, “that had dried on her heels.

I wrinkled my nose, as if the air smelled of something worse than rotting flesh. I was very disappointed that I had missed the connection between the mud on her boots and the muddy riverbanks. What annoyed me even more was that Thomas hadn’t missed her. nine0005

“It hasn’t rained for almost a week,” he continued, “and there are many dark corners near the Thames from which Leather Apron can choose.
