GAITHERSBURG, MD — If you haven’t already, don’t waste time making reservations if you plan to celebrate Mom with brunch at her favorite Gaithersburg-area restaurant on Mother’s Day, which falls on Sunday, May 14, this year.
Restaurants around Gaithersburg could use the business as they continue to face economic headwinds that began with the COVID-19 pandemic. Some restaurants may be closed so their employees can support their own mothers or be pampered by their children, but here are some options:

- Applebee’s is adding a $10 bonus card to the purchase of a $50 gift card for Mother’s Day and other special occasions, including graduations and Father’s Day.
- Bob Evans is offering both eat-in and delivery options for brunch and dinner.
- Bonefish Grill is offering a limited-time spring menu with seasonal favorites. Be aware that some are available for dine-in only, while other orders can be picked up at the curb.
- The Capital Grille opens early for Mother’s Day brunch, with seating available starting at 10 a.
m. Be sure to make a reservation. The restaurant included a “polite notice” on its reservations page stating that “to better deliver on our promise of a refined atmosphere, proper dress is required.” That excludes gym attire, sweatpants, tank tops, hats, clothing with offensive language or images, and exposed undergarments. - Fogo de Chão Brazilian steakhouse is offering a ready-to-reheat Mother’s Day Celebration Package that feeds six and features a choice of fire-roasted meats, sides and dessert. Meals should be ordered at least 24 hours in advance and are available for pickup or delivery all day May 10-13, and by 10:30 a.m. on May 14.
- Morton’s, The Steakhouse is accepting reservations for Mother’s Day, and has concocted a special cocktail just for Mom.
- Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse is opening early both May 13-14 for brunch and also has a prix fixe menu for dinner.
- Seasons 52 Fresh Grill | Wine Bar is offering Mother’s Day brunch from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and is making its dinner menu available all day. It is also offering a Mother’s Day Green Box that serves six, but must be preordered.

Mother’s Day is an international holiday, although in many countries it is celebrated at different times. In Russia, for example, mothers are congratulated on the last Sunday of November. Some former Soviet republics celebrate this holiday in spring, others in early autumn. So, according to unofficial data, Mother’s Day in the United States is the fifth most popular holiday after Christmas, Thanksgiving, Easter and Valentine’s Day.
It has been celebrated in America for more than a century, and every year is just as solemn!
History of the origin of the holiday
Of course, the origins of honoring mothers at the beginning of spring has a very ancient origin, possibly associated with the veneration of the Greek goddess Rhea, the mother of the gods. In all cultures, one way or another, there were features of such a celebration, and they coincided with the first real warmth that gives life to nature. Mother’s Sunday was celebrated in England, and later, together with the settlers, migrated to the United States, and as a national holiday, mothers day was approved on 1914 year. According to official data, this is the merit of Anna Jarvis, a girl whose mother died quite early, and the second anniversary of her death fell on the second Sunday of May. Anna fought for the recognition of Mother’s Day at the national level for seven years and achieved her goal. Now on the same day mothers are congratulated in Belgium.

In 2019, Mother’s Day in the United States is celebrated on May 12th.
Features of the celebration
The scarlet carnation is considered to be the unspoken symbol of the holiday – often its image can be seen on thematic postcards, certificates and advertising posters.
In all countries, such a day is aimed at expressing gratitude and love, but there are some features of the celebration in different parts of the world. For example, in Canada it is customary to serve breakfast in bed, to save mom from any household chores. In Austria, on this day, it is customary to pamper mothers with culinary delights, traditionally there should be a chic cake, unusual dishes in a restaurant. Brazilians gather in a family circle, often there are several children in the family, so they prepare a surprise together – a gift or a performance. Mother’s Day traditions in the USA are modest and unpretentious – Americans congratulate mothers and pregnant women, give them small nice gifts and spend most of their free time with them.
In most countries it is considered bad manners to give household appliances and kitchen utensils as a sign of the need for housework. Acceptable gifts are jewelry, flowers, sweets, interesting interior items, certificates for goods and services.
