It seems that gluing plastic models is fun for children. But for adults, it can be even more fun, especially if you love technology or history. Modeling allows you to immerse yourself in an era you are interested in or better understand how airplanes, ships or cars are arranged. It is also a good reason to get together and do something with your own hands. nine0003

I’ll tell you what it takes to glue your first model, how much money and time it takes.

We got this Nissan Skyline GT-R. We assembled it on weekdays in the evenings and on weekends, it took a week. And these are other representatives of our plastic fleet. There are models that can move: by themselves or by remote control. But most often they are static, their main task is to repeat the original to the smallest detail, therefore such modeling is also called bench modeling. nine0003

The model is the most accurate copy of a real car, ship, tank or other equipment: a ship can have decks, masts and sails worked out in detail, while a car can have an engine and interior. Most often, such models do not take up much space: the usual size of a car model is 1:24, that is, it is 24 times smaller than a real car.

A self-assembled model is not only part of a collection or piece of furniture, but also a separate story. Therefore, modelers often strive to make not just some kind of aircraft or tank, but a specific historical specimen with all its features: characteristic colors, insignia, and even dirt and damage on the hull. nine0003

Sometimes the matter is not limited to one model: an entire scene from combat life is recreated around it. For example, modellers take a photo chronicle of the war years and reproduce a tank battle in the Central Russian steppe based on it: in addition to equipment and soldiers, they make houses, trees, grass, lampposts, rails, and so on. Such compositions are called dioramas.

Modelers are fond of different directions and types of equipment: some recreate tanks from the Great Patriotic War, others assemble destroyers and battleships from the Battle of Tsushima, others glue a small copy of the Star Destroyer from the Star Wars universe. My friend and I enjoy collecting Japanese cars the most. We are from Siberia, in our childhood and youth, mostly right-hand drive Japanese women drove through the streets: they were the most reliable and high-quality cars. Therefore, the theme of the eastern automotive industry is very close to us. nine0003

We started modeling because we wanted to do something with our own hands and get a tangible result from our labors. Building models is ideal for this: it requires a lot of manual work, which requires precision and accuracy. During the assembly process, you are constantly learning something new and expanding your technical knowledge, and as a result you get a beautiful model that pleases the eye and which you can show off to your friends.

Models almost completely copy real cars. They have an engine, gearbox, suspension, anti-roll bar and exhaust system. During the assembly process, I began to better understand how the car works. Sometimes we are drawn to the military theme. It took us 20 days to assemble this model of the Russian Grad self-propelled multiple launch rocket system. The assembly kit cost 1300 R, we spent the same amount on glue and paints

Where to buy models

In most cases, people assemble models from a ready-made set. The main component of such kits is sprues: these are molds on which individual parts molded from plastic are attached. There are also detailed instructions for assembly and painting in the box. It describes all the main stages and shows the connection diagram of the individual parts.

Japanese manufacturers’ kits have instructions in English and Japanese. But even if you don’t own them, you won’t have any problems with assembling the model: everything is clearly shown on the pictures, like on the instructions for furniture from Ikea. nine0003 This is how the set with the car model looks like. Large parts are cast separately, while small ones are on sprues, so they need to be carefully cut out from there. This is how the assembly instructions look like. It also contains a brief history of the creation and production of a particular car model, as well as its main technical characteristics. Many factors can influence the complexity: the quality of the plastic, the number of parts, how detailed the chassis, interior and body of the car are recreated, whether it has body kits and spoilers, what number of colors should be used when painting. nine0003

The main manufacturers of prefabricated car models are the Japanese firms Tamiya, Aoshima, Hasegawa and Fujimi. There is also the Italian company Italeri and the German Revell. Usually, each of them specializes in a specific topic: it is unlikely that the car model you need will be immediately available from all manufacturers.

For example, Tamiya produces high-quality and inexpensive kits, it has a large assortment of sports cars, motorcycles and various military equipment: tanks, armored personnel carriers. Aoshima offers many models of conventional cars, predominantly made in Japan, and its prices are higher than Tamiya, but the quality of the models is slightly lower. Hasegawa and Fujimi are average with good quality, but a small assortment. Italeri and Revell have good quality and lots of European and American trucks as well as American classics like Dodge and Ford. nine0003

In my experience, Tamiya sets are the easiest to assemble: they have high-quality castings and the parts fit perfectly. Modelers joke that if you shake the box, the models of this company will assemble by themselves.

For beginners, it is better to choose inexpensive models with a small number of parts in order to try their hand, learn basic assembly and painting skills, and in general to understand if they are interested in such an activity. If you also want to assemble cars, then for the first time I advise you to choose a model with a simple geometry, without a body kit and additional external parts. In this case, the body will be easy to paint and polish. Of the manufacturers, it is better to choose Tamiya or Aoshima: their kits have high-quality plastic molding – the elements will fit well and assembly will require less effort and time. nine0003

Sets are sold in art supply stores and children’s toy stores. Usually the choice there is not very rich. Much more options are presented in specialized online stores: “I am a modeler”, Arma-models, ScaleCar and JDM Hobby. The latter has a whole community of modelers on Vkontakte: there you can see other people’s models, ask questions about assembly and painting, show the result of your work and get advice or criticism.

A kit may be inexpensive, but that doesn’t mean it’s bad. First of all, you need to pay attention to the manufacturer and the reviews of those who have already assembled this model. Source: Arma-models This set contains 796 parts made of various materials: plastic, metal, rubber, textile. And this model is much larger than the usual ones – its scale is 1:8. It costs almost 40,000 R. Source: Arma-models

How the assembly process works

At first glance, gluing the model is quite simple: you take the next part and glue it to others, methodically following the instructions. But any self-respecting modeler will tell you that this is not enough. If you want the model to look great and be close to the original, you will have to file almost every detail, remove flaws and minor defects, and then fit it to other parts. Before painting, several layers of primer must be applied to the model, and then varnished, polished and waxed – in a word, everything is like with real cars. nine0003

Separation of parts from sprues. All parts in the set are on sprues – plates on which they are cast in molds. After separation of the part, small plastic growths may remain on it at the points of contact with the sprue frame, as well as flash and other casting defects.

These imperfections must be removed with a knife, sandpaper or file. If this is not done, the defects will be conspicuous on the finished model or will not allow the individual parts to be properly connected at all. For cleaning, we usually use a nail file and sandpaper. nine0003

Gluing. After stripping the parts, they can be glued together. But before that, it’s better to try them on first. It happens that due to defects in the production process, parts of the model do not perfectly fit together: for example, the bumper, body kit and headlights form clearly visible gaps after being installed on the body. In such situations, it is necessary to precisely fit these parts to each other with the help of a suitable tool.

For gluing, it is enough to connect the parts and drop a little special glue for modeling on them. It does not need to be held for a long time: usually the glue hardens in less than a minute. nine0003

Priming and painting. To make the model look neat, it must be prepared for painting. First of all, it is worth treating the surfaces with a file and sandpaper to remove the gloss from the plastic, otherwise the primer may not adhere well to it and run off, and the sharp corners at the joints of the parts after gluing will be striking. This is a long and tedious job, but the final result largely depends on it.

“Painting of the prefabricated model from A to Z” — a guide in the JDM Hobby group on Vkontakte

Then the model needs to be primed: this helps to remove all roughness and unevenness from the surface. If you immediately apply paint, it will not hide these shortcomings, but will show even more, besides, without a primer, paint streaks form on the plastic. It looks sloppy and takes time to fix. The primer will ensure that the paint adheres to the surface of the model, just like when painting a real car.

Primer is usually a neutral gray or white color and when applied completely hides the color of the plastic of which the model is made. This is important, because often car models are made of dark plastic – in order to end up with a light car, you need to apply 5-6 layers of paint. When using a primer, only 2-3 layers will be enough. nine0003 When assembling a model, you don’t have to follow the instructions exactly. For example, on this Toyota Chaiser, we ourselves made a radiator grille and an air intake in a nylon mesh bumper. And the headlights were made of self-adhesive foil instead of just being painted silver. It turned out more interesting than the version from the box During the assembly process, all parts need to be painted separately: if you immediately assemble the model, you won’t be able to paint the interior

What tools you need

The kit usually contains only plastic parts – tools, glue and paints, as a rule, you need buy separately. The minimum kit that any beginner modeler should have includes the following items:

  1. Special model knife – needed for cleaning seams and details. Instead, a regular stationery knife for cutting paper may be suitable.
  2. Side Cutters – Useful for separating parts from sprues.
  3. Tweezers – handy for joining or painting small parts that are difficult to hold due to their size.
  4. File – it is needed to clean the contact points of parts and sprues, as well as to remove large defects.
  5. Sandpaper – used for finer detailing and sanding paint and varnish. nine0176

There are many kits with tools for modelers on the Internet. We ordered ours for 1880 R. But you can still look for them in ordinary stores that sell goods for needlework or hobbies.

1880 Р

we spent on a set with tools for modelers

Separately, we bought a set of sandpaper – skins, it cost us another 184 Р. , with its help, modellers can perform finer work. For example, sandpaper marked 2000 is used for grinding and eliminating minor imperfections, and sandpaper marked from 400 to 800 is suitable for leveling larger irregularities. nine0003 Our set of tools, we ordered it in the online store for 1880 R. On hobbyplus.ru it costs a little cheaper

tweezers

With small details like rear-view mirrors, you can only work with To collect all engine and interior parts, it is better to use

Small parts like rear-view mirrors can only be handled with tweezers To assemble all engine and interior parts, it is better to use tweezers too

Adhesive will be needed to join the parts. The usual “Moment” or superglue from the hardware store will do, but it’s better not to risk it and choose a special one for modeling. The “moment” is too malleable and for a high-quality connection it requires a strong pressing of the parts to each other, which is not always possible when assembling many small and fragile elements. And superglue corrodes plastic too much and seizes instantly, so there is no time left to correct mistakes if the parts are connected unevenly. nine0003

Modeling Adhesive slightly softens plastic parts at the application points and causes them to fuse with each other. At the same time, it does not seize too quickly, so there is always time to correct the position of the parts.

Several types of glue can be used to assemble one model: universal for basic elements and superfluid for connecting complex and small parts. Superfluid glue can penetrate into the joint between folded parts, quickly hardens and leaves no noticeable marks. nine0003

The cost of glue depends on the manufacturer: the glue of the Russian companies Zvezda and ZIPMaket costs from 40 R per 15 ml. This volume is enough for gluing 5-7 models. The glue of the German company Revell or the Japanese Tamiya will cost 200-400 R. We use Tamiya glue because we like that it sets quickly and holds the parts together well. We buy it in the online store “I am a modeler” at 212 R for 40 ml.

212 R

Tamiya glue is used, with which we connect parts

Accessories. When modelers become more experienced, they also buy other useful tools to do their work at a high level: we have clamps, a scriber and masking tape. With the help of clamps, it is possible to fix parts when gluing at several points of contact at the same time. A scriber is needed for “embroidering” doors, a hood and a bumper – they are, as it were, cut out on the body. If this is not done, then after painting the model will look like a solid glossy ball. Masking tape is used to create masks when painting a model in different colors. nine0003

Clamps start from R45 each, scribers from R100, tape from R48. All of these tools can be bought in the same specialty stores that sell the models.

We glued and fixed the body kit. Clamps help to fix the glued parts evenly, but you can do without them. This is the name of a special apparatus that sprays paint in a thin layer. This is much more convenient than working with an ordinary brush: it applies a fairly large layer of paint, it is almost impossible to spread it evenly over the case without streaks. As a result, the model will look sloppy. nine0003

Experienced modellers are trying to get their own airbrush as soon as possible. It is much more convenient with it: you can adjust the spraying of paint at the desired pressure, choose a suitable spray jet, choose a shade of paint by changing its concentration or mixing colors. But the main thing is that the airbrush allows you to apply paint in a uniform thin layer, which reduces its consumption.

Airbrush costs from 800 R to 22 000 R. It will need a compressor, hose, filter and nozzles of different diameters: they will have to spend another 1800 R to 11 000 R. So that the airbrush does not clog and does not mix other shades of paint, after each use, it must be cleaned with a special liquid: it costs from 500 R per bottle. Also, airbrush paint must be diluted with a solvent: it will cost 150 R per 10 ml. nine0003

We haven’t got our own airbrush yet: we don’t want to buy a cheap Chinese one, but we don’t dare to buy a good Japanese one yet.

Set for beginner modellers. It includes Chinese Jas airbrush, compressor and hose. Source: aeroguns.ru This is a professional set with an airbrush from the Japanese company Iwata. There is a powerful compressor, a set of tools for cutting stencils, surface treatment, cutting wood and plastic, tools for cleaning and disassembling the airbrush. Source: aeroguns.ru

Paints. Acrylic paints are most often bought for painting models: glossy or matte. They are easy and safe to use, fit well and dry quickly. Enamel paints are less convenient to use: they need to be diluted with white spirit, they dry slowly and smell strongly.

But enamel paint has its own plus: until it is completely dry, you can fix flaws with a solvent. Such paints are chosen by modellers, for whom it is important to transfer the shade exactly in accordance with the colors of military equipment. nine0003

The assembly instructions for the model usually contain recommended paint numbers from specific manufacturers, but it is not necessary to follow these instructions. Acrylic and enamel paints for modeling cost about the same: from 70 R for a 10 ml jar, you can buy them in specialized stores for modellers. Consumption depends on the method of application: if you paint with a brush, which I do not recommend, then the jar is enough for one model; The airbrush applies paint more evenly, so with it the same volume is enough for 2-3 models. nine0003

There are also spray paints in spray cans, we bought just such. They allow you not to use an airbrush, but to achieve a similar effect. Aerosol paints cost from 500 R to 1700 R per 100 ml. But they have a very high consumption: a can is enough to paint 1-2 models.

We buy aerosol paint from the Japanese company Tamiya for painting the body, bottom and interior at a price of 515 R per can. We paint small details like headlights, turn signals and brake discs with a brush, for this we take acrylic paints of the same company at 152 R per jar. nine0003

515 Р

is a can of Tamiya paint, which we use to paint the body, bottom and interior of models

Lacquer. After the paint has dried, the model is varnished. It protects it from dust, dirt and paint fading in the sun, and also adds gloss and allows you to polish the model to a shine. Varnish for application with an airbrush costs from 110 R per 10 ml, the consumption depends on how many layers of varnish you cover the model: usually one jar is enough for 2-4 copies. nine0003 A set of our paints. Large ones are aerosol, and small ones are “under the brush”. Varnish also comes in an aerosol version. We buy one 100 ml can from Tamiya for 515 R – this is not an advertisement, it’s just that the Japanese have really good value for money

Polish is used at the final stage and usually only by those modelers who collect replica cars to give their creations shine real cars.

It’s the same principle as with a real car: polish adds extra shine and color depth, and also protects the paint from microcracks. It is recommended to use three types of polish in stages: for coarse, fine and final polishing. One tube will cost 300-700 R, it will be enough for 10-12 models. nine0003

Some modellers additionally cover models with wax. It adds gloss, protects against fingerprints and makes the model less likely to attract dust. A tube of wax costs 870 R per 30 ml – this is enough for 10-12 copies.

Bonus: how to make money on modeling

For us, modeling is a way to have fun and enjoy the process, so we didn’t even try to make money on it. If you have such experience, please share in the comments.

I know that someone is trying to sell their models at Avito or the Masters Fair, but their price is usually low: from 1000 R. Many modellers sell their creations not for money, but to make room in the collection for a new instance: for them, the main thing is the build process itself. nine0003 The author of the ad offers for 3000 R and more professionally to assemble a model for you Connoisseurs and collectors can pay well for a truly high-quality assembled model. On the same sites, experienced modelers offer to assemble complex models to order for private collectors. Some cooperate with specialized studios: for example, D63 creates non-standard models to order. The tanks featured on their website start at £112.00

If you get really good at modeling, this could be the start of a new career path. nine0003
