“Children”
nine0000 REX SINKFIELD
Rex Sinquefield was born September 7, 1944 in St. Louis, Missouri, USA. The childhood of the future millionaire was very difficult – he grew up in an orphanage, the St. Vincent Orphanage in St. Louis. However, Rex studied hard and graduated from St. Louis University with a degree in economics, and then received a master’s degree in business (MBA) from the University of Chicago.
“The clue is twenty minutes from his town house. This is St. Vincent’s Orphanage, where the mother sent little Rex after the death of his father and where he spent most of his childhood. Strict German nannies ran there. The children slept in large bedrooms, had to wash the dishes themselves, clean up and scrub the floors with steel brushes. He feels a bizarre nostalgia for those times: “It was the army that taught me self-discipline.” nine0003
He did well in school, scoring 100% in many subjects, although he still snidely marks only 97% for spelling when he got downgraded for using the British spelling instead of American. Rex then went to the University of Chicago, where he studied “rational economics” and the theory that individual investors cannot outwit the market. It was then that he got the idea to start index funds, which made him fabulously rich” (D. Edmonds). nine0003
Rex made a lot of money by opening the first ever index fund in 1973. With his partner David Booth, Sinquefield founded the investment firm Dimensional Fund Advisors (DFA) in 1981, which today controls over $300 billion in assets worldwide. Becoming one of the richest people in the United States, Rex was able to popularize his favorite game, chess, in the country.
In 2008, Sinquefield founded a chess club and training center in St. Louis. In September 2011, he financed the move to St. Louis of the World Chess Hall of Fame. Billionaire since 2009sponsors the U.S. Junior and Adult Championships and sends the U.S. Olympic team to World Championships and the Olympics. Thanks to the efforts of Sinquefield, Fabiano Caruana and Wesley So joined the Stars and Stripes team.
Rex Sinquefield hosts a super tournament every year in St. Louis that bears his name. Multiple winner of the Gold Koltanowski Award, an award of the US Chess Federation, awarded for a great contribution to the development of chess in the country. Sinquefield’s name as a chess figure is immortalized in the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame (2011). nine0003
Plays chess with grandmaster Jennifer Shahade. The son of top US chess philanthropist Randy also plays his father’s favorite game.
Rex Sinquefield’s charity work is not limited to chess alone. He provides money for scientific research, is the head of the board of trustees of the St. Vincent Home for Children in St. Louis, in which he himself grew up. The philanthropist’s wife Jeanne supports various programs for young musicians. Rex Sinquefield is the author of a famous book on the stock market. nine0003
Rex supported Garry Kasparov in the 2014 FIDE presidential election. An ardent Republican, Sinquefield sponsors the “great old party” in Missouri. In his home state, the billionaire is always at the center of controversy and controversy, he is a shadowy giant of local politics, nicknamed the Tyrannosaurus Rex. He promotes a rather radical idea of the free market and advocates the abolition of income taxes in the state.
“Much of the above has to do with the personality of one man, Rex Sinquefield. He is already over seventy, gray hair … He is sitting in the auditorium, watching the US Chess Championship. He’s dressed in shorts, a baseball cap, and refreshes his concentration by drinking glass after glass of Diet Coke. Sinquefield is a wealthy man and he loves chess.
