Another Great U.C. University Campus

Wonderful location near the ocean, with the S.B. airport next door. Variety of buildings with some ’70 styles but still a beautiful campus with great views. Not too far from highway 101.

The campus is on the beach with most of the dorms with ocean views! I liked what the admission officer and the tour guide said that students are balanced here, with rigorous academics but are generally happy.

Beautiful Location and Campus

Traveling alone

As a UCSB graduate, I always enjoy going back and driving and walking through the campus. It is just as beautiful as when I was a student there. I would recommend to anyone in the area a walk around the campus, especially near the lagoon.

Must See Campus for Tourists and Campus Aficionados

For Two

The UCSB Campus and surrounding community of Isla Vista is a must see. The campus itself is a mix of 70’s style architecture that is somewhat interesting. The star, of course, is the amazing proximity to the ocean. Stroll the lagoon and extended sections of beach access and soak up the essence of the central coast. Isla Vista is also worth seeing. It is a lively center of life for UCSB’s students. While not attractive in a aesthetic sense, you can feel the vibrancy of the place. Plus there is more beach to be enjoyed there as well. Bottom line, don’t miss this amazing campus, home to one of the best universities in the country. Wear comfortable shoes as there is a ton of walking.

Boasts the longest coastline of any Campus!

This is one of the 10 campuses of the University of California, UCB has lively undergraduate and a well known graduate programs that include all the major fields. The location is spectacular, with lagoon and surf to the south, views to the mountains on the north, it is an amazing setting. The views can be most appreciated at the library 8th floor tower. Pleanty of walks along the bluff overlooking the shore where landscape restoration has progressed to eliminate the invasive ice plant from South Africa.

Top Notch School

With friends

If there were a combined rating of top academic and top party schools, UCSB would literally be #1; which makes for the most well-rounded people. The “hidden gem” of this institution though is its pep band that plays at basketball games, soccer matches, and other various events.

Family fun

How can you go wrong going to IFUCSB as a student…. are fortunately enough to be admitted. Alums all say it was a fabulous experience….happiness despite having to study hard…no longer a big party school.

Arts and Lectures Series at UCSB the Best

Traveling alone

There are lots of reasons to go to UCSB. Their alumni house is superb–especially at night looking at the lights. But for a non UCSB person, their Arts and Lectures series is a huge benefit to the larger community. From top speakers to all forms of serious music, this series is one of the best of any university I know.

Every time I come back here, I realize how lucky I was to have chosen this school for my academic enrichment. The campus was beautiful back then, and now it is even nicer than before. Some of the 1969’s and 1970’s style buildings are present, but there are so many new buildings here that are amazing. The new library is so awesome. The engineering buildings are great too. And the location of the school is perfect. How could anyone choose anything else? The only drawback is the old pub has been replaced by The Hub. The Hub is kind of like a mall food court. Used to be such a special place to have office hours with your professors over a pint of beer. Corporate America has won over once again

Dynamite Views Don’t Mean Poor Academic Rating

If you’re looking at this campus with a view to submitting an application, don’t be fooled by the views or the party-hardy segment of the student body. The sciences, engineering & music departments are formidable, and so are some others. Check out your specific interest. Serious research in a number of fields have made this campus well-known and garnered a number of honors up to and including the Nobel Prize. The number of applications allows this university to be chosen. Incoming freshmen who don’t straighten out by 3rd quarter aren’t here the following year.

That said, it is a beautiful setting and offers many outdoor athletic opportunities. Department faculty run in packs along the cliffs at lunch, there are always walkers on the beach at dawn, and everyone enjoys the competitive sports teams, first-class gyms and swimming facilities. Students are wise to squeeze as many lectures, plays, musical events, dramatic offerings and other cultural offerings as possible while it’s easy to see world-class talent on the cheap.

If you are just driving thorough, follow the road and eventually you’ll end up on the other side of campus. If you’re walking, pick up a map. In-building has made the campus a maze.

Blague skeleton skiing until now standing on the edge of the moorland. Ivy spreads over the chipped stone, hiding the ugly marks of fire, and obscures the outlines of empty rectangles that were once windows and doors.

In other times and in other places, nothing would have marked this place, except for a lush growth of wild grass covering everything like a veil. The villagers would have taken away the stones to mend the walls and build strong stables for the cattle. In the North Riding, stones are rarely found so carefully worked, but not a single stone is touched in the walls of Greygallows. Birds and wild animals: foxes, badgers – find shelter in the ruins. Their voices and the whistle of the wind are all the sounds that break the silence. Villagers bypass this place. They call him cursed, and what right have I to say that they are wrong?

I have never liked books that start with “I was born.” But now, it seems, I will not escape this literary sin. Some excuse serves me that this phrase is not the first in the book. It is worth noting that I was born in 1826, seven years after Her Majesty’s birth and eleven years before her ascension to the English throne. In the year I was born, almost half of all the lands of the kingdom were in the possession of five hundred landlords. Naturally, the right to participate in elections belonged exclusively to landowners. It was not until a quarter of a century after 1826 that divorce became possible without special permission from Parliament, sixteen years later English law exempted small children from working in the mines, and half a century later a law was passed on the property of married women.

It would seem that these global problems should not be related to the life of a noble and rich young woman. However, my strange fate was the result of the laws and social conditions of this time.

I was happily unaware of all these ominous omens when I lay with a pacifier in my cradle or expressed my protest with baby cries and later, when I sat on a pony for the first time under the loving, exacting supervision of my father. All I remember about him is that he was a tall man with a noble posture, adorned with magnificent sideburns. Mom is also very vaguely remembered – only the sweet aroma of perfume and the rustle of silk skirts. Both died in an accident when I was seven years old. As I was told, I was thrown out of the carriage. I do not remember at all either the misfortune or the days that followed it. When I came back to life after weeks of illness, I found the familiar world completely changed. My house, my rooms, my fat old nurse had been replaced by a cold cramped room that I had to share with three more girls, and instead of mother and father there was now Miss Plum. Even my body has changed. One leg was injured in the fall, and although only a scar remained, I could not walk without limping.

The first weeks at Miss Plum’s school in Canterbury were a nightmare for me. Recovering with difficulty, yearning, deprived of everything, I resisted all attempts to comfort me. And yet later I fell in love with both the school and its mistress. For that time it was a good school; perhaps it gave little knowledge, but it was a calm, pleasant place, which was not often found. As for Miss Plum…

She is still in my mind’s eye: a blossoming, bun-like shorty. Her round, ruddy face was always damp with sweat, for the good old lady loved greasy food and blazing fires. Heavy lush clothes made her even fatter. She panted like a fat old spaniel; she could not spy on the girls, for we knew of her approach from a few yards away from the hoarse breathing and the rustle of her incredible petticoats.

She was never strict. On the contrary, she was too sensitive and sentimental to be a good discipline, and she spoiled me terribly. I was a pretty girl with chestnut curls and brown eyes, unusually pale to the point of transparency and thin. Miss Plum dressed me up like a big Japanese doll that I looked like. There was enough money for clothes, and for any delicacies, whatever I wished. I took it all for gifts; It wasn’t until a few years later that I realized that I was Miss Plum’s favorite because of my position as a wealthy heiress. I did not leave school even for the holidays, because I was absolutely alone. Miss Plum took pity on me for my orphanhood and physical weakness, and instead of forcing me to study and work, spoiled me by warming me by the fire and trying to whet my appetite with her favorite fatty foods.

Naturally, with such treatment, I soon turned into a spoiled narcissistic girl. The other students’ hatred of me was equal in strength to Miss Plum’s adoration. I did not notice their relationship until the day of my tenth, when one of the invited girls showed it to me convincingly: I teased her in my usual way, when suddenly, in annoyance, she threw a cake with jam in my face with all her might.

Lost in surprise, I began to lick the jam off my splattered face, and suddenly Miss Plum’s expression awakened my hitherto dormant sense of humor. I laughed and the guests followed suit. Since then, the girls have been nicer to me, especially after I managed to persuade Miss Plum to cancel Margaret’s punishment.

At the age of sixteen, I became the oldest student in the entire school. My girlfriends left school to take their place in the family circle or enter into a marriage that was prepared for them.

In May of that year, Mr. Beam made his first appearance. He was my father’s attorney and one of my guardians (my aunt was the other). Miss Plum often mentioned his name, as it was through him that my tuition and maintenance was paid, but before that he did not honor me with his attention, and our first meeting was something frightening for me. He was a tall old man, flawless as a wax figure; every gray hair lay in place, every fold of the old-fashioned suit looked like it had been glued on. He was one of those people who cannot be imagined as children. If he ever had emotions, they died and were buried many years ago.

A little later, when I got to know him better, I realized that under his stiffness there was a confusion in front of me, like a majestic mastiff in front of a kitten or a butterfly – something small, insignificant and hopelessly frivolous. But he was aware of his duty: for an hour he sat in Miss Plum’s shabby, overheated drawing room, examining me with the professional captiousness of a lawyer. Apparently, he was pleased with my success, although he did not say anything about it. A few weeks later a letter arrived from my aunt announcing her desire to take me out of school as soon as my education was completed.

After nine years of comfort and love, I had to leave school with regret and leave Miss Plum. I’m ashamed to admit it, but there were no regrets. Sixteen years is a selfish age, and I have grown out of my nest. A basket that is comfortable for a kitten becomes cramped for an adult cat. A year before my sixteenth birthday, I felt a restless languor in body and mind.

Still, my feelings were not unambiguous. My aunt, who was my guardian and the only surviving relative, was almost a stranger to me. During the first years of training, she visited me twice. Her visits caused great excitement at the school, for she was especially titled. My memories of these visits were not very pleasant. Her visits were mercifully short, for Lady Russell, as a socialite and the widow of a wealthy landowner, had better things to do than look after her clumsy little niece. Her gilded carriage will roll up in a ringing and roar, a footman with thick calves pulled into white stockings will jump off the back to open the door and help the hostess out. She looked like her carriage, just as gilded and ringing. She filled Miss Plum’s little drawing room with her.
