Mesquita or Córdoba Cathedral Mosque

Mosque–Cathedral of Córdoba (Córdoba, Spain)
Córdoba, Spain in the Andalusian city of Cordoba. This is one of the most outstanding architectural monuments Umayyad dynasty . In the Middle Ages, Mezquita was the second largest mosque in the world.
Mesquita is famous for its arcade with more than a thousand columns made of jasper, onyx, marble and granite. Double arches help support high ceilings. The gilded mihrab of Mezquita is a masterpiece of architectural art. The central dome is decorated with blue tiles in the shape of stars.
The construction of the Mezquita dates back approximately to 600 and was built as a Visigothic church of Vincent of Saragossa. Later it became a mosque, but the original building has not survived to this day: in 711 it was destroyed.
Emir Abd ar-Rahman I wished to build a temple (786-788) similar to the mosque in Damascus. Subsequently, the mosque underwent numerous changes: Abd ar-Rahman III built a new minaret (later the minaret was converted into a tower on which the Archangel Raphael, the patron saint of Cordoba, rises). Al-Hakam II in 961 increased the area of the building and enriched the mihrab. The last of the reconstructions were carried out by Al-Mansur Ibn Abi Aamir in 987. By the end of construction work, Mesquita was decorated with 1293 columns, 1445 lamps and 280 chandeliers.
The architecture of the building has a Spanish-Roman influence. Some of the work was done by Byzantine masters. The influence of Christian culture is also felt in the cruciform design of the ensemble itself, created by the mihrab.
There are several versions explaining the incorrect orientation of the mosque. Some scientists suggest that mihrab is oriented to the south because the structure of the mosque was borrowed from the more ancient structures of the Romans and Visigoths. Others argue that the mihrab is oriented towards the capital of the Umayyad empire, Damascus.
After the Spanish Reconquista, the mosque was converted into a church (1523 – 1560), and some interior details, such as columns and arches, were stylistically replaced. Craftsmen and architects continued to add something to the existing structure of the building until the end of the 18th century. Now it is the Cathedral of Cordoba (catedral de Córdoba). Its uniqueness is manifested in the fact that it is simultaneously considered a shrine of various cultures, the famous Mesquite mosque and the main church of the dioceses.

Alcazar of the Christian Kings of Cordoba
Alcazar of the Christian Kings is the most important example of the development of Cordoba architecture, keeping traces of ancient Roman, Visigothic and Arab culture. This fortress of the ancient Palace of the Caliphate of Cordoba was a favorite residence of the rulers of Cordoba.
The splendor, beauty and unique appearance of its patio does not leave indifferent anyone who comes to admire this architectural monument. The Alcazar has two patios, one of which is a stunning piece of Mudéjar style that boggles the imagination of visitors.
Fernandina Churches
A complex of buildings erected by the order of Fernando III Saint after the reconquest of the city in 1236, many of which, made in the Romanesque style with elements of Gothic and Mudéjar, were built on the basis of mosques.
Medina Asaara
“Shining City”, built by the first caliph of Cordoba Abd Ar-Rahman III in the northwest of the city as a new center of government of the Caliphate of Cordoba and the permanent residence of the caliph. Despite the fact that there is an opinion that the city was built by the caliph for his beloved wife al-Zahra (Asaara), in fact, the main reasons for its construction were political and ideological.
Mesquita – Cordoba Cathedral Mosque
Mesquita – Cordoba Cathedral Mosque is one of the most important architectural monuments of the city, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984, is the most remarkable example of the Umayyad style in Spain. Several styles harmoniously coexist in the architecture of the building: Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque styles.
At the beginning of its existence, back in the days of the Visigoths, the building was used as the Basilica of St. Vincent and was revered by both Muslims and Christians, until Adb ar-Rahman I decided to destroy it and build a mosque in its place, which has survived to this day some traces of an old building.
There are two separate areas in the mosque: a patio, or courtyard with a covered gallery, where there is also a minaret, and a prayer hall.
Viana Palace
This beautiful building, located in Don Gomez Square, has twelve wonderful patios and a stunning garden, and the palace houses numerous, diverse collections: paintings, porcelain, mosaics, carpets, tiles, firearms, etc. Of particular importance are the collection of embossed leather goods and the large library.
Roman Bridge and Calahorra Tower
Along with the Mezquita and the buildings adjacent to it, these structures are the most beautiful symbols of the city: they are especially beautiful at dusk and in the moonlight. The main building was built in the Middle Ages and has been rebuilt several times since then, the last changes were made in 1876.
In the southern part of the bridge rises the tower of Calahorra, declared a historical and architectural monument. Built on the orders of Enrique II of Castile, the tower occupies a strategic position at the entrance to the city and therefore played a major role in the military history of Córdoba. It currently houses the Museum of Three Cultures.
Synagogue
The Jewish Temple is located in the Jewish quarter of the city, is the only synagogue in Andalusia and one of the few that have survived to this day in all of Spain. Declared a historical monument in 1885, it was used as a place of worship until the expulsion of the Jews in 1492, and then at various times it housed a hospital, San Crispin church and a kindergarten.
Roman Temple
Located next to the City Hall of Córdoba, the structure was used as a temple for the Roman Empire and was part of the Provincial Forum.
