New Year’s list of knights and special awards has been published in Britain. Among others, this time the actor Daniel Craig, who played the role of James Bond in five films, was awarded: he became a holder of the Order of St. Michael and St. George. Although he received the award “for services to the cinema and the theater”, this order is usually awarded for achievements in the field of foreign affairs – which is why agent 007, created by Ian Fleming and repeatedly played by Craig, received the same honor.
In addition, former Labor Prime Minister Tony Blair, who led the British government from 1997 to 2007, received one of the highest honors: he was made a Knight of the Garter. This award has nothing to do with the preferences of the ruling cabinet and is entirely at the discretion of the Queen.
The list of most other recipients, including Craig, is compiled by the current government, and the Queen only approves it.
Sir Tony Blair
Blair’s award means he now has a knighthood and the former premier has already expressed a desire to be called “Sir Tony” rather than “Sir Anthony”.
The rank he received is the most honorable of all available to British civilians. It has been awarded numerous times in the past to former prime ministers, including Margaret Thatcher and John Major, Blair’s predecessor at the head of the British government.

As for acting, Craig is not the only actor in the industry to win this year’s award. The Orders of the British Empire and their attendant titles of ladies went to Joanna Lumley and Vanessa Redgrave this year.
Tom Daley, who won this year’s Olympic gold in Tokyo, was made an MBE for his services to sports, advocacy for the rights of the LGBT community and philanthropy. Diving partner and gold medalist Matty Lee also received the award.
In total, more than 1,200 people were included in the New Year’s award list.
Analysis: why did Craig receive an unusual order and what is this garter?

As a rule, there is nothing surprising in the New Year’s award lists. Everyone knows that the queen, from whose name official honors come (historically, only a monarch can knight mere mortals), carries out the recommendations of her cabinet.
The government, on the other hand, seeks to celebrate people who have distinguished themselves in the field of science, art, sports, or politics.

But this year, the surprise was that actor Daniel Craig was awarded the Most Distinguished Order of Saints Michael and George (that’s the full name of the award).
It was founded in April 1818 by the Prince Regent, the future King George IV, to reward people in the highest military or civil positions in the Mediterranean territories that became part of Britain after the defeat of Napoleon.
Later, the functions of the order were expanded to be given to those who “occupy high and confidential posts in Her Majesty’s colonial dominions, and as a reward for service to the Crown in the foreign affairs of the Empire”.
It is clear that there is practically nothing left of the British Empire, but the order has been preserved. Most of his current cavaliers worked in the diplomatic field, or were and are engaged in any business outside the queen’s possessions for the benefit of the state. Given that the famous hero of Ian Fleming, an active member of Her Majesty’s Secret Service, James Bond, was awarded the Order of Saints Michael and George, it is not difficult to draw conclusions.

Craig, playing his last Bond in 2021’s No Time to Die, equaled his hero in honors. He received the title of Honorary Commander of the British Royal Navy. In this capacity, he will represent the fleet in the international arena (of course, not in military missions) and provide assistance to the families of sailors who are abroad. In this regard, his awarding the Order of Michael and George seems to be quite justified.
As for the Order of the Garter, which former Labor Prime Minister Tony Blair became a knight, it was founded long before the British Empire and Great Britain as such appeared. This happened in the XIV century, when Scotland was still living on its own, and the English king Edward III was much more interested in seizing as much land as possible not in the north, but in the south – in France.
The Order of the Garter owes its origin to the Hundred Years War and was quite progressive for its time. While all European monarchies, including France, paid the most attention to the nobility of knights admitted to elite communities, Edward decided to reward his knights for valor and devotion, regardless of how many noble ancestors they could boast of.
There are several opinions about why such a strange name arose.
According to the legends, one fine day Edward III was dancing at a ball in the city of Calais (at that time the British had just successfully recaptured him from the French) with his mistress, the beautiful Countess of Salisbury. At some point, her garter allegedly broke and fell out from under her skirt. One of the courtiers chuckled badly. Edward could not endure such a dismissive attitude towards the lady, he raised the garter, looked at the offender carefully and said: “Be ashamed to those who think badly about this.” After that, he established a knightly order with the same name and exactly the same motto.

This story is good, but almost certainly not related to reality.
Firstly, in the 14th century, the garter was a standard part of the men’s, not the women’s attire. Secondly, the motto had to do with the claims of the English kings to the French throne, and they really had them, given, for example, that Edward’s mother was a French princess. Thirdly, under the garter, most likely, they meant special belts and laces that fastened knightly armor. The idea was that the king and his loyal knights were as closely related to each other as the knight’s armor, and their adhesion was just as important on the battlefield.
The Order of the Garter was, for example, the Duke of Wellington, who led the British army in the war against Napoleon. To date, it has another former prime minister, Conservative John Major.

Winston Churchill was offered it twice. At 19In 1945, despite the just-completed victory over Germany, Churchill’s party lost in the parliamentary elections.
