90,000 FedEx transport aircraft. Now with a touch of combat lasers

14.02.2022Author

Mark Mishin

FedEx has applied to the US Aviation Administration for approval to install a laser anti-missile defense system on its cargo aircraft as an additional security measure. In a statement, the company is asking for permission to install and use anti-missile systems on its A321-200 cargo aircraft.

The carrier considers incidents when civilian aircraft were fired upon by MANPADS equipped with infrared homing missiles as the basis for the need for such a peculiar upgrade.

The principle of operation of heat-seeking missiles is extremely simple. They find the target by the heat coming from the jet engine, and automatically adjust their course to hit the target. Military aircraft are equipped with special “heat traps” that, when fired, create many decoys and help to evade the attacking projectile. For clumsy transport and civil aircraft with several engines under the wing, this method of protection against accidental or deliberate attack is not available. However, an alternative solution was developed a long time ago – a device that “shoots” a laser at an approaching missile, trying to disrupt its tracking system. Protective systems of this kind are planned to be installed on the company’s transport aircraft.

From the outside, the idea of equipping civilian aircraft with combat devices looks a little curious. Many people are already joking about crashes of UPS and DHL planes “for unclear reasons.” But still I would like to know what the future will bring us. Maybe a postal service van carrying “goodness and democracy” with flamethrowers, or a vending machine with a built-in self-destruct system when trying to break in?

***PRESS RELEASE: FedEx Releases Form 10-K with Additional Cyber Attack Disclosure on TNT Express Systems – Russia |

Press releases

July 18, 2017 4:34 pm

The company confirms its intention to increase FedEx’s operating income by $1. 2-$1.5 billion by 2020.

Memphis, Tennessee, USA – July 17 BUSINESS WIRE – FedEx Corp. (NYSE: FDX) (“FedEx”) filed its 2017 Form 10-K annual report with the Securities and Exchange Commission today. The document contains additional information about the June 2017 cyber attack on the global information systems of TNT Express B.V. (“TNT”), a global express, ground shipping and small package shipping company that FedEx acquired in May 2016.

Cyberattack on TNT Express

On June 28, 2017, FedEx announced that TNT’s global operations were significantly affected by the Petya cyberattack, which consisted of spreading information technology virus technology through a Ukrainian tax software product. The systems and data of all other FedEx companies are currently unaffected by this attack. TNT operates in Ukraine and uses compromised software, which allowed the virus to infiltrate TNT systems and encrypt data. TNT’s operations and communications systems were heavily impacted, but at the time of this press release, there was no known hack or data leak to a third party.

Immediately after the attack, FedEx put in place contingency plans to restore TNT’s operations and communications systems. At the time of this press release, all TNT warehouses, centers and facilities are operational and most TNT services are available. However, customers still experience widespread service and billing delays, so a significant portion of TNT’s transactions and customer service are handled manually. We cannot estimate when TNT services will be fully restored. The contingency plans used by the FedEx Express and TNT networks remain in place to minimize the impact on customers.

Our IT teams are focused on restoring critical systems and continue to move towards full service resumption and critical systems recovery. We are currently in the process of restoring the remaining operating systems along with financial, office and additional business support systems. While we cannot estimate how long it will take to recover affected systems, it is possible that TNT will not be able to fully recover all of its affected systems and critical business data that were encrypted by the virus.

Given the recent timing and scale of the attack, in addition to our initial focus on restoring operations and serving TNT customers, we are still assessing the financial impact of the attack, but it looks like the damage will be significant. We do not have cyber attack insurance or any other insurance that would cover the damage caused by an attack. While we are unable to provide specific amounts at this time, we are experiencing a decline in revenue due to lower volumes in TNT and increased costs associated with implementing contingency plans and recovering affected systems.

Additional impacts and risks from a cyberattack that could adversely affect our results of operations and financial position are set out in the related description of risk factors in the Management‘s Discussion and Analysis section of the Company’s 2017 Form 10-K Annual Report, which was released this morning. In addition to the financial implications, a cyberattack could significantly affect the levers and procedures for disclosing our information and internal controls over financial reporting in future periods.

FedEx Express 2020 Operating Profit Guidance Reaffirmed

FedEx reaffirms its intention to increase FedEx Express Group operating income by $1.2 billion to $1.5 billion in FY 2020 versus FY 2017, based on moderate economic growth and current accounting and tax regulations.
