Average hourly minimum wage in Japan to rise to a record 930 yen

EconomySociety coronavirus crisis.

Government subcommittee agrees to propose an increase in the average minimum hourly wage in Japan in FY 2021 by 28 yen to 930 yen. The proposal by the Department of Health, Labor and Welfare’s Central Council Minimum Wage Subcommittee would set the biggest wage increase since fiscal year 2002, when the country began regulating the minimum hourly wage. The lowest rate of 792 yen per hour in Akita, Tottori, Shimane, Kochi, Saga, Oita and Okinawa prefectures will rise to 820 yen, leaving no regions below 800 yen in the country.

In the Basic Economic and Tax Administration Reform Policy adopted by the Cabinet in June, the government announced a target of 1,000 yen as the national average hourly minimum wage. This goal should be achieved as soon as possible based on business performance prior to COVID-19., and she determined the planned growth for the current year. Small and medium-sized enterprises surviving the pandemic insisted on maintaining the current situation, but the government intends to raise wages.

Following the report of the sub-committee of the ministry, the new minimum wage standards are due to come into effect around October, after which decisions on the level of increase in individual prefectures will be made.

The minimum wage is highest in highly urbanized prefectures, exceeding 1,000 yen in Tokyo and Kanagawa and 900 yen in Saitama, Chiba, Shizuoka, Aichi, Mie, Osaka, Kyoto and Hyogo. On the contrary, in Tohoku, Shikoku and Kyushu regions, the minimum wage in many prefectures is still less than 850 yen, which means that these regions are still far from reaching the target national average of 1,000 yen.

It is also worth noting the difference between the minimum wage and the minimum hourly wage. The minimum wage applies to employees hired on the basis of an employment contract (umowa o pracę). Important information about the minimum wage in Poland

There is a large difference in the level of wages between individual voivodeships in the country. It is worth noting the difference in wages at large industrial enterprises with modern equipment and small firms. Big companies tend to pay more. The economic sector also plays an important role: for example, workers in real estate or IT receive more than workers in hotels and restaurants.

    Minimum wage and regions

The Polish labor market is not homogeneous, the differences between regions are significant. In the more developed parts of the country (west and center), few people think about such a concept as “minimum wage”. Employers here offer good salaries. The situation is different in the less developed voivodships. It is important for their residents to know how much the minimum wage is and how much they are required to pay. Knowing the laws will help you avoid dishonest employers that exist in every country.

According to the latest data from the Central Statistical Office, the richest and most developing regions of Poland are Warsaw (considered as a separate region), Silesian, Greater Poland, Lower Silesian and Lesser Poland Voivodeships. The poorest regions are Opolskie, Lubuskie, Świętokrzyskie voivodeships.⁶

    Wages for men and women

The difference in wages between men and women in Poland is on average 7.7%. The higher the position, the greater the difference in income. The emergence of such wage inequality is a problem, and the vast majority of Poles find the gender wage gap unacceptable. The authorities are aware of the problem and share statistics on the government website. At the moment the situation is better than in many other European countries.¹¹

    Income tax in Poland

In 2022, as in previous years, tax in Poland is calculated in accordance with certain limits. If you earn up to PLN 120,000 gross per year¹², the tax is 17%. For example, you work in a restaurant and earn PLN 4,400 gross per month. Subtract the 17% tax (plus Social Security and Medicare fees) from this amount to arrive at the amount you will receive.

The second threshold is over PLN 120 thousand. For example, you work in the IT field and receive PLN 20,000 gross per month. Initially, the tax on your income will be 17%, but at some point the total amount of income will already exceed PLN 120 thousand, and the tax will increase to 32%. If you are self-employed, the employer pays the tax and you receive the net amount. nine0005

Be that as it may, in recent years the quality of life and the level of satisfaction with life in the country has increased significantly. Therefore, if you are still thinking about where to move, consider Poland as one of the options.
