November 22, Evening Transportation Update

Dear MPLSD Parents and Guardians,

Good afternoon!  The purpose of this communication is to share a transportation
update.

With one of our busses not running today, we are going to need to juggle just a little this
afternoon to get everyone home as efficiently as possible.  Our plan will be as follows:
Bus #4 students will need to stay after school for approximately 15 – 20 minutes.
Bus #6 will take the Midway/Sedalia “in-town” students home immediately after school,
and then bus #6 will return to the school to pick-up the bus #4 students and take them
home.

Bus #6 “rural” students will board bus #2 immediately after school and ride home on that
bus.

These adjustments will allow us to get everyone home in as efficient of a manner as
possible.

Again, we apologize for the inconvenience this may cause.  We are continuing our
search for bus drivers.  Thank you for your continued understanding and support.  It is
appreciated.

Also, as a quick reminder, there is no school Wednesday through Friday this week,
November 23 through November 25, in observance of Thanksgiving.

Classes will resume on Monday, November 28, 2022.

Madison Plains hosts College/Career Fair

On October 20, 2022, Madison Plains hosted a College/Career Fair from 8:30-12:30 for our high school students during the school day.

All students in grades 9-12 spent time with the representatives to gather information to help prepare them for their future.

We had a total of 29 college/career reps attend. (12 colleges, 5 branches of the military, 8 trades, and 4 local businesses).

Thank you to the Scholastic Boosters for providing lunch to our representatives that attended. We are planning now to have

a bigger turnout for next year!

Thank you for supporting the levy – November 9, 2022

Dear Madison-Plains Local School District Parents, Guardians, and Community Members,
 
On behalf of the Board of Education, the administration, and the entire staff of the Madison-Plains Local School District (MPLSD), I would like to say thank you to all of our parents, guardians, and community members for passing the permanent improvement levy renewal that was on the ballot yesterday, Tuesday, November 08, 2022.  The support of our community is appreciated and is not taken for granted.  

Our district’s mission statement says, “As a partnership of rural, agricultural communities, the Madison-Plains Local School District will achieve excellence through quality educational resources to maximize student success.”  Educational resources are at the heart of the permanent improvement levy, as the funds from the levy go towards items such as books, technology for students and teachers, busses, and to the maintenance and repair of our facilities.  

The vision for our school district is that MPLSD would be a model of excellence in rural education, and we continue to realize progress towards that vision.  As you likely know, our latest state report card results make MPLSD the highest overall rated school district in the county, having earned 18 out of a possible 25 stars.  Our entire staff is working very hard to provide the very best educational experience they can for our students.

2022 10 23 1820 MP Transportation Update Social Media Version

The purpose of this communication is to provide you with an update on
transportation.  We have a retired bus driver who has agreed to come back to help us, beginning
tomorrow, Monday, October 24, 2022, and because of that, we are able to combine
some routes in some different ways than we have been in order to get everyone to
school on time, or very close to it.

Top 100

MPLSD students who are gifted achieved among the highest achievement scores in the state in the spring of 2019, ranking in the top 100 districts and earning a 117.6 performance index score out of 120 possible points.  They also had the highest achievement in Madison County.

In this article we will tell you how schools in the USA work, how to enroll a child who does not speak English in school and help him learn. We will also answer other questions that immigrants have about this. After all, school attendance in America is mandatory in all states.

Recall that in the United States, all children from 5 to 21 years old are admitted to a public school at their place of residence, regardless of the status of their stay in the country, the type of visa and the availability of documents. Primary school – for students from 5 years old to 5 or 6 grades, secondary school – from 6 or 7 to 8 or 9classes, senior – from 9 or 10 to 12 class.

How can I get a school education?

First of all decide which school you want to send your child to. Public schools are free and do not offer religious instruction. Charter schools are public institutions that are independent of the local school district. Well, with private ones, everything is more or less clear: independent and paid ones. Another way to get an education is home schooling. Its requirements vary from state to state.

A child is assigned to a class based on two factors: age and level of previous education.

How long is the academic year?

The school year usually starts in August or September and ends in May or June. In some places, children go to school all year round. Lessons run from Monday to Friday. Many schools offer programs before or after regular school hours for children whose parents work. You may be charged for these pre- or post-secondary programs, but some special tutoring services are available free of charge.

What documents are required to enroll a child?

You need your child’s medical records and proof that the child has the required vaccinations. You may also need proof of identity, such as a birth certificate, and proof that you live in the same community as the school, such as a lease. If you do not have these documents, please contact the school to learn about your options. The school is accepted even if the child does not have a permanent place of residence.

What if the child does not speak English?

If your child does not speak English, the school district will evaluate your child’s language skills. The school will then provide the services needed to learn English and participate in an academic program for their level of study. The school district is responsible for meeting your child’s language needs and for informing you in a language you understand. In addition to language services during the school day, some schools offer after-school programs and tutoring to help students improve their English.

What if my child has a disability?

Eligibility for free public education and related services in the United States does not depend on the presence or absence of a disability. Your child will be placed in a regular school class if it suits their needs. Sometimes he may need special education or related services outside of the normal classroom. All educational decisions will be agreed with you by the school.

How long can my child attend public school for free if they did not attend school prior to coming to the United States?

In most states, students can attend public schools free of charge until graduation or age 21. If the student is younger than 22 years of age, they may enroll in high school. If a student has not completed school by age 22, they may enroll in adult secondary education (ASE) classes. ASE classes help prepare students to earn a recognized equivalent of a high school diploma (such as a GED) instead of a regular high school diploma. Check with your state department of education for GEDs or other high school equivalent classes.

How will the child get to school?

Children can walk, ride the school bus or use public transport. Many public schools have free buses that pick up children close to home. Other schools provide passes so they can ride local public transport for free or at a reduced cost. Please contact your local school district to learn about your options. If you have a car, you can create an autopool with other parents in your area.

What will my child eat at school?

Children can take lunch to school or buy it in the school cafeteria. The US government provides healthy, inexpensive or free meals to more than 26 million children each school day. Participation in the School Breakfast Program and the National School Lunch Program is based on income and family size.

Check with the school to see if your child is eligible for the federal school meals program.

Who pays for books and school activities?

Public schools usually provide free books. School supplies such as paper and pencils are purchased by the students themselves. If you are unable to pay, please contact the school for assistance. Some educational institutions may charge a small fee for supplies or special events such as field trips. Many schools offer sports and music programs that can be free or very inexpensive.

What will my child learn at school?

Each state sets its own academic standards. They define what learners need to know and at what level. Most schools teach English, mathematics, social and natural sciences, physical education, art, music, and sometimes foreign languages ​​are also offered.

How is a child’s performance evaluated?

Teachers give points (grades) for homework, classroom work, tests, attendance and behavior. Your child receives a report card several times a year. There are different ways to grade students: letter grades ranging from A or A+ for excellent work and D or F for poor or unsatisfactory work; numerical ratings or words such as “excellent”, “good”, or “needs improvement”.

What if my child misses school?

Attendance is very important. Parents must send a written notice to the teacher or call to explain the reason for their child’s absence from school. It is better to inform about it in advance.

Is my child safe at school?

Most American public schools are safe places to learn. If you are still worried about this, talk to your teacher, school counselor, principal, or other administrator.

Bullying is unwanted aggressive behavior of school-age children. To learn more about how to prevent or respond to bullying, visit www.stopbullying.gov.

Parent Help

Most public and private schools have a Parent Teacher Association (PTA) or Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) that you can join. These groups help parents find out what’s going on at school or how to get involved in school activities. The PTA/PTO also supports schools by sponsoring special events and providing volunteers to help in the classroom. You will be able to participate even if you don’t speak English.

So, now you know a little more about school education in the US and understand where to start and what to look for.

D28 Diversity Plan

What is a Diversity Plan?

Student Diversity Plans are community-driven processes that promote equal opportunity and enhance learning. Each district plan uses a separate grant to promote and support its school district (five in total: 9, 13, 16, 28 and 31) in the process of engaging the local community and developing the plan. The community engagement process in District 28 has not yet begun, so no proposals have yet been received.

What is the planning process?

Community members who live, work, and study in District 28 are directly involved in the development of the District 28 Student Diversity Plan and make their own recommendations for middle school diversity and student achievement. Diversity is a broad concept, so recommendations can cover a wide range of solutions.

Recommendations are created with the involvement of the local community through public comment, small focus groups, etc. The process will result in the District 28 Diversity Plan. It will contain recommendations for the implementation of District 28 priorities identified during a meeting with members of the local community.

Why is District 28 developing a Student Diversity Plan?

District 28 was one of 17 districts that requested a grant from the New York City Department of Education. Excerpt from District 28 Statement: “In addition to addressing district school admissions, we hope that financial assistance will help school communities develop strategies to bring students from different ethnic backgrounds together and highlight the importance of each child in society… The grant will allow us to support communicate effectively with the public and hear everyone’s voice. ” District 28 also participates in the New York State Grant Program, which provides funds and training to districts to develop integration plans.

What does the DOE mean by diversity?

Diversity includes concepts such as race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, spoken language, place of birth, immigration status, abilities, special needs, religion, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, housing, cultural background, and life experience.

Why was WXY selected to run the District 28 Plan, and what are the terms of the contract?

“According to District 15 progress reports and support provided to Districts 9 and 13 during the planning stages, this provider’s services are critical to the success of new districts. WXY will assist new counties in engaging with local communities, which is an important step in supporting diversity and inclusion. This process includes the following resources and skills: stakeholder analysis, facilitating meetings with the local community, summarizing and presenting information received during meetings, data analysis and project management skills.

How does the DOE intend to implement the recommendations of the Student Diversity Plan after the process is completed?

Recommendations are submitted and approved by the mayor of the city and the director of the Department of Education. The working group includes a DOE representative who will liaise with the Department of Education. It informs the DOE of the community’s priorities and will provide the funding and resources needed to achieve the goals.

Has the planning process already begun?

Pre-study completed to date for District 28; a working group was formed based on recommendations provided to WXY by the district superintendent, principals, parent coordinators, and others; questions answered and feedback from parties on the planning process included; initial data analysis was carried out. Preliminary meetings of the working group were held.

Engagement with the local community has not started yet. It is at this stage that members of the local community will develop recommendations. The events have not yet taken place.

What are the responsibilities of the working group?

New York City has a practice of setting up working or steering groups to develop local plans to deal with complex issues. Unlike strategies proposed by city agencies, the task force draws on feedback from district residents and school staff during meetings and workshops to form new ideas and recommendations.

How was the composition of the working group determined?

The composition of the task force is based on recommendations from the district superintendent, principals, District 28 parent coordinators, teacher unions, and school leaders. There have been requests from members of the public and elected officials to increase the number of parent members. The offer was taken into account. The number of parent-members increased from 3 to 6. All members of the group were selected according to the principles of the formation of the working group. The principles can be found on our website.

How was diversity considered in the selection of working group members?

District 28 is diverse. There are hundreds of different groups represented here. Geographical and racial diversity was taken into account first when forming the working group. Racial diversity used the same basic categories that the DOE applies to students. We understand that these categories do not include religious affiliations and ethnic groups, and recognize that, due to limitations, the working group cannot fully reflect the diversity of District 28.

Will District 28’s plan be similar to District 15’s?

District 28’s Student Diversity Plan will be very different from District 15’s plan. District 15 has different goals, geography, and demographics; the district has a different school enrollment policy. For example, District 15 has a district middle school selection program and no zoned schools. The District 28 plan will reflect the needs of District 28.

What is the format of the public comment?

Discussions vary. Some will take the form of presentations and small group discussions (with notes of the meeting). Holding discussions in small groups promotes effective discussion of ideas and further actions. Groups are randomly determined during registration. This will allow participants to get to know each other and exchange views. Perhaps in the future meetings will be held in an open dialogue format, where participants can immediately express their opinion on potential recommendations.

Who can participate in public discussions?

Discussions are intended for members of the District 28 community: District 28 residents, students, educators, principals, and local educational organizations in District 28.

Is public feedback expected to be taken into account only at the first two meetings?

No. Community feedback is taken into account throughout the planning process.
