Texas Hold’em – rules of the game

Our poker lessons will of course start with the rules. There are many different variations of poker: Omaha, Texas Hold’em, Stud and others.

Texas Hold’em is the most popular poker game in the world. Therefore, in this article we will analyze the rules of the game in this type of poker.

If we talk about the exact date and place of birth of this game, then it is unlikely that reliable figures and facts can be found anywhere. The most acceptable version is that he came to us from North America (in particular, from Alaska) in the form in which we know him now.

For the first time the rules of Texas Hold’em were approved in 1900 in Texas (Robstown), which actually owes its name. But its popularity really took off with the first poker tournament in 1969.

World Poker Tour (WPT) commentator and poker pro Mike Sexton likes to say, “ It only takes a minute to learn the rules of poker. Texas Hold’em, and a lifetime to become a master” .

How to learn to play poker?

Poker is like an onion – you peel back layers of knowledge one by one. As you travel through the world of poker, you never stop learning something new.

How to play Texas Hold’em? Rules

Now we will analyze in detail all the stages of the game of poker.

  • Landing

Hold’em is usually played by nine or ten players. Figure 1 shows a typical posture for this variation of poker. In this example, there are ten players at the table with identical pots (number of chips).

Figure 1

  • Dealer chip

Dealer chip, labeled disc “Dealer” or “D” , is a very important part of the game as it shows who is dealt and takes position “button” . Each player will have to visit the dealer once in one round. If you are playing in a casino, then you will have a professional dealer at the table who will deal cards to everyone except himself. However, in this case, the dealer’s chip passes in a circle from player to player.

The cards are dealt first to the player to the left of the button, and then clockwise. At figure 1 player 1 has the dealer’s chip. In the next hand, player 2 will have it, and then player 3, and so on. In a company without a professional dealer, players deal cards (are dealers) in turn.

The position of the dealer (button) is the most favorable position in the game. The player in this place makes the last bet, after he has seen what decisions the others have made. The exception is the first round of betting, as the blinds come into play immediately after the dealer.

Before being dealt cards, the rules require the two players to the left of the dealer to post the so-called blinds , mandatory bets that are made by default in every hand. The player to the left of the button (picture 1) bets half of the required bet – the small blind is . The next one puts in a full bet – big blind . In our example, the small blind is $1 and the big blind is $2.

  • Distribution

After the small and big blinds are posted, each player is dealt two cards face down and face down. These are pocket cards. The best starting cards, according to the rules of Texas Hold’em, are two aces. The first round of preflop trading begins.

After the poker blinds have been posted and hole cards have been dealt, betting begins. This round is called the preliminary . The player to the left of the big blind enters the bet first (in Figure 1, this would be number 4). He can post the big blind, which in our example would be $2, raise, or fold. If the player decides to fold, then he discards his cards face down in the center of the table and waits for the next deal. Turn passes to the next player in clockwise order until each player has been given the opportunity to bet, raise or fold.

In general, the bidding rules can be a bit confusing for beginners. At in Figure 1 (above) you can see that players 2 and 3 have posted the small and big blinds. If everyone to the left of number 3 decides to call the $2 bet (i.e. also put in $2), the turn goes to the small blind, player 2, who has only bet $1 so far. Now he has a choice – to bet $1 and support the bet, raise it or fold and fold, losing $1 in this hand. Regardless of his decision, the big blind bets last.

If the player in the big blind (number 2) decides to raise, then all remaining players must either raise or call or fold. For example, let’s say players 4 and 5 call the $2 big blind, but number 6 decides to raise to $4. All players to the left of number 6 must now either support the $4 bet, raise again, or fold. Since Player 2 is already in the small blind, he only posts an additional $3. Players 3, 4, and 5 have already bet $2 each, so they must deliver another $2. According to the rules of Texas Hold’em poker, they also have the choice of raising or folding. Figure 2 shows what could happen:

Figure 2

After player 6 made a $4 bet, player 7 decided to fold and is now out of the game. Player 8 decides to support $4. Players 9, 10 and 1 folded and also left the game. Players 2, 3, 4 and 5 support Player 6’s bet. Once all bets have been called (i.e. no one else raises), the first round of betting ends. In our example, there are 6 players left at the table and the pot is $24 ($4 x 6). Players move on to the next betting round.

  • Flop

After the first round of betting is completed, according to the rules of the game, the dealer lays out three community cards in the center of the table. All remaining players use these three cards along with their two starting cards to make the best hand. These three cards are called the flop. On Figure 3 you see an example flop:

Figure 3

As you can see on Figure 3 all bets from the previous round are bank ($24). After the flop, a new betting round begins. The player to the left of the dealer makes the first bet. In our example, this is the small blind, number 2. There are no more mandatory bets, and the player has two options – check or put chips in the pot. “Check” means that the player remains in the draw without a raise if the number of chips he has invested matches the bets of previous players. When a contestant checks, the turn passes to the next active player, who may also check. If a player wants to pass, he says “check” or taps his fingers on the table (or presses the appropriate button when playing poker online).

However, if someone decides to open the bet and bet, the rules of Texas Hold’em do not allow the following players to check and must call, raise, or fold. And this applies to all players who previously said “check”. Once all bets in this round have been made or all players have checked, you can proceed to the next round of betting. In our example, numbers 2, 3, 4, and 5 all checked after the flop. But player 6 bet $4 and player 8 called. Players 2, 3 and 4 folded, but player 5 called for $4. These three players move to “ turn” .

  • Turn

After the second round of betting is completed, another card is placed on the table, it is called the “turn”. As you can see from Figure 4, there are only three players left in the hand, the rest folded on the flop.

Figure 4

You also see that the pot is now $36: $24 from the first round and $12 after the flop. After the appearance of the 4th community card, a new round begins according to the same rules of Hold’em as the previous one. Trading traditionally begins with the first active (remaining in the hand) player to the left of the dealer. In our example, this is number 5. He can check or bet. Let’s assume that number 5 checks in the same way as players 6 and 8. If all players check, the round ends and we move on to “river” . Because no one bet, the pot didn’t increase.

  • River

After the third round of betting is completed, the fifth and final card, called the “river”, is placed on the table. Figure 5 shows the situation after the fifth card has been placed on the table.

Figure 5

With the appearance of the fifth card, a new round of betting begins. In our hand, suppose player 5 bets $4 and player 6 raises another $4 (the bet becomes $8), player 8 folds and player 5 calls and lays down another $4. If the last betting round ends with two or more active participants, we move to to showdown , the final stage of the game.

After the final betting round is completed, it’s time to find out who won the hand and, accordingly, the pot. Now that all the cards are on the table, each player can combine their hole cards with any of the five community cards to make the best combination. Now the players reveal their cards. As the rules say, the player who raised last (player 6) must show his cards first. In Figure 6, both participants revealed their cards:

Figure 6

Whose combination won?

So, as you can see, player has 5 straight (8, 9, 10, J, Q) , and player has 6 three of a kind (4, 4, 4, A, J) . If you learned the ranking of combinations in the previous lesson, then you should know that a straight beats a three of a kind (set). Therefore, player 5 wins this hand. After the final betting round, the prize is $52. Player 5 receives the $52. You can start a new distribution.

According to the rules of poker, the hand can be over even before the players get to the flop. Our example went to showdown. But if conditional player 5 made a bet, for example, $8 more preflop, and no one supported it (everyone folded), then player 5 would take the pot. The same can happen on the flop, the turn, and the river. Imagine a boxing match where an athlete can win in the first round with a knockout, or can stand 12 rounds, and victory is determined by points.

It’s also worth noting that if you get to showdown, you don’t even have to use your two cards. If your best hand consists entirely of cards lying on the table, then you are said to be playing on the table. For example: If five community cards (flop, turn and river) constitute a Royal Flush, the best hand in poker, then all remaining active players share the prize, regardless of their cards. Even though everyone has seven cards, only five of them make up the hand – the best five.

Texas Hold’em combinations

In case you forgot, when playing Texas Hold’em, card combinations are ranked as follows: “nothing”, or in cases where the players have the same combinations in their hands. For example, both have the same pair or two pairs. With a straight, a straight with an ace is also possible, where the ace can be considered as a unit – A-2-3-4-5 (small street) .

Obviously, some combinations of “ pocket” cards can further improve on the flop, turn or river. For example, a pair of suited connectors ( or , etc.) can hit a straight or flush on the river nine times out of a hundred.

By the way, a pair that came during the distribution is not so often justified as it might seem at first glance, and the probability of making a set is not much more than getting two (pair) more to one of your two hole cards during the game. Such situations should always be taken into account when making a decision at the bidding stage in a particular round.

Limit and No-Limit Hold’em

Above we looked at the rules of $2/$4 FL Limit Texas Hold’em where all bets, including raises (raises) and reraises (reraises), are fixed. In this case, everything is very simple – in the first two rounds of betting (preflop and flop), the size of the first bet (including the big blind) is equal to the lower limit ($2), and in the third and fourth (turn and river) – the upper limit ($4). The small blind is always half the big blind. The number of raises is also limited – no more than four in each round of betting.

Rules of No Limit Hold’em say that the maximum bet can be anything and is limited only by your available money (stack). The number of upgrades is also unlimited. The size of the big blind, as well as the size of the minimum raise (raise) is indicated in the table name. For example, in NL10 Hold’em the big blind will be $10. Thanks to this freedom of action, many poker strategies are written specifically for this type of game.

We hope that you have been able to learn a lot of useful information from this article. These were the basics of playing Texas Hold’em, then we still have to analyze a lot of theoretical material for a successful and profitable poker game.
