Rearing of queens by three groups of bee colonies

Rearing of queens by three groups of bee colonies

Republican unitary enterprise “Brest bee nursery” was organized in 1946 on the basis of the former estate of Volyanovo, not far from the village of Radvanichi, Brest region. For high performance in the production of queen bees and bee packages of the Central Russian breed of bees, the nursery was repeatedly awarded with diplomas and medals of VDNKh of the USSR, and for achievements in season 1978 years old also with a Moskvich passenger car.

The bee nursery was then (from June 1971 until his retirement in January 1989) led by Vladimir Denisovich Filippovich, a passionate promoter of a healthy lifestyle. Over the years, the nursery has grown to 1200 bee colonies. Students of the Smilovichi Agricultural College annually had an internship here, work was carried out to improve the breeding qualities of bee colonies under the guidance of Anatoly Stepanovich Gurchenko, candidate of biological sciences, senior researcher at the beekeeping laboratory of BelNIIKPO. nine0003

Specialization in breeding Central Russian bees continued until the mid-80s of the last century. Then, due to the spread and great popularization of Carpathian bees on the pages of beekeeping publications and a sharp decrease in demand for Central Russian bees due to their aggressiveness, the nursery was transferred to breeding peace-loving Carpathians. However, the subsequent deterioration in the economic condition of collective farms and state farms – the main buyers of bee packages and queen bees, which led to a drop in demand for these products, as well as a three-fold change in the management of the enterprise, greatly worsened its condition. But the staff of the bee nursery survived, and in July 2004 it was headed by an experienced specialist, who previously worked in various senior positions in agriculture, Vasily Vasilyevich Dmitranitsa. nine0003

During the two years of work of the new director, the central estate was improved, a new garage was built, the production premises were put in order and conditions were created for the normal fruitful work of the team, the material and technical base was gradually updated, design estimates for the construction of four single-apartment residential buildings were prepared this year .

– Of course, the enterprise is gaining momentum thanks to the financial assistance of the state and the support of RUE Belpchelovodstvo, – says Vasily Vasilyevich. – Much attention is paid to the supply of purebred Carpathian queens from the Mukachevo bee nursery in the Transcarpathian region of Ukraine. Over the past two years, our apiaries received about 500 such queens. Now we can fully meet the need for breeding material for reproductive and commercial apiaries of all forms of ownership. This season we plan to produce 3,000 queen bees, 600 bee packages, 6 tons of marketable honey, 150 kilograms of pollen, plus wax and propolis. nine0003

I must say that the kennel has everything you need to complete the tasks. These are 8 qualified queen beekeepers who have 800 bee colonies, a large nucleus park and isolated breeding stations, 40 platforms for transporting bees to forage lands and apiary service link system.

Honey base within a radius of up to 80-100 kilometers from the nursery allows you to fully meet the needs of bee colonies in feed by transporting them to sources of nectar and pollen and sowing honey plants. White sweet clover, phacelia, cruciferous plants, berries and buckwheat are cultivated here. By the way, there is a state order for 20 tons of buckwheat grain. Points with bee colonies of the nursery are located on the territory of several administrative districts. Every year, more than 300 bee colonies are used under a contract for pollination of orchards in UE Rassvet, Brest region. nine0003

Almost all bee colonies of the nursery are kept in 16-frame hives. In the off-season, in the carpentry shop, beekeepers repair old hives, combining 4 nest boxes with a common new sheathing and a roof that is locked. The frames in such hives in relation to the notch are located on a warm skid. They make transfer cells for queens and straw mats for warming hives. By this season, all double cores of the Orlovsky type were also converted into four-seater ones with tap holes in different directions. Cores are used for 1/2 of the frame of a multi-hull hive and contain two such frames in one uterus. nine0003

Most of the most important apiary work is done jointly by the beekeepers. This is a spring revision, expansion of nests, setting stores, roaming, selecting and pumping out honey, preparing families for wintering, and others. The next mass work is performed sequentially at each of the points.

Starting this or that mass work, the leader determines the procedure for its implementation and discusses it with the members of the link, distributing duties among them so that each performer knows exactly his tasks and works with full load. In the period free from the next mass work, the leader sends beekeepers one at a time to perform various small non-standard work on caring for bees. nine0003

At present, the nursery has three units, and each of them is given an annual production task by the administration. In total, 17 people work on the farm.

After spring work, beekeepers direct all their efforts to building up the strength of bee colonies, conduct a strict culling of poorly overwintered and weak ones. Upon completion of this process, new colonies and packages of bees with fetal queens of the previous year of hatching are formed. Instead, the main families receive infertile queens. Thus, at the end of May – the first half of June, the nursery sells most of the packages that have been formed. nine0003

– This technology allows early formation of batch families of bees, – explains Vladimir Petrovich Agarkov, a leader and responsible for conducting breeding work in the nursery, – to replace the queens with young ones in the main families, build up young bees to the main honey collection and prevent swarming. In addition, our Carpathian bees are characterized by early development, high egg production of queens, which allows them to develop a great strength of colonies and make good use of honey collection from willow bushes, fruit and berry plantations, raspberries, buckthorn and field herbs. nine0003

– Vladimir Petrovich, please tell us about getting queens.

– We have a breeding group of breeding families that we use only for breeding drones and queens intended for replacement in the user family group and sale. The queens are hatched by the method of transfer of larvae. To educate future queens, we form families-caregivers using the “starter” method. We are working on this scheme for the third season.

– What is the essence of this method? nine0003

– This means that three groups of bee colonies take part in the cultivation of queen bees: the starter colony, the main nurse colony and the incubator colony. In our case, thermostats are used for incubators.

Starter colony performs the role of accepting larvae for brood rearing during the day. Therefore, it is formed a day before the inoculation of the larvae. From such a family, the uterus and all open brood are taken in a temporary layering. Of course, starter colonies must be strong, have at least 2 kg of bees, 8-10 kg of honey, at least 2 frames with perga and 4 with printed brood. They are periodically reinforced with young bees and fed daily with sugar syrup. After 20-24 hours, grafting frames with adopted larvae are taken from them and transferred to strong foster colonies for further cultivation. In the same starter families, 5-6 hours after the selection of the uterine rudiments, another batch of grafted larvae is given for reception. nine0003

The host colony, intended for rearing adopted uterine larvae, is formed in a hive-lounger, which is divided into two parts by a blind partition with a window made of a dividing grid. In one part of the hive there is a queen, all combs with sealed brood, feed and intended for growing brood, and in the other – 2 combs with food and combs with open brood. One host family is given no more than 20 uterine larvae adopted in starter families. A grafting frame with larvae is placed in the middle of the queenless part of the family between frames with open brood. nine0003

The use of a starter family in combination with a caregiver family, formed without orphanhood, allows you to get high quality queens.

As soon as the bees seal the queen cells, they are moved to a thermostat, where the temperature is maintained at 34. 5 ° C and the relative humidity of the air is 70%. The use of thermostats makes it possible, after 5 days, to release the nurse colonies from queen cells and place a new batch of accepted larvae in them. nine0003

Once sealed queen cells have been selected from the host colony, it is reused as long as it feeds well the larvae that are inserted. 9 days after the formation of the host family, the bees seal all open brood in the queenless half of the hive, so all combs with open brood are transferred from the part of the hive where the queen is located to the queenless compartment, and the printed brood is rearranged in its place. The exchange of combs with brood between the queenless and queen compartments of the hive is done every 9days, making sure that the uterus remains in its compartment.

The beekeepers of the nursery are doing their best to improve the quality of the resulting queen bees. Here, tiny cores were completely rejected, since in the spring, with significant changes in the weather, they cannot maintain the desired temperature for a long time. Therefore, for the maintenance of queens, more voluminous nuclei are used. In them, the families are mutually heated and are able to maintain normal conditions for the development of queens, under which fertility and longevity increase, as well as the yield of queens from one queen place. nine0003

For the formation of cores, waxed and paired frames are placed in colonies, where they are rebuilt and filled with brood, honey and bee bread. Then the frames with the printed brood at the exit are separated, placed in the nuclei and queens are produced.
