Fennec fox at home

Fennec fox is a desert fox that can be kept as a pet. Chanterelles of this breed are very tiny, except for their huge ears.

Unusual pets behave very much like dogs, but the owners require a lot of attention to socialize the animal.

Behavior with people

The lifestyle in the wild explains the behavior of chanterelles with humans, they are very social and attached to their owners. Fenech is also friendly to other people, does not show aggression and is not afraid.

Sometimes other pets do not like the new family member, more often because he constantly interferes and tries to play with them. When the fox is full, it can purr and behave calmly.

Like other small animals, the fennec fox defends itself by emitting a scent of musk. The glands are located at the tip of the tail and are activated when the animal is frightened or upset. Like dogs, the fox can defend itself and bite if it feels threatened.

House and street

Chanterelles are very active, fast and agile, be prepared for loud noises when playing. If you live in your own house, then do not let the fox out into the yard for free range. Fenech is able to very quickly make a tunnel up to 6 meters deep, so you will either have to additionally strengthen the territory, or keep the animal on a leash or in an aviary.

If you want to keep fennel in an aviary, then take into account the temperature regime. The desert fox feels uncomfortable already at temperatures below 20 degrees.

It is also necessary to keep the fox in the house carefully. As soon as the animal feels free to act, it will immediately fit into any box, dig through everything that is possible, and is unlikely to behave calmly.

Chanterelle can be put in a special cage for dwarf dogs for a short time, the small size of the chanterelle allows it to use the cage as a hole and sleep there. In nature, animals are nocturnal, but at home they quickly adapt to their owner’s schedule.

Toilet training

Pets can be litter box trained, although this takes an incredible amount of effort for owners. For the most part, a fox cub is put a treat in the tray, and this is the only way to teach it. It is impossible to scold for the fact that the animal went to the toilet in the wrong place, this will only aggravate the situation.

You can teach a fox cub to walk like a puppy, however, in winter it will freeze very much.

Walks

A fox cub can be trained, but it still should not be released without a leash. He will willingly resort to your call in the house, and on the street he can run away. Chanterelles run very fast, so it is not possible to catch up with them. Try to walk with your pet on hot and sunny days, because the fennec fox loves to bask in the sun most of all.

Constant walking and playing in the fresh air partially solve the problem with the animal’s huge energy reserve.

Power

Feeding fox food is the smartest thing to do, but it’s not easy to order. In this regard, the owners find a simpler solution – they feed ready-made food for cats and dogs and periodically feed the fox with vegetables and fruits. Breeders may recommend a diet of raw meat, vegetables, and a vitamin blend.

Conclusion

To get such an animal at home, first, protect the fennel from the house and the house from the fennec. An indefatigable amount of energy brings catastrophic destruction, but if your other pets are also active, then there may not be a problem because the pets will just play with each other.

10 Charming Fox Species – WIDE WORLD

There are over 30 types of fox today, and many of them are very cute. They have charming faces and fluffy fur that you just want to stroke.

Here is our list of the 10 most adorable fox species.

Arctic fox

The little white fox that looks just like an arctic fox can definitely melt your heart because she is so cute. In appearance, it can already be said that this animal belongs to the Arctic tundra. The arctic fox is a species that lives in the Arctic Circle, including Canada, Europe, Greenland, Iceland, and Russia. Thick fur can keep a polar fox warm even at temperatures below zero degrees. The most interesting thing about them is that their fur is not always white, as it changes with the seasons. This beautiful white coat only appears in winter so these adorable foxes can “melt” into the snow. In summer, their coat takes on a bluish-gray, brownish or grayish tint.

One of the most adorable features of Arctic foxes is that they wrap their tail around their bodies when they sleep. The fluffy tail acts like a blanket, keeping them warm in cold temperatures. At the same time, their feet also have a layer of thick fur that functions as built-in snowshoes. Thick fur on the paw helps to muffle their footsteps, helping to hunt. Despite their small size, these little curious creatures can also prey on small mammals and rodents such as lemmings. Arctic foxes are omnivores and in winter they eat almost everything from fruits to birds, insects and even carrion. When summer comes when fruits are plentiful, they also gather and hide extra food under rocks for the winter. Arctic foxes are solitary animals and they only come together during the mating season.

Bengal fox

Also known as the Indian fox, this is a species of Asian fox that is endemic to the Indian subcontinent. Like the arctic fox, the coat color of this species of fox also changes at different times of the year. The Bengal fox is medium in size and has a large bushy black-tipped tail which is its most noticeable feature. The tail alone makes up to 60% of the length of her body, and this is very important. Normally the tail trails behind when she walks, but a fox will carry her tail horizontally when she is running. If the fox wants to make sharp turns, it will keep its tail upright. As territorial animals, Bengal foxes use scent marks and scratch marks to indicate their hunting grounds and territories. Bengal foxes are omnivorous and feed mainly on eggs, fruits, insects, reptiles, and rodents.

This species of fox prefers to live in foothills and treeless areas with arid environments such as open pastures, semi-deserts, and thorn bushes. This is why they have large ears that function as an adaptation for thermoregulation in their hot and dry environment. Since Bengal foxes are not afraid of people, sometimes they can be found in agricultural fields. The most amazing thing about them is that they can dig underground lairs with difficulty. They include many rooms and even escape routes where the breeding couple lives with the pups. Threats to Bengal foxes include habitat loss and degradation, parasites, pathogens, harassment and roadkill. Another serious threat is the disease that this fox often faces, such as canine distemper virus and rabies. People also hunt them for fur, sport, and body parts to use in traditional medicine.

South African Fox

Here you are looking at a real fox, which is also the smallest species in South Africa. The most charming thing about them is those big pointy ears and the expression on their faces. Cape foxes have dark coloration around their mouths and also have white patches on their cheeks. As for the fur, it is gray-silver, while the head and forelimbs are reddish with black spots on the hindquarters. These foxes are remarkably agile, and their fluffy tails act as a counterbalance when they dodge and weave. In addition to being excellent runners, South African foxes are active diggers, but they also live in burrows abandoned by other animals. They live in underground burrows, dense thickets or depressions.

South African foxes inhabit mostly open terrain, ranging from open grassland plains with scattered thickets to arid savannahs and semi-desert scrublands. Not unlike the rest of the adorable fox species on the list, this one is also omnivorous. South African foxes prey on insects, mice, and other small animals, but they also eat carrion and wild fruit. Adults are nocturnal, while puppies play outside their lairs during the day. Unlike Bengal foxes, South African foxes are not territorial, so their ranges tend to overlap. Although these foxes usually forage separately, sometimes they also share dens together. These foxes often die from diseases such as canine distemper and rabies, but roadkill and traps are also a cause of death.

Korsak or steppe fox

A charming face is one thing, but the silvery gray or yellowish fur that Korsak foxes have is quite another. The fox of this species has small teeth and a broad head. At the same time, they have hooked claws that they use to climb trees and dig shallow holes. The most amazing thing about these foxes is that they have excellent eyesight along with keen hearing and sense of smell. This helps them make it easier to spot both predators and prey in their areas. Korsaks are not territorial and they sometimes form packs and share dens with each other. These foxes use a high-pitched screech to warn other members of the group of potential danger, and they bark while hunting.

Steppe foxes adapt to life in arid regions and inhabit grassy steppes and semi-deserts. The diet of these carnivorous foxes consists of rodents such as ground squirrels, hamsters and voles. However, they also do not disdain to eat carcasses and fruits. The peculiarity of these foxes is that they are able to survive for a long time without food. Due to the lack of water in their native habitat, corsacs are adapted to extracting moisture from the food they eat. One of their main threats, apart from large birds and wolves, are humans who prey on them for their fur.

Fenech

When it comes to the most adorable fox species, the fennec fox should be on the list. The fennec fox has large ears with a tiny and pointed muzzle, which is the perfect definition of fox cuteness. Huge ears are not on display, these foxes have an extraordinary hearing that allows them to find even underground prey. At the same time, their ears also help dissipate excess body heat on hot days. In addition, fennec foxes have thick fur that helps keep them warm on cold desert nights. The soles are also covered in thick fur, so they can walk without burning those tiny, adorable feet. Small but strong, the fennec fox lives in arid desert environments as well as in the most remote areas.

In fact, stable sand dunes are their ideal habitat, which is why they are also common throughout the Sahara. Fenech is the only predatory animal in the Sahara desert that can live for a long time without water. Their kidneys are specially adapted to conserve water when receiving moisture from the food they eat. You can find them in the sandy deserts and semi-deserts of North Africa. These smallest foxes in the world are mostly carnivorous and they feed on birds, eggs, insects, lizards, snails, etc. Fenechs live in small groups of up to 10 individuals and mark their territory with urine. Unfortunately, their population is at risk due to habitat loss, hunting, and traps for exhibition or sale.

Gray Fox

As the name suggests, this adorable fox species has a silvery gray color on its back and muzzle. In addition, the chest, legs, and throat are more reddish-white in color. The long bushy tail of the gray fox has a black stripe along the top with a black tip. Another distinguishing feature is a thin black stripe that runs from the outer corner of each eye to the head. Their uniqueness is that they are more like cats despite the fact that they are foxes. They have cat-like paws with retractable front claws, long, sensitive whiskers, and even elliptical pupils for night vision. These foxes have strong, hooked claws that they use to climb trees to escape predators, search for prey, or sleep. However, their permanent dwellings are lairs in old hollow logs or trees in caves, boulder piles or mine shafts.

Gray foxes prefer mountain ranges and rocky canyons, but you can also find them in grasslands, open desert, and wooded areas. Their range extends from southern Canada, Mexico and the United States to Central America and parts of South America. In their habitat, they feed on a wide variety of foods such as birds, eggs, fruits, insects, small mammals, etc. This is one of the few fox species that raids people’s garbage cans in search of food. While eating, they do not chew food, but tear it into small pieces and swallow it whole. These animals are very vocal and they can use sounds like barking, meowing and screaming to alert and find each other. Their main predators are bobcats, cougars, coyotes, hawks, owls, and humans, who kill them for their fur.

Island fox

Here you are looking at a descendant of the mainland gray fox and it is native to the Channel Islands. These foxes are gray on the back with rusty coloration on the sides and white on the underside. As for their faces, they have characteristic black, white and reddish patterns. Island foxes are smaller than their ancestors and are among the smallest foxes in the world. Despite being tiny, these animals are territorial and use a few drops of urine to mark their territories. If there are other island foxes nearby, they use their body posture and facial expression to show signs of dominance. As a rule, they are docile and not afraid of people, so people can also tame them.

Island foxes only live on 6 of the 8 Channel Islands off the coast of Southern California, you can’t find them anywhere else. Each island has different subspecies with different genetic and physical appearances. For example, San Miguel Island foxes have longer noses and shorter tails than other island foxes. At the same time, their diet also differs depending on the diversity of each island. Thus, these foxes feed on fruits, insects, and marine invertebrates such as crabs and more. On the islands, their habitats include riparian scrub, oak forests, scrublands, or wooded areas. These foxes are active during the day with peaks at dusk and dawn and have no natural predators.

American Fox

This is the smallest representative of the canine family in North America, the only one of its kind. Their color ranges from gray to yellowish, and they have exceptionally large ears that are held close together on their heads. The back of the ears is dark in color while the inner ears and underside are lighter in color. At the same time, there are characteristic dark spots on each side of the nose and at the end of the tail. The combination of colors and appearance makes them one of the most adorable fox species in the family. Speaking of families, foxes live in underground burrows in pairs or small groups, but they feed alone.

You can find them in central and northern Mexico in many parts of the United States. American foxes live primarily in dry regions such as desert scrub and grasslands, as well as agricultural and urban areas. Because they live in hot areas, their large ears also help them with thermoregulation as well as hunting. These foxes are carnivores and their main food is rabbits and rodents, but they also eat fruit when meat is scarce. Along with this, they scavenge and eat ground birds, large insects, lizards, and snakes. While most of the foxes on the list are monogamous, this one is polygyny, meaning that one male mates with multiple females. Their main threats today are habitat loss for agriculture, degradation and fragmentation.

Marble Fox

The uniqueness of this adorable fox species is that it is not a natural species. People have bred marble foxes from red and silver foxes, and their other names are arctic marbled fox and Canadian marbled fox. Marbled foxes are simply magnificent with their thick white fur with delicate black, gray or brown streaks. The appearance of their fur is reminiscent of stone marble, and they look very cute. Their appearance is one of a kind. In addition to color, marble foxes have short legs, short muzzles and small, rounded ears with sharp hearing. Even with short legs, they can cover long distances both on land and on sea ice, as they are very agile.

Marble foxes are one of the popular exotic pets in the United States and they look like cats. Pet owners can communicate with and train them, although foxes can be more difficult than cats and dogs. In addition, marbled foxes are also very intelligent. These foxes eat fruits, poultry, red meat, vegetables, and even some dog food. In the wild, marbled foxes are both hunters and scavengers with the help of their senses of hearing and smell. Their senses are so precise that they can even detect small animals that are active under the snow.

Red fox

This is the fox you often see in cartoons and movies, and it is also one of the adorable fox species. The red fox has red fur on the muzzle, back, flanks, and tails, while the chin, throat, and belly are greyish white. As for the legs, they are black in color, while the large and pointed ears have black tips. One of their most notable characteristics is definitely their fluffy, white-tipped tail. These foxes are lonely and it is easy for them to run and hide from people. They only come together during the breeding season in winter to mate and raise young. They can jump over high fences and swim.

Common foxes live in bushy fields, open areas in forests, and wetlands. These foxes feed on amphibians, birds, and fruits, but their favorite foods are rabbits and rodents. They are amazing hunters thanks to their excellent hearing, which allows them to find even rodents digging underground. These foxes are constantly hunting for food, even when they are not hungry, because they can save it for future use. These foxes have also been known to steal food from farms or garbage cans in rural or suburban areas. Common foxes are famous for their cunning and intelligence due to their ability to find food even in winter.
