A special home: a training center for children with autism was opened in Tyumen
Society
Olga Nikitina
February 18, 2020, 16:57
And it all started with a three-room student apartment on Komsomolskaya Street. Dozens of special children received everyday skills there.
A training center for children with mental disabilities has opened in Tyumen. The organizers and parents have been waiting for this moment for a long time, and finally there is a permanent place where teenagers can receive rehabilitation under the program “Teach me how to live”.
Masha cooks scrambled eggs
And it all started with a three-room student apartment on Komsomolskaya Street, which was opened in September 2018. Dozens of special children received everyday skills there. One of the old-timers is a 20-year-old Masha Penkina from Michurino. Masha is a “difficult” child, she has a bunch of serious diagnoses and autistic traits. Mom Natalya said that after the training, her daughter learned how to cook simple dishes and just control herself.
“Now you see her at her best. Usually she destroys and breaks everything. But thanks to the girls, we got hope,” said Natalia Penkina. A graduate of the training apartment, Masha, first came to the new training center and quickly got used to it. The girl happily showed the guests of the center her communication skills and even made scrambled eggs.
The premises for the new center of the organization “Open the World to Me” were allocated thanks to the regional authorities. It is located in the center of the city, it is convenient to drive and park here. The center has its own porch with a sign, and inside it is cozy and bright. Until recently, devastation reigned here – and literally in three months they made repairs, equipped the rooms with everything necessary – and classes began.
The government of the Tyumen region allocated one and a half million to equip the center, a presidential grant and funds from philanthropists also went here. During the repair, a lot of things had to be changed, the process became more expensive, so the help of the business was needed. About 20 business structures helped, not always large, but very responsive. A lot of things were donated to the center, for example, training panels and other equipment for classes.
Classes have already started at the center. Now there are six children on the course every day. Within the framework of a complex module, children learn a little of everything in three months – to cook, make tea, shop, communicate. Until the end of the school year, 25 children will pass through the training center. For families and children, it’s all free. They have been working on this principle for many years. The oldest of the guys is now 21 years old. However, there is no need to be surprised.
“Children with a mental disability at the age of 21 are children, they do not possess themselves and basic skills. Parents, perhaps, have already given up on them. And here, in the process, thanks to technologies with proven effectiveness, the child has success, ”said the Deputy Head of TRANBO Open the World to Me Valeria Matvienko .
Step by step
The opening of the center was attended by guests and friends who played an important role in supporting the project — deputy of the Tyumen Regional Duma Olga Shvetsova , Director of the Department of Social Development of the Tyumen Region Olga Kuznechevsky , Chairman3 of the Tyumen Public Chamber1 Gennady Chebotarev and Commissioner for Children’s Rights in the region Andrey Stepanov . For them, the head of TRANBO “Open the world to me” Margarita Suvorova gave a tour of the new center.
The guests were shown the “kitchen” – this is how you can characterize the largest room in the center. It has everything you need to get basic self-service skills in everyday life. There is a refrigerator with food, a kitchen set with utensils, a stove, a dining table, and a kettle. For work, special technologies are used – special stickers, on which, for example, the contents of a locker are drawn, or the procedure is outlined.
“On Friday, the guys with tutors decide what they will cook. On Monday, they go to the store with a list of products. Tuesday is cooking. On Wednesday, everyone works with methodologists on manuals and cards. On Thursday they clean up, learn to wash, vacuum, wipe the floors. Friday is leisure day. This is also an important point – what to do if you have free time. The guys choose, plan, search the Internet for tickets and information. We have such a closed cycle,” said Margarita Suvorova, head of TRANBO Open the World to Me.
So, step by step, a big world opens up for children who until recently could have simply been cut off from society.
Now the training goes on continuously, children come every day. In the next three months, a different training structure is planned – the guys will go a couple of times a week and study in the chosen areas: cooking, communication or behavior in public places. “We will take the guys for short courses, the request is very high. Many children already know how to do something, and they don’t have to go through everything,” says Margarita Suvorova.
Tell us about your plans
The training center has a lot of plans. A coffee machine is about to be installed here, and children will be able to learn the skills of a barista and a waiter. This is included in the career guidance program for children with mental disabilities. A play cafe will be equipped in the kitchen, tables will be set up so that the guys know what it means to “work in a coffee shop”. “This is a modern and interesting direction in the career guidance of our children,” said Valeria Matvienko.
Also, the center really wants to conduct adapted physical education classes with individual support – this is really lacking for the guys. There is already a small gym, benefactors helped to purchase equipment. Two tutors have the education of exercise therapy teachers – so it would be a sin not to use this potential.
And since September, it is planned to conduct courses on early family assistance here – they can take 10-12 families. “Of course, we want to take babies. The sooner work begins to correct their behavior, the easier it will be for both them and their parents in the future. There are those who want to practice,” said Margarita Suvorova. Both Margarita and Valeria know firsthand how important it is to start exercising as early as possible: only thanks to constant, regular classes and serious efforts, they managed to achieve success in the rehabilitation of their children.
Tyumen children with mental disabilities are looking forward to summer and a trip to a summer camp. True, it will be necessary to seriously prepare for it – both the guys themselves and the tutors. It’s no joke – special children are without parents for five days! During the summer, 40 children will go to nature.
Reveal the World to Me puts a lot of effort into caring for kids who many don’t understand and don’t want to tolerate their special needs. And the secret of the aspirations of Margarita, Valeria and their associates is tearfully simple: “Our children want to be like everyone else. Just to go to school and kindergarten, to go to camp.”
According to the Department of Social Development, about 400 children with autism spectrum disorders live in the Tyumen region, about 250 of them live in Tyumen.
