N.Y. law firms raise starting salaries to $215,000 as lawyer pay race continues

  • Summary
  • Law firms
  • Milbank, Cadwalader to hike associate salaries by $10,000 or $20,000, depending on seniority
  • Pay hike comes seven months after major U.S. law firms raised starting salaries past $200,000

(Reuters) – Large U.S. law firms may be poised for yet another round of associate pay raises, with New York-based firm Milbank on Thursday increasing annual salaries by as much as $20,000 depending on seniority.

Within hours, rival New York firm Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft said it would match the new Milbank salaries.

Both firms said first-year associates will see their base pay rise from $205,000 to $215,000, while eighth-year associates will see their pay jump from $365,000 to $385,000.

Milbank chairman Scott Edelman said the firm is coming off a record year of revenue and profits, though he declined to give specifics. The firm and its employees are also experiencing the same rise in inflation as the rest of the country, he said.

“A dollar doesn’t go as far as it did last year,” Edelman said. U.S. consumer prices increased in December, contributing to the largest annual inflation growth in nearly four decades.

Cadwalader managing partner Pat Quinn in a statement said the firm is committed to paying its lawyers “at the top of market.”

Lawyer pay at the largest U.S. law firms has ballooned over the past year, thanks to both salary increases and bonuses. Many firms have struggled to keep up with client demand for M&A work and other services, leading to a war for talent.

“We’re always focused on recruiting,” Edelman said in an interview. “Compensation is one piece of that package and puzzle.”

Seven months ago, a series of major U.S. law firms said they were increasing associate pay, with first-years seeing their base pay rise past $200,000. That wave of pay increases was also kicked off by Milbank, with Cadwalader following in quick succession, and a similar cascade of raises now appears likely.

Edelman said he would not be surprised if Milbank’s move triggers other firms to follow suit.

The Milbank and Cadwalader pay increases are retroactive to Jan. 1. Milbank said they will apply to the firm’s associates in the United States, London, Asia and Sao Paulo. Cadwalader said they apply to attorneys in good standing.

How much do lawyers earn: US lawyer salary

Lawyers are the most respected people in the modern world, and for good reason: they are very disciplined. Most parents send their children to law school in the hope that they will become lawyers. On the other hand, some children prefer to study law on their own because of the prestige of the profession.

One might wonder if there is any other reason for this surge of interest in this field than the obvious ones. Perhaps if you knew how much lawyers earn, you would be interested too. nine0003

In this post, we discussed how much lawyers earn per week, month and hour, not just per year. So, join us as we begin.

Who is a lawyer and what does he do?

Before we get straight into how much lawyers earn, let’s first discuss what their job is.

Lawyers are also known as solicitors. These are people who graduated from law school, passed the bar exam in their state, and are now practicing law. They advise their clients on legal matters and represent them in court and other legal proceedings. nine0003

Lawyers represent a wide range of clients. They may also work as private attorneys, representing and advising individuals, businesses and organizations. Some lawyers work for the government as prosecutors, prosecuting people and organizations that break the law. They may also work as public defenders, representing people who cannot afford a lawyer.

They also serve as your legal advisor and represent you in court. They will help you with legal disputes, lawsuits, appeals, wills, contracts and other legal matters. nine0003

Given the versatility of their job description, it should come as no surprise how much lawyers earn.

How long does it take to become a lawyer?

The demand for the services of lawyers and judges in the United States is extremely high, these professions have been at the top of the lists of in-demand professions for many years.

Moreover, the competition between specialists is not so great – studying to be a lawyer is expensive, not everyone can afford to get the coveted diploma. Getting into a prestigious university for this position is also not easy.

The profession of a judge is considered one of the most difficult, so judges’ salaries are quite high. The head of the Supreme Court receives about 250 thousand dollars a year, about 20 thousand dollars a month. nine0003

An ordinary judge earns about $150,000 a year, and an employee of the Judicial District or Court of Appeal may receive up to $200,000. The amount of salary depends on the instance, but in any case, the salary will be rather big.

If the income of judges depends on the place of work, then the salary of lawyers depends on experience. The more experience, the higher the salary. A novice lawyer can receive about 40 thousand dollars a year, a very meager amount by American standards comes out a month. nine0003

But just after a few years of work, the rate may double. Experienced lawyers in prestigious companies can receive about 180 thousand dollars a year.

In the US, lawyers have a certain specialization: criminal, economic, civil, immigration issues, and so on. There is even a separate category where specialists deal only with compensation for injuries and injuries, in their jurisdiction – the protection of persons injured in an accident or injured at work.
