Born in 1835 in Florida, Missouri. He spent his childhood in the town of Hannibal on the Mississippi. He was an apprentice compositor and later published a newspaper with his brother in Hannibal, then in Mescatine and Keokuk, Iowa. In 1857 he became a pilot’s apprentice, realizing his childhood dream of “knowing the river”, in April 1859g. received the rights of a pilot.

In 1861 he moved to his brother in Nevada, spent almost a year as a prospector in the silver mines. Having written several humoresques for the Territorial Enterprise newspaper in Virginia City, in August 1862 he received an invitation to become its employee. For a pseudonym, he took the expression of lotovs on the Mississippi, who called out “Measure 2”, which meant sufficient depth for safe navigation.

In May 1864, Twain left for San Francisco, worked for two years in Californian newspapers, including as a correspondent for the Californian Union in the Hawaiian Islands. In 1871 he moved to Hartford (Connecticut), where he lived for 20 years – his happiest years. In 1884 he founded a publishing firm.

Twain came to literature late. At the age of 27 he became a professional journalist, at the age of 34 he published his first book. The early publications are interesting mainly as evidence of a good knowledge of the gruff humor of the American hinterland.

In 1872, the autobiographical book “The Hardened” was published – about the people and customs of the Wild West. Three years later, Twain published a collection of his best stories – “Old and New Essays”, after which his popularity increased dramatically. In 1876 he published The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, and the phenomenal success of the book led to the writing of a sequel called The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.

Between these novels, Twain released another autobiographical book, Life on the Mississippi. He was fond of the history of the European Middle Ages, wrote the story “The Prince and the Pauper”, then the novel “A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court”. In 1895 he traveled around the world, visiting Australia, New Zealand, Ceylon, India and South Africa with lectures.

On November 30, 1835, American journalist, teacher and writer Mark Twain was born in Florida. The biography of the writer was full of events that became part of his works. As a gifted storyteller, excellent humorist and quick-tempered moralist, he transcended social restrictions and became a popular public figure in his country.

Young years

Samuel Lenghorne Clemens is Mark Twain’s real name. He was the sixth child of John Marshall and Jane, but was born two months premature and was not in excellent health for the first 10 years of his life. He later used his childhood memories of the treatment, mischief and condescension of adults in his writings.

The writer believed that he inherited his unique sense of humor from his mother, since his father was a serious person and rarely showed affection. Perhaps his temperament was spoiled by the financial trouble associated with a series of bankruptcies. It was these troubles that forced the family in 1839d. move to the port city of Hannibal on the Mississippi River.

Although Mark Twain’s birthplace is far from here, the local way of life is described with warmth and tenderness in Old Times on the Mississippi (1875). Watching noisy loaders, elegant travelers, stern sailors, the boy imagined their life full of romance and exploits. Among his playmates was Tom Blankenship, a charming child from an impoverished family, whom the writer, many years later, brought out in the form of Huckleberry Finn. Moreover, it is in these places that the sights described in the novel about Tom Sawyer are located:

In his books, good childhood memories outweigh the disturbing realities. The writer’s sister Margaret died of a fever when he was not even four years old, and his brother Benjamin died three years later. At 19In 1947, his father died of pneumonia, and the family lived in poverty. Since that time, the boy had to earn a living, and the first profession of Mark Twain was printing. He became an apprentice printer and was able to continue his education. The writer was 13 years old, and his adolescence came to an end.

The vicissitudes of fate

Matured Samuel Clemens became a competent compositor, wrote articles and in 1851 acquired a weekly city newspaper. Then he first tried to sign a pseudonym. Before becoming Mark Twain, the writer went through many options. The publication was successfully carried out by the younger brother Henry, and the writer left his home in 1853 and went in search of fate.

For almost two decades, he was determined to see the world, explore his possibilities, and decisively changed his fields of activity. An inquisitive reader can find an approximate list of them presented in a humorous genre in the writer’s stories, and history has preserved interesting facts about his movements:

worked as a laborer;
was a compositor in St. Louis;
worked for a major New York print shop;
went from there to Philadelphia;
moved to Washington DC;
returned to New York.

Big cities opened up wider prospects than the provinces, and Clemens, not yet having literary ambitions, continues to publish letters and articles in his brother’s newspaper. In 1855, the family settled in Creokuk, Iowa, where his brother opened a printing press. Samuel joined the family business, but moved to Cincinnati a year later to work as a layout designer.

However, Clemens’ restless nature does not allow him to sit still. In 1857, he takes a ticket and, with the intention of making a fortune in South America, boards a steamer to New Orleans. River life unfolds new opportunities and for a decent fee, Captain Horatio Bixby agrees to take the future writer as an apprentice.

The captain had excellent piloting skills, and Sam showed remarkable abilities. The profession of a river pilot, by his own admission, was the most favorable of all mastered. A licensed specialist received a good salary, enjoyed universal respect, was absolutely free and self-sufficient.

The years spent on the rivers were eventful. Here he met his first love, Laura Wright, who was 8 years younger than him. Romantic courtship dissolved in misunderstanding, which did not prevent the image of the girl from retaining the halo of bright youthful love.

At the same time, Clemens employed his brother Henry, who was mortally wounded as a result of the boiler explosion. This incident was an accident, but Samuel blamed himself for the tragedy. Experience gained at work instilled in him qualities that are difficult to obtain elsewhere, and all the while he continued to write random articles in a satirical magazine.

Civil War Period

The Civil War between North and South that began in 1861 drastically reduced the amount of river traffic. After losing his job, Clemens joined a detachment of the militia of the southerners with the rank of second lieutenant. Unsuccessful skirmishes with regular units, constant retreat, physical and moral exhaustion led to the disintegration of the unit. The writer left the war and went to Nevada to work with his older brother Orion to work as his personal secretary.

The conflict divided not only the country, but also families. Unlike Sam, Orion was a staunch supporter of the Northern States and even participated in the election campaign of Abraham Lincoln. No information about disputes and misunderstandings has been preserved in the family archives, but the brothers could hardly remain indifferent to political preferences. After some time, Mark Twain turned from a staunch supporter of the South into its ardent opponent and condemned the ideology of slavery until the end of his days.

After the war, he manages to get a job as a newspaper reporter in Virginia City. The city was a hotbed of “prospector’s fever”, famous for breweries, distilleries, gambling, corruption and other entertainments. The editors of the publication willingly published funny essays about local realities, it was here that the transformation into a writer took place.

One day Twain heard a story about a jumping frog. At this time, the famous author Artemus Ward suggested that he write something for a collection of humorous essays, and the aspiring writer decided to turn to this story. It so happened that the book went to press before the manuscript was delivered, and it was published separately. The story of the famous jumping frog from Calaveras gained popularity, and the name of the author became famous.

Origin of pseudonym

It is believed that for the first time a well-known pseudonym was used as a signature for letters in February 1863. The choice of literary name was not accidental. In the 19th century, there were no lighthouses on the flat rivers of America, nor permanent marks indicating the depths. The pilot had to know all the fairways perfectly and install temporary buoys.

To do this, with a special pole and a rope from a boat, he measured the water column from the surface to the bottom. “Mark Twain” means that the depth is two fathoms. That is how much the ship needs for a safe passage, and these two words were shouted out by the pilot to his assistant. The writer explained this term in one of his publications in 1875.

Literary maturity

In subsequent years, Mark Twain continued to work for newspapers, participates in public speaking and travels a lot with lectures, and after the publication of his book of essays, as a correspondent on a steamer, he goes to Europe. Based on the materials of this voyage, the book “Simples Abroad” (1869) is published.

The trip was not only a creative success, but also a meeting with a young man named Charlie Langdon, who later introduced the writer to his sister Olivia, whose portrait he always carried with him. The novel took place mainly by correspondence and ended with a wedding. A gift from a rich father-in-law was a share in one of the newspapers and a nice house in Buffalo.

Brought up in a petty-bourgeois spirit, Mrs. Clemens zealously undertook the re-education of her husband and even took on the role of censor of his works. Although for many years part of the manuscripts remained lying on the table, one should not exaggerate its influence on the writer’s work.

1871 marked the move to Hartford, Kentucky. Books sold well and revenues rose steadily. The writer plunged into the life of the American bourgeois intelligentsia. During this period, he writes about the adventures of Tom Sawyer, appealing to young and old readers. The work impresses with its genuine sincerity and a whole range of experiences close to any age:

pranks of schoolchildren;
funny antics;
comic courtship of Becky Thatcher;
murder mystery;
ridiculous superstitions.

Such a wonderful character as Huck Finn must have his own story, Mark Twain considered. The book was written over a long period of time and was not published until 1885. During this period, the author worked on other projects, only periodically returning to the manuscript. In 1881, “The Prince and the Pauper” comes out from under his pen, and a little later “A Yankee in King Arthur’s Court”.

After 1890, the streak of bad luck stretched : the publishing house could hardly make ends meet, rheumatic pains in the right hand were tormented, debts were growing. The family had to move to a cheaper place to live in Europe. After returning to his homeland, the writer publishes Wilson’s Tragedy of the Coot (1894) and the novel Personal Memoirs of Joan of Arc (1896).

In subsequent years, many of his works were published anonymously, and some he banned from publication until his own death. At 1895 Twain goes on a lecture tour of North America, and then around the world. This trip allowed to improve the financial situation and restore the reputation.

The last years of Clemens are described by biographers as a time of “bad mood”.
