Principal 1: Early childhood education has a significant impact on a child’s success in elementary, secondary and post-secondary education.

Outside of the home, early childhood education programs are the first step to help children develop the skills they need to succeed in school and in life. A study by Stanford University economist Victor Fuchs found that readiness to learn in kindergarten was the most important determinant for mathematical achievement in school. The qualities that are provided in preschool education, such as social confidence, emotional maturity, language richness and moral awareness are the key to unlocking this eagerness to learn.

When Lowell Milken co-founded Knowledge Universe in 1997, it was clear that education at the preschool level and at every level, needed to get better faster. Introduction

This is an appreciative review of several streams of argument in a study by
Erik Davis (TechGnosis:
myth, magic and mysticism in the age of information
.
1998/2004). The themes selected here are used as a means of developing
points relevant to the main paper (Towards
an Astrophysics of the Knowledge Universe: from astronautics to noonautics?
).

TechGnosis ranges rather promiscuously across the disciplinary boundaries
that usually chop up the world of thought, drawing the reader into a fluctuating
play network of polarities and hidden networks. The connections it draws are
many: between myth and science, transcendent intuition and technological control,
the virtual worlds we imagine and the real world we cannot escape. It is a
dreambook of the technological unconscious. p. 8-9

The spiritual imagination seizes information technology for its own purposes.
In this sense, technologies of communication are always, at least potentially,
technologies of the sacred, simply because the ideas and experiences of the
sacred have always informed human communication. p 11

As with all archetypes, the mystic patterns associated with gnosis are ambiguous,
multivalent, and contradictory. Todays technognostics find themselves, consciously
or not, surrounded by a complex set of ideas and images: transcendence through
technology, a thirst for the ecstasy of information, adrive to engineer and
perfect the incorporeal spark of the self…. Techgnosis is the esoteric side
of the postwar world’s new “information self’. p. 122

to construct meaningful frameworks for their lives, worldviews that actually
deepen their willingness and ability to face the strangeness of our days.”

“The moment we invent a significant new device for communication — talking
drums, papyrus scrolls, printed books, crystal sets, computers, pagers — we
partially reconstruct the self and its world, creating new opportunities (and
new traps) for thought, perception, and social experience. …More than any
other invention, information technology transcends its status asa thing, simply
because it allows for the incorporeal encoding and transmission of mind and
meaning…. By creating a new interface between the self, the other, and the
world beyond. They form the building blocks, and in even in some sense the
foundaion, for what we now increasingly think of as “the social construction
of reality”. p 6-7

New technologies of perception and communication open up new spaces, and these
spaces are always mapped, on one level or another, through the imagination…
New technologies of perception thus unfold a new world, or at least new dimensions
of universal nature. p 90-91

TechGnosis seeks to “provide some imaginal maps and mystical scorecards for
the metaverse that is now swallowing up so many of us” p, 6 .

Hermetic scholars or occult Traditionalists would write off any similarities
between Gnostic religion and contemporary technoculture as, at best, the latter’s
demonic and infantile parody of the former. But the authenticity of spiritual
ideas and religious experiences does not rerally concern me here; rather I
am attempting to understand the often unconscious metaphysics of information
culture by looking at it through the archetypal lens of religious and mystic
myth. Inauthentic or not, these patterns of thought and experience have played
and continue to play a role in how humans relate to technology…. Gnosticism
is hardly the only passageway into the storehouse of archetypes lurking beneath
the secular mask of information, but it underscores the mataphysical patterns
and Promethean fire that the new category of reality unleashed into the postwar
mind. p 97-99

Argument

*** Any such “writing off” process, by whatever school of thought
with reference to another, is a charactristic dynamic of the knowledge universe
and therefore calls for a self-reflexive approach to its understanding — or
to the denial of the need for such.

Long before the development of the virtual world Second
Life
, Erik Davis (1998) argued succinctly: (p. 246-7):

Tolkien’s work proved the point he himself made in his essay On Fairy
Stories
. A great author of fantasy “makes a econdary World which
your mind can enter. Inside it, what he relates is ‘true’: it accords with
the laws of that world. You therefore believe it, while you are, as it
were, inside.” Like designers of virtual worlds today, Tolkien knew
that successful secondary worlds were not wild flights of fancy, but products
of creative method and potent technology — what Tolkien described as an “elvish
craft”
capable of suspending the disbelief of “both designer and spectator.

Golden Bough — Erik Davis cites Bruno Latour (We Have Never Been Modern.
Harvard University Press, 1993)

premodern and indigneous people wove everything, whether nature or culture,
into an immense collective network of mind and matter that he terms the anthropological
matrix. Elements thereof are best understood as “hybrids”, that
he calls
“speaking things”, both natural and cultural, real and imagined,
subject and object (TechGnosis, p 15)

modernity constructs a major conceptual separation between nature and culture
that Latour names the Great Divide — “a sky-high conceptual wall separating
the now blind and mute world of nature from the endlessly mutable world of
culture and its merely human meanings” (p 47). The hybrid characteristic
of subject/objects is then denied resulting in a failure to recognize their
entanglement across the entire matrix of reality. As Davis notes:

By denying hybrids, modern Europe paradoxically wound up cranking them out
at an outstanding rate: new technologies, new scientific and cultural perspectives,
new sociopolitical and economic arrangements. The West drastically reconstructed
“the world” without acknowledging the systemic effects that its creative
activities had on the interdependent fabric of society

Davis highlights the curious role that the alpahabetized form of information
(notably through revealed scriptures) then played in engendering a
world beyond the apparent world of nature:

  • Plato’s view that another world of pure intelligible forms exists beyond the
    realm of temporal flux and gross matter as perceived by the senses
  • Davd Abram’s observation that: “The letters, and the written words that
    they represent, are not subject to the flux of growth and decay, to the perturbations
    and cyckical chaqnges common to other visible things; they seem to hover,
    as it were, in another, strangely timeless dimension” p 34
  • Marshall McLuhan: “The alphabety shattered the charmed circle and
    resonating magic of the tribal world, exploding man into an agglomeration
    of specialised and psychically impoverished individuals or units, functioning
    in a world of linear time and Euclidean space” p 35

For Plato, as for the Neoplatonist mystics that followed him, the goal of
of the philosopher was to transcend the gravitational tug of the body in order
to launch what the scholar Ioan Couliano calls the “platonic space shuttle”.
In this visionary flight, the rational spark ascends to the heavens where it
glimpses its own divinity amidst the world of the forms — a transcendental
twist on the old shamanic plunge into thje belly of the earth…. Gazing with
homesick longong at the heavens, many seekers sought gnostic escape, the ascetic
mastery of the body, or an otherworldly journey into the realms of apocalyptic
vision. p. 36

But the real action may lie in the feedback loops that cross this rather mysterious
divide. p 41

In this respect, Davis notes the role of alchemy in framing a “propulsive
ambiguity” based on a “tremednous emphasis on polarity, on the dynamic, erotic,
and highly combustible interaction — or conjunctio — of contrary elements
and states of being” p. 45

It might be argued that the extremely poorly managed challenges of contemporary
life derive from the crudity of the “ambiguity technology”, especially in relation
to its “propulsive” potential. This is exemplified by the “binary logic” applied
to the challenge of terrorism — framed as an exercise in “positive thinking”
of righteous fundamentalists in response to the “negativity” of fanatics. A
“combustible interaction” indeed, but an exercise whose crude quality of
thinking should be shamed by lessons from the advances in the technology of
the combustion engine over the past century.

Davis cites Ioan Couliano in arguing that science has simply substituted itself
for a part of the operational agenda defined by magic, expanding iuts dreams
and goals by means of technology. Magic is effectively the unconscious of technology
— its arational spell. p 47-48

Davis explores the ttransmutation in society of electricity into information.
Introducing a deliberately paradoxical term, he argues for an “electromagnetic
imaginary” to recognize the need to “stitch together, however provisionally,
the world we feel with the world we know”. He quotes Michel Serre: “The only
pure myth is the idea of a science devoid of all myth”. 52

Electricity, in particular, would carry three different aspects of the alchemical
imagination into the modern world: the fascination with the vitality of bodies,
the desire to spiritualize material form, and the millennarian drive to transmute
the energies of earth into the divine realization of human dreams. p 53

The paradigm of information began to invade humanist discourse [in the 1950s
and 1960s]…. All of this set information on a collision course with meaning
— that signifiying magic that, for all the analyses of linguistis, sociologists,
and cognitive scientists, remains one of the trickiest, most seductive, and
most consternating glyphs in the human equation…. its universal application
saps the marrow from the rich lifeworld of meanings that humans actually inhabit…
Our society has come to place an enormous value on information even though
information itself can tell us nothing about value. pp. 101-2

The singular self-knowledge sought by the Gnostic…reveal the self to belong
to a transcendent order estranged from the mundane world… the urge to overcome
the natgural limits of body through a divinized or omniscient mind remains
one of the most characteristic “gnostic” traits, one that plays itself out
today in strongly technocultural terms. p 119-120

Instead of accepting the Zodiac’s rule of fate, the Gnostics insisted on the
mind;s ability to overcome such strictures through psychological depth, intelligence
and mystical will. p 121

Extropians [brain-boosting transhumanists and cyber-libertarians] are meticulously
planning for the day when technology will form the ultimate escape hatch, and
machines will free us forever from the clutches of the earth, the body, and
earth itself….. On the one side lies our half-assed perceptual, emotional
and logical wetware; on the other lies the conceptual perfection of diesmbodied
intelligence, an informational array of codes, rules and algorithms they identify
with the potentially immortal self and its infinite computational abilities. ..
Curiously the imagery of the cyborg, which undergirds many Extropian speculations,
is bound up from the beginning with extraterrestrial flight 141-152

Space technologies do not just materialize the offworld yearnings of those
desperate to flee the grave fate of earthly life. They also literalize the
cosmic homesickness that vibrates in so many human hearts, a longing for a
transcendental level of authenticity, vision, and being reflected in the heavens.
Many thoughtful moderns, religious and not, believe that this sense of estrangement
cannot really be assuaged; instead one gains authenticity by throwing oneself
into the existential conditions of real life, with all its limitations, sufferings
and insecurity. pp. 153

Deep ecologists and New
Agers reject offworld longings in favour of “an almost pagan identification
with nautre and its healing powers” p. 154

For as the engines of civilization pulled as farther and farther away from
the unpredictable and often spiteful dance of nature, we withdrew from the
animistic imagination that once immersed us in a living network of material
forces and riling intelligences. … And so today, now that we have technologized
our environment and isolated the self withoin a scientific frame of mind, we
no logner turn to naturte to echo our state. Now we cath our reflections, even
our spirits, in the movements and mentations of machines…. The machine thus
comes to serve as an interactive mirror, an ambiguous Other we both recognize
ourselves in and measure ourselves against. p 155-9

The universe within the universe: reflections on the structure of existence and the scale of the cosmos

When we realize our place in the infinity of light years and successive epochs, when we comprehend the beauty, subtlety and complexity of life, we are seized with a delight in which pride is combined with humility – is this not soaring of the spirit! — Carl Sagan, A World Full of Demons: Science is Like a Candle in the Dark. As I explored the universe, I experienced similar spiritual moments described by Sagan as my understanding of connections to the wider world was strengthened. Like, for example, when I first learned that I was literally composed of the ashes of stars – that the atoms of my body were spread through the infinite ether thanks to supernovae. On another occasion, I felt this sublime feeling when I first saw this image. A neuron in the brain is comparable to clusters of galaxies and the threads connecting them from ordinary and dark matter. Their similarity is immediately visible. What does this mean? The whole universe can exist in your head. But the similarity of images can also be an example of apothenia – the perception of similarity where there is none. After all, how can these two systems be similar, given the huge difference in their scale?

a measurement that evaluates their similarity? This is exactly what Franco Vazza (an astrophysicist from the University of Bologna) and Alberto Feletti (a neurosurgeon from the University of Verona) decided to do when they combined their scientific disciplines for publication in the journal Frontiers of Physics.

Intergalactic communication

The human brain is literally one of the most complex structures of the Universe, which in itself is the most complex structure. Your brain contains about 80 billion neurons, cells that process input from the senses and send signals to your body through the nervous system. Neurons are also connected in a network, and exchange information through axons and dendrites. In a typical network that forms a person like yours, there are about 100 trillion connections.

The universe is also networked. It seems to us that the cosmos is a collection of objects separated by huge sections of space, but this is not entirely true. The part of the Universe that we see through scientific instruments is called the “observable Universe”, and is 90 billion light-years in diameter. It contains hundreds of billions to several trillion galaxies. These galaxies, like our Milky Way, are made up of billions of stars, and in turn are grouped into galaxy clusters. Our Milky Way is part of the “local group” of galaxies, which also includes Andromeda, Triangulum and 50 other galaxies. They are all part of a larger group, the Virgo Supercluster. The space between groups and clusters is not empty – it contains threads of ordinary and dark matter stretching for millions of light years. In this sense, the Universe is a giant network of galaxy clusters, interconnected in much the same way as the neural networks of the brain. This network is called the space network.

A universe within a universe

The search for a quantifiable relationship between these two networks was born from a partnership between neuroscience and astrophysics. Using technologies and tools from both disciplines, Vazza and Feletti studied both networks looking for similarities that could not only be seen but also quantified. Are these networks comparable, and if so, what does this mean?

The researchers used sections of the human cerebral cortex 4 µm thick. This is the top layer of the brain responsible for processing language, information from the senses, thoughts, memory and consciousness. They were compared with “slices” of the universe 25 megaparsecs thick (1 parsec is equal to about 3.26 light years). The slices were obtained from a computer simulation of a section of space with a volume of a million cubic megaparsecs. As a result, areas of the brain and space were compared, the sizes of which differed by 27 orders of magnitude.

When studying sections, their similarity was not obvious at all scales. However, when the brain tissue was enlarged 40 times, the researchers began to notice similar structures. This increase gives distances of 0.01-1.6 mm in the brain tissue and 1-100 Mpc in the Universe. At this scale, the network of neurons begins to look like clusters of galaxies. Moreover, network similarity can be measured and compared objectively using two technologies. The first is the degree of network connectivity, which measures the length of connections and the connectivity of a given network. The radius of the center of the neuron, its nucleus, is much smaller compared to the length of the threads connecting it with other threads. The second method for objective comparison of networks is the clustering coefficient, which quantitatively describes the density of the structure immediately adjacent to each node of the network (a neuron or a cluster of galaxies) and compares this structure with a random point in the network. This allows you to compare the degree of organization of both networks.

Above is a reconstruction of the connections of three example networks (cosmic network, cerebellum and cerebral cortex). Below is a graph of the distribution of clustering coefficients and the degree of network connectivity.

How big is the universe

Applying these techniques on the scale chosen, Vazza and Feletti found a “remarkable” similarity between the brain and the universe. They also found that these networks are more similar to each other than to other biological or physical structures, such as tree branches, cloud formation dynamics, or water turbulence. The latter have a fractal structure. Mandelbrot magnification is a fractal pattern that looks the same regardless of scale. In contrast, the brain and the universe look very different at different scales

Researchers have noted two more interesting parallels between the brain and the cosmic network. The first is the proportions of their constituent parts. The brain is 77% water, and the cosmic network is about 73% dark energy. At the same time, water and dark energy are not parts of the network, but only “passive material” or passive energy. Perhaps the presence and proportions of passive material and energy are related to the characteristic features of network formation. The second interesting parallel is that the amount of data required to store models of the universe is comparable to the theoretical limit of the amount of information that the human brain can store. To simulate the evolution of the observable part of the Universe on the scales at which the presence of a cosmic network becomes obvious requires from 1 to 10 petabytes. The theoretical limit for the size of the human brain is estimated at 2.5 petabytes. Theoretically, a person could store in his brain data about the structure of the observable universe. Or vice versa, the cosmic network could theoretically store data about the life experience of a human being.

There are not only similarities, but also differences between the cosmic network and the brain. Sections for study were taken from the cerebral cortex, but the brain is not homogeneous. Its different parts have a different structure designed to perform different tasks. At the same time, a characteristic feature of the Universe is its homogeneity in all directions. Connections between the neurons of the brain serve to transmit information from the sense organs, and only energy and matter are transmitted through the connections of the parts of the Universe. Creative tasks at the lessons of natural history in IOSE technology on the theme “Universe”

At the lessons of natural history the purpose of my pedagogical activity is to develop the abilities of each child through the subject.

Last year I graduated the 11th graders and now I work with the 5th graders. Children came with initiative, like a sponge they absorb knowledge about the world in which they live, they have the skills of independent work with reference literature. They are interested in everything, and with them I rediscover this big world.

In the 5th grade I work on the IOSE technology. In the concept of an individually-oriented learning system, I personally like its openness to all other educational technologies and methodological techniques. In this technology, all methodological techniques that contribute to successful educational and cognitive activity can be used, regardless of the teaching technology that dominates in an educational institution.

With the help of ISSE technology, a child does not just receive a sum of knowledge, skills and abilities. He develops a diverse social experience of self-management in the course of educational activities, develops independence and the ability to self-organize,

tolerance for other people’s opinions, and sociability.

Developing individually oriented plans for each student, I pay great attention to creative tasks. The concept of creativity is very deep and diverse. Elements of creativity are manifested in any field of activity – in a game, in composing a fairy tale or a poem, in compiling a crossword, chainword, rebus, test; in creating a drawing, or preparing a message in the form of an abstract on a topic of interest. A creative task can be performed by any child in the class, an excellent student or a three-year student, regardless of how he studies. The fulfillment of these tasks is built on the principle of voluntariness.

In the creative work of students, such valuable human qualities as diligence, observation, creative imagination, love for poetry, interest in the subject are manifested.

The joy of success, even a small one, makes a child want to continue creative work. As a teacher, I always support the student, encourage and appreciate every creative work. The manifestation of students’ abilities during the performance of creative tasks increases their self-esteem, exalts children in the eyes of their classmates, and helps to develop their personality.

At the lessons of natural history, together with the children, we developed three rules for preparing short reports, abstracts, messages on any topic.

  • The first rule is called The Five Minute Rule. If a student is speaking, no one can interrupt him for 5 minutes.
  • Second rule: “I tell only what is interesting to me.”
  • Third rule: “I don’t read my report in full, I just look into it.”

All these rules help the child develop monologue speech, master the basics of oratory, and not be afraid to speak in front of an audience.

I give examples of creative tasks during the passage of the topic “Universe”. Creative tasks were given to students to complete at home. These are poems, fairy tales, tests created by students of the 5th grade.

The Earth lived in space. She was very beautiful and blue, but she had no friends. There was no one to play with and talk to. The earth was sad all the time and wept with small rains.

To know all the secrets of the universe, one must be equal to the universe. If, like science fiction writers, we imagine that a person is an instrument of cognition of the universe itself, one can dream up, imagine that a person evolves into a living cognizing form, with greater possibilities. For example, in a living planetary ocean of consciousness, as in Solaris. Or a person will create a self-replicating artificial intelligence, which will be limited only by the resources of the planet. Even if such forms of consciousness find a way to spread throughout the universe, they will still be limited by their nature in the accuracy of knowledge. The universe divides itself into cognizing and cognizable parts. In this process, one part is tense in relation to the other. This process may end when, eventually, all moving parts of the universe stop interacting. Then everything will become clear to the universe, all particles-waves will equally calmly, without tension, stand in their places.

Obtaining knowledge about how the Universe, galaxies, the Solar system, the Earth was formed is not only a need, but also a necessary condition for the further existence of a person in the modern world. Today, such a unique tool as space research technologies makes it possible to expand this knowledge.

Today’s video games are populated by characters interacting realistically with the player, and virtual reality simulators sometimes make it indistinguishable from the world outside the window.

And that’s enough to make a person paranoid.

In the fantastic film “The Matrix” this idea is formulated very clearly. People there are imprisoned in a virtual world, which they unconditionally perceive as real.

However, The Matrix is ​​not the first film to explore the phenomenon of the artificial universe. Suffice it to recall “Videodrome” by David Cronenberg (1982) or “Brazil” by Terry Gilliam (1985).

All these dystopias raise two questions: how do we know that we live in a virtual world, and does it really matter?

The version that we live inside a simulation has powerful supporters.

As the American entrepreneur Elon Musk stated in June 2016, the probability of this is “a billion to one”.

And Google’s AI CTO, Ray Kurzweil, suggests that perhaps “our entire universe is a science experiment by a junior high school student from another universe.”

Some physicists are also ready to consider this possibility. In April 2016, scientists took part in a discussion on this topic at the New York American Museum of Natural History.

None of these people claimed that in reality we are floating naked in a sticky liquid, studded with wires, like the heroes of The Matrix.

But there are at least two possible scenarios in which the universe around us could be artificial.

MIT cosmologist Alan Guth suggests that the universe may be real, but is also a laboratory experiment. According to his hypothesis, our world was created by some kind of superintelligence – just like biologists grow colonies of microorganisms.

In principle, there is nothing that would exclude the possibility of the creation of the universe as a result of an artificial Big Bang, Guth says.

The universe in which such an experiment would be carried out would remain intact. The new world would form in a separate space-time bubble, which would quickly separate from the mother universe and lose contact with it.

This scenario does not affect our lives in any way. Even if the Universe originated in a “test tube” of superintelligence, it is physically as real as if it had formed naturally.

But there is a second scenario that is of particular interest because it undermines the very foundations of our understanding of reality.

It is possible that our universe was created artificially. But by whom?

Musk and other supporters of this hypothesis argue that we are entirely simulated beings – just streams of information in some kind of giant computer, like video game characters.

Even our brain is a simulation that reacts to artificial stimuli.

In this scenario, there is no matrix from which one could get out: our whole life is a matrix, beyond which existence is simply impossible.

But why should we believe in such a convoluted version of our own existence?

The answer is very simple: humanity is already capable of simulating reality, and with the further development of technology, it will eventually be able to create a perfect simulation, inhabited by intelligent beings-agents, would perceive it as an absolutely real world.

We create computer simulations not only for games, but also for research purposes. Scientists simulate various interaction situations at various levels – from subatomic particles to human communities, galaxies and even universes.

For example, computer simulations of the complex behavior of animals help us understand how flocks and swarms form. Through simulations, we study the principles behind the formation of planets, stars, and galaxies.

We can also simulate human communities using relatively simple agents making choices based on certain rules.

Supercomputers are getting more powerful

Such programs model human cooperation, urban development, the functioning of traffic and the state economy, and many other processes.

As the processing power of computers grows, simulations become more complex. Elements of thinking are already being built into separate programs that imitate human behavior – as yet primitive.

Researchers believe that in the not so distant future, virtual agents will be able to make decisions based not on elementary logic from the “if … then …” category, but on simplified models of human consciousness.

Who can guarantee that soon we will not witness the creation of virtual beings endowed with consciousness? Advances in understanding the principles of the brain, as well as the vast computing resources that the development of quantum computing promises, are steadily bringing this moment closer.

If we ever reach this stage of technological development, we will be simultaneously running a huge number of simulations, the number of which will far exceed our only “real” world.

Is it really impossible, then, that some intelligent civilization somewhere in the universe has already reached this stage?

And if so, it would be logical to assume that we just live inside such a simulation, and not in a world in which virtual realities are created – after all, the probability of this is statistically much higher.

Scientific simulation of the origin of the universe

Philosopher Nick Bostrom of the University of Oxford breaks down this scenario into three possible scenarios:

creation of similar simulations;

(2) civilizations that have reached this level, for some reason, refuse to create such simulations;

(3) we are inside a similar simulation.

The question is which of these options seems most likely.

American astrophysicist George Smoot, Nobel laureate in physics, argues that there are no convincing reasons to believe in the first two options.

Undoubtedly, humanity is persistently creating problems for itself – suffice it to mention global warming, growing stocks of nuclear weapons and the threat of mass extinction of species. But these problems will not necessarily lead to the destruction of our civilization.

Are we all part of a computer simulation?

Moreover, there is no reason why it would be fundamentally impossible to create a very realistic simulation, the characters of which would believe that they live in the real world and are free in their actions.

And given how common Earth-like planets are in the Universe (one of which, recently discovered, is located relatively close to Earth), it would be the height of arrogance to assume that humanity is the most advanced civilization, notes Smoot.

How about option number two? Theoretically, humanity could refrain from conducting such simulations for ethical reasons – for example, considering it inhumane to artificially create creatures convinced that their world is real.

But even that seems unlikely, says Smoot. After all, one of the main reasons why we run our own simulations is our desire to learn more about our own reality. This can help us make the world a better place and possibly save lives.

So there will always be sufficient ethical justification for such experiments.

It looks like we’re left with only one option: we’re probably inside a simulation.

But all this is nothing more than speculation. Can they find conclusive evidence?

Many researchers believe that everything depends on the quality of the simulation. The most logical thing would be to try to find errors in the program – like those that betrayed the artificial nature of the “real world” in the movie “The Matrix”. For example, we might find contradictions in physical laws.

Or, as the late AI pioneer Marvin Minsky suggested, there could be inherent rounding errors in approximations.

We are already able to simulate entire groups of galaxies

For example, in the case when an event has several possible outcomes, the sum of the probabilities of their occurrence should be one. If this is not true, we can say that something is missing here.

However, according to some scientists, there are enough reasons to think that we are inside a simulation. For example, our universe looks like it was artificially constructed.

The values ​​of the fundamental physical constants are suspiciously ideal for the emergence of life in the Universe – one might get the impression that they were set intentionally.

Even small changes in these values ​​would cause the atoms to lose their stability or make stars impossible to form.

Cosmology still cannot convincingly explain this phenomenon. But one possible explanation has to do with the term “multiverse.”

What if there are many universes that came into being as a result of events similar to the Big Bang, but subject to different physical laws?

Randomly, some of these universes are ideal for the origin of life, and if we were not lucky enough to be in one of them, then we would not ask questions about the universe, because we simply would not exist.

However, the idea of ​​the existence of parallel universes is highly speculative. So there remains at least a theoretical possibility that our universe is actually a simulation, the parameters of which are specifically set by the creators to obtain the results they are interested in – the emergence of stars, galaxies and living beings.

Although such a possibility cannot be ruled out, such theorizing leads us in circles.

In the end, one can just as well assume that the parameters of the “real” Universe in which our creators live were artificially set by someone. In this case, accepting the postulate that we are inside a simulation does not explain the mystery of the values ​​of constant physical quantities.

Some experts, as evidence that something is wrong with the universe, point to very strange discoveries made by modern physics.

Is our universe just a collection of mathematical formulas?

Quantum mechanics, a branch of physics that operates with extremely small quantities, has given us a particularly large number of such discoveries. Thus, it turns out that both matter and energy have a granular structure.

Moreover, the “resolution” at which we can observe the Universe has its own minimum limit: if you try to observe smaller objects, they simply will not look “sharp” enough.

According to Smoot, these strange features of quantum physics could just be signs that we are living inside a simulation – just like when you try to view an image on a screen from a very close distance, it breaks up into individual pixels.

But this is a very rough analogy. Scientists are gradually coming to the conclusion that the “graininess” of the Universe at the quantum level may be the result of more fundamental laws that determine the limits of cognizable reality.

Another argument in favor of the virtuality of our world says that the Universe, as it seems to a number of scientists, is described by mathematical equations.

And some physicists go even further and claim that our reality is a set of mathematical formulas.

Cosmologist Max Tegmark of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology emphasizes that just such a result would be expected if the laws of physics were based on a computational algorithm.

However, this argument threatens to lead us into a vicious circle of reasoning.

To begin with, if a superintelligence decides to simulate its own “real” world, it is logical to assume that the physical principles underlying such a simulation will reflect those that operate in its own universe – after all, this is what we do.

In this case, the true explanation of the mathematical nature of our world would not be that it is a simulation, but that the “real” world of our creators is arranged in exactly the same way.

In addition, the simulation need not be based on mathematical rules. You can make it function in a random, chaotic way.

However, according to physicist James Gates of the University of Maryland, there is a stronger reason to believe that computer simulations are responsible for the laws of physics.

Gates studies matter at the level of quarks – subatomic particles that make up protons and neutrons in atomic nuclei. According to him, quarks obey rules that are somewhat reminiscent of computer codes that correct errors in data processing.

Is it possible?

Maybe so. But it is possible that such an interpretation of physical laws is only the most recent example of how humanity has interpreted the world around us from time immemorial, based on knowledge of the latest achievements of technological progress.

In the era of classical Newtonian mechanics, the universe was represented by a clockwork. And later, at the dawn of the computer era, DNA was considered as a kind of digital code storage with the function of storing and reading information.

Perhaps we just extrapolate our current technological passions to the laws of physics every time.

It seems to be very difficult, if not impossible, to find conclusive evidence that we are inside a simulation.

Unless there are many bugs in the code, it will be difficult to create a test whose results cannot be explained in some other, more rational way.

Even if our world is a simulation, says Smoot, we may never be able to find a clear confirmation of this – simply because such a task is beyond the power of our minds.

After all, one of the goals of simulation is to create characters that would function within the established rules, and not violate them intentionally.

However, there’s a bigger reason why we shouldn’t worry too much about being just lines of code.

Some physicists believe that this is how the real world is anyway.

The terminological apparatus used to describe quantum physics is increasingly beginning to resemble a dictionary of computer science and computer technology.

Some physicists suspect that, at a fundamental level, nature may not be pure mathematics but pure information: bits, like computer ones and zeros.

Leading theoretical physicist John Wheeler called this conjecture “It from Bit”.

According to this hypothesis, everything that happens at the level of interactions of fundamental particles and above is a kind of computational process.

“The universe can be thought of as a giant quantum computer,” says Seth Lloyd of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. “If we look at the “inner workings” of the universe, that is, at the structure of matter at the smallest possible scale, we see [quantum] bits, involved in local digital operations”.

Be that as it may, we simply cannot be anything but information.

Does it matter for us whether this information was programmed by nature or some kind of superintelligence? It is unlikely – well, except in the second case, our creators are theoretically able to intervene in the course of the simulation and even stop it altogether.

But what can we do to avoid this?

Tegmark encourages us all to lead as interesting lives as possible so as not to bore our creators.

Of course, this is a joke. Surely any of us will have more compelling motives to live life to the fullest than the fear that otherwise we will be “erased”.

But the very formulation of the question points to certain flaws in the logic of reasoning about the reality of the Universe.

The idea that some higher-order experimenters will eventually get tired of fiddling with us and decide to run some other simulation smacks too anthropomorphically.

Like Kurzweil’s statement about the school experiment, it implies that our creators are just cranky teenagers having fun with game consoles.

The discussion of the three versions of Bostrom also suffers from a similar solipsism. This is nothing more than an attempt to describe the Universe in terms of the achievements of mankind in the 21st century: “We develop computer games, after all. I bet that superintelligent beings would do this too, only their games would be much cooler!”

Of course, any attempt to imagine how superintelligent beings might act will inevitably lead to an extrapolation of our own experience. But this does not negate the unscientific nature of this approach.

Perhaps it is no coincidence that many proponents of the idea of ​​”comprehensive simulation” admit that in their youth they read science fiction avidly.

It is possible that the choice of reading predetermined their adult interest in the problems of extraterrestrial intelligence, but it also encourages them now to clothe their thoughts in the forms familiar to the genre.

They seem to be viewing space through the window of the starship Enterprise translator].

Harvard physicist Lisa Randell cannot understand the enthusiasm with which some of her colleagues dabble with the idea of ​​reality as a total simulation. For her, this does not change anything in the approach to the perception and study of the world.

According to Randall, everything depends on our choice: what exactly is meant by the so-called reality.

It is unlikely that Elon Musk spends his days thinking about the fact that the people around him, his family and friends are just constructs consisting of data streams and projected into his consciousness.

Partly he doesn’t do it because he simply won’t be able to constantly think in this way about the world around him.

But much more important is what we all know in the depths of our souls: the only definition of reality worth our attention is our immediate sensations and experiences, and not a hypothetical world hidden “behind the scenes”.

However, there is nothing new in the interest in what may actually be behind the world that is available to us in sensations. Philosophers have been asking similar questions for centuries.
