What is Pre-K vs. tk?

Over the next five years, Pre-Kindergarten (Pre-K) will replace our existing Transitional Kindergarten (TK) program.  This change will gradually phase in over time to include all 4 year-olds by the 2025-26 school year.

Historically, TK has served as the first year of a two year Kindergarten program.   Pre-K will represent a true bridge between Preschool and Kindergarten.  Pre-K is taught by a credentialed teacher with early childhood expertise, utilizing a unique specialized curriculum that is aligned with the Preschool Learning Foundations and Kindergarten Common Core standards.  Pre-K instruction is explicitly designed to support the range of social-emotional, physical, and academic needs of developing four year-olds. The Pre-K environment will include many opportunities for fine and gross-motor activities, oral language development, and social-emotional learning. IUSD’s Pre-K program prioritizes intentional teaching that is hands-on and child-centered,  purposeful structured play, and small-group instruction.

Pre-K will provide our youngest learners with a strong foundation for school readiness so that students enter Kindergarten prepared to learn and thrive!

For the 2022-23 school year, Pre-K will serve students who turn 5 years-old between September 2nd and February 2nd.

Pre-K (TK) school sites

Pre-K (TK) is currently offered in person at the following sites:

Serving the Central Area:  Deerfield, Eastshore, Meadow Park, Plaza Vista (Year Round), Springbrook and Westpark (Year Round)

Serving the Southern Area: Alderwood, Turtle Rock and University Park

*Due to the expansion of the program, sites may be added and/or changed.

IUSD Pre-K (tK) continuum of standards

  • IUSD’s Continuum of Standards: This is IUSD’s continuum of standards that outlines the bridge between the Preschool Learning Foundations and the Kindergarten Common Core Standards.   It is a roadmap for the standards taught – acknowledging the progression of skill development along the continuum.
  • California Department of Education Preschool Learning Foundations:  The Foundations provide an overview of the key knowledge and skills that most preschool children can achieve when provided with interaction, instruction, and an environment that is based on the research of early experiences shown to promote early learning and development.
  • California Department of Education Preschool Curriculum Frameworks: The Frameworks provides an overall approach to teachers to support student learning through environments and experiences that are developmentally appropriate, reflective of thoughtful observation and intentional planning, individually and culturally meaningful, and inclusive of children with disabilities and special needs.

questions and answers

What is the difference between Pre-K (formally TK) and Kindergarten?
The Pre-Kindergarten classroom will provide developmentally appropriate thematic-based curriculum. The curriculum is a hybrid between the California Preschool Learning Foundations and the California Common Core Standards for Kindergarten. Students in the Pre-K program will be provided a program that will bridge their early childhood experiences to those of the public school system.

Is my child required to go to a Pre-K class if their birthday falls within the cut-off date?

No, it is an optional program for families.

Can my child enter kindergarten if they are eligible for the Pre-K class?

No, students must turn 5 on or before September 1st to enter kindergarten.

Where will the Pre-K classes be held?

The classes will be held at elementary school sites within IUSD. Sites are located regionally and designated (upon completion of enrollment) based on assigned neighborhood school and space availability.

If the Pre-K class is not offered at my child’s neighborhood school, where will they go?

Based on space availability, they will go to the Pre-K classroom at the school closest to your child’s neighborhood school. Please keep in mind this is a one year program; your child will return to their assigned neighborhood school the following school year.

Which school will my child attend for kindergarten if they go to a different school for Pre-K?

Your child will still go to their assigned neighborhood school for kindergarten, unless you choose to pursue IUSD’s Intradistrict/School Choice option and follow those procedures.

Will there be transportation to the schools offering Pre-K classes?

No, again, Pre-K is not compulsory, and transportation would be cost-prohibitive. It is the parents’ responsibility to transport their children to their Pre-K program.

Can my child participate in Pre-K if his/her birthday is in August?

For the 2022-23 school year, IUSD’S Pre-K program will  be available for students who turn five years old between September 2, 2022 and February 2, 2023. Children turning 5 on or before September 1 are eligible for Kindergarten in IUSD.

10 safest major cities in the US |

10 Laredo, TX Laredo, TX

Mayor: Pete Saenz (Democrat)
Population: 261,639

Largely Hispanic Laredo is considered one of the least racially diverse cities in America. and one of the safest. It has a violent crime rate of 377 per 100,000 residents, 11% below the national average and 18% below the state of Texas. Nestling the Mexican border right across the Rio Grande from Nuevo Laredo, Mexico, Laredo defies what too many Americans think of big cities. In 2018, there were only 10 murders in Laredo.

Although his median family income of $39,400 is a whopping $14,000 lower than the national average, there were only 10 murders in Laredo.

Although its median household income of $39,400 is a whopping $14,000 below the national average, Laredo has a thriving restaurant scene, which is certainly no surprise. authentic mexican cuisine. Texas AandM International University calls Laredo home, and despite being the tenth largest city in Texas, the city has its own philharmonic orchestra and a popular semi-professional football team.

At least two dozen Catholic churches hold masses. en español, and every winter the city hosts the world-famous birdwatching festival, as well as the annual Mardi Gras-style celebration of George Washington’s birthday, featuring colonial-style costumes, contests, balls, and parades. Muy bueno…y muy segura.

9 Anaheim, California

Mayor: Harry Sidhu (Rp)
Population: 352,005

Despite the widespread and understandable desire to destroy Mickey Mouse, Anaheim, California, home of the original Disneyland theme park – squea ks overtook Laredo for 9th place. The city had just seven homicides in 2018, less than half the national average of five homicides per 100,000 people.

Anaheim is a wealthy place with a median family income approaching $60,000. Few large cities have median incomes above the national average as most people with high incomes move to the suburbs. However, the population of California is so large – 39.5 million inhabitants, 12% of the US population, call the Golden State home—that Anaheim, just ten miles southeast of Los Angeles, is essentially a steroid-using suburb. He is both dense and rich enough to host two professional sports teams, the baseball Angels and the hockey Mighty Ducks.

However, Anaheim’s gravitational pull is centered right in Disneyland, which draws the city’s tourists, big business meetings and hospitality. dollars that fuel his economy. With not only 28,000 employees, but the thousands of jobs it helps create, Disneyland brings in about $5.7 billion annually to Southern California.

However, tourism inevitably breeds robbery (defined as theft with violence or threat). violence – mostly robbery). Anaheim’s robbery rate (114 per 100,000 people), which is 28% above the national average, is a lonely Anaheim with violent crime ahead of the nation as a whole.

8 Lexington, Kentucky – Lexington, Kentucky

Mayor: Linda Gorton (Rp)
Population: 323,780

Centrally located in the state that brings us bourbon whiskey and bluegrass music, Lexington, Kentucky scores highly for public schools and safety, and are often included in lists of “the best city areas to live in”.

Although Kentucky’s annual event is the Kentucky Derby, held 80 miles west in Louisville, the state’s largest city, Lexington’s top attractions include the Kentucky Horse Park, a working horse farm, international equestrian competition venue, and a living museum. It is also home to the University of Kentucky, one of the most respected major public colleges in the US.

However, the inclusion of Lexington in this list is surprising: why he did this cut is that in 2018 there were only 29 registered5 attacks. This amounts to 91 attacks per 100,000 inhabitants; given that the national average is 247 attacks per 100,000 people, this figure is too good to be true. In addition, assault is by far the most common violent crime committed in America; robbery, 86 incidents per 100,000 people, that’s far from a second. If Lexington’s 2018 assault statistics are correct, that means there were inexplicably fewer assaults than robberies (422) and nearly as many rapes (243) as assaults.

7 Boise, Idaho – Boise, Idaho

Mayor: Lauren McLean (D)
Population: 228,790

Idaho’s largest city and capital ranks first on this list with a violent crime rate of less than 200 per 100 residents: 277 per 100,000 inhabitants, Boise’s statistics are 27% lower. g than the national average. In 2018, the city reported only one homicide.

In addition to its safety record, Boise’s relatively affordable home prices and well-regarded public school system helped it rank 17th on America’s Top News and World Report lists. underground live in the nation. Although Boise is borrowed from the early settlers, who were impressed by its vast woodlands when they toured the Treasure Valley area, Boise’s nickname – the City of Trees – today is maintained by one of the country’s most picturesque botanical gardens. P >

Ironically, one of Boise’s few problems stems from its own appeal: The city’s high quality of life has led to an influx of newcomers to what many call the looming “California settlement,” a term used when increased demand begins to wane. raise housing prices, increase enrollment, and reduce the overall quality of public schools because of the huge size of the classrooms. Boise Metro, which currently has about 700,000 residents, is projected to grow to nearly 800,000 by 2025 — an expected population growth of 15% in just half a decade.

Unfortunately, Boise Mayor Lauren McLean is the subject of an ongoing recall attempt due to leaked reports of policies proposed to protect law enforcement rights and implement conservation city status.

6 Irving, Texas – Irving, Texas

Mayor: Rick Stopfer (Republican)
Population: 242,242

Near a major city in the second most populous US state, Irving, Texas has an advantage similar to What Anaheim, California Has: It Is Usually a sprawling suburb of Dallas, much of which—like Disneyland in Anaheim—are sensibly planned communities. It’s easier to make a list of safe cities when the urban blight in your area is in a larger, older metropolitan area, close to the city limits, where violent crime rates are double the national average.

However, credit must be given. : Irving is a very attractive city with a high safety record. It has a violent crime rate of 209 per 100,000 residents, 45% lower than the national average, and is basically half of Texas’ statistics. Irving also benefits from a strong regional economy; In its entire urban area (Dallas-Fort Worth), the pre-pandemic unemployment rate was less than 3%. This is one of the reasons why Irving has been named one of the best cities to relocate for career development.

Yes, and more. Irving also has the world’s largest sculpture of a horse, which is so mysterious that its inclusion in this story is mandatory regardless of the subject. It is also home to the Ruth Payne House, where Lee Harvey Oswald stayed with his ex-wife Marina the night before President Kennedy was assassinated.

5 Henderson, Nevada – Henderson, Nevada

Mayor: Debra March (Democrat)
Population: 310,390

Henderson is the safer little brother of his older brother’s legendary depravity. Southeast of Las Vegas, Henderson is a largely planned super-suburb so sprawling that the satellite city is also Nevada’s second largest city. A charming dichotomy, Henderson offers convenient proximity to the famous Sin City Strip while offering an exciting outdoor lifestyle highlighted by gems like Lake Mead and Clark County Wetland Park.

Henderson enjoys the benefits of Las Vegas—a well-paying job, an eclectic restaurant, world-class entertainment—without the downsides. Millions of tourists and constant partying is a recipe for robbery and rape, and Vegas is twice the national average in both cases. By comparison, Henderson’s violent crime rate is 188 per 100,000 residents – less than half the national average. Its attack rate is 92 per 100,000 people, which is 63% lower than the country as a whole.

Thanks largely to the long-standing Las Vegas boom, Henderson is also exceptionally wealthy. The median household income in the country is $72,884, more than $13,000 higher than the country as a whole, and the median property value is approaching $340,000, indicating strong demand for property as newcomers continue to creep into one of the most rapidly growing urban areas of the country.

4 Scottsdale, Arizona

Mayor: Jim Lane (Rp)
Population: 255,310

Like Henderson, Nevada, Scottsdale, Arizona is an enclave of a larger metropolitan area; like Anaheim, it’s also a destination. Known for its luxurious spas and pristine golf courses, Scottsdale is a desert oasis 12 miles east of Phoenix, a thriving city of 1. 6 million and the nation’s fastest growing community.

Scottsdale is as safe as it is beautiful. The violent crime rate of 166 cases per 100,000 inhabitants is 57% lower than the national average. The city only reported seven homicides in 2018, and given the fact that Scottsdale attracts nine million tourists a year — 36 times its population — the burglary rate of 34 per 100,000 is incredibly low (less than half the national average). P >

Scottsdale is also, unsurprisingly, quite wealthy. As with Henderson, his median household income is over $72,000, and an impressive 81% of Scottsdale residents own their homes, which is key considering the city’s median home value is $483,000.

3 Plano, Texas – Plano, Texas

Mayor: Harry LaRosillier (Republican)
Population: 288,061

Plano is a rarity only available in places like Texas with a huge population: it is also its own city medium sized, and suburban. large. Dallas, the only city with two “safest city” satellites, is 20 miles to the south. Home to Fortune 500 companies like beverage giant Dr. Pepper-Snapple and marketing giant Alliance Data, Plano is a self-sustaining economic base and easily accessible to the “big city” and its office skyscrapers. These two factors combined lead to low unemployment and well-paid jobs; In fact, Plano, which cost 9$3,012, boasts the second-highest median income on the richest cities list.

Given its benefits, Plano is as safe as you might expect. The country’s violent crime rate of 139 per 100,000 inhabitants is 64% below the national average. Only five murders were reported in 2018, and the assault rate of 72 per 100,000 is 3 1/2 times less than the national average.

Plano has some charming sights. The Heritage Farmstead Museum is a restored 19th century farmhouse with original tools, furniture and a replica of School Room 1895 years old, and at the Museum of Intercity Railroad, you can ride a vintage train on the Texas Electric Railroad. Several scenic trails pass through Oak Point Park Nature Reserve, and to the northeast of the city is Southfork Ranch, the iconic setting of the long-running television series Dallas.

2 Virginia Beach, Virginia – Virginia Beach, Virginia

Mayor: Bob Dyer (Rp)
Population: 442707

Virginia Beach, the state’s largest city, surrounded by a three-kilometer-long boardwalk that intersects with several, beautiful, manicured almost 20 million people. visits it every year, making it one of the most popular family vacation destinations on the East Coast. Among the beach town’s many resorts, the boardwalk is a place in its own right, with several theme parks, games, arcades, fishing piers, and even its own guided lunch tour.

The extent to which tourists – especially distracted families – attract opportunistic criminals cannot be underestimated. Scammers have been robbing and robbing vacationers since the advent of tourist travel, and with that in mind, Virginia Beach’s violent crime rate (117 incidents per 100,000 residents) – almost 70% less than the national average – is extremely low. The country’s robbery rate is less than half the national rate, the number of assaults is more than four times lower, and in 2018, just seven murders were recorded in the city.

But the lack of one non-violent crime in particular epitomizes Virginia Beach’s exceptional safety: theft. Even though the family-friendly tourism economy is a pickpocket’s dream, the city’s theft rate is lower than the national average.

Virginia Beach’s economic statistics are typical of such a safe city, with a median household income of $75,623. outperforms the national average, and the $315,000 (and still rising) average home sale price is high considering many sales are holiday apartments rather than individual primary homes.

1 Irvine, California – Irvine, California

Mayor: Christina Shea (Republican)
Population: 282,572

Irvine is about the same as planned as a full-fledged city. Founded by the Irvine Company in the 1960s, the Orange County Municipality is located in the southeast quadrant of the Los Angeles metropolitan area near its list neighbor, Anaheim.

Whatever the plan for the 66-square-mile city, it worked: Irvine is by far America’s safest cityscape.
