Ma, Maisy

Maisy Ma (Jer. 馬曉晴, Cant. Russian Ma Hiuchin , Chinese Russian Ma Xiaoqing ; English Maisy Ma Hiu-ching; born November 18, 1999) — Hong Kong figure skater in singles. Two-time champion of Hong Kong (2016, 2017), silver medalist of the Reykjavik International Games (2016), participant in the championships of four continents.

Career

Early life

Macy Ma was born in Hong Kong. When she was three years old, the family moved to the capital of China – Beijing. Maisie’s kindergarten was close to the ice rink where she first got on skates. At the age of five, she began to attend the figure skating section. At the initial stage of her career, she trained under the mentorship of local specialist Gao Haijun.

As a native of Hong Kong, she was eligible to compete in the Hong Kong and Chinese Nationals at the same time. So, in December 2010, eleven-year-old Maisie took part in the adult championship of China and took fourth place among twenty-six participants, losing, among other things, to Li Zijun, a medalist in international tournaments, a rising star in Chinese single skating. Since the rules allow for the ability to compete in several age categories, the next year she competed in the adult tournament of Chinese singles and among juniors. At the last, Ma managed to win the silver medal.

In addition to her achievements in Chinese tournaments, Maisie has been the winner of the Hong Kong championships for five years in a row. In the 2009/2010 season, she started with a victory in the pre-junior advanced novice category, while competing among juniors achieved four subsequent triumphs.

Moving to the USA

Before the first international season at the junior level, she decided to make adjustments to the training process, and moved from China to the United States, where she practiced with famous specialists: Christy Kroll, Rafael Harutyunyan, Tammy Gambill and others.

By 2013, Ma had reached the required age to compete in ISU International Junior Tournaments. Due to this, she made her debut in the Grand Prix series, performing at the stage in Gdansk, Poland, in which on September 19 and 20, 2013 she presented programs on the ice of the Olivia Arena. The skater had difficulties with the execution of the triple loop, the judges considered it lowered in both short and free skates. Despite this, Maisie achieved a lofty sixth place, directly competing with figure skaters such as Gabrielle Daleman.

Subsequently, Ma competed in three more Grand Prix tournaments, but she failed to repeat or improve the result achieved in Poland – she finished outside the top ten. She finished the 2013–2014 season at the World Championships, where she failed to qualify for the final segment, having made mistakes in the short program. At the next championship, she also did not go to free rental. There were also problems at national competitions. The five-year streak of victories in the Hong Kong championships was interrupted – Ma lost the leadership of the junior category to the younger Yi Christy Leung.

First international medal

In the 2015/2016 season, the transition to the senior level followed, while Ma continued to compete in juniors. The competitive year was marked by improved results. She climbed to the top of the podium at the Hong Kong Adult Championship on her first try, thus becoming the winner in three different age categories. At the world junior championship, she was able not only to qualify for the free program, but also claimed to be among the ten strongest. On the first day of the tournament, she performed all three rotations at the maximum level of difficulty and set a personal record for a short run, gaining a foothold on the eleventh line. According to the results of the free program, in which she also improved her personal achievement, she became fifteenth.

Earlier this season, she competed in Reykjavik at the International Games, becoming the only Asian representative in the women’s singles tournament. Ma managed to win silver, which was the first award for a Hong Kong figure skater in international competitions. Also during the season, a debut at the Four Continents Championships followed. Successful sports performances were overshadowed by health troubles. Ma injured her ankle and missed a number of tournaments.

Trauma and university studies

In 2017, she again won the national championship, bringing the total number of victories in the Hong Kong championships of various ages to seven. In addition, she became the flag bearer of the national team at the Asian Winter Games and participated in the Four Continents Championship for the second time. In September 2017, she planned to compete at the Challenger Nebelhorn Trophy, which was a qualifying tournament for the Korean Olympics. But due to ongoing ankle problems, she was forced to put her career on hold. Ma focused on her studies and entered the University of Massachusetts. Sometimes he performs in ice shows with demonstration numbers. At one of them she presented her own production of the song “Yesterday” by The Beatles. Off the ice, he maintains a YouTube channel, recording vlogs and cover versions of famous songs.
