History of the city

The word “Tampa” is of Native American origin, but its meaning has been lost. Some researchers believe that the name of the city comes from the Calusa tribe and translate it as “Fire sticks”. Scientists suggest that the Native Americans called fire sticks lightning – a very common occurrence during storms in the bay.

It is believed that the first Europeans to visit Tampa were Spanish conquistadors in 1528. In 1821, the United States purchased Tampa from Spain: by doing so, the government sought to eliminate the refuges of slaves who had fled here from the southern states, and to reduce Indian attacks. nine0005

In 1849, Tampa was a village of 200 people. The growth of the population and the development of the city were hindered by swamps with mosquitoes carrying yellow fever. The fishing village had no industry and no roads, it was isolated from other cities. The situation began to change from the 1880s, when phosphate was found in the city and a railway was laid.

Tampa is still a major producer of phosphate. American industrialist Vicente Martinez Ybor set up a cigar business in Tampa, and others followed suit. Gradually, other industries began to develop. Tampa became the “cigar capital” and one of the largest cities in the United States by 1900s.

The ethnic composition of the city is heterogeneous: the descendants of immigrants from Europe make up about 50% of the population, the remaining 50% are African Americans, Hispanics, Asians and Indians.

Tourists from all over the world come to Florida and Tampa. There are excellent conditions for recreation for every taste: a mild climate and golden beaches, many interesting sights and picturesque places. The city ranks third in the United States in terms of the quality of active life. nine0005

Events and holidays

Tampa is a pretty fun city. Every year, residents and guests look forward to the most beloved holiday – the Gasparilla Pirate Festival. The festival takes place at the end of January and is a very significant event for Tampa. According to legend, once upon a time a pirate named Jose Gaspare sailed in these places, and it is in honor of his brave and grandiose adventures that a holiday is held, which the locals simply call Gasparilla.

Where to Stay in Tampa for Sightseeing

There are several good places in Tampa, depending on your reason for visiting. Staying in the city center is a great option for sightseeing and entertainment. You may want to stay close to Busch Gardens if that is your main reason for visiting, or near the stadium if you are going to watch a football match. Below are some highly rated hotels in these top locations.

  • Luxury Hotels: Centrally located, Le Meridien is an upscale hotel in a former federal courthouse and is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. A bit away from the action of the city center, but in a beautiful area is the modern Hotel Epicurean. If you’re coming to Tampa to see a game, the renaissance near Raymond James Stadium is a great option. nine0010
  • Mid-Range Hotels: Downtown Tampa Marriott Waterside Hotel and Marina overlooking the waterfront; pleasant outside patios; and large comfortable rooms. In the same category is the Sheraton Tampa Riverwalk, also with great location and scenic views. Both of them have pools and are conveniently located for visiting Ybor City or the Florida Aquarium. In a stunning location in the Historic Ybor District, the Hilton Garden Inn features an outdoor pool and hot tub. The Holiday Inn Hotel and Suites Tampa N, near Busch Gardens, is a good choice for families. nine0010
  • Cheap Hotels: A short drive from Ybor City is the Quality Inn and Suites, with a great location for this price range. Near the Raymond James Stadium is the inexpensive Comfort Suites. Also good value and near the stadium is Clarion. Both are a bit far from the city center but within a reasonable distance if you have a car and ideally located if you are here to see the game.

Places of interest

If you are in doubt about whether to go here, take a look at the photo of the city of Tampa, there is something to see. Every traveler will find something interesting for themselves. The tourist infrastructure of the city is very developed. Hotels, bars, restaurants and nightclubs sprawl along the coastline. There is a wide variety of entertainment complexes. Holidays in Florida are primarily associated with the sea. There are several excellent beaches in the Tampa area that will satisfy the needs of tourists:

  2. St. Pete Beach. Let’s just say that this is not the best beach in Florida, but it deserves attention. Its northern part is fairly built up with high-rise buildings, but in the south there are plenty of plots suitable for summer recreation. The bottom and coastal zone is covered with sand. nine0010
  3. Honeymoon Island. The beach is part of the national park area. However, not the entire coastal zone is suitable for recreation. There are many areas covered with sand, but most of the coast is damaged by erosion.
  4. Fort de Soto Park. This beach is located in a protected area, in the western part of the peninsula. Here you can watch flocks of birds. There is also a picnic area and a dog beach.
  5. Caladesi. This beach is located on the island of the same name, which is located in the Gulf of Mexico, near the city of Tampa. This area belongs to the national park. nine0010

Tampa Theater

Built in 1926, Tampa Theater is a luxurious palace museum with a unique blend of architectural styles including Italian Renaissance, Byzantine and Greek Revival. It regularly presents foreign and classic films along with special concerts and other programs. While you can see both new and old movies here, watching one of the classics in this building is a great way to feel like you’ve stepped back to a different time period.

Tampa Electric Manatee View Center at Apollo Beach

Tampa Electric Manatee View Center at Apollo Beach

Although it may seem like a strange place, this Manatee Sanctuary is located opposite the power plant Tampa. The manatees are drawn here with warm water produced by the power plant and can sometimes be seen in very large numbers. They are most common when the ambient temperature is cold, dropping below 68 degrees Fahrenheit. Visitors will find tide walkways showcasing many of Florida’s plants and birds, butterfly gardens, and a manatee lookout. The Manatee Viewing Center is also home to an educational building that contains a power plant and manatees. nine0005

Sunshine Skyway

Sunshine Skyway

Sunshine Skyway is a toll bridge located on I 275 / US 19. This multi-lane “stilted trail” is 12 miles long and curves gracefully through the entrance to Tampa Bay. Its most impressive feature is the 4.25 mile high bridge, the middle section of which is suspended from two giant pylons, allowing large ocean-going ships to pass below. The previous bridge was rammed by a cargo ship at 1980 and partly collapsed, and parts of the old bridge now serve as moorings for fishermen.

Driving across the new bridge offers great ocean views, and the bridge itself is also impressive and often photographed by tourists.

Ybor City

Ybor City

The center of Tampa’s Hispanic community, Ybor City is a National Historic District. It is named after its founder, cigar baron Vicente Martinez Ybor. He came to the region in the mid-1880s after union threats were made by workers at his Key West factory. At one point, the Ybor cigar factory was the largest in the world, with over 4,000 people hand-rolling over 900,000 cigars per month. However, the Great Depression and machine rollers ended the boom and most of the factories were closed and demolished. The area has experienced a revival in recent years and is home to many shops, galleries, restaurants and cafes. Seventh Avenue in the city of Ybor, known in Spanish as “Septima”, has some of the area’s most historic buildings, several of which are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Ybor City’s Colombian restaurant is the oldest state and the largest Spanish restaurant in the country. This historic institution was founded in 1905 by Cuban immigrant Casimiro Hernandez, Sr. Colombia is famous for its Spanish cuisine, dining shows and old world architectural charm. The entertainment venues have flamenco and jazz in the café.
