Geographical position
The city is located in the valley of the Salt River, called the “Valley of the Sun”, on the northern edge of the Sonoran Desert. In the east and northeast of the city, the McDowell Mountains begin.
Scottsdale is bordered to the west by Phoenix and Paradise Valley, to the north by Carefree, to the south by Tempe, and to the east by Fountain Hills and the Salt River Indian Reservation.
The territory of the city is 477.7 km².
Climate
Scottsdale has a dry climate with mild winters and very hot summers. The average temperature in summer is + 41ºС, in winter + 19 ºС.
History
The first inhabitants of Scottsdale were the Hohokam Indians. In the period from 1400 to 800 BC. e. this Indian culture worked the land here and built irrigation canals.
Before the arrival of Europeans, there was a small village of Pima Indians on the site of Scottsdale. Some houses of the indigenous people survived until the 20th century, but later all the Indians were forced to leave the city, moving to the Salt River Indian Reservation and other places. nine0003
In 1868, more than 200 km of canals, inherited from the Hohokam Indians, were restored and improved by the first Anglo-American company.
Twenty years later, US Army Chaplain Winfield Scott purchased a 2.6 km² piece of land for $2.50 an acre. His brother, George Washington Scott, became the first resident of the city of Orangedale, renamed Scottsdale in 1894.
In 1937 world-famous architect Frank Lloyd Wright built his winter home here at the foot of the McDowell Mountains in what is now known as “West Taliesin”. Scottsdale and parts of Phoenix were built up under the influence of Wright: there are many buildings according to his designs, there is a monument to Wright in the northern part of the city, and the main street bears his name. nine0003
In 1951 the settlement received the status of a city. The city seal depicts a cowboy riding a mustang.
In the 1950s-1970s, some large enterprises in the city used trichlorethylene in their production. In 1981, its presence was detected in samples of drinking water, after which the reconstruction of all purification systems was carried out, completed in 2006. Spread out in all directions, the city is bisected by the dry river Indian Bend Wash, which flows into the Salt River. Through this river, which overflowed during heavy rains every 99 years, there were no bridges, and the roads crossed it right along the bottom.
Several floods occurred in the 1960s, after which money was allocated from the federal budget for the construction of a concrete canal and bridges across the river. However, the residents of the city decided to use this money to create a system of parks and golf courses right at the bottom of the river, believing that the grass would retain water much more efficiently. Such a reconstruction of the city’s appearance attracted new residents here, and later bridges and a city pool were built with the funds that appeared. In the 70s, part of the city was settled by the nouveau riche, which is why the city received the nickname Snobsdale. nine0003
A visual arts center and a restaurant have been opened in the few remaining wooden buildings in the old town.
The city’s population has grown from 2,000 residents in 1951 to 240,710 in 2007, and is now the sixth largest city in the state. In 1933, Scottsdale was named “the best city to live” in the United States, but evil tongues claimed that the city received this title as “the best city to live in the rich.

The city consists of four districts: South Scottsdale, Old Town, Central Scottsdale and North Scottsdale. The city’s real estate market is one of the most expensive in the United States. North Scottsdale is the city’s youngest and fastest growing area. Annual Events
“Westernmost of the Cowboy Towns” Scottsdale relentlessly lives up to its reputation with a host of western-style events and parties.
From 19For 55 years, the city has traditionally hosted the world-famous show of Arabian horses, the Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show. Today, this performance attracts thousands of spectators who come to watch the competition of about 2000 Arabian horses and half-breeds. Perhaps the most famous cowboy event is the annual Scottsdale Jaycees Parada del Sol, held from 1954 years and lasting a whole month.
