History

Colony

Edina began as part of Richfield Township. In the 1850s, 17 families, most of them immigrants due to a severe famine in Ireland, came to Minnesota and claimed land in the southwestern part of what was then Richfield Village. They were followed by English and Scottish farmers who demanded more land near Minnehaha Creek. The Baird and Grimes and districts of the County Club are located in the northeast of Edina and were the first regions to be founded.

In 1888, the inhabitants of the colony met to discuss the establishment of a new village, thus breaking away from Richfield Village. The idea was approved by the community members and a committee was formed to take on the task.

Origin of the name

Minnehaha Grange Hall

After the decision to create a new village was made, there was debate about the name of this new village. Several village meetings were held at Minnehaha Grange Hall, where the names “Hennepin Park”, “Westfield” and “Edina” were proposed. Notes taken by Henry F. Brown, farmer and future owner (1889d.) Moulin d’Edina (mill of Edina) are as follows:

« A long debate ensued as to the name the corporation should bear. A motion was formed to take into account the vote taken at the previous meeting on the name of the future village, Westfield . Andrew Craik then formed another movement that named the future village Edina (having moved from Edinburgh in 1869, he bought and renamed the mill Edina Mill). After the motion made its decision, James A. Bull, a member of the five-man committee, formed another motion to postpone the meeting, which was supported by a majority. But the chairman of the meeting called the move illegal, and confusion ensued when Byrd, Wilson, Ryan, and Bull announced their intention to no longer be members of the committee if a minority decision had to be made. At this impassioned moment, the meeting became somewhat noisy, until after a few minutes order was restored. Seeing that the work could not be done at that time, the final decision was made to postpone the meeting to a later date.

The next morning, Edina’s name was finally chosen with 47 votes in favor and 42 against.

Edina today

Today, many of the names of Edina’s streets honor the families whose farms were established in the area.

Residents of Edina are considered wealthy (for example, the median household income in Edina in 1999 was $66,019 compared to $37,974 in Minneapolis and $47,111 in Minnesota), leading some to refer to them as “cake eaters” (meaning “cake eaters”). This once derogatory expression is a reference to Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s quote “They eat buns” (although many attribute the quote to Marie Antoinette of Austria) and is often used in slogans today. . Its use can be seen, for example, in the Disney movie “The Mighty Ducks” , where the phrase is used in reference to the character Adam Banks, who comes from Edina.

Although there are several billionaires among Edina’s residents, most famously Richard M. Schulze and Karl Pohlad, Edina has a population of all income levels (for example, 3. 3% of Edina’s population lived below the poverty line in 1999).

Education

Public institutions

Edina is part of Independent School District (ISD) 273, which primarily cares for children from Edina. Six elementary schools, two colleges (from 6- th to 3- th ) and in the middle school (from the second to the last year) there are about 7500 students from kindergarten to high school with 1139 teachers and other support staff. The administrative district offices are located in the Edina Community Center.
