short biography of an American serial killer

Gary Ridgway is one of America’s most brutal serial killers. From the beginning of the 80s until 1998, he committed atrocious crimes against young women and girls. As a rule, the maniac picked up only fugitives or ladies of easy virtue, performed sexual intercourse with them, and then strangled them – first with his bare hands, and then began to use a noose. The serial killer left the bodies of naked women without clothes and jewelry on the banks of the Green River. However, he was detained in the autumn of 2001. Gary Ridgway confessed to 71 murders, although police were only able to prove 49of them. Learn more about all this from this article.

Biography of Gary Ridgway

A serial killer was born in Salt Lake City, Utah in February 1949. Gary’s family was complete. He lived with his father and mother. However, according to relatives, the boy’s childhood was very difficult due to the difficult nature of his mother. For this reason, the future maniac often had to watch family scandals. Later it will become known that Gary Ridgway experienced sexual attraction and hatred for his mother.

During his studies at school, the future assassin was not particularly intelligent. In addition, many of his classmates noted that Gary was quite idiosyncratic and secretive. At the age of 16, he stabbed a six-year-old boy. Gary did it only because he wanted to take someone’s life.

In high school, the future maniac signed up for the fleet as a volunteer. He served in the army in Vietnam, where he took part in the fighting. Two of his marriages ended in divorce. One of the ex-wives bore him a son at 1975 year. The latter became a Marine and lives in San Diego.

Deeds committed

Between 1982 and 1998, a maniac raped and killed 49 women. At least only this number of acts carried out is proven by the police.

Ridgway committed crimes near the cities of Tacoma and Seattle in Washington. It mostly happened in the summer of the 80s and 90s. In most cases, the victims of the maniac were women of easy virtue and runaway girls, whom the killer picked up on the highway. He left the bodies of the latter without clothes and jewelry on the banks of the river called Green River. From here the maniac got his nickname – “The Killer from the Green River.” Gary Ridgway killed women in his house, car or in deserted places.

How it worked

Gary Leon Ridgway picked up women and girls on the track. After that, he rubbed himself into their confidence with the help of a photograph of his son. Then the maniac seduced his victims and strangled them with his hands. Many of the dead resisted strongly. In order not to fall under suspicion due to the scars on his hands left by his victims, Gary subsequently began to use a noose. Thus, the maniac acted very monotonously and for a long time did not attract any attention to himself.

How he became a suspect

Serial killer Gary Ridgway tried his best to confuse the police so that they would not get on his trail. The maniac even began to leave the bodies of the victims not only by the river, but also in the forest zone. However, careful disguise did not help to hide what had been done.

In 1983, one of the women of easy virtue, whom the killer picked up on the highway, told the police that Gary began to choke her during sexual intercourse. The latter strongly resisted and was able to escape. Thus, the woman miraculously survived.

Already in 1984, the maniac successfully passed the polygraph test. This helped him temporarily remove suspicion from himself. Nevertheless, already in 1987, hair and saliva were taken from him for research. The analyzes made significantly helped the police in their further investigation.

Interesting facts from the life of a maniac

In 1985, the maniac began dating a girl who became his wife three years later. Later, the latter told reporters that her husband spent a lot of time outside their home. He explained this by taking extra shifts at work.

Ridgway himself told reporters that after he met his wife (Judith Mawson), his urge to commit atrocious crimes waned. The latter, in turn, later said that by becoming the wife of Gary, she saved several lives. In addition, it became known that the serial killer and his wife preferred to make love in nature. When the ex-wife showed these places, the detectives were shocked. After all, it was there that the remains of the bodies of murdered women and girls were found.

Arrested

The serial killer was finally apprehended by the police and arrested at the end of November 2001. The basis for this was the samples of his analyzes, which, according to the results of the DNA examination, completely coincided with the traces of seminal fluid and hair that were found on the bodies of the victims of the maniac.

At first, Gary was accused of only 4 murders, which he committed about two decades ago. Later, three more women were added to this number of victims. Because traces of paint were found on the bodies of the latter, which was used at the enterprise where the maniac worked.

Two years after his arrest, Gary was charged with 48 murders. This was enough to deprive the maniac of life by applying the death penalty. Nevertheless, the authorities went to an agreement with a brutal killer. Because in exchange for a life sentence, Gary promised to show the places where the rest of his victims were buried.

Court

The bloodiest maniac in the history of the United States was sentenced to 48 terms of life in prison without the possibility of release. In addition, the court sentenced him to 480 years in prison for concealing evidence. At the meeting, the maniac cried a lot and asked for forgiveness from the relatives of the dead.

A film was made about Gary Ridgeway

In 2005, the film “Green River Killer”, based on real events, was presented to the audience. The main character here is Gary Ridgway himself. Despite the fact that the movie was supposed to be a documentary, its content is a bit different from what it really was. In the film, Gary has a home, a beautiful wife and a son. The maniac’s wife constantly refuses to be intimate with him because she has a headache. The serial killer himself brings women of easy virtue into the house, makes love to them, and then takes their lives. In addition, the actor who played the role of Gary does not at all look like the latter in reality.

Number of victims

Initially, the maniac pleaded guilty only to committing forty-eight murders. In addition, he pointed to the places where the police found the remains of the bodies of raped and strangled women. Subsequently, Ridgway announced that he had carried out 62 murders.

In February 2011, the trial of the cruel maniac took place again. He was accused of 49 murders of a 20-year-old girl. The maniac’s involvement in the deed was proven. However, the court did not change the earlier verdict.

According to some reports, the bloody maniac confessed to committing 71 murders. The list of victims includes only young women and girls. Age – from 12 to 38 years. They were all killed by Gary Ridgway. A photo of the victims is shown below.

No remorse

The lawyers who defended the maniac could not believe that the murders of women were committed by such a kind and quiet man as Gary Ridgway. The latter did not refuse to give an interview. In addition, when talking to reporters, he said that he regretted not burying the bodies of many of his victims. Nevertheless, the maniac did not repent of having committed such atrocities that through his fault young women and girls lost their lives.

The maniac also stubbornly concealed that he liked to have sexual intercourse with the corpses of his victims. But over time, he spoke about his “unhealthy addiction.” When asked why he did it, he answered very simply: “You didn’t have to pay for it. ” The bloody killer did not consider himself a sick person. During the forensic psychiatric examination, he did not reveal any abnormalities. Despite the fact that he studied very poorly at school, he always had a very good memory. In addition, it is worth noting that the level of his intelligence is 83.

He also had four cars of different colors and brands. For this reason, the police could not figure out the maniac for so long. Even detectives were baffled by how well thought out a serial killer was.

Gary Ridgway now: where is the Green River killer today? Is he in jail?

Investigation Discovery presents Green River Killer: Mind of a Monster. The series looks at infamous serious murderer Gary Ridgway, whose crimes terrorized the state of Washington after bodies, mostly sex workers, were found near the Green River. . Through chilling tapes and interviews between the authorities and the perpetrator, the show looks at the evil that was already lurking in the corners of his mind and how it came to life.

Who is Gary Ridgway?

Gary was born February 18, 1949 in Salt Lake City, Utah. His parents were Thomas and Mary Ridgway and he was the middle child. His family life was not the best, and his parents constantly quarreled. His father apparently had trouble with the presence of sex workers, and his mother was described as bossy. Until the age of 13, Gary regularly peed his bed, and his mother cleaned him. In fact, he admitted that as a teenager, he had mixed feelings for her, including anger and sexual attraction, which caused him to fantasize about killing her.

Claudia Craig was his first wife, and the marriage fell apart due to infidelity on both sides while Ridgway served in the Vietnam War with the US Navy. His second marriage to Marcia Winslow also met the same fate, though he did become religious at this point in his life (but that didn’t stop him from sleeping with sex workers). The couple also had a son named Matthew. It was said that Ridgway had a huge sexual appetite and even wanted his wife to have sex in public places or in the woods (many of his victims were found there later).

The crime season began in the 80s. It’s scary to think that Ridgway once said he killed so many women that he lost count. Most of his victims were vulnerable women – sex workers, runways and drug addicts. He picked them up in his sex truck and then strangled them when he drove them home. He then proceeded to scatter their bodies throughout the Seattle woods. He was most active from 1982 to 1984. In 1985, he began a relationship with his future (third) wife, Judith Mawson. He claimed to genuinely love her, so his murderous activity decreased.

South King County was horrified when dead women began to appear along the Green River, and since no one knew who the killer was, he was nicknamed the Green River Killer. After all, the semi-truck painter managed to evade arrest for almost two decades, until 2001. However, it should be noted that he was arrested in 1982 and 2001 on charges of prostitution.

What’s interesting about his arrest is that (perhaps) the most infamous serial killer ever, Ted Bundy, played a huge role in it. Bundy was already on death row by the time Ridgway started. For obvious reasons, he was able to offer the authorities to understand the mind of a serial killer. Bundy stated that the perpetrator revisited the sites to have sex with the victims again. He also advised working group members Robert Keppel and Dave Reichert to stake out any new lots.

In the end, Ted Bundy’s insight, combined with the psychological profile of legendary FBI agent John Douglas, helped the police trace the crimes back to Gary Ridgway. He became a suspect in 1983, but underwent a polygraph test the following year. But the dollar did not stop there. You see, although it took the police several years to finally point the finger at Ridgway, they collected samples and evidence in order to obtain an arrest warrant. Over time, technology has advanced, and the police have retested the samples. In the end, the serial killers are knocked down by DNA evidence and forensic analysis of spray paint used at the crime scenes. The investigation cost taxpayers $15 million.

Where is Greg Ridgway today?

Initially, he was arrested for only four murders. But at his trial, Ridgway faced 48 charges of first-degree murder and even admitted to being guilty on 23 more counts. Thus, the number of his murders exceeded 70 people. However, as is common with most serial killers, the real number is predicted to be higher, with some sources putting it closer to 90. Some of his victims were even 15 years old.

Ridgway pleaded guilty to charges brought against him as part of a plea bargain and even agreed to provide the whereabouts of the bodies of other victims. In return, he was not threatened with execution. For someone who claimed that killing women was his career, even a hefty sentence seemed less. He was sentenced to 48 life sentences with no parole to be served. An additional 10 years per victim was also added for falsifying evidence. He is in the Washington State Penitentiary at Walla Walla.

Inmates have petitioned that the prison does not provide them with a safe environment during the coronavirus pandemic, but the Washington Supreme Court voted against releasing some of the most heinous criminals on the streets. Ridgway, who once said he wanted to be the best serial killer, also fell into that realm.

3 serial killers who only killed women

Many serial killers preferred women as their victims – those who were physically weaker than them. It seems to us that murderers always look like murderers, but looking at this list, it is hard to believe that some criminals were happily married, while others were well educated and received the best upbringing.

Although he probably had many more victims – Bundy kidnapped them, then raped and tortured them. He killed some women while they slept. After killing the kidnapped girls, he again raped them, dismembered them, and left some parts of the body in his apartment as souvenirs.

It seems that a person with such inclinations simply had to grow up in disgusting conditions. But, despite the fact that Bundy was indeed an illegitimate child, he was raised by his grandparents.

Bundy spoke fondly of his relatives. He admitted that he always respected his grandfather and identified himself with him. However, the rest of the family described him as a tyrant and a fanatic who hated blacks, Italians, Catholics and Jews, beat his wife and tortured animals.

Ted Bundy received an excellent education and was an attractive and extremely charming man. In many respects, it was precisely due to this that he managed to lure gullible girls into his networks.

When Bundy went to prison, he managed to escape several times, although the consultants assured him that it was better for Bundy to stay in place. He himself admitted that the murders were part of the “adventure”. Deprivation of life has become a way to finally “master” the victim, and sexual violence – to physically take possession of her remains.

It’s amazing that even the FBI took advantage of how well Bundy understood the logic of serial killers. For example, he offered his help in investigating the Green River Killer case. Bundy made a very accurate psychological portrait, but no one listened to him. As a result, the killer was at large for another 17 years.

Ted Bundy was executed in the electric chair on January 24, 1989 in Florida.

Gary Leon Ridgway

The Green River Killer that Ted Bundy helped find. Committed 49proven murders of girls and women, but confessed himself at 71, between 1982 and 1998. After 20 years, his guilt was proven by the results of DNA analysis.

Grew up in a complete family. However, the fact that she was “full” did not make her prosperous: Gary’s father liked to use the services of prostitutes. As a student, Ridgway was considered weak, and his IQ was very low.

Which, however, did not prevent him from finishing school and getting married. Three times. Each time the divorce was due to the infidelity of one of the spouses: either Ridgway could not resist going to a prostitute (they were the weakness of a maniac), or the wife, in the absence of her husband, brought her lover. He was married to his third wife Judith Mawson for 14 years and, according to Ridgway himself, loved her very much. He himself admitted that while they were married, his “activity” began to decline. Judith admitted: “I feel like I saved lives by being his wife and making him happy.”

Ridgway’s victims were prostitutes or fugitives who would not be quickly looked for. He committed most of the crimes in his house, truck or deserted places. Ridgway’s ex-wife said they loved having sex in nature. At the request of the detectives, she showed some of these places, not suspecting that the bodies of the victims had previously been found in these very places.

He left the bodies of some strangled women without clothes and jewelry near the Green River. Ridgway himself spoke of his victims: “I would talk to her … make sure that she does not think about sex or about something that scares her. To make her think, you know, “This guy doesn’t give a damn!” I didn’t care though, all I wanted was to grab her, drag her into a car, and kill her.”

At the trial, Ridgway wept and asked for forgiveness from the relatives of the victims.

Sentenced to life imprisonment without the right to correspond.

Keith Hunter Jesperson

He is also called the Happy Face Killer because he always put a smiley face at the end of messages he sent to the media as his signature.

Grew up in an aggressive dysfunctional family: his father was an alcoholic and a domestic tyrant. Jesperson for some reason denied this, although other family members and acquaintances confirmed that the elder Jesperson often drank. The father also bullied them – once, even for educational purposes, he used a stun gun on his son.

Keith’s first victims were animals: he played them off and loved to watch them fight and kill each other. At the age of 10, he made the first attempt on a person – his friend Martin. He did not deny that he was going to kill Martin. Later, Jesperson almost drowned another boy in a public pool, but the rescuers made it in time.

However, all these brutal tendencies did not prevent Jesperson from marrying and having three children.

His first known victim was at 1990 Tunja Bennett. They met in a bar, and he invited Tunja to his rented house. After sex, a skirmish began between them: Keith beat the woman and strangled her.
