Head
Elena Leonidovna Grigorenko
Scientific supervisor of the Scientific Center for Cognitive Research, head of the areas “Generation, transfer and acquisition of knowledge” and “Autism Spectrum Disorders: Science and Practice”, Doctor of Psychology
Chief Researcher for Interdisciplinary Studies of Human Development, St. Petersburg State University, Leading Researcher at the Center for Applied Psychological and Pedagogical Research, Moscow State University of Psychology and Education
Relevance of the project support programs, providing timely assistance and successful socialization of people with special needs. Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs) impose a high burden on the government budget, both from direct costs of non-medical services, such as inclusive education, and indirect costs, such as those associated with the disability of close relatives who devote all their time to a child with ASD.
In Russia, there are no official statistics yet that estimate the real number of people with ASD, and studies on the prevalence of ASD have not been conducted so far.
The project responds to the social order from the parent community and the largest association of parent NGOs in the field of autism – the Autism-Regions Association, which organizes the work of help services for children with ASD.
The study is supported by the Department of Health and the Department of Education, Science and Youth Policy of the Voronezh Region.
Scientific and practical significance of the project
The purpose of the study is to assess the prevalence of ASD for the first time in Russia in a sample of children aged 6 to 9 years using the city of Voronezh as an example.
In addition to actually obtaining data on prevalence, the study will allow validating the Russian-language version of the screening socio-communicative questionnaire (SCQ), assessing the prevalence of various forms of symptomatic manifestation, intellectual and language impairments, describing various developmental profiles in ASD and, based on the array of data obtained, form more accurate hypotheses for subsequent longitudinal work to identify environmental and genetic-environmental factors in the etiology of ASD.
In addition to scientific goals, the mission of the study is to improve awareness of ASD and to provide a basis for future evidence-based screening, diagnostic, intervention and educational programs.
Expected results
The study will help:
- assess the prevalence of ASD in Russia, the prevalence of intellectual disabilities among children with ASD, the prevalence of language and speech disorders associated with ASD, the percentage of children with severe adjustment disorders and their families who need more support from social services to help families and children;
- introduction in Russia of modern methods of screening and diagnostics, more accurate assessment of the diagnostic validity of their Russian-language versions;
- development of longitudinal cohort studies of ASD in Russia;
- contribution to the study of the prevalence of ASD in the world;
- effective planning of the federal and regional budgets for organizing programs to identify ASD and provide assistance to children with ASD and their families;
- improve access for more children with ASD to early intervention programs, special educational settings and social assistance services.
