About book

Gregory Roberts is a man with an amazing destiny. After his daughter was taken from him, his life went downhill. Roberts’ horrendous deeds resulted in a prison sentence. Unable to withstand solitary confinement, he escaped. In his life there was everything: from the mafia and torture to secret flights around the world. Of course, years later, Roberts still had to serve time, then he rethought a lot and began to write a novel. In those conditions, it was not easy, but writing became an outlet where the author put his life experience, thoughts and feelings, literally confessing to the whole world. The continuation of the famous book “Shantaram” tells the story of a man named Lin, who, despite the trials he has experienced, knows that his story is not over yet. For several years now, the images of Carla and Kardebhai have been in front of Lin’s eyes, and their voices echo in his head. However, even the death of the mafia leader and the loss of the desired woman cannot stop him. Lin is simply obliged to complete Kardebhai’s latest task. He will have to find a mysterious thinker who lives high in the mountains, become a witness to heated debates between those who want to take a dominant place among the mafia and, of course, learn to open their hearts to new feelings and hope. nine0003

Next… These simple and wise words, like the sayings of St. Idris, could have been limited.Inexpressible longing, enduring boredom, at times nevertheless turning into painful bewilderment – this is the mood that owned me for two endless weeks, mediocrely ruined for mastering this exemplary graphomaniac From time to time I wanted to cautiously feel my own body, well, check the pulse there, or something: what if I really don’t have a heart?0134 At first, you follow the daffodil-on-a-bike even with interest: what else will he throw out? How white will his rrromantic cloak be? To what extent has the criminal mastered the secrets of writing?..
None, alas. The endless pages of “Shantarama-2” (from the first one God had mercy on me) were filled with Roberts with the tenacity of a prisoner in solitary confinement, scratching sticks-days on the walls of his prison. There was no good, kind and at the same time honest person like James Barry next to Comrade Lin, who would inadvertently whisper to him: “ A little smaller is a great thing .

And it’s not just about volume, you understand. If the book is good, then the pages just fly and rustle, you look, half a thousand is gone, and here is the content, the imprint, the back cover … “How? It’s all?” 🙁
And the author of “Shadow of the Mountain” has everything TOO TOO. So yes, volume. the light of the story).0163 peaceful and beautiful city ”). Caricatures: that the Blue Hijab, that Madame Zhu – sorry, these are not heroines and not even characters. These are carnival costumes. Effective, I won’t even argue here. But inside of them is emptiness. An emptiness that cannot be hidden by any spectacular heaps, no pathos, no endless repetitions.
Speaking of repetitions.

“All-in-one,” I said.
“All-in-one,” he repeated.
“All-in-one,” I said.
“All-in-one,” he repeated. nine0183

— What is it? I asked.
Nothing! he replied.
— What is it, Didier?
– I said nothing!

I’m not exaggerating, these are literal quotes, and the book is full of such . .. goodness. Dumas would be jealous. The author of two (sic!) shantarams obviously has some kind of brain disorder. I don’t even think to ask one of the “marker” questions, because the author answers it himself: hashish.
From time to time, the monotony of reading hypnotizes, and then, suddenly with a big shudder, you find yourself in “The Blurred”: this is a world where it’s okay to build a shelf above the gas boiler for storing and drying hallucinogenic mushrooms, where the girl’s eyes can be compared to sixteen green queens, and Lin himself (“Ling-Ling-carpet, hot pancake on the nose,” I mutter angrily, unable to resist) introduces himself a man in a talker suit: constantly changing his appearance, he is able to bring a helpless contemplator to a complete loss of self-control.

It’s really bad for a main hero with a moral code. Well, at least some, the most overwhelmed. This is perhaps the only thing that was at least a little fun when forcing this Sivash. Like, look how noble I am: either I shower someone with money indiscriminately, or I don’t let pimps get too loose. Vishnu-Krishnu, you are such a dunce! Where did you get the money from? Yes, you yourself say: three or four times a day I traveled around the quarters entrusted to you … I collected tribute, of course. And pimps shouldn’t let loose, you see. Prostitutes should not bear all their earnings to them, but … but where? That’s right, in the chests of Koshchei. Well, Kaderbhaya. What, died? Go you. Really died?! Yoly-paly, not immortal, so he was. It’s awkward how it happened… Then Sanjaya. Or who else is there. nine0134 What’s going on in the head of Gregory “Lin” David “Shantaram” Roberts is extremely difficult to understand. These are not criminals – says, for example, he – but ordinary citizens engaged in criminal activities . SHTOA? And he doesn’t judge anyone. I’m not even talking about his whores – but look: our robingus does not even condemn the master’s shoulder work. Nenuacho, he was of use to the Company… *facepalm*

And other side symptoms of graphomania, such as: philosophical thoughts worthy of Coelho (some of them are meaningless, like koans), and strainedly pretentious metaphors. .. and how here do not remember Melihan:

A beautiful but unnecessary comparison is like a diamond necklace on the chest of a warty toad, which is carried out of a silvery fog by a vile macaque.

Take the pudding to the toad. Back to the fog, please. Thank you. You can serve the next dish 🙂

“It doesn’t matter what you did or who you were. And even who you are now. What matters is who you aspire to be.”0164

Having once read the novel “Shantaram” , I was completely delighted with this story, and therefore, having learned about the continuation, I was glad that I could plunge into this world again and find out what happened to Lin after the death of Kaderbhai and Carla’s marriage. But, on the other hand, I was skeptical about this continuation, because I understood that the continuation, no matter how good it was, would never surpass the original source. My fears were not in vain. When I started reading, I was very disappointed with the novel. The sequel is very much losing the first part. Now I understand why so many negative reviews followed this book, I think even the most devoted fans of Gregory Roberts will be disappointed. Or maybe I expected too much? Be that as it may, it is immediately felt that the book was not written from the heart, but purely for the sake of money. nine0003

Already in my review of Shantaram I confessed my love for India, and one of the reasons why I fell in love with the first part was that the spirit of India was felt in every line of it, it was clear how the author was attached to this country, with what warmth he treats it. Even flaws were shown as virtues. Immediately there is a feeling that the author has already had enough of India, wants to quickly escape from there, and therefore reduced her spirit to a minimum. There is no Indian flavor here, the optimism of their inhabitants is not shown, the author made the whole bias mainly on their mafia, and therefore it seemed as if you were reading some kind of criminal report: fights, fights and more fights. If you have ever seen Indian films, and especially their action films, where the main character easily cracks down on all his enemies, and at least henna to him, then you roughly know what to expect from the novel. There are only solid mafia showdowns and nothing more. nine0003

Secondly, there is no meaningful plot in the novel, no intrigue. The author tried to collect several stories from the life of the heroes of the novel, but in the end you don’t even really remember what you read, since the plot is completely sucked out of your finger, as if Roberts himself didn’t know what to write, he is constantly sausage from one topic to another, just in order to stupidly fill the pages. In addition, there is too much water in the novel (considering that nothing meaningful happens in the novel) in addition, the storyline is devoid of any dynamics, which is why you constantly drown in this story. Apparently, someone told the author that the bigger the book, the better. In my opinion, the novel could be cut in half and save readers from having to read unnecessary information about unnecessary characters and their rather stupid dialogues. But the biggest minus in this whole story is this part, where Shantaram gets to the mountain, on which lives a very “wise”, hashish-smoked old man named Idris, who teaches people all sorts of “wisdom”, and the rest, with their mouths open, listen to him attentively, they even write down his every word so as not to miss anything, because this is philosophy! This was the full finish! I have never read such nonsense. Wasn’t there a person around Roberts who would tell him “what kind of nonsense are you writing?” nine0003

Thirdly, the heroes were disappointing. If in the first part they were bright, memorable, each with its own unique story, then here they are faded and annoying with their behavior. Although I love Indian films, I have always been unnerved by some of the clown behavior of their characters. All the heroes of the novel behave not just strangely, but in an idiotic way, as if they are not mafiosi, but small children: Didier, whose main problem is what to come to the ball: a ballerina or a gladiator; Liza, who suddenly abruptly changes her orientation; Khaled, who for no reason becomes “holy”; Johnny Cigar, who does not want to have children, etc. And these problems of heroes are painted on 829pages. Also, new heroes appeared who behaved hysterically: Oleg, who sent his smelly T-shirts to former passions to understand who would come to the “scent” and find him, Diva is the daughter of one of the rich in India, who behaves like an eccentric fool, “ Blue Hijab” who shoots her husband for not allowing him to wear the hijab. Well, there are many more shots like this. And I am glad that Prabaker did not live to see the second part, otherwise Roberts would have spoiled his image (by the way, Prabaker is never mentioned during the entire novel, and this is a shame). nine0003

Fourthly, the love line went out of hand very badly. Carla and Lin haven’t seen each other for two years, and the first thing they do is start a verbal battle over who knows more quotes on various topics. What nonsense! Yes, Lin and Carla themselves have changed beyond recognition. They became somewhat refined. They don’t have the original flair anymore. Their dialogues became annoying and stupid, but the author wanted to make them with a touch of mystery, but it didn’t work out.

The only advantage of the novel is that it is written in a pleasant language, thanks to which the novel is read easily and quickly enough, and there were some moments when it was really interesting to read. Although there is too much pathos and pseudo-philosophy, intricate metaphors that supposedly should decorate the text, but in reality only cause laughter. But here one can understand the author, since he lived in India for a long time and adopted their manner. But, I have to admit, there were some quotes that hit the mark. The downside, however, is that the author went too far with all this “philosophy”, which is why you don’t believe that someone is talking to each other like that or thinking about something in this style. nine0003

Conclusion: The novel “Shadow of the Mountain” turned out to be dull, tedious, not at all attractive, devoid of the magic that was in “Shantaram”. “Shantaram” is one of my favorite books, which I am ready to re-read again and again, but “Shadow of the Mountain” flew by without being remembered by anything, without hooking on anything.

My rating: 6/10 For a long time I did not know what rating to put, but then I decided that the “three” is the most worthy rating for this novel, because this story did not touch my heart. nine0003

All stories must end on time. Shantaram is no exception. Yes, it was sad to say goodbye to a charismatic hero who lost his mentor and lover. But that was the logical conclusion to the adventure saga, which included both the escape from prison, and life in the slums of Bombay, and the formation of Lin as a person. An exciting action, almost magical, from which I did not want to break away. Why spoil these impressions with a sequel? Thirty-five hours about nothing performed by Ivan Litvinov … Although the reader is at the level, but only the book is a dummy. nine0003

Carla irritated me the most. Yes, yes, the one from which in the first part goosebumps. But here she acts, excuse me, a complete fool. Capricious and false, she talks about everything in the world – she knows everything. And the rest are like: Oh, it’s just something! She is a genius! genius! – and fall into a swoon.
And she makes her own perfumes such that the best perfumers are delighted and almost ready to put their lives into unraveling the secret of the fragrance.
And she rides a motorcycle gracefully. And her eyes shine a hundred times for ten pages. And they are green! Green!!! Do not forget! nine0003

And all her business ideas are pure delight. And if, for example, Shantaram does not support the opening of the Lost Love agency, then you urgently need to stop talking to him until he crawls on his belly and agrees to all the conditions – Carla knows everything better. Her opinion is the ultimate truth.
What else I blame her for is that she made a pitiful henpecked out of a hero that I liked.
It’s embarrassing to say, but Lin was hypnotized.

What mafia is there? What are the breakdowns? People, wake up – you need to run after Carla’s skirt, otherwise she will suddenly marry again for incomprehensible reasons and without any logic. nine0134 Question: what did the hero actually do in this part? I do not understand.
At the very beginning, however, there was Liza and there was no Carla – and it was still possible to read (it is precisely because of this that the rating is one, but only a deuce).
But Lisa, it seemed to me, rather quickly turned into a victim of circumstances, namely, she realized that for Lin there was only one light in the window, and it was not her, but You Know Who. And she died under mysterious circumstances.

Naturally, the hero and You Know Who began to investigate her death. But believe me, everything was very boring, however, like the rest of what is happening in the book. Then everyone was sad for Kaderbhai, but also nothing special – and I was waiting for some secrets. nine0134 On the other hand, there were many philosophical disputes on the mountain – the author did not waste time in vain (the second part was written much later), he obviously read treatises and decided to brag about it.
But Carla was smarter (no doubt). He told her, she gave him ten, and he was like: oh, yes! Every word you say is brilliant!

But Roberts saved the funniest thing for last: when the only villain in the whole novel suddenly changed.
Just like that: he came up on the street and said, they say, I’m good. I was even speechless for a few minutes. Wonderful metamorphoses. He must have seen Carla, there’s no other way. nine0134 I don’t like to impose my opinion, but please don’t read this novel. Lin’s story ended in the first part. There is no continuation. The shadow of the mountain is just a faint semblance of a gripping plot, the shadows of characters that many liked … but only names remained of them here.

Shadow of the Mountain quotes

Yes, I really like you. We have been together for quite a long time, and I am pleased to be with you. But no more than that. Do you know that I never had a real feeling for you?
Every time I tried to love Lisa, this knife stuck in my chest: these words she said, because she said them for both of us.
“People shouldn’t belong to each other,” I said softly. – It’s impossible. This is the first rule of freedom.
She tried to smile. Did not work out.
– Why do people break up? she asked, returning to the topic that tormented her.
– Why do people come together?
– What, you decided to pretend to be a psychiatrist, answering a question with a question?
– OK OK. If you really want to know my opinion, I think that people break up first of all in those cases when they were not really together.
– What if you are afraid to be with someone? she asked, her eyes wandering over the tabletop. – Or with anyone at all?
– What are you talking about?
– Recently, I feel as if the committee again elected me the queen of the parade, although I did not even aspire to become one. Understand?
– No, Lisa. nine0003

Shadow of the Mountain” by Gregory David Roberts: Shantaram returned even wiser and hopelessly in love

In the new novel by Gregory David Roberts, there are as many as 818 pages! It’s worth reading the review before you start reading. nine0003

In “Shadow of the Mountain” we will meet with the same characters that more than charmed readers in the first part. Shantaram still lives in Bombay, is friends with the same gang of criminals and is still in love with the same woman. It is surprising that, continuing to walk on seemingly trodden paths, the author does not repeat at all, but surprises in a good way.

What’s going on in the new book

Two years have passed since Carla (Lina-Shantarama’s lover) married someone else, and Lin got together with her girlfriend Lisa and lives almost happily in the union of not loving, but comfortably sharing space of people. The eighties, mobile communications and laser printers have not yet been invented, the mafia continues to draw fake documents and control drug trafficking on the streets of Bombay. Abdullah remains with the deceased Kaderbhai’s gang, now led by a nasty guy named Sanjay. Didier, a Frenchman with incredible charm and a frequenter of the Café Leopold, never leaves his position at a table overlooking the street in the tourist district of Colaba. The rainy season is approaching again – for Lin, a time of great change and reflection on the future. The future, which is seen in the first two hundred pages with the lovely Liza, suddenly turns out to be crossed out by the unexpected appearance of first rumors about the former sweetheart, and then herself in all her glory. The meeting awakens in Lina a dreamy mood and a craving for conversations on philosophical topics, which will certainly roll into declarations of love. nine0003

Why this is a cool novel

The mixture of literary genres and typical hot spots that Roberts regularly hits is the perfect cocktail for his fans of both sexes: men do not get tired of reading about ferocious showdowns using stabbing and firearms under sauce of mafia ideals, women are thrilled by the fatal love that Lin suffers for Carla, extrapolating feelings to themselves. Both of them admire the lengthy discourses with a claim to wisdom about fear, love, friendship and hope. nine0003

In fact, Roberts is treading water in the same place as in the first part of his Indian adventures. He did an excellent job of learning what the public liked (and didn’t like) in his debut book, and took it into account when writing his second. He stuffed the text with thoughtful statements, like a bun with raisins. True, this wisdom is often a rehashing of the aphorisms of previous generations of writers, but they are so well inscribed in the context that some secondary philosophical digressions are not repulsive. Love scenes are not lost in a series of showdowns, they are given increased, slightly cinematic attention, they take place in the pouring rain, on the roof of a high-rise building, in bed, with intertwined toes and occupy a third of the hero’s thoughts. nine0003

Certainly, “Shadow of the Mountain” will be a great success. Immerse yourself once again in the Bombay whirlwind of the underworld, survive the adrenaline rush of mafia skirmishes, watch Karla not letting go of Lin from a short leash of love – isn’t this what we have been waiting for all the years after the triumph of Shantaram? Of course this. The only “but”: without reading the first novel, “Shadow of the Mountain” is not perceived, after all, this is not an independent work.

To be continued…

Roberts lay low after the publication of Shadow of the Mountain: he stopped giving interviews, focused entirely on his family, and even stopped his active socially useful activities in his beloved Mumbai (the modern name of Bombay, in which the book takes place) . Perhaps, as promised many years ago, we have a trilogy before us, two parts of which have already been published, and the third is in the process of being written. nine0003

“Shantaram” sold around the world in the amount of four million copies, of which more than half a million walked around airports, train stations, living rooms and bedrooms in Russia. The sequel, Shadow of the Mountain, could very well repeat the success of the first book. In the midst of chaos, crime and loss, Roberts once again creates the real magic of words and meanings that can resonate in the hearts of readers.

“Fear is like a wolf on a chain: it is dangerous only when you let it off the chain. Grief can be overcome with forgetfulness. Anger, no matter how violent, can be overcome with a smile. And only hope is indestructible, because it does not belong to us, but to a small (at most a few hundred) group of our most ancient ancestors, whose courageous devotion and love for each other gave us almost all the good that is in us today. It is hope, this ancient seed planted in us, that nourishes our hearts and restores their strength. Since then, the consciousness of each of us has been balancing between two things that hope offers a choice: between the shadows of the past and the bright, clean, yet unfilled page of the coming day. nine0003

“Faith. It is present everywhere in every moment of our lives, even during sleep. Faith in mother, sister, brother or friend; the belief that around the corner at the intersection, a driver invisible to you will stop at a red light; faith in the pilots of the airliner and in the ground personnel who prepared the airliner for flight; faith in the teachers to whom we entrust our children for several hours a day; faith in cops, firefighters, and auto mechanics, as well as faith that a loved one will be waiting for you when you get home. But faith, unlike hope, can die. And when faith dies, the inseparable companions usually die with it: constancy and devotion.” nine0003

“Truth is the freedom of the soul. We are very young in our young universe and often fall short of expectations and lose honor, even if only in the dark corners of consciousness. We fight instead of dancing. We try to overtake others, deceive each other and punish innocent nature.

But this does not express our essence, it’s just what we do in the world that we have created for ourselves, and nothing prevents us from changing what we do and the world we have created at any moment. nine0003

In all really important matters we are united. In love and faith, trust and sympathy, relationships with loved ones and friends, sunsets and reverent singing, in every desire born of humanity, we are one. The human race, at this stage of its destiny, is a child mindlessly and senselessly blowing on a dandelion. But the feeling of a miracle experienced by a child is our common feeling, and there is no limit to the good that we can do when human hearts connect.
