AMERICA’S MOST ACCREDITED
We’re so proud!
Nationally only 10% of daycares are accredited – nearly 100% of our learning centers are. That’s a big difference,
and that means KinderCare kids are getting the very best. Here’s why.
SCHOOL-READY
What Learning Looks Like
Our talented early-childhood teachers set kids down the path toward becoming lifelong learners in a positive, safe, and nurturing environment.
Kingsport KinderCare Programs
Infant Programs (6 weeks–1 year)
Leaving your baby in someone else’s care is a big step. Everyone at our
centers—most importantly, our naturally gifted infant teachers—will work with
you to make sure the transition goes smoothly. When you step into our infant
classroom, you’ll see how much we want your infant to feel safe, loved, and
ready to explore their world.
Toddler Programs (1–2 Years)
Everything in our toddler classroom is designed for little explorers. That’s
because a lot is going on at this age. When your child is wandering all over the
place, that means they’re learning and discovering new things every day. We’ll
help them explore their interests (and find new ones!) as they play and learn.
Discovery Preschool Programs (2–3 Years)
This age is filled with so much wonder and curiosity. That’s why we offer a ton
of books and toys and bring artwork down to kids eye level. Children in
discovery preschool also begin to learn how we all work together in a
classroom. Simple math and science, pretend play, and group play help them
get used to a more structured school setting.
Preschool Programs (3–4 Years)
This age is all about expression, when kids really start to form their own ideas
about what they want to play and how they want to create. Every day in our
preschool classroom, your child will explore science experiments, create
artwork, and play pretend—all the skills needed for their big next step:
kindergarten!
Prekindergarten Programs (4–5 Years)
When you walk into one of our pre-K classrooms, you’ll see artwork and
writing displayed around the room. Labels are everywhere to help kids connect
letters with words. You’ll also see pictures on the walls that reflect the families
in our community. Your child will also deepen their knowledge in language,
math, science, Spanish, and social skills.
School Break Programs (preschool, prekindergarten, and school-age)
Winter break, spring break, summer break—when school’s out (but you still need to work), you
can count on KinderCare to provide a safe and supportive learning environment that’s focused
on fun. We welcome children ages 5–12 during school break times and make sure they have a
sensational, screen-free experience they won’t forget.
Learning Adventures – Enrichment Program
Cooking Academy™ (3 – 12 Years)
In Cooking Academy, kids learn new recipes from cultures around the world and
develop a healthy relationship with food. They’ll whip up everything from Southwest
rainbow lettuce wraps to pumpkin muffins, building their skills in STEM, communication,
and more along the way. And yes—little chefs get to eat their culinary creations!
Music Explorers™ (2 – 4 Years)
KinderCare families are already giving a standing ovation to our newest Learning
Adventures program: Music Explorers! Kids will learn to sing, move, listen, play
instruments, and even create their own tunes. Our original curriculum blends math,
science, social studies, literacy, and mindfulness (think yoga!) for a uniquely KinderCare
way of learning the foundations of music.
Phonics Adventures® (2 – 4 Years)
Learning how to read is a whole lot of fun at KinderCare! We help kids grow to love
books and words (and get ready for kindergarten) in our Phonics Adventures program.
From discovering the basics of vowels to practicing poetry, kids learn all about letters
and sounds in small-group lessons made just for their age group. (Bonus: Kids who
attend our phonics program are more prepared than their peers for school—and we
have the data to prove it. )
Our Teachers
We’re the only company in early childhood education to select teachers based on natural talent. Being a great educator isn’t enough though.
KinderCare teachers are also amazing listeners, nurturers, boo-boo fixers, and smile-makers. Put more simply,
we love our teachers and your child will, too.
Meet just a few of our amazing KinderCare teachers!
A KINDERCARE TEACHER WITH
An Artist’s Heart
“My classroom is full of art!” says Mary Annthipie-Bane, an award-winning early childhood educator at KinderCare. Art and creative expression, she says, help children discover who they really are.
We put our best-in-class teachers in a best-in-class workplace. We’re so proud to have been named one of Gallup’s 37 winners of the Great Workplace Award.
When you put great teachers in an engaging center, your children will experience
an amazing place to learn and grow.
Family Stories
Don’t take our word for it. Hear what our families have to say about our amazing center!
-
My daughter wakes up every day wanting to know if she is going to KinderCare today, even on the weekends. She enjoys everything about KinderCare, from art, field trips, playing with friends, science activities to Summer adventures. She never wants to leave.
As a parent, I love KinderCare because I know she is getting the care and attention that she needs. Her teachers plan activities and projects to keep her interested, which can be hard to do with a School Age child. I have the assurance that KinderCare is there and available when her elementary school is out for spring break, summer break or when it snows. I don’t have to worry when she is there because I have the assurance that she is safe and happy.Angela C. – KinderCare Parent

ADVENTURE KIDS
Active games, crafts, STEM, reading activities, and free play, Adventure Kids is all to make our youth stronger in spirit, mind and body. Plus, we do our best to build relationships and engage them in fun that will make a positive impact in their lives. At the Y, children and teens learn values and positive behaviors, and can explore their unique talents and interests, helping them realize their potential. That makes for confident kids today and contributing and engaged adults tomorrow. We believe the values and skills learned early on are vital building blocks for life. Because of the Y, more young people in neighborhoods around the nation are taking a greater interest in learning and making smarter life choices. The Y is helping kids awaken their brains and their body for a healthier life. The activities vary based on the number of kids and their ages. Our counselors do their best to adapt to the needs of the kids participating. Adventure Kids takes place in our Family Adventure Center, complete with a 24ft indoor playground structure, an adaptive climbing wall, a stage and plenty of room for free play. Gymnasium time for group games is also on the schedule, but sometimes the gym is traded for outdoor green space when the weather permits. Adventure Kids is for ages 5 (and in Kindergarten) through 12 and is available for anyone with a Family or Single Parent Family Membership.
Adventure Kids will not be open during certain days when kids are out of schools or when we are hosting a Schools Out Day at the YMCA. Please check our website for dates and updates for when Adventure Kids is closed.

History
Native Americans lived in the Lenoir City area thousands of years before the arrival of the first European settlers. On Bussell Island, which lies across the Tennessee River to the south, archaeologists have found evidence of habitation dating as far back as the Archaic period (8000–1000 BC). It is believed that the island also hosted the village of Coste, which was visited by a Spanish explorer. Hernando de Soto in 1540 [7]
Historic Cherokee area called Lenoir City Wa’ginsi , and believed that this was the home of a large serpent that brought bad luck to anyone who saw it. [8] By the early 19th century, one of the early pioneers of East Tennessee, Judge David Campbell, laid claim to part of what is now Lenoir City, where he built a log cabin and cabin. mill. [9]
The William Ballard Lenoir House, built in 1821, is now part of Ledbetter Apartments.
In the early 19th century, the state of North Carolina granted General William Lenoir a 5,000-acre (2,000 ha) tract of land, which included what developed as Lenoir City, as payment for his services in the American Revolutionary War. David Campbell and another early settler, Alexander Outlaw, filed a lawsuit against Lenoir, claiming that they had already laid claim to parts of the Lenoir tract.
After the case was settled in Lenoir’s favor in 1809, Lenoir passed the treatise on to his eldest son, William Ballard Lenoir (1775–1852). In 1810, the younger Lenoir, together with his wife, moved to the tract and founded a large plantation. Its workforce consisted of enslaved African Americans. Lenoir’s agricultural enterprise included the production of ham from a herd of Berkshire pigs. He also developed several small industries, including a sawmill and a flour mill. In the early 1830s, he built the Lenoir Cotton Mill – one of the first in the South – located on the banks of Town Creek, a tributary of the Tennessee River. [9]
After Lenoir’s death, his estate was divided among his children. His sons founded the William Lenoir and Brothers Company to manage the family business. When the railroad reached Lenoir Plantation in 1855, a depot was built. The community of Lenoir station developed around it. [9]
During the Civil War, the Lenoirs supported the Confederacy, in part because of ties to Confederate business interests in Knoxville. (One of Lenoir’s sons was married to the daughter of J. G. M. Ramsey, a historian and banker from Knoxville, an ardent Confederate). [9] On June 20, 1863, a Union reconnaissance expedition led by General William P. Sanders arrived at Lenoir station after failing to destroy the railway trestle at Loudon. Sanders burned down the depot, sawmill, and Lenoir’s flour mill. He spared the cotton factory because there were few such factories in the area that would provide the army with cloth. In addition, both he and the Lenoirs were Masons. [10]

Late 1880s saw an abundance of financial capital, the popularity of social theories about planned cities, and a thriving coal mining industry in East Tennessee. The Cumberland Plateau region has led to the development of a number of urban businesses to support coal mining in the Upper Tennessee Valley. Most of these were funded by investors from the Northeast or Knoxville.
In 1889, Knoxville railroad magnate Charles McClung McGee and his friend and associate, Edward J. Sanford, formed the Lenoir City Company. They believed that Lenoir’s plantation would be an ideal place for the development of such a city. A company incorporated in April 1890 with $800,000 worth of shares, [9] , and bought the Lenoir estate, which then consisted of 2,700 acres (1,100 ha), at $300 an acre. [9] When the company issued shares to the public, each of the investors received company shares and a site in the planned city. [11]
Lenoir City was laid out on a four-quadrant grid west of Town Creek and north of the railroad tracks. The northwest quadrant of the city was planned for the middle class and wealthy residents, while the northeast quadrant was intended for urban wage workers. The southwest quadrant will house heavy industries such as blast furnaces, steel mills, and other large industries, while the southeast quadrant will house woodworking, furniture, and canning factories. Influenced by the reform movements of the late 19th century, which emphasized health and moderation, the developers set aside several sites for public parks, and a large garden was planned between the railroad tracks and the river. [11]
Lenoir City struggled with the recession that froze the financial markets in the early 1890s. By 1892, the company had sold only 144 of the city’s 3,448 lots. McGee and Sanford, however, persisted, and while Lenoir City never developed as fully as they intended, it survived. McGee persuaded the Carriage Company to open a factory in Lenoir City, and a knitting factory was established shortly thereafter. In 1910, both factories employed several hundred workers. [12]
20th century
Lenoir City in 1940
The Great Depression, a series of federal government projects provided the necessary boost to the city of Lenoir’s economy and invested in regional infrastructure. The Tennessee Valley Authority Construction of the Fort Loudoun Dam and Reservoir, begun in 1940, provided employment for hundreds of local residents. It also led to numerous road improvements and the generation of hydroelectric power to electrify the region.
During the 1950s and 1960s, construction associated with the Interstate Highway System resulted in the construction of I-75 and I-40, two transnational highways that intersect northeast of Lenoir City. US Highway 321 was built through Lenoir City in the 1980s primarily to provide greater access to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, about 40 miles (64 km) down the road in Blount County.
On February 21, 1993 at 5:05 pm, an F-3 tornado touched down in eastern Roan County (west of the city) and proceeded east-southeast directly towards the city. The tornado devastated part of the city. Parts of downtown, as well as the area near A Street and 5th Avenue, were destroyed. Lenoir City High School/High School property suffered major damage (it was redeveloped as River Oaks Place). The tornado continued east-southeast, passing through the city of Friendsville and then rising in western Maryville. According to the NWS Tornado database, the death toll was 1 (in the city of Lenoir) and 55 people were injured. [13]
In March 1998, the historic William B. Lenoir Hotel, a block of Broadway (US 11) between A and B Streets, was destroyed by a massive fire. The entire block was lost as it was built with a shared attic and basement, meaning there were no firewalls between the buildings. Wilburn’s barbershop, the Lenoir City Public Library, a Mexican grocery store, offices for Readers TV magazine and Habitat for Humanity, the school’s photography company and photo finishing lab, and several apartments were destroyed by fire. [14] This block has been redeveloped as Roan State Community College, the Tennessee Career Center, and the new Lenoir Public Library.
21st century
Lenoir City’s economy expanded in the early 2000s. New businesses developed along U.S. Route 321, where new franchised restaurants such as Ruby Tuesday, Chili’s, Cracker Barrel, Aubrey’s, and Zaxby’s were added. New stores included Home Depot, Goody’s Family Clothing (now defunct), Cato, and Blockbuster Video (also defunct). A new hospital, Fort Loudon Medical Center, was built to replace the old Loudon Fort Sander Hospital in nearby Loudon.
Two major commercial developments were announced in the late 2000s. Creekwood Park is located parallel to I-75 between US-321 and US-70. A new four-lane road has been built between the two highways. An elite residential complex was built on part of the site. In 2014, business development finally began in this area, several medical offices were built. From 2016 to 2017, the city built a new community center called “The Venue” and a new headquarters for the City of Lenoir Public Utilities Board.
Dr. Bob Overholt, local physician and broadcaster, announced another event: Town Creek Market planned to connect US-321 and Harrison Road near Lenoir City High School and High School. New businesses include a Food City grocery store, a Bojangles restaurant, a Knoxville TVA employee credit union, an AT&T store, a Pizza Hut, and a sun deck. In 2013, Town Creek Parkway, a four-lane road connecting US-321 and Harrison Road, was completed.
In 2016, the city opened its first female City Council member, Jennifer Wampler. She was appointed to the remainder of her term, vacated by the death of her late husband, Harry Wampler.
Geography
US Highway 321 (Lamar Alexander Parkway) in Lenoir City
Lenoir City is located at 35°47′51″N. 84°16′16″W / 35.79750°N 84.27111°W / 35.79750; -84.27111 (35.797618, -84.271103). [15] The Tennessee River and TVA’s Fort Loudon and Watts Bar Reservations provide the city’s southern boundary. Four major federal highways run through Lenoir City: U.S. Route 11, which runs roughly parallel to the river bank, crosses the city from east to west; US Route 321, which crosses the Fort Loudon Dam just south of the city, crosses the city from north to south. Interstate 75 and US Route 70 intersect US-321 at the northern end of the city. I-75 provides access to the city from Exit 81 and leads northeast 42 kilometers to downtown. Knoxville (via junction with I-40), and southwest 91 miles (146 km) to Chattanooga. US 321 passes through downtown from the southeast to the northwest, leading northwest 7 miles (11 km) to I-40 at exit 364 (the highway’s northern terminus) and east 20 miles (32 km) to Maryville. US 70 runs north of the city, heading northeast 9 miles (14 km) to Farragut and northwest 19 miles (31 km) to Kingston. US 11 runs through downtown leading northeast to Farragut and Knoxville and southwest 7 miles (11 km) to the city of Loudon.
Lenoir City is traditionally located along US-11, west of the intersection with US-321. This part of the city still roughly follows the grid plan laid out in the 1890s. In recent decades, Lenoir City has annexed a 5-mile (8.0 km) corridor of land along US-321 between its US-11 junction and the I-40 junction. This corridor includes the city’s new commercial district, which handles the high volume of traffic delivered to the area via I-75 and I-40.

Rob AmbergRob Amberg (Born in 1947 in Washington, Kolumbia) , North Carolina photographer, folklorist, and chronicler of the small mountain community of Madison County, Revere, North Carolina (also known as Sodom or Sodom Laurel), which he portrayed in his Laurel album of Sodom . [1] [2] [3] [4] Amberg was awaiting the completion of I-26 from Charleston, South Carolina to the Tennessee Tri-City area (Bristol-Kingsport-Johnson City) and, starting in 1994, began photographing, interviewing, and collecting objects to document a section of the nine-mile stretch of I-26 through some of North Carolina’s most spectacular views and some of the world’s oldest mountains—a project that contributed to the publication of his book New road . [5] [6] His documentary photographs are held in the collection at the Duke University Library. [7] Content
biographyAmberg was educated in Catholic schools and graduated from the University of Dayton in 1969. While there, he produced a slide-tape presentation that introduced him to photography as a tool for social change. After college, he was granted Conscientious Objector project status and spent two and a half years in Tucson, Arizona, where he taught kindergarten as an alternative service. While in Tucson, he produced his “first published photographs—a story about street preachers in a downtown park—and held his first solo exhibition at the Spectrum Gallery.” In 2011, he began working with the American Forest Fund, documenting the relationship between tree farmers and their land. In 2011, he delivered the keynote speech at the American Tree Farm Convention. In July 2012, Amberg began working as a visiting artist at Duke University, working specifically with the Madison County High School Literacy Project. Since moving to the mountains of North Carolina in 1973, Amberg has been keen to participate in and document mountain life. He lives with his wife, Lesley Stilwell, “on a small farm where they grow orchards and grow shiitake mushrooms, look after various animals, burn wood, and drink water from a mountain spring.” [1] Documentary seriesSeries at the David M. Rubinstein Rare Book and Manuscript Library at Duke University include: New Road: I-26 and Traces of Progress , 1978-2004; Sodom Laurel Album , 1975-2001; Endangered agricultural crop , 1984-1999; Correspondence series , 1995-2009 And no date; Printing Series , 1976-2008 And no date; Series Theme Files, 1987-2002 And no date; Letters and research series , 1990s-2008 And no date; and Audio Series , 1997-2001. [7] Duke University ArchivesA summary of the Rob Amberg Collection on Duke specifically states: “The gelatin silver engravings and pigmented inkjet color prints in the collection represent three pieces: New road: I-26 and traces of progress ; Sodom Laurel Album ; and Endangered agricultural crop . Amberg focuses primarily on the social life and customs of the rural South, especially in the mountains of his home state of North Carolina. The images range from landscape shots taken before and during the construction of an interstate highway in the mountains of North Carolina, to portraits of people and families affected by changes in rural culture.” [7] Awards and distinctionsHe has received awards from the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the North Carolina Council for the Humanities, the Center for Documentary Research, and others. In 1998, Rob Amberg and Sam Gray received the Lange-Taylor Award for “I-26: A Corridor of Change” about the changes associated with the construction of a highway in a remote part of the city of Appalachia. In 2004 presented Album Sodom Laurel to the Library of Congress. Amberg Photo BooksHe wrote The Sodom Laurel Album , [8] [9] which tells the story of the once isolated North Carolina community of Sodom Laurel, a place on the brink of change. It’s about the people who live there and the traditional mountain music that brings them together. Doug Wallin, a member of the Wallin family of singers and ballad singer and narrator Sheila Kay Adams are also featured in this book. [10] [11] Laurel album of Sodom was published in 2002 by the Center for Documentary Research at Duke and the University of North Carolina Press. [12] In 1994, Amberg began documenting the construction of a new highway, the largest earthmoving project in the history of North Carolina, passing through the most rural and rugged areas of Madison County. This project became a book, New Road . This book was published in 2009 by the American Landmarks Center at Columbia College Chicago. Quartet is a collection of art by photographers Rob Amberg, Elizabeth Matheson, John Rosenthal, and Caroline Vaughan. [13] ExhibitionsRob Amberg Exhibition Sodom Laurel and Sheila Kay Adams’ banjo playing, traditional ballad singing and storytelling were featured on Art6 in 2004, a few months after that gallery moved from Artspace to Richmond, Virginia. Additionally, Amberg gave a talk at Art6 along with Virginia-based photographer Jesse Andrews, who has also photographed tobacco town extensively, and both photographers shared their experiences. [14] SodomSong was an exhibition of photographs by Amberg, intended to accompany the district part of the National Endowment for the Humanities “suitcase” exhibition called New Harmonies . [15] The Z. Smith Reynolds Library at Wake Forest University presented the photographic exhibition Above Amberg and its accompanying documentary, also called Above and produced by Kim Dryden and Joe Cornelius in the largest exhibition in the library’s history. The film follows folk singer Sheila Kay Adams “as she struggles to keep her family’s ballad traditions alive while trying to overcome the loss of her husband.” 9 “Rob Amberg: Forty Years in the Appalachians – The Devil’s Tale”. Great Britain and America have a lot in common. Common holidays, dates and even customs

Over the years, many memorable events have been preserved in the festive culture.
dates, and there are many ways to celebrate a particular date. Although
All holidays are varied to some extent, but there is something in common between many
English speaking countries.
Based on the above in the previous chapters, you can make one
main conclusion: the cultural and political traditions of the United States and Great Britain are largely
are very similar. The reason for this similarity is the historical past.
these states. Perhaps it would be appropriate to say that the United States is the brainchild of
Great Britain. How the young state of the USA built its future,
based on democratic principles, and the absence of their historical
traditions and principles contributed to the borrowing of various elements from others
peoples. Great Britain became the “closest” such nation to the USA.
Let’s understand the similarities and differences of cultural traditions
celebrations of significant dates in the UK and the USA.
The main winter holiday – New Year’s Eve for the UK
can only be called a continuation of the festive Christmas days. He is not so
dearly loved and not so widely celebrated. While Americans love this
holiday and celebrate it very noisily starting from December 31st. Tournament of Roses and Parade
pantomimes are associated with the celebration of the new year. The origins of their traditions originated
even in the middle of the last century. Parades are held in major US cities, and in
Great Britain on Trafalgar Square in London put the main Christmas tree of the country.
Christmas
beloved holiday of the British, but it is also widespread among
Americans. It is celebrated on December 25th. This is a Christian holiday, which is usually
celebrated for several days.
Preparing for this holiday, Americans put a Christmas tree in the largest room of the house.
and decorate it with toys and candles, this tradition first appeared among the British.
They began decorating the house and giving gifts of hanging plants such as
holly, ivy and mistletoe. “Each of these plants is associated in its own way with
divine beginning . On this day, the custom of giving gifts appeared,
which finally established itself in Victorian England, before that with gifts
exchanged on the New Year or on the Twelfth Night (the feast of the Epiphany). giving
give someone a gift people usually say “Merry Christmas!” – “Merry Christmas!”. AT
in both countries, children hang stockings on the fireplace and wait for Santa Claus to come at night and
put gifts in it. This custom also originated in Victorian Britain.
“For him, there is such an explanation: “Christmas grandfather” traveled through
air and entered the houses through the chimney. Going down to one of the houses, he
dropped some gold coins into a sock that was hung to dry over the hearth.
Since then, on Christmas Eve, socks and stockings have been hung on the fireplace in
hope that something will fall there.

March is St. Patrick’s Day in both the US and the UK. it
originally an Irish holiday that has British roots. Saint Patrick
became so popular in the United States, where the Irish population is quite large, that
the day of the death of this saint is celebrated on a national scale.
B
St. Patrick’s Day, everything is green. Green hats, suits, green
shamrock as a symbol of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. In the US, this
the holiday is most widely celebrated in New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Chicago and
Atlanta, where the Irish population is the largest. By tradition in Britain this
day there are costumed parades with brass bands, it is believed that this
the tradition was brought by the Americans. In America every year there is a big street parade
in New York, when the Irish march down the main street of the city, symbolizing
thus the triumph of the Catholic faith, and on a festive morning in the Cathedral
Saint Patrick’s morning mass is held. Every year tens of thousands of pilgrims
many of which, barefoot, climb the holy mountain “Croagh Patrick”,
765 m above sea level. Today, St. Patrick’s – a holiday of spring and
joy, which is celebrated not only in Ireland, Great Britain, but also far
outside of them.
Celebration
Valentine’s Day February 14 in the UK started earlier than in
USA. This day is named after the Christian martyr Valentine.
who was sentenced to death. An order was issued forbidding marriage, but
Valentine disobeyed and secretly married the lovers. In the UK, a special place in
This day is devoted to flowers. As you know, there is a whole alphabet of colors,
through which you can express all your feelings. The British borrowed
the tradition of giving flowers for this holiday among the French at the beginning of the 18th century, and
Americans at the beginning of the last century on Valentine’s Day began to send
marzipan to your loved ones. Later, after the start of caramel production on
sweets began to scratch out the words corresponding to the holiday. Sweets were
red and white. Red meant passion, and white meant purity of love. But the Americans
added to all the others one more tradition: a week before the holiday, schoolchildren
cut out figures in the form of a heart from papier-mâché, paint and make various
inscriptions, and then give to lonely, unfortunate and sick people. The British also
there is a similar tradition: in addition to the gift, they give each other valentines –
postcards in the form of a heart. Now you can buy a variety of valentines,
but the inscription remains unchanged on all postcards: “To You, with Love from
Valentine”.
1
April in these countries is celebrated April Fool’s Day . If in Russia this day is
usually begins with a joke: “Wake up! Overslept for work!”, then in the USA
the media every year, for fun, announce the list of the most stupid
people of the country, warning that they are joking. Some people think that this day
was previously celebrated in many countries as the day of the spring solstice, which
accompanied by jokes, pranks and funny tricks. In Scotland this day
called Cuckoo Day. Usually in the UK, jokes are played on friends and
acquaintances, but the media also takes part. True, there is one feature – time
draws are limited – only until noon.
Day
Mothers in the UK and USA is similar to March 8 in Russia. Roots in the UK
This holiday goes back to Victorian times when children lived and worked
away from their parents, and they were only allowed to visit them once a year. In that
day they gave their parents small gifts – bouquets of flowers and fresh eggs. AT
USA “The origins of the celebration of Mother’s Day, perhaps, should be sought in the holidays of spring,
which the inhabitants of ancient Greece dedicated to Rhea, the mother of the gods. From 1600
year, in England there was a tradition of celebrating Mother’s Sunday. In that
the day, which fell on the fourth Sunday of Lent, mothers were honored.
B
United States Mother’s Day was first publicly celebrated in 1872
Julia Ward Howe, author of the Republican anthem. Calling to dedicate this day
world, every year she organized mass rallies in honor of Mother’s Day in
Boston.” In terms of popularity, this holiday is in fifth place among Americans.
after Valentine’s Day, Father’s Day, Easter and Christmas. On this day children
bring gifts to their mothers and spend some time with her. And in
Great Britain this day passes quite calmly. The women rest and the men
doing housework and preparing dinner.
Other
a holiday celebrated in both countries – Halloween – the eve of All Day
saints. It is celebrated on October 31st. They say that this holiday is at least two
thousand years. “This controversial holiday takes its origins from Celtic culture. At
Celts existed “the beginning of the seasons.” There were four of them. Samhain
marked the arrival of winter and was celebrated on October 31st.
B
In the 7th century, Pope Boniface IV approved November 1 as All Saints Day,
wishing to distract the English people from pagan customs. November 2 later became Day
Shower – when they commemorated all the dead. However, traditions have been preserved in folk
memory, and it was not possible to defeat them to the end. According to another version of his
The Mexicans brought Halloween to America. Now in USA
every year the children dress up in costumes and go house to house to collect candy.
There is a whole code on what kind of candy to give to children. By
When they return home, the parents check which sweets the children have brought. All celebration
ends around 8 pm. On this day, it is also customary to instill fear
on the people, even the media take part in this. After all, Halloween in the USA is,
“in fact, an all-American carnival for which people prepare costumes for a year.”
The tradition of carving holiday lanterns from pumpkins and putting a candle inside was introduced
namely the Americans. Before that, they cut them out of turnips, potatoes, and in England they
beets. Recently, in the United States, a tradition has appeared to play with the symbol of Halloween.
on this day in bowling, but the rules remain the same – who knocked down more balls
and won.
So many
traditions and customs came from Great Britain to the USA and acquired their own features, but
they still go back to the past of Great Britain. For many
centuries, they managed to survive and survive, as well as remain relevant in
modern world of high technology. These customs and traditions still exist today.
and attract many people interested in the study of history and
UK and US cultures.
3.2 Selection
national holidays for children learning English as a foreign language
Learning a foreign language
impossible without contact with the culture, traditions and history of the people,
inhabiting the country. Language and culture are closely interrelated, and this fact does not require
evidence. In the process of mastering a foreign language, a number of
facts that are not related to the study of vocabulary, grammar, phonetics or
style, but rather to the spheres of social, domestic or historical.
Pre-school age especially
favorable for starting to learn a foreign language: children of this age
are particularly sensitive to linguistic phenomena, they have an interest in
understanding their speech experience, the “secrets” of the language. They easily and firmly remember
a small amount of language material and reproduce it well. With age
these favorable factors lose their force.
There is another reason why
early age is preferable for learning a foreign language. The younger
child, the less his vocabulary in his native language, the less
knowledge about the world as a whole.
Learning the culture of a foreign language
in parallel with lexical and grammatical material, the child simultaneously
replenishes his knowledge about the world around him, both his native country and the country of the studied
language.
But at the same time, his speech
needs: a small child has fewer areas of communication than an older child, he still
do not have to solve complex communication problems. That means mastering
foreign language, he does not feel such a huge gap between the possibilities
in his native and foreign languages, and his sense of success will be more vivid than that of
older children.
Holidays, a lot to do with
positive emotions and happy memories. For a child of any age, a holiday is
not only weekend and cultural traditions of the native country, but also the opportunity to more
spend time with family. Therefore, the association with the holiday is always
is positive and this is significant when introducing the cultural traditions of the country of the studied
language. When getting acquainted with the holidays of Great Britain and America, a child
a positive attitude towards the language being studied is automatically formed.
Analyzing the above
material and features of the development of preschool children, singled out from
national holidays of Great Britain and the United States of America are as follows
holidays that, in my opinion, will be interesting for children when learning English
language.

Conclusion
the main cultural traditions of the USA and Great Britain. In many ways they were similar
since the United States took over a certain part of them from England, and some developed into
the course of time in both of these states, which was due to the spread
principles of democracy throughout the world. Historical traditions are of interest from
the point of view of an ordinary layman, or a person interested in distinctive
features of a given state.
In the course of my work, all
the assigned tasks were completed. We got acquainted with national holidays
UK and USA. We studied their role in the cultural life of the country. Revealed similarities
and differences in cultural traditions regarding common holidays, explored the features
holding common holidays and festivals in each of these two countries.
As a result of the work, we picked up
the most suitable activities for joint celebration in preschool
educational institution in the program of teaching English as a foreign language.
The goal of the project has been achieved because I
studied the national holidays of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and
United States of America, and also selected the most appropriate holidays for
perceptions of pupils of a preschool educational institution, in order to
increasing motivation to learn English as a foreign language.
I’m sure it works

help children and adults expand their knowledge on this topic. Besides,
the material I have collected can be used in country studies lessons at school, and
may also be interesting and useful to all those who often travel, study
English or just enjoys learning the traditions of different countries and wants to
expand your knowledge in this area.

Historical
it so happened that for many years the British Empire owned numerous
colonies. The British preferred to educate their children in the best schools in the metropolis.
Therefore, the schools were boarding in nature – the children saw their parents or
weekends, or generally 2-3 times a year on vacation. This trend in many
schools in the UK is still preserved.

In many countries of the world, this is the Day of Knowledge. In the UK, as well as in our
country, children go to school in early September. But the age of first graders is 5
years.
Academic year in
England starts, like ours in September. What is unusual for us – schools
They don’t always open on the first day of the month, and certainly not on Monday.
Probably, according to the British, Monday is not the best day to go to school.
The first Tuesday in September is a great day to go to school.
Lessons here start at 9:00. They do not have time to start studying, as already at 11:00
a glass of milk or orange juice awaits them. 12:30-13:00 everyone is already going to lunch.
Lessons in England are a little different than in Russia. Here for children often
games, movie screenings, communication with animals and so on. And one more
plus: in this country they don’t go to classes on Saturday and Sunday.

Apple Day
Apple Day is an unofficial holiday that takes place annually in the UK.
October 21 (or the nearest day off to this date).
Annual
event dedicated to apples, orchards and local
attractions, which is arranged on the initiative of a charitable
Common Ground organization since 1990. The organizers believe that Apple Day is
it is a celebration and demonstration of the diversity and richness of nature, as well as
incentive and sign to the fact that we ourselves are able to influence the changes taking place
around. The idea of the Day is that the apple is a symbol of the physical,
cultural and genetic diversity, which man should not forget.
Apple Day
you can see and taste hundreds of different varieties of apples, and many of them
available varieties are not sold in conventional stores. Nursery staff
offer to buy rare varieties of apple trees. Often a service is involved in the holiday
identification of apples, which will determine what kind of apple you brought from the garden. A with
“apple doctor” can discuss all the problems of apple trees in your garden.
On the day of the holiday, a competition is held for the longest strip of peel (The
Longest Peel Competition), which is obtained by peeling an apple. Competition
it is carried out both for manual cleaning of an apple, and for cleaning with a machine
or other device. The longest apple peel is listed in the Book
Guinness records. The world record entry reads: the record for the longest
broken apple peel belongs to American Kathy Walfer, who
peeled an apple for 11 hours and 30 minutes and got a peel 52 meters long 51
centimeter. The record was set on 16 October 1976 years old in New York.
Halloween .
Halloween.
Halloween (English Halloween, All Hallows’ Eve or All Saints’ Eve) —
a modern holiday dating back to the traditions of the ancient Celts of Ireland and Scotland, whose history began on
the territory of present-day Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
According to Oxford
dictionary of the English language, the word “Halloween” was first mentioned in the 16th century as
Scottish abbreviation of the English phrase All-Hallows-Even
all saints ). So at that time they called the night before All Saints’ Day.
This holiday was associated with the end of summer and supernatural forces. Eve
All Saints’ Day is traditionally considered the only day of the year when spirits
the dead can return to earth.
Halloween traces its history back to an old Celtic holiday called
Samhain. Celts (the ancient people who inhabited Britain) on this day
marked the end of field work and the onset of winter. So pagan
the holiday merged with the church holiday and became popularly loved not only in
Britain, but throughout the world.
A tradition developed around the 16th century
begging for sweets on the night of October 31st. Children and adults wore cloth
masks and went from one door to another, demanding treats from the owners and petty shawls.
The custom of wearing role-playing costumes and
to carry a “jack-o’-lantern” appeared only
at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, and in exchange for money or food, you initially need
was to offer different entertainment.
Carnival dress
costumes are a relatively recent element of the holiday. For the first time as
a full-fledged custom it was recorded at the beginning of the 20th century. Halloween costumes have evolved a lot.
for the past century. Initially, the costumes were images of ugly, emaciated faces.
of people. It looked far from festive and quite frightening. But to the beginning
2000, the costumes acquired more and more vivid images and the holiday itself turned into
in the show.
Asking

treat) – is an important element of the celebration of Halloween. dressed up in
costumes children go from house to house and ask for sweets, if they are refused they can and

It is considered to decorate your home according to the holiday. In festive
the decoration of houses use the attributes of autumn – pumpkins, jack-o’-lanterns,
village scarecrows. In addition, they also use scary passers-by, scary
faces. The main colors in the decoration of houses are black and orange.
Because
the holiday falls on the time of the harvest of apples, most of the Halloween sweets
based on apples. Apple caramel is prepared specially for the celebration, apples in
syrup (sometimes with the addition of nuts), apple toffee. In addition to various
sweets, there is a traditional barmbrack bread, which is prepared in
Ireland for various holidays, especially Halloween. When cooking
festive barmbreak, peas, a wooden chip, a piece of
cloth, coin and ring. The object that came across to the eater predicted the future:
peas – do not wait for an imminent wedding, sliver – family troubles

taken to guess. For example, you can find references to divination using
peel: Scottish girls cut the peel off apples, trying to make it
as long as possible, and thrown over the shoulder. It was believed that the fallen peel
took the form of the first letter of the surname of the betrothed. Another custom was based on the well-known
belief about Bloody Mary, which today has become
popular urban legend. This divination was that the young
the girls had to go up the stairs in a dark house with their backs forward and
hold a candle in front of a mirror. After that, the mirror supposedly should have
appear the face of her future husband, but the girl could see in the mirror and
skull – this meant that she would die without marrying. In America
the tradition of guessing is not common, but on the eve of Halloween it is customary to arrange
noisy parties and tell scary stories.
The main symbol of the holiday is the so-called Lamp
Jack ( English Jack-o’-lantern – Jack Lantern). He
represents a pumpkin, on which an ominously grinning face is carved, and
a lit candle is placed inside the gourd.

and prevented the assassination of King James 1. According to the plan of the conspirators in
basement of the Chamber
Lords were
hidden powder kegs. The explosion was supposed to take place on November 5 during
utterance by the king of the throne speech. As a result of the betrayal of one of
members of the conspiracy, Guy Fawkes was captured at the moment when he was about to set fire to
wick. On the day that the conspirators were executed, joyful royal subjects
they began to burn fires in the streets, burning an effigy of Guy Fawkes on them. The authorities picked up
this custom since 1605. The celebration of “Guy Fawkes Night” personified such
concepts like loyalty to the king and the Protestant faith, contempt for betrayal.
In the UK, on Guy Fawkes night, fireworks and bonfires are lit, on which an effigy of Guy Fawkes is burned. And the day before the children beg
coins “for the great guy Guy” to buy firecrackers.
Usually the celebration is not limited to one day. Weekend before November 5
and after it, fireworks are launched in city parks, costumed
balls and shows.

Great Britain, as in other countries, there was a mixture of Christian teachings

the literal meaning is “Box Day”. There is no big contradiction here, because
we mean here precisely those boxes into which traditionally, before

Exists
several versions of how the name of the holiday came about:
1. In
Great Britain traditionally on the second day of Christmas the family packed the leftovers

Christmas traditions, on the night of December 24-25, Santa Claus puts gifts under the New Year tree. In the morning,
when everyone wakes up, they start opening boxes in which
there are holiday gifts. If the family is large and large, then the house
is filled with empty boxes, which children are not always in a hurry to clean up, because they
attention is focused on the content. Apparently, therefore, this day began to be called in
English-speaking countries “box day”, but when translated into a number of languages, it was considered that
the name “Boxing Day” is more euphonious.

another version is that the name of the holiday was given by the boxes with which the recipients

Saint Valentine’s.
St. Valentine’s Day, or Valentine’s Day is a holiday,
which is celebrated on February 14 in many countries of the world.
Presumably named after one of the two early Christian martyrs with

Marking this
the holiday is given to beloved and dear people with flowers, sweets, toys, air
balloons and special cards (often in the shape of a heart), with poems, love
confessions or wishes of love – valentines.
In the UK, Valentine’s Day has been celebrated since ancient times. AT
in previous years, on Valentine’s Day, it even happened that the British congratulated
each other in secret, and the couple was chosen by lot! By the end of the seventeenth century in
In England, the same valentines familiar to us today have gained popularity. Truth
then they were made by hand, who is what much. Sometimes made from colored paper and
decorated with bright ink. Sometimes they pierced with pins, like lace, and
decorated with a regular stencil, like schoolchildren!
In the Middle Ages in Great Britain there was a tradition to choose one’s own
“Valentine”. Several men got together, wrote on pieces
parchment the names of women, put them in a hat and drew lots. Name
of a girl that a guy took out made her this man’s “Valentine” on
a whole year. These relationships were built in the spirit of a knight and a lady of the heart. A man must

Mothers.
Mother’s Day in
Great Britain (Mother’s Day or Mothering Sunday) is similar to March 8 in Russia.
Its roots go back to Victorian times, when children at a fairly early age
worked away from home, and the money they earned was sent to the family
budget. Then one day a year children were allowed to spend at home with
parents. Usually they brought mothers and grandmothers small gifts –
bouquets of flowers or fresh eggs. Today, British children on this day give
mothers flowers and do their homework for them.
The earliest honoring of the mother is rooted in the ancient Greek spring
festival in honor of the goddess Rei, wife of the god Kronos and mother of numerous gods and
goddesses. And around 250 BC, ceremonies began to be held in Rome,
praising another mother goddess named Cybele. These religious Roman

Traditionally, in
countries such as New Zealand, Ireland, United Kingdom, Australia and South

this time, “April Fools”.
Believe that
April 1 was originally celebrated in many countries as the spring solstice.
The spring solstice festivities were accompanied by jokes, pranks and
fun tricks.
In the UK, this is the only day on which journalists are allowed to
relax and in an adult way “cheat” readers. And every year they come up with
new pranks, sometimes these “innocent” jokes turn into a big public
resonance. Surprisingly, the stiff British, reading their newspapers or
watching programs on television, annually become victims of their own
credulity.
A famous hoax took place in London in 1860, when several hundred
English gentlemen with their prim English ladies received invitations,
on behalf of the queen herself, to arrive “at the annual solemn ceremony of washing
white lions, which will be held in the Tower at 11 am on April 1. AT

call it “All Fools’ Day”.
In different parts of England, the fool is called differently, where “Noodle”
(Noodles), “Noddy”, where “April Gawby” or “Gob” … Almost all names take their own
beginning with the medieval festival “Feast of Fools”, where men dressed in
women, where they drank, ate and gambled at the very altar, burned old
leather sandals in a censer and did many other unimaginable things in a normal
life of things. In Scotland, April Fools’ Day is known as “Cuckoo’s Day”
called “Kuku”, which means “crazy”. This day is also called “Day of the Tail”,
an inscription with the words “Kick me” is glued on the back of the victim, a lot of jokes
associated with the lower back.
On the day of laughter, it was customary to play pranks on each other, and also to make each other
friend to do pointless stupid errands, such as fetching sweets
vinegar, find chicken teeth, get striped paint, measure the length of the weight,
buy a left-hand screwdriver or something else that never existed in

May day .
May
holiday.
Tradition to celebrate
May day in Britain goes back to the early Middle Ages. Then there was
the great Celtic festival of Beltane, which marked the beginning
summer and was held on May 1. The holiday had a religious pagan meaning and was
dedicated to the god of the sun and fertility Belenus. On this day the druids brought
Belenus symbolic sacrifices. Bonfires were kindled on elevated places, between
which all the inhabitants passed, and also drove away livestock for purification and
protection from diseases. And to protect against evil spirits, it was customary to hang on the door
May Souk and plant May Bush in the yard from rowan branches and decorate it like
Christmas tree.
Currently
The British celebrate May Day with street processions and folk
festivities. Musicians, jugglers on stilts, minstrels and working around
the squares of the tavern create a genuine atmosphere of a medieval carnival here.
On this day, the people dance under the Maypole, decorated with colorful
ribbons, dress up as Jack-in-the-Green, wrapping themselves in
a small gazebo of fresh greenery. Jack and his flowers dance through the cities
collecting money for a later celebration in the evening. In many villages, young
people cut down trees and set them up like a Maypole (pole) in the center
villages. Each such pillar was a gathering place for the rural community to dance and
events. Various competitions were organized everywhere: from catching dirty
pig before churning butter, so that many villagers had the opportunity
take home a beautiful prize. There were even competitions for children, and soon
the kids could boast of the won ribbons, toys and bells. Young people go out into nature and arrange picnics. AT
In general, May Day is a life-affirming holiday that brings spring
atmosphere.
On this day, the king and queen of May are chosen to lead the events in
this day. In the Middle Ages, on this day, girls washed themselves with dew, believing that it
will make them irresistible for the whole next year. Even on this holiday always
archery competitions were held. There must have been national
dances and songs. And you can also remember the national hero – Robin Hood.
It was on this day that, according to one of the legends, he was captured by the Sheriff of Nottinghamshire. Robin
could not help but demonstrate his skills in competitions
by shooting. It was this love of competition that allowed the sheriff to capture him.

“If you donate $1.90 – You can give a hot meal to a homeless person or
poor compatriot. By donating $19, you will help feed 10 people…”
etc. On the eve of the holiday, charitable organizations distribute to those in need
collected gifts, and dinners are organized for the homeless. The second most important attribute
Thanksgiving – turkey. At the first holiday, the colonists and Indians fried and
together they ate four turkeys shot in the nearby forest. Since
turkey and Thanksgiving have become synonymous, poultry farmers fatten turkeys
especially for this holiday. The third attribute of the holiday is parades (mostly
costumed in 17th century and Indian costumes) and fun.
Groundhog Day.
Groundhog Day.
According to popular US tradition
it is believed that on February 2, the groundhog crawls out of the hole after hibernation to
check if spring has come. If the groundhog sees his shadow (that is, if the day
sunny), then there will be bad weather for about 6 more weeks. If he doesn’t see
shade (cloudy weather), which means that spring is just around the corner. It is also important whether
groundhog immediately back to the house or sit outside for a while. If immediately
returns to the house – then a cold snap is approaching. And if he decides to stay on
air – to be soon spring. The “official” groundhog lives in
town of Punksutawney, Pennsylvania (Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania), and his name is
Phil – Punxsutawney Phil. In the early morning of February 2, Turkey comes to Turkey Hill
a group of gentlemen dressed in top hats and tuxedos. All of them are members of the Groundhog Club
from Punksutoni. One of them is endowed with special powers: he is trusted
to perform the main ritual – to pull Phil the Groundhog out of his house and listen to how
Phil whispers his weather forecast for the next 6 weeks into his ear. Then this
the forecast is announced to a lot of people who come to Punksutoni specially,
to witness this exciting event. Groundhog Day officially for the first time
celebrated on February 2, 1886. Even then, Groundhog was solemnly given the name “Phil from
Punksutoni – Clairvoyant of Clairvoyants, Sage of Sages, Foreteller of
Foretellers, and the Eminent Weather Seer.” And Phil’s homeland, the city itself
Punxutoni has been called the “Weather Capital of the World”. The first prediction came true – it was not
shadows, early spring has come! But in general, statistics, alas, do not confirm
Phil’s predictions. According to records dating back over 100 years, groundhog forecast
came true only … at 39%. After the famous film “The Day of
Groundhog, starring Bill Murray and Andie MacDowell,
Punxutoni’s popularity skyrocketed. For example, in 1997 look
35 thousand people came to Phil – this is 5 times more than the population of all
district cities.

Pancake.
One Tuesday in February or
March, which usually coincides with Fat Tuesday, marks one of
notable holidays – International Pancake Day (International Pancake
day). The holiday is held in Kansas (USA). The first pancake festival took place in
1950 year. But in the English town of Albee, it has been held for 500 years.
from the fact that once during Great Lent one of the townswomen secretly fried
pancakes in your kitchen. Suddenly a bell sounded. poor hostess
she was so frightened that, forgetting everything in the world, she rushed to the church … right from
frying pan in hand and pancakes sizzling on it. This was in 1445.
Pancake Run Since then, the townspeople have organized an annual pancake race –
women, without fail in dresses and aprons, must run a certain
distance, tossing a pancake on a frying pan. A similar tradition exists in
Westminster School in London – a pancake baked with horsehair so that it does not
fell apart, they toss it in the pan, and then the students try to grab
a bigger piece. So in Albee and Liberal, women run the streets every year with
frying pans in their hands, turning pancakes on the run. And the award to the winner
serves as a ringer’s kiss, honor and respect. Well, what about the pancakes that didn’t fall off
frying pans during the races, then eaten together by the spectators. For reference: on
In the West, thick pancakes are called pancakes, which is usually translated into Russian
like fritters. And thin pancakes – crepes.

Oscar Film Awards.
US National Major Film Awards
and one of the most prestigious film awards in the world – Oscar (Oscar) is the most
the oldest award in the world in the field of media, but still remains one of the most
significant awards in world cinema. It is awarded annually by the American
Academy of Cinematography (Film Academy) at a ceremony that
traditionally takes place in late February – early March at the Kodak Theater in
Los Angeles (USA). Another feature of this award is that, unlike
most film festivals, the Oscars are awarded according to the results of the general
voting members of the Film Academy, and not at the choice of the jury. Award nominees
are nominated by colleagues in the film industry, but the winners of the award are determined
by secret ballot of members of the Film Academy, which, as of 2007, were
about 6,000 people, divided into 16 guilds. And each guild (by the way, most
the most numerous of them is acting) votes in their category (actors
choose the best actress and actor, screenwriters – the best screenwriter, etc.). But
for some nominations, special voting groups are created outside
Film academies, and all together they vote in only one category – “the best
painting”. The names of the winners are kept secret until the ceremony.
the Oscars.
First award ceremony
The film awards of this Film Academy took place on May 16, 1929 in Los Angeles in
the Roosevelt Hotel. Since then, the rules of delivery, voting, and even the list
nominations are constantly changing. Today’s awards ceremony is broadcast on
dozens of countries around the world live, and until 1953 it was broadcast on the radio.
Perhaps the only thing that has remained unchanged from the first days of existence
“Oscar” – a gilded figurine, which is the main prize for
winners. It has been produced since 1929 years old and represents a knight with
sword on a film reel. The five holes on the base of the coil are five
departments of the Film Academy: producers, screenwriters, directors, actors and technicians.
The height of the figurine is 34 cm, weight is 3.85 kg, it is made of gold-plated
British alloy, it is located on a pedestal of black marble. Idea
figurines belong to MGM CEO Cedric Gibbons,
its incarnation – to the sculptor George Stanley. But the author of the name itself – “Oscar”
– is not known for certain.

Mother’s Day.
Mother’s Day.
The origins of Mother’s Day,
perhaps one should look for the holidays of spring, which the inhabitants of ancient Greece
dedicated to Rhea, the mother of the gods. Beginning in 1600, there was a tradition in England
celebration of Mother’s Sunday. On this day, which fell on
fourth Sunday of Lent, mothers were honored. The history of this
holiday has kept some interesting facts. For example, at that time many
the English poor worked as servants for the rich. Because they often work
away from family, they had to live in the homes of their employers. To Mother
Sunday they were given a day of rest, so that they went home
and spent the day with their mothers. The symbol of the holiday was a special, maternal
cake, which was presented to the mother as a sign of respect. After distribution
Christianity in Europe began to celebrate holidays in honor of the Mother Church – a symbol
spiritual power that gives life and protection from danger. Over time the day
mothers of the Church and Mother Sunday began to be celebrated as one holiday: people
honored their mothers as earnestly as the church. United States Day
mother was first publicly supported in 1872 by Julia Ward Howe, author
Republican anthem. Calling to dedicate this day to the world, every year she
organized mass rallies in honor of Mother’s Day in Boston. At 1907 Anna
Jarvis, from Philadelphia, launched a Mother’s Day campaign as
national holiday. Jarvis convinced the church in Grafton, Western
Virginia, to celebrate Mother’s Day on the second anniversary of her mother’s death –
second Sunday in May. The following year, Mother’s Day was also celebrated on
Philadelphia. In an effort to achieve the establishment of Mother’s Day as a national
holiday, Anna Jarvis and her supporters began to write letters to ministers, businessmen
and politicians. Their efforts were crowned with success, as at 1914 President Woodrow
Wilson officially declared the establishment of Mother’s Day a national holiday,
which is celebrated annually on the second Sunday in May. On this mothers day
honored also in Germany, Finland, Italy, Greece, Turkey, Australia and
Belgium. In other countries of the world, Mother’s Day is celebrated on different days of the year. By
popularity among Americans Mother’s Day is in fifth place after
Valentine, Fathers Day, Easter and Christmas. On this day, to all sons,
regardless of their relationship with their parents, you should visit your mother, present
her a symbolic gift, to be with her for a while.
Father ’ S Day .
Father’s Day.
Father’s Day in the USA
celebrated on the third Sunday of June. The idea of creating a holiday for children,
who want to show their gratitude to their fathers came from Spokane,
Washington (Spokane, Washington). A woman named Sonora Smart, married
Dodd (Sonora Smart Dodd) at 1909 in the church during the service dedicated to the Day
mother, thought that after the death of her mother and five more children
raised by his father, William Jackson Smart. Sonora wanted her father to know what
he is a special person for her, as she loves and appreciates him. After all, her father donated
everyone to fulfill all his parental duties and was in the eyes of his
daughter the most courageous, unselfish and loving person. Sonora turned
to the local authorities with a proposal to establish a new holiday, she was supported and
were going to have a celebration on June 5 – the birthday of William Smart, but
there was not enough time to prepare them, and the holiday was postponed to 19June.
Soon the holiday became popular in other cities of the state. In 1924 in
Sonora Dodd’s initiative was supported by US President Calvin Coolidge. He
believed that this holiday would help strengthen relations between
fathers and their children and at the same time remind fathers of their parental
responsibilities. In 1956, a Congressional resolution was passed calling for
establishments of such a holiday. In 1966, President Lyndon Johnson signed
proclamation declaring the third Sunday of June Father’s Day. But the male composition
The US Congress did not dare to officially establish a holiday, as congressmen
feared that they might be caught biased. Only at 1972 President
Nixon legalized Father’s Day. So Father’s Day came about as an expression
love and gratitude that the daughter dedicated to her father. Roses are flowers of the day
father: red ones are worn if the father is alive, and white ones if the father is dead. Followed by USA Day
Father on the third Sunday of June began to be celebrated by Great Britain, the Netherlands,
France, China, Japan and other countries.
