American Notes, Part 1. Fort Collins and environs.

I continue my notes and observations in Colorado. We’re still at Fort Collins, but we’ll be heading south in a day. In the meantime – more about the city in which we stopped, and about its surroundings.

It is curious, crossing with the Americans, to discover in oneself one’s own dissimilarity to them. People of a different culture act as a kind of mirror in which you look – and notice what you don’t see under normal conditions. For example, I discovered how many internal prohibitions on social behavior we have, and which Americans do not have – and vice versa, in which we are freer (although it is doubtful that this is for the better). Here, take a look – in the photo you see a kindergarten and an elementary school. The building is completely unremarkable, utilitarian to the point of primitivism in its external form. Each door leads from the premises of a particular group to the courtyard (the doors are signed).

1. Kindergarten.

Adjacent to the kindergarten, as in Russia, is a playground. The ground on it is generously sprinkled with sawdust, which is why the floor has become slightly springy – and much softer than even the rubber coating familiar to our country (not to mention asphalt). The question remains how safe these sawdust are (may get into the eyes), although I don’t think it’s more dangerous than sand, which our sites are also rich in.

2. Playground.

So, about internal restrictions. My daughters, Marina and Anyutka, happily ran to this playground. About five minutes later, when we found out from the inscription on the door that this was a kindergarten / elementary school, I went up to Marina and said: “Marina, you know, this is a kindergarten.” Marina at the same moment shrank, tensed and asked me: “What, is it possible here ?!” The usual Russian “it is impossible, if not allowed!”. It showed up at other times as well. For example, when our family company, walking in the city park, confidently walked along a concrete path, and with surprise followed the gaze of a runner who was jogging at ease on the grass growing along this path. How to run off the track? “Do not walk on lawns!” – deeply crawled into the subcortex, and even despite the fact that we constantly saw people who calmly walked along these lawns, this rule kept popping up in our minds.

I also stumbled over babies. On a plane flying from San Francisco to Denver, a family of clearly Indian origin sat in chairs, and the father held a baby in his arms, about 10-15 days old. Well, I decided that they might be going home from the hospital (although Denver is a big city, and definitely not more expensive than San Francisco), so they took such a crumb with them. But a couple of days later, in the outdoor children’s pool in Fort Collins Park, I see a young mother sitting on the lawn, holding a baby in her arms, again, 10-15 days old. And this did not bother my mother at all, as well as others. Then I remembered the Russian tradition of hiding their babies from prying eyes for up to a month, and even pulling out their public places at that age is generally a crime :). And it is clear that the clothes on this baby were exactly as much as the weather required (about 25 degrees) – no hats, scarves and triple blouses. Yes, a light undershirt. In general, with children’s health here they don’t rush like we do.

After living in the big house for a few days, I thought that it would be very lonely for me to live here alone. For families, yes. But it is difficult for one person to settle in all these numerous premises, to master, to make his own. And then they, with the exception of three or four rooms, begin to clutter up, gather dust, turning into warehouses. And now in the United States they are massively building houses that are twice as large as those built in the 1960s (we live in this one). Here, for example, is one of these new districts:

3.

The more the better? Sometimes this is the case if part of the house is adapted for its own business (workshop, some groups, etc.). But even with this, there are two things that make such a development not very attractive (for me), apart from the price. Houses are built very close to each other, window-to-window, this is the first moment. And the second – such houses, as a rule, do not have a personal plot where you can set up your garden. The entire land is occupied by a house. So the old houses are much closer to me – they are not so big, but you can make the front entrance the way you like it, and you can arrange a garden for yourself in the back.

4. Front entrance to our house (compare with the photo above).

Curiously, big houses are not necessarily bought by rich people. Here is a car stably parked at one of the “rich houses”. Although the devil knows – maybe a worker is coming?

5.

6. In addition to private houses, condominiums (houses for several families) are often found in Fort Collins. Pretty pretty (although they don’t have their own plots either).

7. The entrance to one of these houses.

Squirrels are the most frequent guests in the garden of our house. They are in town instead of cats, dogs and chipmunks combined. Since I’m not used to them yet, as locals, here are some photos of these immediate darlings (which, however, quickly eat up all the master’s apples – only raccoons are worse than them).

8.
9.

10.

11. Squirrels are quite fat. And sometimes they get tired 🙂

Returning to the topic of prohibitions and permissions. Reading some reviews about the United States, I sometimes caught myself feeling that, if you believe them, all Americans follow the rules adopted in their country, that if anyone breaks something, it’s residents of various kinds of ghettos, but by no means respectable WASPs – whites middle class European Americans. Maybe it’s true, but we in good areas of Fort Collins (there are no ethnic or racial ghettos in the city) saw cars parked next to “no parking at any time”, and citizens not cleaning up the waste of their dogs, and passing red light of young people, and traces of student drinking, and, to put it mildly, not very clean toilets in a park near the city. Another thing is that these facts are few, and they are not the rule, but just the exception. Like, for example, these beer cans on the table and under the table.

12.

13. And here is the same toilet – it looks very decent and clean, but inside … Russian type of toilet. There was an unpleasant surprise – the picture is very unusual here. But as it is.

By the way, this building is located in the Lori Park adjacent to Fort Collins and Horse Tooth Reservoir (named after the rocks, reminiscent of what is understood). The place is very beautiful, and at the same time only 10-15 minutes drive from the city by car. Here, on the land that once belonged to the Comanches and Arapaho, the Powder River flows (translated from French – Gunpowder). This name is due to the fact that the French trappers (hunters and fur purveyors) in these places equipped the stocks of gunpowder hidden from the Indians (so as not to carry too much with them). I’ll just leave a few photos here.

14. Rocks and Powder River.

20.

21. Reservoir (this and the next photo)

22.

Everywhere there are paths, paths, viewing platforms, and in some places a grill is installed – bring meat with you, look at the lake / reservoir, and fry. You can’t get off the tracks. Anyutka joyfully walked along the path, plucked blades of grass and leaves for herself (according to the Russian custom), but she was reprimanded – this is not accepted here. Fishing is allowed, but only with a specially purchased license. It is given to pensioners for free, but you need to know where exactly – before they were given out in almost all specialized stores, now they are not. Children and teenagers in the city can fish without a license.

23.

24.

That’s all for now. We leave in a day, through several national parks to the Grand Canyon in Arizona. There will be something to share and something to think about.

Books that shaped my inner world

Pavel Sanaev “Bury Me Behind the Plinth” is an autobiographical story about an eight-year-old boy Sasha Savelyev, who lives with his grandparents because his grandmother does not trust the upbringing of the boy to his mother, her daughter. She hates and condemns her “dissolute” daughter because she married a second time. Her cruel “love for her grandson”, more like hatred, grows out of the desire to have an obedient and unrequited doll that can be patronized, healed and punished. This “selfless” care helps her to feel her own importance and more acutely revel in her own “suffering” caused by deceitful, callous and ungrateful people (including the boy). The child, whom she constantly teaches to hate her mother, does not respond well to this processing of consciousness and tries to escape from the pressure of domestic tyranny. It is surprising how many unhappy people in the family, because of the grandmother, offended by an unsuccessful life. Everyone is to blame for her life: her husband, daughter, officials, doctors, and most importantly, an eight-year-old boy falls into this category. A boy deprived of childhood, sick, thinking that he will not live long, dreams of being buried behind a baseboard to see how his mother walks.

My view of the world

I really like life in its full manifestation. Breathe deeply, fill life with colors. I love my job, it is impossible to fulfill my duties without love. I don’t understand people who come to work only to serve out the allotted time, do not strive for self-realization, do not see prospects. I think that in our time you can find a business that you would like, and could bring satisfaction from what you have done, from the day you have lived. I respect people who are honest and open, who are not afraid to express their opinions, who are honest with others, and who cannot stand lies and sycophancy.

My mind cannot accept the thought of how unhappy children can be in such a great country, why orphanages are overcrowded, why there is domestic violence against children. Can’t “respectable” adults really understand how ugly their little souls are. I love children, without them a full life is impossible. I love animals, they, like children, decorate and delight our existence on this planet. I love to be in nature, I am charged with energy and I feel like a part of it.
