New Jersey hopes for Raff and youth

Looking forward to the 2020-21 season, NHL.com/ru analyzes the situation in every club in the league in the traditional series “31 for 31”. In this issue, we analyze the past season and the prospects for the New Jersey Devils.

Before the start of the 2019-20 season, New Jersey was named as the club that could surprise. Then PK Subban, Nikita Gusev and Wayne Simmonds came to the club, and Jack Hughes was selected as the first pick in the draft. But already at the start of the championship, the “Devils” ceased to meet the forecasts and suffered defeat one after another. As a result, after a major loss to Buffalo (1: 7), the Devils fired coach John Hines on December 3, replacing him with assistant Alain Nasreddin, and on January 12 parted ways with general manager Ray Shero, appointing Tom Fitzgerald to this post.

When it became clear that New Jersey would not be able to catch the playoffs, the club began to rebuild. Long before the December 16 deadline, the Devils traded their then-prime star forward Taylor Hall to the Arizona. Then the Devils made five more exchanges. The team left the defenders Andy Green and Sami Vatanen, forwards Blake Coleman and Simmonds, as well as goalkeeper Louis Domingue. After the appointment of Nasreddin, “New Jersey” managed to level the game a bit, but in the overall standings, “Devils” with 28 victories were able to get ahead of only “Ottawa” (25) and “Detroit” (17).

According to The Athletic poll, more than half of the fans (51.4%) called the work done by Nasreddin “good” or “acceptable”. However, the leadership of the Devils decided to transfer the specialist back to the role of an assistant and invite the most experienced Lindy Ruff, who led various NHL teams for 19 seasons (15 with Buffalo and four more with Dallas), to the club as head coach. He ranks sixth among league coaches in wins (736) and seventh in games played (149).3).

New Jersey hopes that Ruff will be able to become a “father-mentor” for the young Devils players, who will be in abundance in their squad next season. And the specialist himself understands what tasks he has to solve in the first place. The most important thing for the Devils in the coming season is not the result here and now, but the development and progress of all talents.

“My philosophy [of working with young players] is to communicate all the time,” Raff said after being appointed. I need to tell them how they should play, what is pressure, puck control… You need to know what they think about during training, games, to help them feel comfortable in the team. They need to understand what I want from them.Sometimes young guys It’s enough just to say what they need to do. But they almost always want to know why they need to play the way they do. And that question needs to be answered. More often than not, the answer is that it’s necessary for the team to succeed.”

Video: Devils’ top 10 moments so far

“Sometimes young guys are in a rush to get to the top as soon as possible,” Raff added. “How to prepare for training. He must tell the player how to rest, how to eat right, in order to fully reveal his talent. To become a professional, you need to know and be able to know a lot. This should be understood by young guys who are just starting their career in the NHL. It’s not enough just get stronger physically to fight guys who are twice your size and stronger than you. They have to feel comfortable.”

If Jack Hughes read this interview with Ruff, he probably would have thought that it was specifically about him. The debut season for the first number of the 2019 draft frankly did not work out. In 61 matches, he scored 21 (7 + 14) points with the worst utility indicator in the team (minus-26). The stats don’t change the fact that Hughes is an incredibly talented and technical player, but he has a lot of work to do to keep up with the NHL this offseason.

The same goes for the team’s main center, Niko Hishir, who, at 21, is New Jersey’s second-highest-paid player behind defenseman PK Subban ($7.25 million per season vs.million from Subban). Last season, the 2017 No. 1 draft pick scored 36 (14 assists, 22) points in 58 games, became the team’s third scorer, and won more than half of the face-offs (51.7%) for the first time in three seasons in the NHL. But the Devils expect more from him. Although the general manager constantly calms the press and shields his young stars from undue pressure. In the camp of the “Devils” no one is in a hurry.

“I’m not trying to solve all the problems in one day,” Fitzgerald said in early October. “The team will be transformed when Jack and Niko reach their full potential. These hockey players are capable of leading everyone. To be honest, we will follow through. “We don’t intend to rush things. We will do everything right, we will move forward step by step, looking for players who will help our young stars grow. They are still very young, but they are ready to progress.”

“(Hishir) has played three seasons in the NHL and is ready to take the next step,” added the Devils general manager. in order for our youth to develop, we will not push the guys just because we need it.”

Video: NYR-NDD: Hishir scored already at the 37th second

Fitzgerald is incredibly tactful and calm in his reasoning. And this should not be surprising. “New Jersey” is now in rebuilding mode and is trying to combine experience and youth. In the offseason, the Devils parted ways with Corey Schneider and signed Corey Crawford for two years, who could be a good mentor to 23-year-old Mackenzie Blackwood. Potential top-six forward Andreas Junson, experienced Russian defender Dmitry Kulikov and former Columbus defenseman Ryan Murray also joined the club.

The Devils have 35-year-old Travis Zajak, 29-year-old Kyle Palmieri and 28-year-old Nikita Gusev on offense. It is this trinity that is the club’s oldest strikers at the moment. None of the other forwards have turned 26 yet. At the same time, Yunson, Miles Wood, Esperi Bratt and Pavel Zaha have many seasons in the NHL behind them. Also, Michael Macleod, Jesper Bukvist and Janne Kuokkanen have already made their debut in the best league in the world, who are expected to start the upcoming championship at the base.

Also on the way to the main team are Nolan Foote, Belarusian Egor Sharangovich and Russian Mikhail Maltsev. All three will have a chance to break into the NHL, showing a classy level of readiness in training camp. In addition, in the 2020 draft, New Jersey took two more promising forwards in the first round: Alexander Holtz (No. 7) and Dawson Mercer (No. 18). Even more hopeful in the NCAA is Tice Thompson, 21, who scored 44 (19) in 34 games for Providence College last season.+25) points.

Defensively, the Devils will look much more experienced here. Subban is already 31 years old, Kulikov is 30, Murray is 27, Connor Carrick and Damon Severson are 26 each, Will Butcher is 25.
