History

The territory of present-day Cedar Rapids is located in the territory belonging to the Fox and Sack tribes.

The first permanent settler Ozgood Passet arrived in 1838. When Cedar Rapids formed in 1838, William Stone named the city Columbus. In 1841, the town was renamed Cedar Rapids by Brown, after the rapids on the Cedar River. The river was named after the large red cedars that grow along the banks.
