Boris Ryzhy – biography of the poet, personal life, photos, portraits, poems, books
Boris Ryzhy is considered the voice of the last Soviet generation. As a teenager, he began to write poetry and became a boxing champion. Ryzhy was highly appreciated by Yevgeny Rein and Yevgeny Yevtushenko, in different years he received the Antibooker and Northern Palmyra awards. Based on his work, songs were recorded, performances were staged, and the Dutch director Alyona van der Horst made a documentary about him.

Boris Ryzhy was born on September 8, 1974 in Chelyabinsk, in the family of epidemiologist Margarita Ryzhey and geophysicist Boris Ryzhy. The future poet had two older sisters – Elena and Olga.
Boris Ryzhiy did not go to kindergarten: when his parents were at work, his maternal grandmother Evdokia Pashkova sat with him. From an early age, his father and sister Olga read to him the works of Pushkin, Lermontov, Bryusov, Blok, Nikolai Nekrasov.
…Because everyone loved me,
the trees were silent until morning.
“They gave a bear to a girl” —
my sister read to me before going to bed…
As a child, Ryzhy accidentally injured his face with fragments of a glass jar, the scar remained for life.
In 1980, the whole family, except for Elena Ryzhey, moved to Sverdlovsk (now Yekaterinburg). They settled in a four-room apartment on the southwestern outskirts of the city, in the Chkalovsky district, which was popularly called Vtorchermet. Soon, the poet’s father was given the position of chief geophysicist in the production and geological association Uralgeology, and Boris Ryzhiy himself went to first grade.
I lived on Vtorchermet, studied at a regular school. The school was absolutely terrible, they cut each other there, won some crazy sums at cards, and so on. <...> I studied very poorly, and my sister wrote essays on literature for me, that’s what I remember exactly.
In his school years, the future poet was fond of modeling and sculpting from plasticine, at the same time he began to put words into rhymes for the first time. At the age of 12, together with his parents, he visited his mother’s homeland – in the village of Skripovo, Oryol region. Margarita Ryzhaya told her son about her relatives and about life in wartime – in childhood she was captured by the Germans.
Boris Ryzhiy warmly treated his sister Olga, thanks to her he learned to swim, together they read and discussed Russian literature. When she was away, Ryzhiy regularly wrote letters to her.
I was 13–14 years old, we were drinking tea with my sister Olya, I was talking about Mayakovsky and was delighted with the fragment (from “Rain was weeping the sidewalks…” to “…tears from the eyes, yes, from the open eyes of the drainpipes…”) his poems [“A cloud in trousers”]. And Olya read to me “From Nowhere with Love …” and said that it was Brodsky. I was, of course, shocked.
Boris Ryzhiy went in for sports and martial arts in high school. In 1988, he won the Sverdlovsk boxing championship in his age category. In parallel with these hobbies, he wrote poetry, detective novels and miniatures, and was interested in music. In the 10th grade, the future poet met Irina Knyazeva. Later in an interview, he called her his first love.

In 1991, the Redheads moved from the outskirts of Yekaterinburg to Moskovskaya Gorka – in the historical center of the city. Boris Ryzhiy entered the Ural State Mining and Geological Academy. On December 27 of the same year, he married Irina Knyazeva. At first they lived with Ryzhy’s parents, and a few years later they moved to a separate apartment.
During his university years, Boris Ryzhiy met the poets Alexei Kuzin and Yuri Lobantsev. After the first meeting, Kuzin wrote in his diary that Ryzhy had “a clearly expressed dramatic worldview, a figurative vision of the world, fluency in poetic form (with the exception of some carelessness in rhyming). But he is still very young and uncontrollable” . Lobantsev, who led the literary association “Mountain Spring”, supported the novice writer and advised him to participate in poetry competitions.
At the age of 18, Ryzhiy took second place at the Moscow Student Poetry Festival. It began to be published, more and more often over time. Poems by Boris Ryzhy were published in Rossiyskaya Gazeta, Yekaterinburgskaya Gazeta, and in the Ural Pathfinder and Ural magazines.
The young family had to earn extra money: Boris Ryzhiy got a job as a watchman and watchman, his wife took projects home and digitized computer maps. In mid-January 1993, Irina Knyazeva gave birth to a son, Artem.
Winter has come.
And snowflakes fall like gears,
from a disassembled cloud.
O great, mighty one,
help me to feed my wife and child.
So that they don’t forget their father…
Since the mid-1990s, Boris Ryzhiy traveled to Moscow and St. Petersburg, where he attended literary festivals and meetings. He made new acquaintances – with the poets Alexei Kuzin, Alexei Purin, Alexander Kushner, Oleg Dozmorov and the Dutch translator Hans Boland. Toward the end of the decade, Ryzhiy first met the poets Yevgeny Rein and Yevgeny Yevtushenko. He dedicated the poem “Rein Yevgeny Borisych leaves into the night” to Rein, and he later spoke of Boris Ryzhy as “the last poet of the 20th century” and “the most talented poet of his generation” .
After university, Boris Ryzhiy entered graduate school, then got a job as a junior researcher at the Institute of Geophysics. According to him, he did this in order not to go into the army and not leave his wife and son. Ryzhiy published 18 scientific papers on the structure of the earth’s crust and seismic activity in the Urals and Russia.

Boris Ryzhy during the International Congress of Poets. St. Petersburg, 1999. Illustration from Ilya Falikov’s book “Boris Ryzhiy. Divy Stone. Moscow: Young Guard publishing house, 2015
In 1999, Boris Ryzhiy got a job at the Ural magazine. He led the columns “Count Khvostov” and “Anthology of masterpieces of the poetry of the Urals.” He did not work there for long: after a conflict with editor-in-chief Nikolai Kolyada, he was fired. Then Ryzhiy became an employee of the Book Club newspaper. In his column “Actual Poetry with Boris Ryzhy”, he once wrote: “… if poetry is archaic, then life, dear, of this and that, is also archaic” .
In the spring of 1999, a selection of Ryzhy’s poems “From Sverdlovsk with Love” was published in the Znamya magazine. For it, on January 21, 2000, the poet was awarded the Antibooker Prize in the Stranger nomination and two thousand dollars.
In the same year, the first collection of poems by Boris Ryzhy “And all that …” was published in St. Petersburg. In June, he went to Rotterdam for the World Poetry Festival. According to Alexei Kuzin, there Ryzhiy most of all communicated with Evgeny Rein and Alexei Alekhin, and life in Holland seemed boring to him: “… they have everything, everything is well-groomed” . At the end of summer, the poet’s poems were published in the Dutch magazine Passionata. In autumn, he became a member of the Yekaterinburg branch of the Union of Russian Writers.
I’ll smoke, but on my haunches, like a kind of inveterate urka,
I’m still alive, I don’t need your chatter.
And when, after death, I become a wonderful poet,
for an epigraph, here are the lines for an article about me. ..
Ilya Falikov in his book “Boris Ryzhiy. Divy Kamen” said that in March-April 2001 the poet had depression: “The doctor gave him new antidepressants, he took pills almost until May…” In the early morning of May 7, Boris Ryzhy passed away. He left a note: “I loved everyone. Without fools” .
By the age of 26, Ryzhiy had written more than a thousand poems. Critics called him “the last Soviet poet” , and according to Yevgeny Rein, the death of Boris Ryzhy is “ a tragedy no less than the suicide of Mayakovsky, Yesenin and Tsvetaeva” . The poet was posthumously awarded the Northern Palmyra Prize. His book “And All That…” won as the best work in the genre of poetry.

Boris Ryzhiy. A still from Alena van der Horst’s documentary “Boris Ryzhiy” (2008)
1. According to Yevgeny Yevtushenko, “At the age of twenty-one, Boris Ryzhiy predicted his death. And although he was talking about another person, it sounded too personal. Unfortunately, he did not meet Boris Pasternak on his way, who could advise him, as I did in 1960, in no case to predict his tragic death in verse, because the power of the word is such that it irreversibly pushes the poets to the bullet or into loop…”
2. Dutch director Alyona van der Horst made a documentary film “Boris Ryzhiy”, where she tried to understand the causes of the poet’s death. The film received a prize at the 21st International Documentary Film Festival in Amsterdam in 2008 and a prize for the best documentary at the Edinburgh Film Festival in 2009.
3. The Belarusian rock band Silent at Home used Boris Ryzhy’s poem “The Enamelled Vessel” in their album “Etazhi”. The Dutch group De Kift, along with poems by Sergei Yesenin, Anna Akhmatova and Alexander Pushkin, recorded songs based on Ryzhy’s poems “So I Understand” and “Sea”, they were included in the album “7”.
4. In Chelyabinsk, on September 8, 2014, a bronze plaque with the inscription “Poet Boris Ryzhiy was born in this house on September 8, 1974” was placed on a building at 149 Svoboda Street. It was made by artist Sergei Cherkashin and sculptors Vladislav Bulychev and Dmitry Kostylev.
5. Based on the work of the poet, performances were staged in the Moscow theater “P. Fomenko’s Workshop”, in the theater of performing arts “MasterskayaYu” and the Center for Contemporary Drama.
6. On the tombstone of Boris Ryzhy, the last lines of his poem “From the Photo Album” were embossed:
… My soul, by fire and smoke,
by the sky-blue path,
beloved, fly to your beloved

Undergraduates (newcomers to the Fomenko Workshop, acquaintances from the Forest of Arden) are performing a play based on poems by the Ural poet Boris Ryzhy. Director Yuri Butorin called the genre “a journey from Sverdlovsk to Yekaterinburg and back”: you sit among others on a platform, it is no larger than a park carousel, and two pairs of invisible hands rotate it. The conductor with insolent painted eyes calls the stops. Float past: a concrete fence, a hostel, a roof. Hall of Fame, Cop UAZ. Women of difficult fate and women with an oar. Cops, Kents, bandit Lysov in black “droplets” and a long leather coat. An angel in banana jeans and a girl’s face. “How well we lived poorly, smoking in the wind,” reads Red, alone in half a dozen guises (another actor simply draws a scar from his eye across his cheek with his finger). Among them there is still a certain Tofik – ritual services, and he is an indispensable figure here. Because “Redhead” is a portrait of the eighties and nineties, a suicidal time that chose a boy from Vtorchermet, spellbound by death, as a poet. He himself has just begun to live, but, like a condemned man, he looks back at other people’s funerals: “The detachment of the driver, / The digger’s fuss. / Do you want, do you want, / Both me and me.” He describes a reclined neighbor, a kind drinking district policeman, various riffraff and his beloved girl, sparingly mourns the bandit Lysov (“I knew him from the gates / Before the deputy candidate”), says goodbye to the valiant “what happened, that can’t be returned” – and then tightens the noose on your own neck. Rather, in reality, Ryzhiy hanged himself on the balcony of his own house in 2001, before he was 27. And in the play, he floats over the heads of the audience with a happy smile. In order not to burst into tears at this brutally sentimental revue, one has to think from time to time about what infuriates him. And here you don’t have to look for a long time: this is the music of Sergei Nikitin. Brutal rhymes of the “industrial zone of the poet” – and optimistic overflows in the spirit of “it’s good to be young”, forgive me, but it was difficult to come up with an absurd combination.

2) there is obscene language in the performance. If this didn’t scare you away, then welcome to the Yekaterinburg-Sverdlovsk-Yekaterinburg train. In the foyer, a woman with a mouthpiece will announce boarding, invite you to take your seats according to the purchased tickets. In the “car” you will be met by a conductor with glassy eyes and a nasty voice)), and will accompany you throughout the trip, the passengers will involuntarily giggle, the image is so accurate (for which many thanks to Naja Mer, every time I waited with interest what else she “throws out”)))).
The performance is watched in one breath. To be honest, I don’t like all the poems, not all the songs. But all the same, don’t relax for a minute, don’t lose the thread… You are involved in this action (passengers in the front rows are even practically – they are constantly offered to either hold something or buy something).
The performance ends with the performance of Ryzhy’s most famous song “I was riding on the roof of a steam locomotive to the city of Ufaley and hugging my friends with both hands …” (you must have heard it at least once, even if you are not familiar with Ryzhy’s work). And you leave the hall with a feeling of “Wow!!!”.

The performance is incredibly touching and beautiful in small things! I am sure that from the first time you will not notice all the little things (so significant), and each time you can discover this performance in a new way. I am convinced that it is just necessary to go to this performance prepared – at least read the biography of Boris Ryzhy in order to at least get a little closer to the conditions that broke … Thank you very much to the actors for the piercing performance, we both cried and laughed! We will definitely go again!

By far the best I’ve been to in the last couple of years.
The atmosphere of the 90s is so sincerely and so vividly conveyed…
The actors are cool, and this idea with the rotating audience..

“How well we lived well”
“Red” is a theatrical journey through space and time. The turn of the 80s – 90s. “Those fabulous years” in which “we lived so badly.”
Having broken the usual “hall-stage” structure, the creators of the performance placed a small amphitheater for spectators on a rotating turntable. “Look out, the train is leaving!” – and the audience begins the journey from “stop” to “stop”, from one scene to another. Dormitory, Vtorchermet, Mayakovsky Park of Culture and Recreation, Roof… At each of the stations of the “musical journey” you can find signs of the real Yekaterinburg/Sverdlovsk. Recognizable everyday details in combination with phantasmagoric paintings create a special atmosphere of the “theatrical route”. The creators of the performance tried to carefully translate the poetic intonations of Boris Ryzhy into the theatrical language – sometimes ironic, sometimes piercingly lyrical, sometimes carelessly hooligan, sometimes darkly tragic.
ATTENTION! During the performance, performing the creative tasks set by the director and the author’s remarks, the actors smoke on stage, and a stroboscope is also used to create various stage effects. Please consider this information when planning your visit to this performance.
- “Fomenki” staged a performance not about the terrible city of Sverdlovsk-Ekaterinburg, not about nostalgia for Soviet times (go to hell), not about a misunderstood poet and an ordinary crowd. And everything is about the same – about what, in fact, the “fomenki” put in a variety of variations. About the fact that there is no greater joy than to grow divine flowers of tenderness on the loam of a terrible, dirty, cruel life. About art that conquers life. About the sky in diamonds, seen from the bottom of a terrible well – it is clearly visible from there. After all, “the ugly is the beautiful that cannot be contained in the soul.”
- Olga Fuks, Vechernyaya Moskva
- In “Ryzhy” real human stories are turned into the history of the city and the world, mixed, molded into a single whole … The way all this is performed – sung, read, played, danced – separate song. This is probably only possible here, in the “Pyotr Fomenko Workshop”: with absolute professionalism, sometimes reaching virtuosity. And it’s so easy, as if they don’t work at all, but simply exist in the familiar element.
- Irina Alpatova, “Culture”
- These neo-realistic and at the same time desperately romantic poems, sometimes not at all like poetry, thicken the air more and more, condense the environment, and now we see what kind of rubbish grows out of them – the dirt of dorm rooms, the twilight of factory mornings, yesterday’s schoolchildren who became bandits and were buried by their own buddies, endless industrial zones and queues for vodka. Documentary film, barely silvered by the hoarfrost of poetry, or poetry stripped down to bare neorealism.

Red color in clothes | LOOKCOLOR
The red color in clothes is a soft, neutral orange that fits medium contrast color types. Will this color suit you? And how to use it?
The term “redhead” usually refers to a living creature: red squirrel, red fox, red girl. Describing, in this way, we mean orange shades, but not like orange or carrot, but more lively, natural. Reds, oranges, browns and even pinks are woven into red tones. This is a huge palette of stunning shades. And which of the girls, at least once in their life, did not dream of dyeing their hair red? What romantic image with red hair does our fantasy create?
Red is a special color. There is even such an exclamation “What am I? Redhead or what? ”, That is, the one who stands out. So red-haired girls seem special: temperamental and intellectual, mysterious and practical. And it is not surprising that this color attracts us, because yellow, red and blue tones are intertwined in it, and this is the female and male subconscious, as well as the height of detachment and spirituality of blue, they also turn into brown – wisdom and perseverance, and orange – romance of adventure, chivalry and adventure. The presence of many opposite qualities creates its own center of balance, which cannot but attract and intrigue.
At all times and in all countries, red-haired people stood out. Sometimes it inspired admiration, like the Titian women with golden brown hair, and sometimes fear and hatred, like the medieval idea of witches with red hair and green eyes. The red color became fashionable, for example, under Elizabeth II (England) and the color non grata, when the red color was compared with the mark of the devil.
People with red hair were presented as impulsive, sensual and unbalanced individuals. Some were attracted to it, others were repulsed. Of course, the red-orange color became the root of this judgment, where red is perceived as aggression, radical views, impulsiveness, and orange as sexuality, selfishness and pride. But there is always a downside, red can be perceived as an active life position, a tendency to leadership, the ability to make decisions quickly, and orange – courage, steadfastness, openness to everything new. Were people with red hair like that? Most likely, they had their own qualities, intersecting with what was attributed to them, only fighting or corresponding to the prevailing opinion about them.Red color in clothes
Fashion could not get around such a charming shade. He has hidden magic: if red hair catches the eye, then a red dress does not hurt the eyes, but it does not make its owner a “gray mouse”. Even not bright shades of this color look juicy and attractive. It can be seen in casual, dramatic, business and office collections. And, against your expectation, clothes of this color are tried on models of a non-autumn color type.
Although the red color appears mainly in the autumn-winter collections of fashion designers, it can also be found in summer sundresses.
It is worth noting another advantage of this shade: due to its complexity, it looks expensive and elegantRed hair is in fashion
I still remember the days when everyone dyed their hair with henna (a natural dye of Iranian origin), but this can also be attributed to the shortage of other shades. The red color is very capricious: it can easily spoil your face, making it paler or yellower than it really is. But how you want to be bright!
With the development of the hair dye industry, the selection of a shade of red color has become much simpler, and it tenaciously entrenched itself in the tops of fashion trends.
Every year a new shade of red appears, opening a new fashion season.Red shades – choose yours
And now we come to the question of choosing a red shade for color types.
The red color has a very wide range of shades, so each representative will choose, maybe not to their taste, but definitely going to their appearance, a tone.
Desert, red-blond, camel, saffron, golden shades of red are suitable for “spring”.
“Fly” – copper, red-brown, red-chestnut shades. They don’t have to be very bright. They should have as little yellow as possible.
With “autumn” everything is clear – this is her element.
“Winter” is worth looking at bright shades, from red-orange to dark red.Red dresses
Consider the common red shades on the example of clothes. This is the option when you like the color, but you don’t want to dye your hair. In addition, for representatives of the “summer” color type, red is the main shade of orange that they can use in their wardrobe.
