About Katy Virtual School

History
The Katy ISD Virtual School is built upon the online courses the District has offered since 2010.  The program was expanded in 2014 to include a greater variety of courses. Each course is developed by Katy ISD  to adhere to the Katy ISD curriculum which includes the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS).

Developing Courses
Katy ISD teachers are chosen as experts in their field to work with the appropriate secondary curriculum coordinator and the eLearning team to develop a challenging online course that aligns with national standards for online learning.  Parents and students can be assured that the courses in the Katy ISD Virtual School offer the same curriculum and rigor found in our face-to-face classes.

Pacing and Calendar
KVS courses follow the same school year schedule for the fall and spring semester.  Students begin and end their courses just like their regular face-to-face courses.  During the summer, KVS operates on a June – August calendar with two distinct semesters.  Each course provides pacing that supports the student moving through the content and assessments during the summer semester.  Students are expected to work weekly on their course. Visit the KatyOnline calendar for information on course start and end dates.

Who are our teachers?
All KVS teachers are current Katy ISD teachers who hold Texas Educator certification for the course.   In addition, all KVS teachers have completed a Virtual Instructor Certification Program through Texas A&M or the Katy ISD Online Instructor Certification.  Teachers of AP courses and GT students also must be approved teachers for those specialties.

What is a learning management system?
A learning management system is an online solution that hosts each course providing methods for sharing resources, including rich media, engaging in interactive online sessions, modules for each Unit Plan, assessments, communication tools, and e-portfolios. In addition, most courses provide access to the online textbook associated with the course.  The District has chosen a product that meets the demanding criteria for our courses, but yet is intuitive for students and teachers.

How does a student learn to use the learning management system?
The best resource for learning how to use it is Canvas Student Guides.  Each Katy Virtual School course has an introductory module with helpful information on how to use Canvas.

How does a student get help using the learning management system?
While the teacher can provide the most direct assistance, students can also gain help in using the learning management system in two ways:

  • Canvas Student Guides
  • While logged in to the Katy Virtual School course in Canvas, the student can select HELP in the bottom left and “Report a Problem”.

As the number of new coronavirus cases and hospitalizations continues to increase in the Greater Houston area, Katy ISD administration announced it would offer online learning for students in kindergarten through sixth grade who are not yet eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine.

The KISD board of trustees unanimously approved funding the Katy Virtual Academy for the first nine weeks of the 2021-22 school year using federal Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief funding during an Aug. 10 special meeting. The district’s allocation for the second and third round of ESSER funding totals $97 million, according to Texas Education Agency documents.

The application period for KVA begins at 10 a.m. Aug. 11 and runs through midnight Aug. 17. Parents and guardians with questions about the virtual option or application process can email [email protected] or call 281-234-2060.

While the first day of in-person learning in KISD is Aug. 18, KVA will begin Aug. 30. Deputy Superintendent Leslie Haack said students participating in KVA will remain at home until the start of virtual learning, and these missed minutes will be recovered.

Students enrolled in KVA will not be able to transfer to in-person learning during the first nine weeks. As of right now, KVA will be available through Oct. 15.

“At that time, I would assume that we would re-evaluate should any new statistics or anything come,” trustee Rebecca Fox said.

Haack said KVA teachers will provide online instruction from a centralized location, and online classes will include students from a variety of home campuses.

While Haack said she was not exactly sure what staffing for KVA would look like, KVA teachers could be available campus staff, certified substitutes or retired teachers. Campus teachers should be prepared for in-person learning Aug. 18, and the district aims to prevent these teachers from switching to online instruction Aug. 30.

Because the Texas Legislature has not funded virtual learning, Superintendent Ken Gregorski said KISD will not receive average daily attendance funding for students participating in KVA. Although he did not provide an estimated cost for the program, he said the district would lose out on approximately $35-$40 per day per student enrolled in KVA.

“I am a bit hopeful that our state Legislature will do something with virtual funding, although that did not get done in the regular session,” Gregorski said. “Money for that virtual program would be very beneficial to our schools. We just need our Texas House and our Senate to take a look at that virtual bill and see if they will fund that for our districts so that we would have a funding mechanism.

Board President Greg Schulte said 100 Katy ISD parents and community members registered to speak during the more than two-hour public comment portion of the Aug. 10 meeting.

The board heard from speakers who were in favor of a virtual learning option, requiring masks and other COVID-19 protocols as well as those who were against these measures, saying they restricted personal freedoms. The latest guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends all individuals regardless of vaccination status wear masks in schools.

Additionally, the board of trustees approved funding for COVID-19 testing, COVID-19 paid leave and remote conferencing for students at home for an extended period for a temporary medical condition.

COVID-19 testing resumed at the Merrell Center on Aug. 9. Testing is free for employees and their insured dependents and costs $125 for non-insured dependents. The district is also working on confirming logistics for student testing, which is paid for by the state, Haack said.

The district also approved 10 days of paid COVID-19 leave for staff who test positive for the virus or whose school-aged children test positive for the virus. These 10 days are in addition to the employee’s personal leave bank.

Lastly, KISD will offer remote conferencing, also known as intermittent school to home learning, for extended absences related to a temporary medical condition, including a positive COVID-19 case or close contact.

Neighboring district Fort Bend ISD announced details of its online learning program for students in grades pre-K through six in a press release Aug. 9.

I am a student of the program “Landscape design and gardening and park construction”, I am a beginner in this business. Very satisfied with the training. All information is presented correctly, clearly and thoroughly. You can also learn to draw here (which I dreamed about), this is a huge plus for me. I am excited about learning. The system is very convenient for me, there is an electronic library, and you can watch various webinars. If someone has doubts to study or not, definitely study here!!!! Thank you for your work!

For a long time I dreamed of learning design, I wanted to try myself in it. When I finally made up my mind, I reviewed a bunch of distance learning options (because I can’t afford full-time), re-read a bunch of reviews and eventually settled on Penta School, because the price, training time and course content agreed optimally for me. From the very first session, I was blown away! I liked both the material and the presentation. I was afraid that something would not work out, but in the end it turned out not so scary 🙂 The teachers are friendly, always in touch. In the process of training, I experienced some life changes, and I practically did not have the originally planned time for training. But, fortunately, and for which I am immensely grateful, they went to meet me and extended my studies, and even more than once, thanks to which I was able to complete the course to the end! To be honest, it’s even sad that it’s over. I really liked the teaching staff and the training itself, I will miss it! Perhaps a little later, when there is more time, I will sign up for another more narrowly focused course. In general, I liked everything about the course “Interior Design. Professional Course” learned a lot of new things, created a project for my summer house 🙂 Now we will implement it 🙂 Thank you! P.S. I will need interns for work, I will be glad to see you 🙂

This is my first experience of distance learning, but I am glad that I studied with you. Just delighted with the webinars, where you could ask any question, discuss a topic of interest and get advice from professionals in their field.
I wish you success and prosperity. I hope we continue our communication!
Thank you very much!

Good afternoon everyone! Recently started studying at Pentaschool! Very interesting and most importantly informative! Practical classes help to master and consolidate knowledge, webinars help to find what I didn’t know before. ) The teachers are wonderful, explain mistakes in detail, advise what to correct.) I chose a school for training for a long time, but I didn’t regret that I study here!) Lectures can be reviewed , if you don’t understand something, testing to consolidate knowledge!) Yes, and of course an online library where you can find books. I advise everyone!

Good school, everything is explained clearly. Here they are trying to give some basic things that other design schools do not have, and without which further success is impossible. The teachers are friendly and always available. Only positive impressions. It is absolutely clear that this topic – interior design – is boundless, difficult, you need to plow in order to at least do something more or less.

Good afternoon, 1. 5 months ago I received a diploma in landscape gardening and landscape design. And not just a diploma, but a red one.)))) It was the place of my whole life! After training, I immediately joined the battle! Why? Because @pentaschool has the most competent teachers. They know their business very well and have extensive experience in the landscape world. The study helped me improve all my skills from planning to implementing landscape projects. And now, I myself teach people landscape design. For the lazy, I’ll tell you right away. This is not the kind of study where you can learn something while lying on the couch. You’ll have to sweat, in the truest sense of the word.))) But it’s worth it. And now I’m doing what I love! Thanks to my teachers!

I would like to say a huge thank you to this educational platform and to all the teachers who conducted the training. All disciplines were clear and interesting, and most importantly useful. There was no “water”, only the most necessary information. Before training, I did not know how to use graphic editors at all, now, after training, I have advanced my knowledge and skills quite a lot. I definitely recommend studying here if there is no opportunity to study full-time in other educational institutions, but you want to get a new specialty.

Thank you for the base. In my opinion, of course, only theory is not enough to get started. Yes, there are practical tasks in the course, but as I wrote above, the time, with parallel loading, was not enough for the qualitative implementation of practical tasks. Therefore, I will develop practice in my own area.

Stet is dozing in the class at the singing lesson. He answers the teacher’s question about the size of a piece of music with a mocking song about a teacher who beats schoolchildren with a stick. The teacher furiously chases Stat around the classroom to the laughter of his classmates.

After class, one of the classmates mocks Stat’s mother: they say she was seen with a skinhead, but I thought she liked Mexicans. The boy sings the tune “Cucaracha”, Stat pounces on him, beats him, stuffs garbage from the bin he overturned into his mouth: don’t you dare mock my mother!

Stat returns home. Mother is sleeping. Nearby on the table are several unfinished bottles of strong alcohol. Stat reproaches his mother: you promised you wouldn’t do it again. He gives her pills. Are you going to work today? No. By the way, where do you work? In one restaurant. So you are a waitress? No, I’m a tamer of wild animals.

While mother is taking a bath, Stat pours vodka into the sink and prepares dinner. His mother asks him: the director of your school called me again. What did you do there again? Fight? absenteeism?

A bus pulls up to Stat’s school. On the board is the inscription: “National Boys’ Choir”. Choir conductor Mr. Carvell, teacher Mr. Drake, and choristers led by soloist Devon get off the bus. Carvell asks Devon to treat the performance here like a normal rehearsal. The choir will have to fight for the right to perform in New York at the Easter service with other illustrious bands, so an extra opportunity to practice will not hurt.

Principal Mrs. Steele walks into the classroom where Stat, who has been punished for disobedience, is sitting. She takes him to a choir performance in the gym. Mrs. Steel asks Stat to listen carefully to the speech. She admits that she invited the choir only for the sake of Stat: he has a wonderful voice, Mrs. Steele agreed with Carvell to audition.

After the choir’s performance, Carvell is ready to audition Stat. Drake is interested in what kind of vocal training the boy has, where did he study? Carvell says that he has little time, he does not want to be distracted by trifles. Let the guy sing. Stat silently turns and runs out of the room.

Stet goes home. Mrs. Steel tries to call Stat’s mother, but the answering machine goes off. Stat’s mother died in a road accident.

Mrs. Steel calls Mr. Owens from New York. She found this number on Stat’s file. The man says that he does not refuse the fact of paternity. He always helped Stat’s mother with money, but he did not see the boy himself for all 12 years of his life. The child was the fruit of a casual relationship of a married man. Mr. Owens has a family, children, there is no place for Stat in it. He’ll be better off in a foster home. Mrs Steele says the boy is musically gifted. So there is another option for Stat besides a foster family. There is one very good music school where Stat can show his talent. And no one will know about the fact of the secret paternity of Mr. Owens.

Owens is taking Stat to his new school. On the way, he talks on the phone with his wife. Stat memorizes the phone number his father dials.

Owens brings Stat to the academy, which trains performers for the National Youth Choir. The teaching staff, led by Carvell and the academy director, Justin, auditions Stat. After that, they tell Owens that the boy cannot be accepted into their school: the school year has already begun, he has no preparation. In addition, Carvell recalled how Stats escaped from an audition at his school. Owens says that the boy sings better than half of the students in the school, he writes a check: this is the full payment for the first year of study, plus some amount “for the development of the school.” Carvell pushes the check away from him, says that bribes won’t help Owens, and leaves the office where the conversation took place. Owens calmly says that money is everything. He shows the amount of the check to Justine, who immediately agrees to take Stat.

Owens approaches Stat, who is waiting for his fate in the hallway, and says: you have a table, a roof over your head, pocket money. And it’s time for me to go home.

Academy teacher Mr. Wooley takes Stat to his room, talks about the daily routine at their school.

It turns out that the academy choir is losing the competition for the right to perform in New York to other groups. Carvell says that his wards simply sing worse than their competitors. Justin offers to make an effort to fix the situation.

In the room where Stat was settled, his neighbor comes: his name is Rafael (Raffi) Abrams. My house is your house, you can take any notes here, and I’m in a hurry to take classes in polyphony. Rafael leaves, Stat turns up his stereo system at full volume. In the evening before going to bed, Raffi says that his stereo system is sacred. Stat shouldn’t even touch her.

In the cafeteria, a guy sits next to Stat and meets a newcomer. His name is Fernando.

In class, Mr. Wooley talks about the interval at which to start singing. Stat walks out of class, dials Mr. Owens’ number. Owens’ daughter picks up the phone. Stat is silent. The girl tells her father what numbers the caller’s number starts with. He shrugs: I don’t know, maybe it’s your secret admirer.

The boys are sitting in the recreation room. Andre asks Devon to treat him to chips. He refuses: buy it yourself. Stat goes to the vending machine, opens it. The choristers are helping themselves with snacks. Rafael tells Devon that there will be problems with the guy.

Mr. Drake is teaching. Stop, something is wrong here. He approaches Stat, gives him instructions and finds out that the boy is not familiar with musical notation. He goes to Justin, informs her of this circumstance. She offers Drake to train Stat. Drake says it’s none of his business. Justin reprimands him sharply, reports that she is tired of the ambitions of her subordinates, and kicks Drake out of his office.

Carvell teaches classes and performs a 16th century religious piece in the academy’s chapel. The soloists begin, then the second voices, baritones and basses enter. Carvell informs the students that the correctly executed work they are working on is a cross, a crucifix, a temple of God. And although he is not a believer, he believes that music is something divine. The task of the choristers is to give people this miracle.

After class, St sneaks into the chapel, plays a couple of notes, then mimics Carvell. He hears Stat: is that all you can do? Carvell leaves the chapel.

Raffi is happy: I was accepted into the tour troupe, we are going to Japan. The touring choir leaves, leaving the preparatory choir at the academy, with which Wooley works.

Stet asks Fernando to teach him how to read music. And what I get for this? Stat treats Fernando to pizza, and Fernando teaches him the art of reading musical notation.

Vuli teaches classes: we are working on diction. He makes the boys sing with heavy books on their heads, then lays them on their backs, now they have to sing with books on their stomachs. Wooley tells Stat that he sings with his throat. And he must sing in such a way that the sound comes from the depth of the diaphragm.

Wooley calls the hotel in Japan, asking to be connected to Carvell. He asks: are you completely crazy, calling me in the middle of the night? Wooley says I know who will lead us to New York. And who is it? Stat. He is progressing very quickly. And it’s all? Yes. Hang up the phone and let me sleep.

The choir is returning from Japan. Raffi brags to Stat: Devon and I were stars, we were greeted as rock musicians. Halls were full everywhere. Wish I could get back on tour soon.

Carvell sings the beginning of Mendelssohn’s song in class, does it twice. He asks the students: what has changed in my performance? Rafael says: you have changed the key. Stat adds: You missed one note. You are sure? Yes, the sixth note in the penultimate measure. Who else noticed that I missed a note? Nobody raises their hand. Carvell says he’s right. At least one person had a good time in class.

Wooley announces to the choristers: the bus leaves in five minutes, movies, girls and other nonsense are waiting for us in the mall. Wooley rushes Stat, who is walking to his room from the shower. Stat enters the room and discovers that Raphael has thrown his clothes out of the window onto the street. Raphael waves affably to his roommate as he boards the departing bus. Stat yells at him: I hate you!

The teaching staff of the academy is conferring about the fate of Stat. Wooley says the boy needs to be transferred to a touring choir. Drake vs. Wooley says the talented boy needs Carvell’s help. Justin and the teachers come to the gym for a PE class. The lesson is interrupted. Justin invites Stat to sing. He starts to sing. Carvell nods his head and leaves the gym. Justin says you learned so fast!

Wooley catches up to Carvell on the landing: I didn’t understand you. Carvell says one voice is not enough, he is not ready yet. Wooley claims that Stet will get ready for the Christmas holidays.

The choristers leave for the Christmas holidays. Drake hands Stat prep materials for a tour choir audition. Here is Britten’s Lullaby. Are they coming for you? Yes. Okay, school closes for the holidays.

St is secretly staying at the locked school. He takes the keys to the chapel, the kitchen, and the gym. During the holidays, he works hard, eating food found in the kitchen.

A new semester is starting. In class, Wooley hands out assignments for writing assignments for admission to the touring choir.

Carvell comes to the chapel. He says there are only two vacancies in the touring choir. Let’s start with Stat, then Fernando will speak. Stat sings Britten’s Lullaby. His voice breaks. Come on first. Carvell interrupts Stat, calls Fernando.

Stat breaks a window in the academy building with a rock. Then he disables Raphael’s stereo system, he is horrified that when he tries to turn on the unit, he starts to spark and smoke.

Carvell calls Stat to the chapel. He turns on the spotlights and asks the boy to sing. That one gets lost. Carvell reprimands him: you must sing not with your throat, but with your diaphragm, you must want to sing with all your heart, but music means nothing to you. No, I want to sing. You don’t respect me, you don’t respect the school – you ruined Rafael’s stereo system, smashed a window with a stone, broke a vending machine.

Frustrated, Stat comes to his room, finds a tour choir member’s dress uniform on his bed. He puts on his uniform, looks at himself in the mirror.

The choir goes on tour and performs successfully. Devon boards the bus on the way back to Stat. Welcome to the base. You performed great. Why so gloomy? Nothing, you’ll get used to it. I will be the first number, and you will be the second. We will conquer everyone.

Carvell plays the piano in an empty room. Fits Stat. Did you call me? I didn’t know you played the piano so well. Rachmaninoff was 20 years old when he wrote this music, a little older than you. I learned it at the age of 13. Then I played better. Andre is in trouble, so you take his place: third from the right in the front row.

Choir performing. Devon and Stat take turns soloing. The choir visits Washington.

Owens’ wife Sally tells her husband that they have been sent four tickets to the National Youth Choir. The concert will take place on the territory of Yale University, where they have not been since graduation. Owens says young people don’t like the classics. But his daughters object.

Carvell is informed that Devon is ill and will not be able to perform. Carvell suggests canceling the concert. But Wooley claims that Stat could very well replace Devon. Stat is assigned to sing the Queen Anne aria in Handel’s work. Stat panics, he tells Carvell that he can’t do this tricky thing, that he hates Handel. Carvell consoles him: Handel also hated singers. The concert begins. Carvell tells Stat to watch the conductor’s eyes, and sits down in the auditorium himself.

Starting to play his part, Stat opens the sheet music folder and finds that it is empty. Devon peeks out from behind the scenes. He stole the notes. In the hall sits Owens with his family. Carvell tells Drake he has an empty folder. His facial expressions remind Stat to pay attention to the eyes of the conductor. Stat plays the part brilliantly.

Drake approaches Devon on the stairs, demands that he return the sheet music. If you cheat again, do it smarter.

The choristers congratulate Stat on his success. They see Devon sneaking up the stairs, rush after him, overtake him, demand that Stat “slap” his rival in the face. But Stat says that he will not do this, because for this he will be expelled from school.

Justin is informed that her choir has been selected to perform Handel’s “Messiah” for the New York Easter service. Teachers discuss how they will cope with this task. Carvell says that he will add a treble part, since Handel did not provide for a solo part in this work. But who can take the highest “re”? Only Stat and Devon can do it. Justin reports: Stet is being transferred to another school in Switzerland.

Owens came for Stat: it’s a nine-hour flight to Switzerland, so Stat can get a good night’s sleep. Owens is stopped by Carvell, who says that Stat is not going anywhere. And if Owens leaves Stat at the academy, then no one will know about his secret paternity. So you sent us the tickets? Yes, we send tickets to the families of all choristers. But parents, as a rule, are interested in the success of their children.

Wooley hands out notes to the choristers: a challenge you’ve never faced before. What is this? Carvel says: your nightmare. And now “re” of the third octave! The boys squeak with all their might. Carvell says: whoever strikes this note will be the soloist in New York.

Devon managed to steal Stat’s file from the academy secretary. They review it with Raffi. Look, what is there just not here: absenteeism, fights. Looks like the apple hasn’t fallen far from the tree. The file reveals a photo in which Stat’s mother was taken while being detained by the police.

Devon reproduces this photo and hangs it up in the dining room with the caption: “This is Stat’s mother. ” Stat lashes out at Devon and beats him up. Carvell tells Stat that he can pack his things: he will be expelled from the academy.

The next day, Stat’s case is heard by the school’s disciplinary committee, chaired by Justine. In his last word, Stat says that he repents of his deed, asks him to forgive and leave him at the academy. He is asked to leave, Justin puts the issue to a vote. Carvell votes for exclusion. But he demands that Devon also be expelled from the academy, since it was he who, with his cruel act, provoked Stat into a fight. Part of the blame Carwell takes on himself: out of personal ambition, I encouraged their rivalry. Therefore, Carvell made the decision to retire immediately. Justin says that the departure of two soloists and a choir conductor at once jeopardizes the performance of the team in New York. She demands from Carvell that the choir perform as if angels had descended from heaven. You must make the audience weep and the stained-glass windows of the cathedral shake. Go work on making my wishes come true.

Before a show in New York, Mrs. Steele, visiting from Texas, approaches Stat: your life is getting better, keep moving forward.

Owens and his family come to see the choir.

The choir performs “Hallelujah”, the soloist is Stat. The audience gives a standing ovation.

The night after the concert, Owens can’t sleep. Sally asks him what’s wrong with you? Her husband tells her that he has to confess something.

Stet is in an empty chapel trying to hit a high note. The voice breaks. Devon appears: your voice breaks. Congratulations, you are growing up.

The choristers are leaving for the summer holidays. Stat leaves the academy, not wanting to stay there as a regular viola. Vuliego asks: will they come for you? No, I’ll take the train myself, first to the summer camp, then to the boarding school abroad. Stet approaches Carvel to say goodbye. He wrote him a letter of recommendation, in which he called his best student.
